If you find yourself checking your phone first thing in the morning, if you find you're text-messaging while driving, checking your phone instead of working on an important assignment—you are addicted.

Don't worry. The new NoPhone might be just the thing you need. It looks and feels exactly like a smartphone, but it does nothing. It's just a piece of plastic that you can carry around in your hand to fool yourself.

NoPhone is currently a prototype(手机模型) that will cost only $12 once it hits the market. Its makers are trying to raise $30,000 in order to cover the production and marketing costs.

Dutch designer Ingmar Larsen, who helped create the NoPhone, said that he had the idea as a joke along with his friends Van Gould and Ben Langveld. To their great surprise, the idea received a lot of attention online and people from all over the world started placing requests for NoPhone of their own, so that's when the three friends decided to raise money for mass production.

David H said,“ I used to sleep with my phone in my hand, but my night errors would cause me to throw it across the room in an unconscious panic. With the NoPhone, I can still enjoy the comfort of holding a phone in my sleep, without waking up to a shattered screen, thanks, NoPhone.”

If you're interested in NoPhone, but concerned about not being able to takeselfies anymore, don't worry. The makers do have an update at no extra charge—the mirror sticker. That way, they say, you can enjoy “real-time” selfies with your friends when they're standing right behind you.

  1. (1) From the third paragraph we can infer that_______.
A . NoPhone is a device made of high technology. B . the makers want to raise money to improve their technology. C . NoPhone has not been on the market at present. D . the users of NoPhone can stay away from the real world.
  2. (2) What made the designers surprised was that________.
A . many people thought of the idea as a joke at first B . people in Dutch began to make NoPhone of their own C . people worldwide began to fund mass production D . people worldwide were interested in NoPhone on the net
  3. (3) According to David H, he often ______at night.
    A . used his smartphone B . had nightmare C . became unconscious D . looked for his smartphone
  4. (4) What does the underlined phrases “take selfies” most probably mean?
A . take a photo of oneself B . get in touch with someone C . take the place of someone D . catch sight of someone

For the business traveler who is all about efficiency: Check out these hotels that will get you in and out with a minimum of trouble. When you are pressed for time on a business trip, nothing can infuriate you more than a slow hotel check-in process. On your next trip, try these hotels that offer a speedier check-in process.

⒈Yotel New York

The self-service kiosks at this high-tech New York hotel work just like the ones you'd see at an airport. There are just five-steps to register and obtain your card key. There is even a robotic luggage bellboy. You tap in the number of bags you are carrying and sizes, then wait for a robot arm to swing down and store your luggage in a locker (say, for a day trip). This also speeds up the check-in process if the first thing you need to do, like me, is head to a series of meetings.

⒉Marriott Detroit Airport

Another option for business travelers in a hurry: Marriott is rolling out its mobile check-in app to 325 hotels this year, including the Marriott Detroit Airport hotel. (I've tested the app itself but not for a real visit quite yet.) Here is the basic idea: you download the iphone or Android app. The night before, you can “check-in” virtually. When you arrive, you get an alert that the room is ready and your key, which is already tied to your reservation, is waiting for you at the desk.

⒊Hyatt Regency Minneapolis

I happened to stay at this hotel recently and liked how fast the kiosk check-in works. Like the Yotel, the kiosk asks you to insert your credit card, similar to an airport terminal. The whole process took about three minutes, when I left, I was equally impressed with the fast check-out. An agent meets you in the lobby with an ipad and asks for an email to use for a receipt. The big advantage: you never have to wait in line.

⒋Radisson: LaCrosse

The Radisson is trying to make the kiosk process even faster, at a few select hotels like the Radisson Lacrosse in Wisconsin, you use a mobile app to register and then receive a barcode by email or text. When you get to the kiosk, you scan the barcode to get your key without any other steps required. It's super fast. You can find this new check-in system at the Radisson hotels in Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Phoenix as well.

  1. (1) Which two hotels offer a mobile app for customers to check in?
A . Yotel New York and Marriott Detroit Airport. B . Marriott Detroit Airport and Radisson: LaCrosse. C . Marriott Detroit Airport and Hyatt Regency Minneapolis. D . Hyatt Regency Minneapolis and Radisson: LaCrosse.
  2. (2) Which hotel will send you a receipt by email?
    A . Yotel New York. B . Marriott Detroit Airport. C . Radisson: LaCrosse. D . Hyatt Regency Minneapolis.
  3. (3) Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A . At Yotel New York, a robot will help you with all the check-in process. B . With its check-in app, you may enter your room in Marriott without a key. C . The barcode you receive from Radisson contributes to the fast check-in. D . Hyatt Regency Minneapolis is close to an airport terminal.

Most of us would be traveling for the rest of our lives if traveling abroad were not so expensive. But there is no need for you to cut down on the number of holidays you're having this year. Below are some of the cheapest places to travel to this year.

    Sri Lanka

Great seafood, beautiful beaches, and amazing jungles await you in Sri Lanka. It is definitely one of the cheaper places to travel to as well. It will be possible for you to live in high-class hotels and resorts for as little as 70 dollars a night! If you don't want to spend that much money, you can find hostels, and smaller hotels for as little as 20 dollars a day. You can just spend the day exploring Anuradhapura or go adventuring in Habarana Lake as well!

    Hungary

It might be surprising to see Hungary on the list of cheap places to travel to this year. It is located in the most expensive continent on the earth, after all. However, Hungary is the country where you get rooms for as little as 16 Euros, and beer for about 4 Euros each! This is definitely a bargain! You can get a travel card to use the public transport throughout the country, and save quite a few dollars on that as well. Spend a few nights in Budapest or head out to the northern hills where you can hike and swim in the clear lakes!

    Greece

There was a time when Greece was unbelievably expensive, but due to its recent economic problems, Greece has become quite cheap to travel to. Price of accommodation and food is at an all-time low, so this might definitely be a great time for you to visit! There are some areas of the country that will be expensive like Santorini or Mykonos, but if you just want to explore local Greek culture, you can walk on the streets of Greece, or adventure across the smaller islands around like Kefalonia or Piraeus or Los!

  1. (1) If Jack plans to stay in Sri Lanka for five days, he will pay at least ________ for the accommodation.
    A . $100 B . $125 C . $250 D . $350
  2. (2) Why is it surprising that Hungary is on the list of cheap places to travel to?

  3. (3) What can we learn about Greece?

Li Hua is currently studying at Cambridge, UK. She has bought a bicycle and is worried about security. Her friend, Kate, found this article and sent it to her.

    Introduction

A lot of crime is against bicycles. About 150, 000 bicycles are stolen every year and most are never found. You can prevent this happening by following a few careful steps.

    Basic Security

Do not leave your bicycle in out-of-the-way places. Always lock your bicycle when youleave. Secure it to lampposts or trees. Take off smaller parts and take them with you, for example lights and saddlesleave(车座).

    Locks

Get a good lock. There are many different types in the shops. Buy one that has been tested against attack. Ask for a recommendation from a bike shop.

    Marking

Security marking your bike can act as a deterrent to a thief. It can also help the police find your bicycle. It should be clearly written and include your postcode and your house or flat number. This will provide a simple way to identify your bicycle.

    Registration (登记)

There are a number of security companies who will help mark your bicycle for you. They will then put your registration number and personal details on their computer database. Then if your bicycle is found it will be easy to contact you.

    Finally

Keep a record of the bicycle yourself: its maker, model and registration number. You can even take a photograph of it. This will prove the bicycle belongs to you.

Dear Jamie,

I'm writing to you because I feel like we've grown distant lately. I know you have two little babies now that take up most of your attention, but I want to remind you that I'm your dog. My name is Max, and I am here long before those two troublemakers joined our family. The older one, Hannah, keeps trying to ride me. She knows I'm not a horse, right? Let's remember that I'm 11 now. That's 77 years old to you, friend. So how about showing me some respect I deserve?

Anyway, I'm still an official part of this family. I know I have made mistakes with food, but those kids are covered with so much food. It's like an alcoholic living in a wine store. I have tried harder not to eat their food, but this business of forcing me to the backyard for most of the day was unacceptable.

And when you told your wife Kate that you wanted to drop me off in the valley to live with wolves, well, that hurt my self-respect. And did you have to do it right in front of me? I might be old, but I can still hear.

Remember the old days? By the time you came into the picture, I had already known Kate for three years. And then you came along. I knew she liked you so I welcomed you into our world. I remembered one night, she asked me if I thought you were the one. I barked "yes" repeatedly because I thought you would take great care of us. And you did.

Look, I know you're a father of two now, but please try to include me a little bit more. That's all I'm asking.

Sincerely yours,

Max the Puggle

A . It was badly treated by his kids. B . It was not treated as a human. C . It felt it was being ignored. D . It didn't have enough to eat.
  2. (2) What problem did Max admit(承认)?
A . It stole the kids' food to eat. B . The kids had too much food. C . It couldn't help drinking alcohol. D . It hated being left at the backyard.
  3. (3) What does Max think of his master?
A . He thinks of only himself not others. B . He has changed into a cruel man. C . His words agree with his actions. D . He acts as kick down the ladder.

Aquaman is an American superhero movie based on the Aquaman line of comic book titles published by DC Comics. Arthur Curry, the human-born heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, goes on a quest to prevent a war between the worlds of ocean and land. And the main power from the Trident(三叉戟) makes him the true protector of the deep in the end.

The movie opens with how Arthur's mother, Queen Atlanna of Atlantis, and his father, lighthouse keeper Tom Curry, met, fell in love, and had a son named Arthur. When the Atlantians come calling, wanting their queen to return and fulfill her part of an arranged marriage, she goes back to Atlantis in order to protect her husband and young son. That boy grows up to be a man with special strength, speed and power. Arthur Curry, half human and half from Atlantis, then goes on a trip of a lifetime. Not only does this adventure make him come to terms with his real identity, but it also forces him to discover whether he is entirely worthy of meeting his own destiny: becoming a king.

This is a big movie, in every sense-big action, big sets and big drama. The special effects are extraordinary, given that much of the action takes place underwater or, at least, has to look like it does. The downside is that the movie starts to feel a bit boring by the second hour. Yes, the movie has elements of other successful fantasy dramas, like the Star Trek movies, Jurassic Park and Romancing Stone, but movies of this nature are somewhat similar these days. In the Marvel or DC universes, with so many heroes and villains(反派角色), it's hard to be entirely fresh but Aquaman has done a pretty good job

  1. (1) All of the following are covered in the passage EXCEPT______.
    A . the plot B . the star C . the authors attitude D . its special effects
  2. (2) The movie Aquaman is______.
A . different from other successful fantasy movies B . a superhero movie adapted from comic books C . the story of how Queen Atlanna and Tom Curry fell in love with each other D . boring from beginning to end
  3. (3) What is the author's attitude towards the movie?
    A . Critical. B . Negative. C . Indifferent. D . Neutral.

First introduced in 1927, The Hardy Boys Stories are a series (系列) of books about the stories of brothers Frank and Joe Hardy, teenaged detectives who solve one mystery (神秘) after another. The cover of The Hardy Boys says that the author of the series is Franklin. Over the years, though, many fans of the books have been surprised to find out that Franklin is not a real person. If Franklin never existed, then who wrote The Hardy Boys Stories?

The Hardy Boys are written through a process called ghostwriting (鬼手写作). A ghostwriter writes a book according to a fixed formula (公式). Although ghostwriters are paid for writing the books, their names do not appear on the published books. Ghostwriters can write books for children or adults, the content of which is various.

The idea for The Hardy Boys series was developed by a publisher named Stratemeyer. He noticed the increasing popularity of mysteries among adults, and thought that children would enjoy reading mysteries about younger detectives of their age. He first developed each book with an outline (提纲). Once having completed the outline, he then hired a ghostwriter to turn it into a book of over 200 pages. After finishing a draft (草稿) of a book, he or she would send it back to Stratemeyer, who would make a list of corrections and mail it back to the ghostwriter. The ghostwriter would improve the book according to Stratemeyer's suggestions and then return it to him. Once Stratemeyer approved the book, it was ready to be published.

The Hardy Boys had a number of different ghostwriters producing books. However, the first ghostwriter, Leslie, proved to be the most influential. Although he was using prepared outlines as guides, Leslie developed the characters through his imagination. He was also responsible for the details in the story. For example, Leslie created Bayport, the Hardy Boys' hometown, based on where he grew up.

Although The Hardy Boys were very popular with children, not everyone approved of them. Critics thought their stories were not real, since most teenagers did not have the same experience as Frank and Joe Hardy. Besides, many teachers and librarians are against the ghostwriting process, saying it was designed to produce books quickly, but not to create quality literature. Some libraries even refuse to include the books in their children's collections.

Dear Daisy,

Phew! I'm so glad the day is over. I'm really tired, but my first day at school went well.

First of all, we met outside the school building. I was very nervous because my primary school only had 300 pupils but in the middle school there are about 1, 300. What a difference! The older pupils are really big. I felt so small waiting there in front of the school.

The head teacher came out and told us to go into the school hall. Then he called our names out to tell us which class we were in. My class teacher is called Mrs. Black. She took us to our classroom. It's on the 5th floor. We aren't allowed to use the lift! I couldn't believe it.

We spent all morning with Mrs. Black looking at our timetables. Everyone in the school had a different timetable. I'm worried that I'll forget my timetable and go to the wrong room.

Lunchtime was OK. I had salad, fish and fruit, which was quite good, and then I went to play football with some of the other boys. They were all friendly and I don't think it will take me long to make friends.

After lunch we started lessons. I had maths and then history, where we started to learn about ancient Greece. That looked interesting. I have to do some homework tonight to find out how the ancient Greek people lived, so I'm going to do an Internet search and look it up in the library.

So far so good. I am quite looking forward to tomorrow, even though I've got science. I hate science!

Yours,

Jason
