Bars are very important in providing a place where people can meet and make friends. People who enjoy a drink in a local bar are happier and have more friends. They are more likely to be engaged in conversations in small community pubs, and social skills improve after a drink.

Professor Robin Dunbar of Oxford University said, “Friendship and communities are probably the two most important factors influencing our health and well-being. Making and maintaining friendships is something that has to be done in the real world. The digital world is simply no substitute(n.替代物). Given the increasing tendency for our social life to be on the Internet rather than in real life, having relaxed, accessible places where people can meet old friends and make new ones becomes even more necessary.”

Tim Page, chief executive of CAMRA, said, “Bars offer a social environment to enjoy a drink with friends in a responsible community setting. The role of community bars in ensuring well-being cannot be overstated. For that reason, we all  need to do what we can to ensure that everyone has a ‘local' near to where they live or work.”

Bars have long been part of British society and have played a key role in British social life since the 16th century. Bars came to represent the heart and soul of a community, providing both a place of entertainment and an engine for community bonding. In a world before the arrival of the motor car, the bar provided a venue in which people could get friendships and a sense of community.

But the closing decades of the 20th century witnessed major changes in both the style of bars (for example, themed bars) and their numbers. As of 2015, the number of bars declines sharply, with bars continuing to close at an average rate of 29 a week.

  1. (1) What does a regular(n.常客) at a local bar having more friends prove?

A . The benefits brought by pub cultures B . The popularity of local bars in Britain. C . The relation between friendships and bars D . The importance of face-to-face communication.
  2. (2) What does Robin think is the tendency for social life?

A . More people will go to bars. B . People will maintain friendships C . People will trust the digital world D . People will communicate more online.
  3. (3) Why does Tim Page value the role of local bars?

A . They contribute to people's social happiness. B . They are a place common people can afford. C . They are a good place to spread cultural values. D . They are accessible to people in the community.
  4. (4) What can we infer about bars nowadays?

A . Themed bars have held the market B . Some bars have a hard time surviving. C . They become the heart of a community D . Measures should be taken to save them.
Most students think it to join the English corner, though a few haven't realized the of it. (significance)

However, I did not listen to my teachers careful in class and paid little attention at my homework. As result, I failed two of my most favorite subjects, math and physics, which surprised everyone. Look back, I realized that it was my overconfidence which led to my failure. Only if we are modest but work hard will we have the chance to achieve our goals.

Dear Jim,

I'd like to tell you something more about our school sports meet. It was holding on Oct. 6th, it was a fine day. There were over 1,000 students and teachers attended it. Wang Lin, a student from my class won the 100-meters race. He finished the race in 12.6 seconds and broke the school record. The sports meet was really success. That was because we were all trying to do my best. Although I was not one of the winner, I was proud of that we had done.

Looking forward to receive your letter.

The holiday season isn't just about shopping and gifts. However, holiday travel can be more expensive than the gifts. Fortunately, the following tips will help keep your travel spending under control.

● Plan ahead. The earlier you book your travel, from airfare to hotels, the easier it is to find good deals. Your best prices on airfare come when you book three weeks before the plane leaves for domestic flights. For international flights, consider booking 30 days in advance. Many experts point out that you should book travel between  one month and three months out for high-traffic holidays.

● Book your air travel on cheaper days. Traveling by air on Tuesdays and Wednesdays often costs less than traveling on Fridays and Sundays. During the holidays, it is not just about a specific day of the week. You also need to consider the days surrounding the holiday but days immediately before and after a holiday can be expensive. One of the best ways to save is to plan your air travel on the Day of the holiday.

● Consider traveling overnight. Red-eye flights and overnight flights often cost less than those at more convenient times. Traveling overnight can help you avoid a night in the hotel, as well as save your money on travel to your destination.

You can't bring liquids with you on the airline, but you can bring sandwiches and other snacks. When you are on the road, you can buy food at local groceries to make your own meals. If you are staying in a hotel long-term, consider cooking your own food, especially if you have access to a microwave.

A. Bring your own food.

B. Consider affordable accommodations.

C. Traveling by plane is not the best choice.

D. Plus, booking earlier can save you money.

E. For instance, traveling on Christmas Day might be a great deal.

F. A great deal of travel also takes place during this time of year.

G. Other alternatives include sleeper trains, as well as overnight ferries.

Dear Editor,

I am writing tell you about the discussion we've had about whether it is necessary of middle school students to have mobile phones. Most students think this is more convenient for them to keep in the touch with their parents and classmates. And what's much, it's a fashion. However, most teachers think middle school students are not old enough to control them. It is a waste of time for students to play games and sending messages on their mobile phones. Therefore, it is easy to make students contact with each other. In my opinion, following the fashion was understandable. But as middle school student, we should put all our energy into our study.

Yours truly,

Mary
