For the Travel section, writers and editors selected special items to profile from a dozen cities.

Brussels:Chocolate

Nearly half the chocolate consumed in the world is eaten in Europe, and Belgium—with average consumption of 14.99 pounds per person a year—certainly covers its fair share. While Brussels, the country's capital, is home to hundreds of chocolate makers, what makes a visit necessary is the rich heritage of traditional chocolate makers.

Budapest: Paprika (红辣椒)

The job of preparing Hungarian paprika was once considered too dangerous for mothers to do. A woman who touched her children upon returning from work risked burning them, so only the elderly and unmarried were allowed the delicate task of separating the skin from the flesh. But by the early 20th century, sweeter varieties and a machine turned paprika into a common feature of all Hungarian cuisine.

Lisbon: Tiles (瓷砖)

Is there a bluer Country than Portugal? The blue sky and Atlantic Ocean embrace the land. The blue moods of Fado, the dark folk music, form the national soundtrack. And all across Portugal, the typically blue designs of azulejos—ceramic tiles—are spread across churches, castles, palaces, university halls, parks... The result is a beautiful land of Christian saints, Portuguese kings, historical glories, aristocrats at leisure, seascapes and so on.

Madrid: Guitars

Walking into one of Madrid's storied guitar makers' workshops can feel like stepping into the past. Curly wood shavings, from the palest pine to ebony, fall onto the floor as artisans turn some humble wood into works of art. It's painstaking work—all done by hand—with classical guitar models and the methods of making them changing little over the last century.

  1. (1) What does the job of preparing Hungarian paprika suggest?

A . The popularity of Hungarian peppers. B . The difficulty of processing peppers. C . The unique tradition in Budapest. D . The hot level of Hungarian peppers.
  2. (2) Which city can be a splendid setting for a film?

    A . Brussels   . B . Budapest C . Lisbon D . Madrid.
  3. (3) What's the similarity of the four items?

A . They're all treasures of a city. B . They all date back to several centuries. C . Their production processes are all painstaking. D . They all win popularity in most European countries.

Food is one of the necessities in our daily life. It serves as a form of communication in two fundamental ways. Sharing bread or other foods is a common human tradition that can promote unity and trust. Food can also have a specific meaning, and play a significant role in a family or culture's celebrations or traditions. The foods we eat—and when and how we eat them—are often unique to a particular culture or may even differ between countrysides and cities within one country.

Sharing bread, whether during a special occasion or at the family dinner table, is a common symbol of togetherness. Many cultures also celebrate birthdays and marriages with cakes that are cut and shared among the guests. Early forms of cake were simply a kind of bread, so this tradition hits its roots in the custom of sharing bread.

Food also plays an important role in many New Year celebrations. In the southern United States, pieces of corn bread represent blocks of gold for prosperity (兴旺) in the New Year. In Greece, people share a special cake called vasilopita. A coin is put into the cake, which signifies (预示) success in the New Year for the person who receives it.

Many cultures have ceremonies to celebrate the birth of a child, and food can play a significant role. In China, when a baby is one month old, families name and welcome their child in a celebration that includes giving red-colored eggs to guests. In many cultures, round foods such as grapes, bread, and moon cakes are eaten at welcome celebrations to represent family unity.

Nutrition is necessary for life, so it is not surprising that food is such an important part of different cultures around the world.

  1. (1) According to the passage, sharing bread______.
A . can help to develop unity B . indicates a lack of food C . is a custom unique to rural areas D . has its roots in birthday celebrations
  2. (2) The author explains the role of food in celebrations by______.
    A . analyzing causes B . making comparisons C . using examples D . describing processes
  3. (3) What is the passage mainly about?
A . The custom of sharing food. B . The specific meaning of food. C . The role of food in ceremonies. D . The importance of food in culture.

What is a TEDx event?

TEDx brings the spirit of TED's mission of "ideas worth spreading" to local communities around the globe. A TEDx event is a local gathering where live TED-like talks and videos previously recorded at TED conferences are shared with a community. TEDx events are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis. All TEDx events present multiple issues and a diversity of voices from many disciplines. After all, what's the fun without a little variety?

If you want to organize a TEDx event, you'll need to apply for a TEDx license. No one is qualified to organize an event without being granted a license by TED.

So you want to organize a TEDx event?

Before you start you should know the TEDx rules, which are non-negotiable and mandatory.

General rules

* We value and welcome young organizers, but if you're under 18 years old, you must be supervised by an adult. TED doesn't grant licenses to individuals associated with controversial or extremist organizations.

* TED allocates one location-based license series per application. You must live in the city for which you are applying for a license. Your TEDx event must happen in the city for which you received the license.

* Your event must maintain the spirit of TED itself: focused on the power of ideas to change attitudes or lives. Your event may not exceed (超过) one day in length.

* Up to 100 individuals may attend your event. Only individuals who have attended an official TED conference may organize an event with more than 100 attendees. Having attended one or multiple TEDx events or TEDWomen does not qualify you to host an event for more than 100 guests.

* TEDx events are named after locations, such as cities, neighborhoods, streets etc., and aim to serve that named community. Event names must comply with the guideline laid out in naming your event.

Special attentions

※ A TEDx event is not a platform for professional speakers, such as motivational speakers and professional life coaches. Its purpose is to give a platform to those who don't often have one.

※ A TEDx event cannot be used to raise money, not even for a charity.

※ A TEDx event can't be co-branded with an institution except under specific license types – for a college or university, or for internal events (for corporations and organizations).

※ TEDx events may not be used to promote spiritual or religious beliefs, commercial products or any kind of political agenda.

※ Every TEDx event either shows only TED Talk videos to its audience, or shows both TED Talk videos and live speakers from the community. For events less than half a day in length, two TED Talks videos are required to be shown. For longer events, 25% of the total number of talks must be official TED Talk videos.

  1. (1) What do we know from the first part of the passage?
A . TED organization is not responsible for TEDx events. B . TEDx is TED-like but it is operated independently. C . People can give TEDx speeches under no conditions. D . TEDx speeches should follow a single topic principle.
  2. (2) According to the General rules, a TEDx event organizer should ______.
A . extend the event to one day B . hold a TED event first C . name the event after locations D . host the event in different cities
  3. (3) Which of the following people may be allowed to make a TEDx speech?
A . A member of a volunteer group who wants to collect money for the war victims. B . A college student who wants to advocate the use of green and renewable energy. C . A CEO in a high-tech industry who wants to popularize its newest product. D . A professional speaker who wants to motivate people with successful stories.

Fire extinguishers (灭火器) are marked according to the kind of fire on which they should be used. Using the wrong type of extinguisher can be dangerous and make things worse.

Type A extinguishers are used for fires on paper, cloth, wood, rubber, many plastics and so on. These types of fires usually leave ashes when they burn, so use Type A extinguishers for fires that leave ashes.

Type B extinguishers are used for burning liquids, such as oil, gasoline, and paints. These substances often come in barrel-shaped (桶形的) containers, so use Type B extinguishers for such barrels.

Type C extinguishers are used for electrical fires. Electricity travels in a circuit (电路), so use Type C extinguishers for circuits.

Eurail Passes

Ever dreamed of traveling around Europe? If so, then there are several types of Eurail passes available for unlimited rail travel in up to 33 countries. Which one is best for you?

Eurail Global Pass

The Eurail Global Pass is the standard pass, available for unlimited first-class travel for continuous periods ranging from 15 days to three months. Keep in mind that if you choose, say, the 15-day option, you must travel for 15 continuous days; if you skip a day because you want to stay a little longer in Paris, you'll lose that day of travel.

If you're planning to spend a few days in each city before moving on, the Eurail Global Pass Flexi may be a better option. This pass offers first class travel for any 10 or 15 days within a two-month period. The travel days can be continuous or non-continuous; the choice is yours.

Eurail Select Passes

While Eurail Global Passes are ideal for extensive multinational transportation, travelers who are visiting only three to five countries may be better off purchasing a Eurail Select Pass. With this, you may choose to travel within three, four or five bordering European countries for a duration of five, six, eight or 10 days within a two-month period. If selecting five countries, you also have the option of 15 travel days. The 28 different countries available allow for hundreds of different combinations.

Youth Pass

Travelers between the ages of 12 and 26 can save 35 percent by purchasing the Youth Pass, which essentially provides the same benefits as the regular Eurail Global Pass, except that you travel in second class rather than first class. Passes for children 4–11 cost half of the adult fare, and children under 4 travel free.
