| Dear Editor. I am really angry with my parents recently. Next Sunday is my birthday. My parents promised 10 buy a cell phone for me as my birthday present this year. But now when I ask about the birthday present they say they have changed their ideas, because they worry about my study if I get a new cell phone since the final exam is coming soon. They say a cell phone may take up too much of my time. I believe I am old enough to control myself, but they don’t believe me. What’s more, they broke their promise! Li Yan |

Scientists predict that one of the world's coldest countries could be covered by thick forests instead of frozen ice sheets by the end of the century, as climate change brings about the “greening of Greenland”.
Today only four types of trees grow on the island, limited to small areas in the south. More than threequarters of Greenland is covered by ice.
But by the year 2100, “Greenland could become a lot greener, ”says Professor Smith from Aarhus University in Denmark.“Pine tree forests like those in Alaska and Canada will be able to spread over most of Greenland. And it will provide new opportunities for local people.”
The research published in the Journal of Biological Sciences shows that, with expected levels of warming, many North American and European trees and bushes will be able to thrive in now icecovered areas of central and northern Greenland. The speed of forest growth will increase as the planet warms and new trees could cover more than 400, 000 square kilometres—an area almost the size of Sweden—by the end of the century.
The change is likely to alter Greenland's environment greatly, leading to the loss of Arctic animals and plants.
On the other hand, there could be significant commercial benefits for farming and tourism. Humans could play an active role in the greening of Greenland by helping to spread new plant types, says Prof.Smith.
“People love growing plants, whether for food or beauty;it's human nature, ” he says.“This could help plant life spread throughout Greenland more quickly. This certainly has positive aspects for local industry and the economy.”
However, Prof.Smith warns that, besides all these benefits, there are also risks involved in introducing new plants and animals.“If it is not done carefully, the new life forms could spread in an uncontrolled way as no animals or competing plants have evolved to keep their spread in check.”
62. According to the passage, in what direction is the “greening of Greenland” most likely to occur?

63. Which of the following is mentioned as a likely result of the “greening of Greenland”?
A. Fewer people will be able to live there.
B. There will be more Arctic animals living there.
C. The local tree types will die out at a high speed.
D. New forests about the size of Sweden will appear.
64. Prof.Smith's attitude towards the expected changes in Greenland's environment can be described as ________.
A. positive B. negative C. objective D. disappointed
65. The topic of the passage is ________.
A. the effect of global warming on Greenland B. ways people can expand Greenland's forest
C. the promotion of tourism in Greenland D. the Arctic wildlife living in Greenland
After 21 years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take another woman out to dinner and a movie. The other woman was my mother, who has been a widow (寡妇) for 19 years. However, the demands of my work and my three children had made it possible to visit her only occasionally.
That Friday after work, when I arrived at her house, my mother was waiting in the door with her coat on. She had curled (使卷曲) her hair and was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary.
We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and cozy (舒适的). My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. During the dinner, we had an agreeable conversation about nothing extraordinary(非凡的) but just caught up on recent events. We talked so much that we missed the movie.
As we arrived at her house later, she said: “I’ll go out with you again, but only if you let me invite you.” I agreed. A few days later, my mother died of a massive (严重的) heart attack. It happened so suddenly that I didn’t have a chance to do anything for her.
Sometime later, I received an envelope with a copy of a restaurant receipt (收据) from the same place mother and I had dined. An attached note said: “I paid this bill in advance. I wasn’t sure whether I could be there; still, I paid for two plates – one for you and the other for your wife. You will never know what that night meant for me. I love you, Son.”
At that moment, I understood the importance of saying: “I love you” and of giving our loved ones the time they deserve. Nothing in life is more important than family. Give family members the attention they deserve, because these things cannot be put off till some “other” time.

A. his wife, who pushed him to have dinner with his mom
B. his mom, who paid in advance for the next dinner
C. God, who gave him the chance to have dinner with his mom
D. his children, who were very understanding and helpful
34. We can infer from the story that ______.
A. the author doesn’t like his work and children.
B. the author and his mother talked about big events during their dinner
C. the author and his mother saw a movie together after their dinner
D. the author’s mother felt satisfied to have a dinner with her son.
35. The author of this passage tends to agree that______.
A. where there is a will, there is a way.
B. a good heart is sure to find another to match it.
C. we should spend more time with our family.
D. family should be as important as work.

Once a boy came to ask a fisherman how to become cleverer, because his mother always called him “foolish boy”.
“That’s easy,” answered the fisherman. “I know one way to make you become cleverer.”
“Really?”
“Of course. It is said a fish head is good for brain. If you eat one, you’ll become cleverer indeed. Pay only three pounds for one fish head.” The boy paid him three pounds and the fisherman cut off a fish head and handed it to him.
A raw fish head is not good—not even for a hungry boy to eat but the boy ate it up in two gulps.
“Do you feel anything?” asked the fisherman.
“Not in my head,” said the boy.
The boy lay on the ground and thought. “One whole fish costs only two pounds. I had paid him three pounds for the fish head. Air pollution, such as haze, has become a serious problem around the world. Besides wearing a mask, what else can we do to protect ourselves from the dirty air?
Scientists have developed a new inhaler (吸入剂) that can reduce the effect air pollution has on people. It could help millions of people who are suffering from air pollution, the Guardian reports.
This inhaler is developed by German company Bitop and contains a molecule (分子) named Ectoine. The molecule creates a layer (涂层) that protects lungs from polluted air. It’s reported that the inhaler will be affordable to most people when it comes to the market.
Air pollution kills more than three million people a year worldwide and leads to health problems like lung and heart disease and strokes, according to a 2016 research project in the journal Nature. It is also linked to brain disease, mental illness and diabetes (糖尿病).
Andreas Bilstein at Bitop believed that the inhaler could be useful around the world, because air pollution is not just a European problem: “Especially in Asia - China in particular - the demand for such a product is even higher.”
Many Chinese cities have been suffering from haze. According to World Health Organization, two of the 10 most polluted cities in the world in 2015 were in China. About 800,000 deaths that are linked to air pollution take place in the country every year.
However, such inhalers should never be an excuse for not trying to stop air pollution, said Professor Jean Krutmann at the Leibniz Research Institute for Environmental Medicine. “The best thing is that we have clean air and we don’t need any prophylactic (预防性的) treatment,” he said.
28. What is the new inhaler?
A. It can help protect the environment.
B. It can help us reduce the harm of air pollution.
C. It can solve the air pollution problem.
D. It can make the dirty air clean.
29. From the third paragraph, we learn that ______.
A. the inhaler comes from a US company
B. the inhaler is named Ectoine
C. a molecule in the inhaler forms a layer on lungs
D. the inhaler’s price will not be too high for most people
30. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. Air pollution kills millions of people a year worldwide.
B. Air pollution can cause mental illness.
C. There are no air pollution problems in Europe.
D. Air pollution is a serious problem in China.
31. Which is Professor Jean Krutmann’s opinion?
A. Such inhalers mean much to people.
B. We should take action to control air pollution.
C. We can depend on inhalers to solve air pollution problems.
D. We’d better produce more medicines to treat lung diseases.

Dear Li Hua,
Surprise! I enrolled in a camp organized by Chinese Bridge in August and will spend about a week in Changsha. So, we can finally see each other. Learning the Chinese language and visiting some places of interest like Shaoshan Mountain will be part of the camp. I just can’t wait to see you.
Tom.
“Beating is a sign of affection, cursing (骂)is a sign of love.”
Many may not expect to hear the words of the old Chinese saying in these modern times—with parents wealthier and better educated than they have ever been—but experts say they still ring true.
Today, it seems, Chinese parents are more likely to send their children to precollege military academies in the United States in the hope that some tough love will pave the way to success.
“Good education doesn’t mean letting your children enjoy privileges, especially our boys.” said Song Wenming, an entrepreneur (企业家)in Jinhua’ East China’s Zhejiang province. “They should be raised in tough conditions to know what to fight for in the future.”
In August, Song sent his 17yearold son to Valley Forge Military Academy (VFMA) in Pennsylvania. And he is far from alone, even though it takes a lot of money—around $48,000 per year—to send a child to a strict military school.
Statistics show that an increasing number of Chinese students have been registering with such academies.
A few years ago, there were no Chinese students at Valley Forge. Today, there are 28.“All of the Chinese students at Valley Forge came from wealthy families; some of them were spoiled.” said Jennifer Myers, director of marketing and communications at the school.
Song’s only son, Song Siyu, had a rocky start during his first six weeks at the school. The teenager said he went to the school voluntarily but did not expect it to be as difficult.
Now, three months later, he has perfected the art of taking a bath in 35 seconds, finishing a meal without looking at his food, and making his bed with precision. He can even take criticism, no matter how unreasonable.
“The training is hard but I know it is good for selfdevelopment of individuals.” said Song Siyu. “The endless training and scolding are just ways to build up our character; they are not personal.”
But his enthusiasm is not universal. Ten of the 13 Chinese students who joined the academy this year have transferred to other schools.
But for those who stick with it, there is a reward for all the hard work.
25. From the second paragraph, we can know the old Chinese saying ________ .
A. is out of date in modern times B. is disagreed by rich parents
C. is still worth trusting D. is deeply believed by better educated parents
26. The underlined sentence means that _________.
A. Song sent his only son to military school,so he feels lonely
B. Song is the only one who sends his child to military school
C. there are other people sending their children to military school besides Song
D. the fee of the military school is so high that only Song can afford it
27. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. It's likely that more and more Chinese students will attend VFMA.
B. Most Chinese parents approve of educating their children by beating and cursing nowadays.
C. Song Siyu had no difficulty in adjusting to the life at VFMA.
D. Most Chinese students support the way of education at VFMA.
