Maybe God wants us to meet a few wrong people before meeting the right one so that when we finally meet the right person, we will know to be grateful for that gift.

The best kind of friend is the kind you can sit on a bench and sing with, never say a word, and then walk away feeling like it was the best conversation you’ve ever had. Don’t go for looks; they can cheat us. Don’t go for wealth; even that fades away. Go for someone who makes you smile because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright. Find the one that makes your heart smile.

When the door of happiness closes, another opens, but often times we look so long at the closed door that we don’t see the one that has been opened for us. It’s true that we don’t know what we’ve got until we lose it, but it’s also true that we don’t know what we’ve been missing until it arrives. The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past. You can’t get on well in life until you let go of past failures and heartaches.

Always put yourself in another’s shoes. If you feel that it hurts you ,it probably hurts the other person, too.

When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you’re the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

29. The underlined phrase“ that gift”in the first paragraph refers to    .

A. God

B. a birthday gift

C. the wrong people

D. the right person

30. According to the text, the best friend is the one who can    .

A. share his / her success with you

B. help you improve your grades

C. give money to you when you are in need

D. accompany you and make you smile

31. What’s the main idea of the third paragraph?

A. Think about the past success.

B. Look at the closed door often.

C. Forget the past failures and heartaches.

D. Try our best to remember the lost things.

Towards evening, Jennifer was walking on the beach with a gentle breeze blowing through her hair. Looking up at the golden red sun ball, she was surprised by its color, deep red in the middle, softly fading into yellow. She could hear nothing but the waves and the seagulls flying up above in the sky.

The atmosphere relaxed her. This was what she needed. “It’s getting late,” she thought, “I must go home. My parents will be wondering where I am.” She wondered how her parents would react when she got home after the three days she was missing. She kept on walking, directing herself to bungalow(平房)163, where she spent every summer holiday. The road was deserted. She walked slowly and silently. Just in a few hundred meters, she would have been safe in her house.

It was really getting dark now. She wished she had her favorite coat on. It might keep her really warm. She imagined having it with her. This thought dissipated(消散) when she finally saw her front door. It seemed different. Nobody had taken care of the outside garden for a few days. She was shocked: her father was usually so strict about keeping everything clean and tidy, and now…

She entered the house. First, she went into the kitchen and saw a note written by her father,

“Dear Ellen, there’s some coffee ready; I went looking.” But where was Ellen? On the right side of the hallway was her parents’ room. She went in and saw her. Her mother, lying on the bed, was sleeping. Her face looked so tired, as if she hadn’t slept for days. She was really pale. Jennifer would have wanted to wake her up, but she looked too tired. So Jennifer just fell asleep beside her. When Jennifer woke up something was different. She wasn’t in her mother’s room and she wasn’t wearing the old clothes she ran away in. She was in her cozy bed in her pajamas(睡衣).

It felt so good being back home. Suddenly she heard a voice. “Are you feeling better now, dear? You know you got us very, very scared.”

28. The author mentions the views of the beach in Para. 1 in order to __________.

A. tell us the time of the story             B. show Jennifer’s eased mind

C. show Jennifer’s loneliness               D. indicate the beauty of nature

29. Jennifer decided to go home because __________.

A. it was getting cold

B. she realized her parents were worried

C. she began to miss her parents

D. she knew nobody would take care of the garden

30. What can we infer from the passage?

A. Jennifer went home to fetch her favorite coat.

B. Jennifer’s father was so worried that he couldn’t take care of the outside garden.

C. Jennifer understood why the outside garden was left uncared for.

D. Jennifer’s father used to be too strict with her.

31. Which of the following shows the change of Jennifer’s feeling?

A. Relaxed→Lonely→Tired→Upset.

B. Angry→Relaxed→Fearful→Comfortable.

C. Fearful→Relaxed→Cheerful→Lonely.

D. Relaxed→Anxious→Shocked→Comfortable.

One of the most successful singers of the twentieth century, Ella Fitzgerald has made several different styles her own. She was born in Virginia but was brought up in an orphanage in Yonkers, New York. Chick Webb spotted her in an amateur competition when she was sixteen. He engaged her to sing with his band and when he died in 1939, she took over.

Unlike Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald taught herself the sentimental music so popular in the 1930’s------ songs like “My Heart Belongs to Daddy”----- and her recordings became best-sellers. During the 1940’s she developed her own “scat singing” ---- a breathless, nonsense---syllable style---- for songs like “Flying Home” and “Lady Be Good.”

Ella Fitzgerald was the perfect musical partner for her friend, the trumpeter Louis Armstrong, matching him in warmth and artistry. “I just like music, period,” she said. “To me, it’s a story. There’s only one thing better than singing…. It’s more singing.”

21. What does the passage mainly discuss?

   A. A comparison of Ella Fitzgerald and Bessie Smith.

   B. The musical career of Ella Fitzgerald.

   C. Ella Fitzgerald’s early childhood.

   D. Ella Fitzgerald’s most recent recordings.

22.The underlined word “spotted” means______.

   A. noticed   B. brought up   C. employed  D. recognized

23.What does the passage imply about Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong?

   A. They were the founders of “scat singing”.

   B. They played the same musical instruments.

   C. They performed well together.

   D. They were a married couple.

Dear Paul,

I am glad to hear from you . I have learned that ______________________________________

California is dry. The sunny state is suffering from a four-year drought — a serious and unusual lack of rainfall. The effects of the drought can be seen most clearly in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains. Much of the state’s water supply comes from the deep snow that falls in these mountains. That snow melts in the spring and fills the state’s rivers, lakes, and underground bodies of water.    36   .As a result, experts are now warning that California currently has only a one-year supply of usable water. Today we are standing on dry grass where there should be five feet of snow.

37   .That means people will have to limit their water use at home. They can do this by not watering lawns and reducing how much water they use for cleaning and cooking.    38.    Places like golf courses currently use a lot of water to keep lawns green. They’ll need to find solutions for this problem that require less water.

California’s water crisis has been caused mainly by a lack of rain and snowfall over the past few years.    39   . Today, California is home to nearly 40 million people. This is double the number who lived there in 1960.

California simply has too many people for its natural resources.    40   . Many people have moved to the state because of its natural beauty and pleasant weather. And several major businesses are based in California, including Hollywood movie companies such as Warner Bros. and technology giants like Apple.

The drought is not likely to destroy California’s businesses, but the state will have to rethink how it grows and does things.

A. People can benefit a lot from this terrible drought.

B. This serious drought needs immediate action.

C. Nature has prepared so much for people.

D. Mother Nature didn’t intend for so many people.

E. But the snow hasn’t been falling.

F. But another big problem is its growing population.

G. Some public places will need to make big changes.

In Asia, there are many places for people to go to teach English. Most of the teachers are young and sociable, and there are a lot of parties there. Korea is usually the place most people go to, because they have the most benefits and highest salaries by working only twenty hours a week.   65    Only if you stay there for a long time will you save some money.

China is a new rising star and lots of people are going there.   66    You can save a sizable amount and complete all your loans back home. Besides, Chinese people are enterprising and you can learn a lot from them. In China, Taiwan is a good place to go, especially for females who want to earn much, but there are not many adult classes offered.

The Middle East offers very high salaries for teachers, all of which is tax free.   67   Most of the people who tend to teach there are older and more conservative, so they dont expect a party scene.

Italy and Spain are two beautiful countries where you can try your fortune.   68   Tourism is another industry in these countries, where English knowledge is useful. Moreover, by teaching in Europe you have the chance to travel every weekend to a new country and visit a new culture besides a good salary.   69

A. Europe has a lot to offer.

B. It is a great way for people to see a new place.

C. Teaching English overseas is a really rewarding experience.

D. Like Japan, the pay is quite good, but the cost of living is much cheaper.

E. Japan is also a good choice, but the cost of living eats up a lot of your money.

F. However, you must be a certified teacher with years of experience if you want to teach there.

G. Fashion industry in Milan would love to hire well-known English-speaking people to work with international models and designers.

A.     One reason tea became more popular than coffee lies in the nature of its preparation.

B.      Likewise, in many grand hotels, tea is a more popular indulgence than a three-course dinner.

C.     A “mania for thinness” sent it into decline after the Second World War, says Helen Simpson, author of a book on the subject.

D.     The cheapest way to observe the tradition, of course, is at home.

E.      All cakes and Pastries are perfect in size and include some very unique flavours!

AB. These days afternoon tea offers tradition with a modern twist.

When tea leaves were first imported to Britain in the 17th century, only a few could afford them. By the 18th century it had become the democratic drink of the everyman; but afternoon tea as a distinct ceremony, complete with pastries, was a Victorian invention.

78   . The gradual infiltration of American coffee culture also played a part, as did the rise of women in the workforce (less than for sipping), the widening range of social haunts and the ebbing of formality (the Ritz still bans jeans and “sports shoes”).

79   . Caffeine-free black tea and onion bread are recent additions to the menu. A century ago the Ritz was one of the few places an unmarried young woman could meet a man without a chaperone, says Ms. Simpson; women still dominate the tea guests, but most now leave their menfolk behind. And the quintessentially British experience is typically served by tall-coated waiters from continental Europe.

Such luxury at a time of economic depression may be surprising. But tea seems to be an austerity-era way to splash out. At 42 ($67) a head, tea at the Ritz is a small part compared with lunch, let alone a room.      80    “Tea is a celebratory meal but it’s often cheaper and doesn’t take as long”, says Christina Norton.

And the afternoon tea fashion is trickling down. For less grand hotels, it is a neat way to fill a formerly dead zone in mid-afternoon.      81     . The Great British Bake Off, a television programme devoted to cupcakes and crumpets, recently ended a second series. Sales of cookie cutters, cake stands and “vintage-style cake tins” have shot up, according to a department store. A pottery firm says tea, “the big thing of the moment”, has received demand for its wares. Times may be tough, but Britons are still eating cake.

Laughter makes you feel good. And the good feeling that you get when you laugh remains with you even after the laughter disappears. Humor helps you keep a positive, optimistic outlook through difficult situations, disappointments, and loss.

More than just a pause from sadness and pain, laughter gives you the courage and strength to find new sources of meaning and hope. Even in the most difficult of times, a laugh –-- or even simply a smile–can go a long way toward making you feel better. And laughter really is contagious (有传染的)—just hearing laughter primes your brain and readies you to smile and join in the fun.

Laughter strengthens our relationships by bringing positive feelings and building emotional connections. When we laugh with one another, a positive bond is created. This bond fights stress, disagreements, and disappointment.

Shared laughter is one of the most effective tools for keeping relationships fresh and exciting. All emotional sharing builds strong and lasting relationship bonds. Laughter unites people during difficult times.

Having more humor and play into your daily interactions can improve the quality of your love relationships— as well as your connections with co-workers, family members, and friends.

Laughter is your birthright, a natural part of life that is inborn. Little babies begin smiling during the first weeks of life and laugh out loud within months of being born. Even if you did not grow up in a family where laughter was a common sound, you can learn to laugh at any stage of life.

One essential characteristic that helps us laugh is not taking ourselves too seriously. We’ve all known someone who takes everything with deathly seriousness and never laughs at anything. No fun there!

The ability to laugh, play, and have fun with others not only makes life more enjoyable but also helps you solve problems, connect with others, and be more creative. People who include humor and play into their daily lives find that it renews them and all of their relationships.

Life brings challenges that can either get the best of you or become playthings for your imagination. When you “become the problem” and take yourself too seriously, it can be hard to think outside the box and find new solutions. But when you play with the problem, you can often transform it into an opportunity for creative learning.

A punctual person is in the habit of doing a thing at the proper time and is never late in keeping an appointment. The unpunctual man, on the other hand, never does what he has to do at the right time. __36__

There's a proverb which says, “Time flies never to be recalled.” This is true. __37__ The unpunctual man is for ever wasting his most valuable asset (财产) as well as others'. The unpunctual person is always complaining that he finds no time to answer letters, or return calls or keep appointments. __38__ He knows that he can get through his huge amount of work only if he faithfully keeps every appointment and deals with every piece of work when it has to be attended to.
