If you've ever wondered how dancers would tell the story of a man and a woman's love for each other through dance moves, you should watch people dance the Rumba.  36  And it is considered the most passionate (富有激情的) ballroom dance.

Like many Latin dances, the Rumba has its roots (根源) in Africa. When the Spanish first moved to the New World, they brought African slaves to work for them.   37  When they were finished with a hard day's work, they would sometimes find the person they were in love with and dance the Rumba.   38  They wanted to dance the Rumba in public!

The dance slowly spread and grew in popularity. Then, in the 1930s, the famous dance teacher Monsieur Pierre saw the Rumba being danced in New York and he decided it was so exciting and interesting it should be danced in London, too.  39

Today there are several types of Rumba people dance. Some dance a type of Rumba that is very fast and features (……为特点) big movements.   40 No matter what type of Rumba people dance, the story the dance tells is still the same: the love between a man and a woman.

B. This popular dance is from the island nation of Cuba

C. Others dance a slow type of Rumba and use small steps

D. When slave masters saw this dance, they were impressed

The man looked at the weak mule and the farmer 64 just stood there repeating, “Yep, old Warwick can do the job.” The man thought he had nothing to lose. Therefore, 65 took the old man and Warwick to the ditch.111]

The farmer hitched(套住) the mule to the car and 66   (shout), “Pull, Fred! Pull, Jack! Pull, Ted! Pull, Warwick!” And the mule pulled the car from the ditch 67 very little effort.

The man was 68 (amaze). He thanked the farmer and asked, “Why did you call out all of those other names 69 you called Warwick?” The farmer smiled and said, “Old Warwick is just about blind. Once he believes he’s part of a team, he won’t mind 70 (pull).”

The Sport I like Best

Of all the sports, I like table-tennis best. I think it is not only a sport but also  1   art, because it is a game  2    needs strength and skill. Some people think that    3  playtable-tennis needs little strength,  4   I dont think so. In playing table-tennis, we should judge the direction of the ball, and hit it back with great strength so that we can win the game. At the same time we need to pick   5   the ball which     6  fallto the ground. So after one game you will be very     7  tire if you have tried your best. But, as a sport, I think it more like an art. In the game, you can often find the ball moving   8     quickquick, and each of the playersmovements  9     (be) very beautiful. So I like the sport very much.  Though I cant play it very well, I still show great interest in it. I think playing table-tennis can build our bodies, keep us    10   (health) and train our brains. So I like it very much.

_______they won the game was ________we had expected

How would you like an easy way to earn $2,500? All you have to do is to sit around and wait for your meals. There’s a catch, however. You have to stay in a chicken cage with a stranger for a whole week. There are no books or television or radio for a whole week. There are no books or television or radio for amusement. You can’t leave until the week is up. And a camera will be recording your every move.

Two people actually took the job. The idea came from Rob Thompson, a video artist. He wanted to make a film about the way animals are treated. His goal was to raise people’s awareness (认识) of the living conditions of animals that are raised for food. He decided to pay $5,000 out of his own savings to two people who were willing to live like chickens for a week.

To Rob’s surprise, quite a few people answered his advertisement. He had interviews and selected Eric, a 24-year-old restaurant worker, and Pam, a 27-year-old chemist. The plan was for them to spend seven days together in a chicken cage that was six feet long and three feet wide. A camera would record their experience, which would take place in an art museum.

The week was long and difficult. They slept on a hard wooden floor. They couldn’t stand up without banging their heads. They ate mash(a kind of food for animals) and drink water from a garden pipe. Their only privacy (隐私) was a toilet surrounded by a curtain. There were no sinks, mirrors, or toothbrushes in the cage. Visitors who came here were warned, “Do not feed the humans.”

Finally it was over, and Pam and Eric came out of the cage. They had survived the week, and they each had a $2,500 check in their hands. When Rob Thompson opened the cage, Eric came out, changed into clean clothes, and ate a chocolate bar right away. “It’s great for me to be able to stand up.” he said. Pam just changed her clothes and left. After a week of visitors and reporters watching her, she didn’t want to talk to anyone.

If there is no difference in general intelligence between boys and girls, what can explain girls’ poor performance in science and mathematics?

It seems to be that their treatment at school is a direct cause. Mathematics and science are seen as subjects mainly for boys, and therefore, as girls become teenagers, they are less likely to take them. Interestingly, both boys and girls often regard the subjects for boys as more difficult. Yet it has been suggested that girls do not take mathematics courses, not because they are difficult, but for social reasons. Girls do not want to be in open competition with boys because they are afraid to appear less feminine and attractive.

However, if we examine the performance of boys and girls who have taken mathematics courses, there are still more high-achieving boys than there are girls. This difference appears to be world-wide. Biological explanations have been offered for this, but there are other explanations, too.

Perhaps the difference which comes out during the teenage years has its roots in much earlier experiences. From their first days in kindergarten, boys are encouraged to work on their own and to complete tasks. Facts show that outstanding mathematicians and scientists have not had teachers who supply answers.

Besides, there can be little doubt that teachers of mathematics and science expect their boy students to do better at these subjects than their girl students. They even appear to encourage the difference between boys and girls. They spend more time with the boy students, giving them more time to answer questions and working harder to get correct answers from them. They are more likely to call in boys for answers and to allow them to take the lead in classroom discussion. They also praise boys more frequently. All of this seems to encourage boys to work harder in science and mathematics and to give them confidence that they are able to succeed.

Such a way of teaching is not likely to encourage girls to take many mathematics and science courses, nor is it likely to support girls who do. When it comes to these subjects it seems certain that school widens the difference between boys and girls.

Dear Disney, Last weekend, the four members of my family spent an enjoyable holiday at the Magic Kingdom—Disneyland. And one event made our visit seem truly magical. We got to the front of the line at Space Mountain, only to find out that our little daughter Gloria couldn't take her ice-cream on the ride. We were so excited that we all forgot ice-cream was not allowed on the ride. Gloria broke into tears and we all had no idea what to do. Then Murphy, one of the staff (员工) members, came over. She bent down and told Gloria that she would hold the ice-cream for her and give it to her when she finished the ride. Gloria said, "Promise?" Then she gave Murphy her ice-cream, and she completely enjoyed the ride. Sure enough, as we walked out the exit, there was Gloria's new friend with "her" ice-cream. Now you and I both know what happened, because we know that an ice-cream won't last twenty minutes on a summer afternoon in Florida. Murphy knew what time we would get off the ride; she went to the nearest shop and bought a brand-new ice-cream thirty seconds before we walked out the exit. Gloria said, "Thank you," but I'm sure she thought it was the same ice-cream. We know that someone tried hard to make our visit special. Thanks so much for going above and beyond!

The iPhone, the iPad: each of Apple’s products sounds cool and has become a fad(一时的风尚). Apple has cleverly taken advantage of the power of the letter “i” –-- and many other brands are following suit. The BBC’s iPlayer --- which allows Web users to watch TV programs on the Internet ---used the title in 2008. A lovely bear --- popular in the US and UK --- that plays music and video is called “iTeddy”. A slimmed-down version(简装本) of London’s Independent newspaper was started last week under the name “i”.

In general, single-letter prefixes(前缀) have been popular since the 1990s, when terms such as e-mail and e-commerce(电子商务) first came into use.

Most “i” products are targeted at (针对)young people and considering the major readers of Independent’s “i”, it’s no surprise that they’ve selected this fashionable name.

But it’s hard to see what’s so special about the letter “i”. Why not use “a”, “b”, or “c” instead? According to Tony Thorne, head of the Language Center at King’s College, London, “i” works because its meaning has become ambiguous. When Apple uses “i”, no one knows whether it means Internet, information, individual or interactive, Thorne told BBC Magazines. “Even when Apple created the iPod, it seems it didn’t have one clear definition(定义),” he says.

“However, thanks to Apple, the term is now connected with portability (轻便) .”adds Thorne.

Clearly the letter “i” also agrees with the idea that the Western World is centered on the individual. Each person believes they have their own needs, and we love personalized products for this reason.

Along with “Google” and “blog”, readers of BBC Magazines voted “i” as one of the top 20 words that have come to define the last decade(十年).

But as history shows, people grow tired of fads. From the 1900s to 1990s, products with “2000” in their names became fashionable as the year was connected with all things advanced and modern. However, as we entered the new century, the fashion disappeared.

1. We can infer that the Independent’s “i” is designed for _________.

       A. old readers                                           B. young readers

   C. fashionable women                                     D. engineers

2. The underlined word “ambiguous” means “__________”.

       A. popular               B. clear                     C. uncertain           D. unique

3. Nowadays, the “i” term often reminds people of the products which are __________.

       A. portable         B. environmentally friendly    C. advanced           D. recyclable

4. The writer suggests that __________.

       A. “i” products are often of high quality

       B. iTeddy is alive bear

       C. the letter “b” replaces letter “i” to name the products

       D. the popularity of “i” products may not last long
