Dear Helen,

How's everything? I'm glad to get your letter. You asked me what I did last weekend. Now let me tell you. Last weekend I went to a forest with my parents. We left for the forest by car early in the morning on Saturday. When we got there, it was about 11:30 a. m. We had some rice and vegetables for lunch. After lunch, we had a short rest. In the afternoon, we went fishing by the lake. We caught some small fish. At night, we put up our tents and camped in the forest. It was exciting to sleep in a tent! On Sunday morning, we rode horses, flew kites and fed sheep. After lunch, we drove back home. We were tired but happy.

How about your weekend? Please write and tell me.

Jessica

One Day

One day I counted your fingers and kissed each one.

One day the first snowflakes fell, and I held you up and watched them melt on your baby skin.

One day, we crossed the street, and you held my hand tight.

Then, you were my baby, and now you are my child.

Sometimes, when you sleep, I watch your dream, and I dream too...

That someday you will dive into the cool, clear water of a lake.

Someday you will walk into a deep wood.

Someday you will run so fast and so far, your heart will feel like fire.

Someday you will swing high, so high, higher than you ever dared to swing.

Someday you will hear something so unhappy that you will fold up with sorrow.

Someday you will call a song to the wind, and the wind will carry your song away.

Someday I will stand on this porch and watch your arms waving to me until I no longer see you.

Someday you will look at this house and wonder how something that feels so big can look so small.

Someday I will watch you brushing your child's hair.

Someday, a long time from now, your own hair will glow silver in the sun.

And when that day comes, love, you will remember me.

  1. (1) From the poem, why did "you" hold "my" hand tight when crossing the street one day?
A . Because "I" showed a great interest in fingers. B . Because "I" enjoyed holding people's hands. C . Because "you" were not old enough at that time. D . Because "you" wanted to help "me" cross the street.
  2. (2) What does the underlined word sorrow mean?
    A . Anger. B . Joy. C . Sadness. D . Hope.
  3. (3) In which column of a magazine can you read this poem?
    A . Health. B . Family. C . Food. D . Sports.

Dear Emma,

Your problem is like a circle. It is because you spend less time with them. The harder you study, the less time you have to spend with friends and the less friendly you look to your classmates. So you should spend more time with them.

Look at your classmates. Are there any people with whom you feel you have a lot in common or trust? You can make friends with them first. The advice is as follows:

First, smile at your classmates. Do this as often as you can, until your classmates become used to your smiles and smile back. Next, talk to your classmates. You can do this during your lunch time. You may find it easier to start by talking to people when they are alone. Perhaps you could ask a classmate about your studies.

They are likely to respond (回应) in a very positive way. People like to feel important and helpful.

There must be someone else in your class who is also quiet. It might be easier to try to talk with him or her. Your problem is mainly about confidence. Smile first, talk next and slowly you will make friends. The most important point is that: Unless you have more confidence, you can't make as many friends as you want.

Editor

  1. (1) What's the cause of Emma's problem?
  2. (2) How can Emma solve the problem?
  3. (3) When should Emma talk to her classmates?
  4. (4) How many pieces of advice does the editor give Emma?
  5. (5) What's Emma's problem mainly about?

Reporter: What inspired(激励)you to become a writer?

Andrea: When I was in second grade, my dad got me a notebook. He said if I had a thought, l could just write it down. He said it didn't have to be perfect. So that's where it started. Then, when I was in sixth grade, there was a writing competition at my school. My teacher entered me for the competition. I wrote a story about a man made of fire. It was a mess, but my story won.
