When my son, Justin, was four, he found a caterpillar (毛毛虫) and put it in a jar. Each day he fed it with fresh grass and leaves. In a few weeks the caterpillar was fat and ready to sleep. One morning we discovered the caterpillar wrapped in a cocoon (). It hung from the top of the jar, an example of one of natures wonders.

Justin was excited. To him it was like Christmas. He knew a moth () or butterfly was about to be born, but he didnt know what kind. He was curious to know what gift nature was about to give him.

Dad! as he ran to me one day. Somethings happening. Come see!

He led me to his room. The cocoon had become clear. We could clearly see the wings of the unborn. A few days later, a beautiful black moth broke free from its silky cage and began to lay eggs on the leaves of grass, completing the life cycle of the little caterpillar.

The next day, I advised my young son it was time to set the moth free. He took the jar outside, opened it, and the little moth flew out. It circled the yard twice, came back, and landed on Justins arm. He picked it up, tossed (轻抛) it in the air, and the moth repeated its flight pattern. He tried over and over to set it free, but each time it would return to his arm.

Justin gave up. He returned his little pet to the jar. The next day he tried to set it free again, and after a few return flights to his arm, the moth finally flew off into the tall grass.

Like a person, I believe the moth was afraid to leave what it was comfortable with. It wanted to stay with something familiar, afraid to move on and experience new things.

Every boy and every girl expects their parents to give them more pocket money. Why do their parents just give them a certain amount?      51   .

The amount of money that parents give to their children to spend as they wish differs from family to family.     52    . Some children get weekly pocket money. Others get monthly pocket money.

First of all, children are expected to make a choice between spending and saving. Then parents should make the children understand what is expected to pay for with the money. At first, some young children may spend all of the money soon after they receive it. Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until it is the right time.      53     .

    Our Autumn Outing

Last Thursday, we have had a class meeting to discuss where to go for our autumn trip. We came up with several choice such as going boating, climbing a mountain, and going to an amusement park. Finally, we decided go mountain climbing.

The next day, we left for early in the morning. While climbing the mountain, we enjoyed the warm sunshine and the beautiful sceneries. However, when we reached the top, we were shocking to see rubbish here and there, such as bottles and banana peels. We felt sadly that many tourists didn't take good care of the nature. Soon, we started to pick them up. With all the rubbish putting in the rubbish bin, the place looked much more beautiful than before.

While we came back, it was 5:30 in the afternoon. We were tired but happy.

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 am. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.

I walked to the door and knocked, “Just a minute,” answered a weak, elderly voice.

After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase. I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the car.

She kept thanking me for my kindness. “It’s nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”

“Oh, you’re such a good man.” She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?”

“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered quickly.

“Oh, I’m in no hurry,” she said. “I’m on my way to a hospice(临终医院). I don’t have any family left. The doctor says I don’t have very long.”

I quietly reached over and shut off the meter(计价器).

For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.

Sometimes she’d ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

At dawn, she suddenly said,” I’m tired. Let’s go now.”

We drove in silence to the address she had given me.

“How much do I owe you?” she asked.

       “Nothing.” I said.

“You have to make a living,” she answered. “Oh, there are other passengers,” I answered.

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held me tightly. Our hug ended with her remark, “You gave an old woman a little moment of joy.”

It was a village in India. The people were poor. However, they were not unhappy. After all, their forefathers had lived in the same way for centuries.

Then one day, some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there were some people elsewhere who liked to eat frog’s legs. However, they did not have enough frogs of their own, and so they wanted to buy frogs from other places.

This seemed like money for nothing. There were millions of frogs in the fields around, and they were no use to the villagers. All they had to do was to catch them. Agreement was reached, and the children were sent into the fields to catch frogs. Every week a truck arrived to collect the frogs and hand over the money. For the first time, the people were able to dream of a better future. But the dream didn’t last long.

The change was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed as if the crops were not doing so well. More worrying was that the children fell ill more often, and there seemed to be more insects around lately.

The villagers decided that they couldn’t just wait to see the crops failing and the children getting weak. They would have to use the money earned to buy pesticides (杀虫剂) and medicines. Soon there was no money left.

Then the people realized what was happening. It was the frog. They hadn’t been useless. They had been doing an important job—eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing more rapidly. They were damaging the crops and spreading (传播) diseases.

Now, the people are still poor. But in the evenings they sit in the village square and listen to sounds of insects and frogs. These sounds of the night now have a much deeper meaning.

Humans: It’s time to give up the earth or face extinction(灭绝).

It could be the plot of a summer blockbuster(成功的电影), but this prediction isn’t science fiction. It’s a glimpse(一瞥) of the future, according to famous British scientist Stephen Hawking. “I see great dangers for the human race,” he said in an interview with global forum(论坛) Big Think. “There have been a number of times in the past when its survival has been a question of touch-and-go.”

Hawking, an award-winning physicist, says humans must evacuate our home planet within the next two centuries and expand into space to survive. “I believe that the long-term future of the human race must be in space,” he said. “It will be difficult enough to avoid disasters on our planet in the next hundred years, let alone the next thousand, or million.”

Hawking, who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom last year, has recently voiced many concerns about the future of life on the earth. In April, he spoke about his fear of aliens in an interview for the Discovery Channel. “If aliens visited us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans,” he said. “Such advanced aliens would perhaps become wanders, looking to conquer and colonize whatever planets they can reach.”

But Hawking says he is still hopeful for the future of humanity. “I’m an optimist,” he told Big Think. “We have made remarkable progress in the last hundred years. But if we want to continue beyond the next hundred years, our future is in space.”

Getting to another planet will prove a challenge, not to mention colonizing it for humanity. University of Michigan astrophysicist(天体物理学家)Katherine Freese told Big Think that “the nearest star to the earth is Proxima Centauri which is 4.2 light years away. That means, if you were travelling at the speed of light the whole time, it would take 4.2 years to get there--or about 50,000 years using current rocket science.”

28. Which of the following is NOT a reason why humans need to give up the earth according to the

   B. It will be hard for humans to avoid disasters on the earth in the future.

Does this situation seem familiar to you?Your English is progressing well, the grammar is now familiar, the reading comprehension is no problem, and you are speaking quite fluently.   36
First of all, remember that you are not alone. Listening is probably the most difficult job for almost all learners of English as a foreign language.   37  .What you need to do is to find listening resources. T he Internet is really a useful tool for English students. You can download The RealPlayer from RealMedia.com. The RealPlayer allows you to use the Internet like a radio station.
Once you have begun to listen on a regular basis, you might still be frustrated (
受阻)by limited understanding. __38__
Here is some of the advice I give my students:
●Accept the fact that you are not going to understand everything.
●Stay relaxed when you do not understand, and try listening to the material for more times.
● Do not translate everything into your native language.
39   Don't concentrate on details before you have understood the main ideas.
● Listen to something you enjoy.
I remember the problems I had in understanding spoken German when I first went to Germany. In the beginning, when I didn't understand a word, I insisted on translating it in my mind.  40  .Then, after the first six months,I discovered two extremely important facts; Firstly, translating creates a barrier between the listener and the speaker. Secondly, most people repeat themselves constantly. By remaining calm, I noticed that even if I didn't pay much attention I could usually understand what the speaker had said.
A. What should you do?
B. But listening is a problem for most of the beginners!
C. However, after several weeks, I got used to the grammar rules
D. The most important thing is to listen as often as possible

E. This method usually resulted in confusion

F. Listen for the general idea of the conversation.

G. But you can't follow a native English speaker at all!
