One day, Nick invited his friends to supper. He was cooking some delicious food in the kitchen. Suddenly, he 61 (find) that he had run out of salt. So Nick called to his son, “Go to the village and buy some salt, but pay a fair price for it; neither too much 62 too little.”
His son looked surprised. “I can understand why I shouldn’t pay too much, Father, but if I can pay less, 63 not save a bit of money?”
“That would be a very 64 (reason) thing to do in a big city, but it could destroy a small village like ours.”Nick said.
Nick’s guests, 65 had heard their conversation, asked why they should not buy sale more cheaply if they could. Nick replied, “The only reason a man would sell salt 66 a lower price would be because he was desperate for money. And anyone who took advantage of that situation would be showing a lack of respect 67 the sweat and struggle of the man
who worked very hard to produce it.”
“But such a small thing couldn’t 68 (possible) destroy a village.”
“In the beginning, there was only 69 very small amount of unfairness in the world, but everyone added a little, always 70 (think) that it was only small and not very important, and look where we have ended up today.”
Questions you should ask yourself when you fail
The more new things we try the more failure we are likely to have. 36 . Experiencing failure can be a learning experience and an opportunity for a fresh start. A good way to begin this process is by asking yourself some tough questions.
1. What can I learn from this?
Take responsibility for what went wrong. OK, so it was not all your fault—but some of it was. Successful people don’t make excuses or blame others. 37 So you should look at the experience objectively(客观地).
2. Do I need to acquire or improve some skills?
Did the problem reveal some lack of skill on your part? How could you learn or improve those skills? Perhaps there are books or courses or people you could turn to. 38 __
3. Who can I learn from?
Is there someone to whom you can turn for advice? Did a boss, colleague or friend see what happened? 39 . Most people do not ask for help because they believe it to be a sign of weakness rather than strength. It’s not. It shows that you are ready to learn and change.
4. What will I do next?
Now draw up an action plan. Will you try something similar or something different? Revisit your goals. Failure doesn’t mean you have to give up; maybe you just need to change it in another way. 40___
A. You can now reset your sights on your destination and plan a new course.
B. Make them step stones to future success.
C. They take responsibility for the failure.
D. In fact the only way to avoid failure is to do nothing new.
E. The important thing is how we deal with failure.
F. Make a self-development plan to acquire the skills and experience you need.
G. If they are constructive and supportive then ask them for some feedback (反馈) and guidance.
All young people dream of traveling the world. They are restless and very eager to see new sights. However, they have little idea how they would really do it if given the chance. Because their knowledge of geography is quite limited, they seldom know much about the places they wish to visit or how they would get there.
Already hundreds of thousands of Chinese student tourists are visiting these places-Wuyi, Lhasa, Lijiang, Dali, Vientiane and Phnom Penh. Indeed, these students will soon be the most traveled generation in China’s long history. The World Tourist Organization predicts that a quarter of a century from now the number of Chinese tourists going abroad will be twenty times what it is today. The largest percentage of these tourists will visit Southeast Asia. Not all Chinese who travel abroad will be tourists, however. More and more youths are deciding to volunteer their skills in this region; much like their peers in the Peace Corps of America.
Critical thinking skills required include planning for a trip and solving problems after the trip has begun. The focus is on how to read an atlas to make travel plans and how to find ways of traveling. An atlas offers a wealth of information about geography and is one way to increase students’ awareness (意识) of their global environment. Use of an atlas especially meets the needs of students with different visual and spatial (空间的) learning styles.

I wandered into the small store where I usually buy milk, when the store owner received a call from a customer. The customer and his wife had shopped there several months earlier. He noticed that his wife really liked one thing in the store, so he wanted to buy it as a surprise.
But the customer was in Tennessee, far away from the store which was in Maine. What was more, he had been to the store several months earlier, and it was difficult to believe that the store owner would remember him, or what he was looking for.
The store owner took a few close-up photos with her camera, and e-mailed them to the customer on the computer. The customer looked at the photos, and decided which one he wanted. They talked and discussed a price over the phone. She took care of the credit card transaction (交易) online, and promised the gift would be shipped out that afternoon.
The store owner was really smart. She was willing to push herself to find new ways to make the transaction actually happen. And it did work. However, it was the first time she had ever done it.
I was amazed that the store owner discovered a creative solution that could lead to a new way of doing business. I was impressed by what she did---so easily, but how difficult it is for many of us to make that leap(飞跃). I’m not just talking about technology, but about learning how to adapt to change. Most people hate or fear change unless they get to know exactly what change needs to be made. However, we should realize that challenge and opportunity go hand in hand.

My grandma whom we all called Nanny was a solid, firstgeneration,Italian immigrant. She came to this country with her family on a tiny ship during World War Ⅰ when she was only 8 years old. During the trip she survived stormy seas, little food, and an attack by a German Uboat. After getting here, her large family worked hard to build a new life in America. They never had much money but were rich in love.
One day, when I was about 5 or 6 years old,my parents and brothers went on a trip. It was just me and Nanny in the house for the weekend. Nanny seemed so happy to be taking care of me all by herself. She made me a special breakfast that first morning. However, all I could do was complaining about how the food was not how Mom always made it. Nanny quietly put down the plate and went into the living room. I followed a minute later and saw that she had tears in her eyes. It was the first time I had ever seen my strong and proud grandmother crying and I was the one who had caused it.
I walked over to Nanny, climbed on her lap,and for the first time in my short life I did something else too. I apologized without being told to and asked Nanny to forgive me. She smiled, rubbed my head, and told me I was a good boy even though I didn't feel like one then.
That memory just like my Nanny's love will stay in my heart forever. It is a sign of both strength and wisdom. Asking for forgiveness helps us to learn,to grow, and to love.

A.forgiveness can be beneficial to people asking for it
B.hardships can make children more indifferent
C.grandparents are more tolerant than their grandchildren
D.family ties can sometimes be misused
It was unusually quiet in the emergency room on December 25.
I was the nurse on duty that day. I didn’t think there would be any patients, sighing about having to work on Christmas. Just then five bodies showed up at my desk, a pale woman and four small children.
“Are you all sick?” I asked.
“Yes,” she said weakly and lowered her head.
But when it came to descriptions of their problems, things got a little unclear. Two of the children had headaches, but the headaches weren’t accompanied by the normal body language of holding the head or trying to keep it still. Two children had earaches, but only one could tell me which ear was affected. The mother complained of a cough but seemed to work to produce it.
Something was wrong, but I didn’t say anything but explained that it might be a little while before a doctor saw her. She responded, “Take your time; it’s warm here.”
Then I checked the chart after the admitting clerk had finished registering the family. No address—they were homeless. The waiting room was warm.
I looked out at the family gathering close together by the Christmas tree. The little one was pointing at the television and saying something to her mother. The oldest one was looking at something on the Christmas tree.
I went back to the nurses’ station and mentioned we had a homeless family in the waiting room. The nurses, complaining about working on Christmas, began to feel pity for a family just trying to get warm on Christmas. The team went into action, much as we do when there’s a medical emergency. But this one was a Christmas emergency.
We were all offered a free meal in the hospital cafeteria on Christmas Day, so we claimed that meal and prepared a banquet for our Christmas guests. We needed presents. We put together oranges and apples in a basket. We collected from different departments candies, crayons and other things available that could be presents. As seriously as we met the physical needs of the patients that came to us that day, our team worked to meet the needs of a family who just wanted to be warm on Christmas Day.
Later, as the family walked to the door to leave, the four-year old came running back, gave me a hug and whispered, “Thanks for being our angels today.”

Headaches are one of man’s most common enemies. Most people get headaches from time to time. What causes headaches and what can we do about them?
Probably more than 90% of all headaches are caused by worry or tension. Modern living produces tension for everybody – at work, at school and at home. What can we do about tension and worry in our lives? First, find what is causing the tension. It may be caused by emotions. Do you worry too much over what people think of you, over your clothes, or about what you did or didn’t say? Are you on good terms with your employer, neighbor, best friend, school friend or family? If not, why not? Next, find a way of reducing tensions. Gardening, walking, running, swimming or any activity suitable for your age will help reduce tension. Then look at your way of life. Ask yourself, where am I going? And why? Learn the secret of relaxation. Lie down in a dark quiet room and relax as much as possible by taking several slow breaths. Let all your muscles relax.
Habits of daily living also produce headaches. These include lack of exercise, especially sitting for hours watching TV or studying, lack of fresh air, lack of sleep and eating too much. Get in the habit of balanced living: plenty of sleep, regular exercise, regular meals, good food, fresh air and avoiding harmful things such as heavy smoking, alcohol and strong coffee. A headache can be the body’s reaction against these things.
There are other causes of headaches. Headaches may be caused by infections or low blood sugar. If your headache gets worse, see your doctor.

Occasional self-medication has always been part of normal living. The making and selling of drugs have a long history and are closely linked, like medical practice itself, with the belief in magic. Only during the last hundred years or so has the development of scientific techniques made it possible for some of the causes of symptoms to be understood, so that more accurate diagnosis has become possible. The doctor is now able to follow up the correct diagnosis(诊断)of many illnesses with specific treatment of their causes. In many other illnesses, of which the causes remain unknown, it is still limited, like the unqualified prescriber (出具处方者), to the treatment of symptoms. The doctor is trained to decide when to treat symptoms only and when to attack the cause: this is the essential difference between medical prescribing and self-medication.
The advance of technology has brought about much progress in some fields of medicine, including the development of scientific drug therapy (治疗法). In many countries public health organization is improving and people's nutritional standards have risen. Parallel with such beneficial trends have two harmful effects. One is the use of high-pressure advertising by the pharmaceutical(制药)industry, which has tended to influence both patients and doctors and has led to the overuse of drugs generally. The other is the emergence of the sedentary (需要久坐的) society with its faulty ways of life: lack of exercise, over-eating, unsuitable eating, not enough sleep, too much smoking and drinking. People with disorders arising from faulty habits such as these, as well as from unhappy human relationships, often resort to self-medication and so add the taking of pharmaceuticals to the list. Advertisers go to great lengths to catch this market.
Clever advertising, aimed at chronic (慢性的) sufferers who will try anything because doctors have not been able to cure them, can induce such faith in a preparation, particularly if steeply priced, that it will produce—by suggestion—a very real effect in some people. Advertisements are also aimed at people suffering from mild complaints such as simple colds and coughs, which clear up by themselves within a short time.
These are the main reasons why laxatives, indigestion remedies, painkillers, tonics, vitamin and iron tablets and many other preparations are found in quantity in many households. It is doubtful whether taking these things ever improves a person's health; it may even make it worse. Worse because the preparation may contain unsuitable ingredients; worse because the taker may become dependent on them; worse because they might be taken in excess; worse because they may cause poisoning, and worse of all because symptoms of some serious underlying cause may be masked and therefore medical help may not be sought.

At one time, computers were expected largely to remove the need for paper copies of documents(文件) because they could be stored electronically. But for all the texts that are written, stored and sent electronically, a lot of them are still ending up on paper.
It is difficult to measure the quantity of paper used as a result of use of Internet-connected computers, although just about anyone who works in an office can tell you that when e-mail is introduced, the printers start working overtime. “I feel in my bones this revolution is causing more trees to be cut down ,” says Ted Smith of the Earth Village Organization.
Perhaps the best sign of how computer and Internet use pushes up demand for paper comes from the high-tech industry itself, which sees printing as one of its most promising new markets. Several Internet companies have been set up to help small businesses print quality documents from a computer. Earlier this week Hewlett-Packard Co. announced a plan to develop new technologies that will enable people to print even more so they can get a hard copy of a business document, a medical record or just a one-line e-mail, even if they are nowhere near a computer. As the company sees it , the more use of the Internet the greater demand for printers .
Does all this mean environmental concerns (环境问题) have been forgotten? Some activists suggest people have been led to believe that a lot of dangers to the environment have gone away.
“I guess people believe that the problem is taken care of, because of recycling(回收利用),” said Kelly Quirke, director of the Rainforest Action Network in San Francisco. Yet Quirke is hopeful that high-tech may also prove helpful. He says printers that print on both sides are growing in popularity.
The action group has also found acceptable paper made from materials other than wood, such as agricultural waste.

A.the rapid development of small businesses
B.the opening up of new markets

It is know to all that we students of today have to fix our attentions on our lessons, so we know little of society. A holiday was the best time and the best chance to make up for that. Take a part-time job is a good form of social practice. What we have learned in books or in class can't have an important effect us. In social practice, we can surely make a progress in both knowledge and practical ability. Beside, when we take a part-time job, we may got paid more or less to help our family. Thus, I will say senior school students should take part-time jobs in their holidays, if possibly.
