Hi everybody,
We saw your names on the Penfriends list. You all said you wanted to get e-mails from the English children. So here we are!
We live near Oxford, in the south of England. We are 11 years old (Emma) and 10 years old (Ben).
We go to school in Oxford. Our school has 400 boys and girls between 8 and 13. We have lessons from Monday to Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to, lunchtime. (School lunches are horrible! We don't like them.) After lunch, we usually have lessons or sports until 4:15. We have lessons about English, French, Maths, science, history, geography, art and some other subjects.
Emma's favourite subjects are Maths and science. Her worst subject is geography. Ben's favourite subjects are art and French. His worst subject is Maths.
There are three terms in a year, and we do different sports in each term.
Autumn term: rugby(橄榄球) for boys, netball (无挡板篮球) for girls
Winter term: football and hockey (曲棍球)
Summer term: cricket(板球),swimming, tennis and athletics (田径运动) We like sports but we're not very good at any of them! At home we like playing computer games, sending e mails to our friends, cycling (Emma) and photographing (Ben).
Write and tell us about you and your schools in Egypt, Japan, Russia and Spain. Emma and Ben

Disneyland(迪士尼)is a wonderful place. It is full of magic and fun. Many people want to work there, and get to be a part of Disney magic every day!
If you want to work at Disneyland, you should know the rules. It may be one of the most interesting places in the world, but the rules are kind of strange!
Rule 1: Disneyland employees(员工)must answer the visitors' questions carefully. If they are not sure, they may find someone who does or call their manager.
Rule 2: Disneyland employees mustn't discuss their job on social media(社交网络). If they break this rule, they may get fired.
Rule 3: Disneyland employees mustn't point. If people ask them for directions, they must gesture(手势)with two fingers(手指)or their hand, never one finger.
Dear Helen,
How's everything? I'm glad to get your letter. You asked me what I did last weekend. Now let me tell you. Last weekend I went to a forest with my parents. We left for the forest by car early in the morning on Saturday. When we got there, it was about 11:30 a. m. We had some rice and vegetables for lunch. After lunch, we had a short rest. In the afternoon, we went fishing by the lake. We caught some small fish. At night, we put up our tents and camped in the forest. It was exciting to sleep in a tent! On Sunday morning, we rode horses, flew kites and fed sheep. After lunch, we drove back home. We were tired but happy.
How about your weekend? Please write and tell me.
Yours,
Jessica

One Day One day I counted your fingers and kissed each one. One day the first snowflakes fell, and I held you up and watched them melt on your baby skin. One day, we crossed the street, and you held my hand tight. Then, you were my baby, and now you are my child. Sometimes, when you sleep, I watch your dream, and I dream too... That someday you will dive into the cool, clear water of a lake. Someday you will walk into a deep wood. Someday you will run so fast and so far, your heart will feel like fire. Someday you will swing high, so high, higher than you ever dared to swing. Someday you will hear something so unhappy that you will fold up with sorrow. Someday you will call a song to the wind, and the wind will carry your song away. Someday I will stand on this porch and watch your arms waving to me until I no longer see you. Someday you will look at this house and wonder how something that feels so big can look so small. Someday I will watch you brushing your child's hair. Someday, a long time from now, your own hair will glow silver in the sun. And when that day comes, love, you will remember me. |

Four Major Plateaus(四大高原) in China |
|
Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is the largest plateau in China and the highest in the world, covering about 2.5 million square kilometers. Its elevation(海拔)is between 4,000 and 5,000 meters. |
|
The second largest plateau in China, Inner Mongolian Plateau, is between 1,000 and 1,400 meters above sea level in north China. |
|
The Loess (黄土)Plateau is on the west of Taihang Mountains and on the east of Qilian Mountains. It covers 400,000 square kilometers and is between 1,500 to 2,000 meters above sea level. |
|
Covering Guizhou Province and eat Yunnan Province, Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau is between 1,000 to 2,000 meters above sea level. It is the smallest of the four. The famous Huangguoshu Waterfall is on the plateau. |
Dear Emma,
Your problem is like a circle. It is because you spend less time with them. The harder you study, the less time you have to spend with friends and the less friendly you look to your classmates. So you should spend more time with them.
Look at your classmates. Are there any people with whom you feel you have a lot in common or trust? You can make friends with them first. The advice is as follows:
First, smile at your classmates. Do this as often as you can, until your classmates become used to your smiles and smile back. Next, talk to your classmates. You can do this during your lunch time. You may find it easier to start by talking to people when they are alone. Perhaps you could ask a classmate about your studies.
They are likely to respond (回应) in a very positive way. People like to feel important and helpful.
There must be someone else in your class who is also quiet. It might be easier to try to talk with him or her. Your problem is mainly about confidence. Smile first, talk next and slowly you will make friends. The most important point is that: Unless you have more confidence, you can't make as many friends as you want.
Editor
Andrea is an American writer. She has written more than 20 books, including her latest collection of poems, Martin Rising: Requiem for a King.
Reporter: What inspired(激励)you to become a writer?
Andrea: When I was in second grade, my dad got me a notebook. He said if I had a thought, l could just write it down. He said it didn't have to be perfect. So that's where it started. Then, when I was in sixth grade, there was a writing competition at my school. My teacher entered me for the competition. I wrote a story about a man made of fire. It was a mess, but my story won. I felt good, and I thanked my teacher for that.
Reporter: What were some of your favorite books when you were a kid?
Andrea: One was The Snowy Day. That was really the first mainstream(主流的) book to have an African-American kid as the main character. I loved Peter, and this kid looked just like me. I loved that book.
Reporter: You're both a writer and an editor (编辑). What's the difference between the two jobs?
Andrea: When I write, I'm creating what's going to go in the book. When I'm editing, I'm helping other writers say what they want to say. As an editor, I also pass messages between the writer and the illustrator(插图画家), who typically do not meet each other.
Reporter:
Andrea: Write about things that are important to you. Believe that you can do it, and don't let anybody tell you that you can't.
