Many things can cause stress in a child's life, but you must remember that some kinds of stress are good and 1 are bad. The good kind of stress can help you to do things 2 . For example, you may do a better job on your report because the worry makes you prepare it well 3 you read it to the class.
Some stress is bad if the stressful feelings keep going for a long time. You may not feel well if your parents are 4 , if a family member is sick or if you're having 5 at school. That kind of stress isn't going to help you, and it can make you 6 .
If you find that you are stressed, you can try talking about what is troubling you with 7 adult that you trust(信任), 8 a parent or a teacher. He or 9 may have some good ideas and tell you 10to solve your problems.

Dear Mrs Daniels,
I recently saw your advertisement on the university website offering private English lessons.I'm very interested in your private lessons and would like some more information.I am a student at Aston College here in Hong Kong studying English,so my language level is already quite good.
However,I feel that I need to improve my listening and speaking skills. This is because I'm planning to study at London University in England next year and I think your lessons will help me to live and study abroad.
Could you send me some more information about the lessons offered, such as where and when they will be held and how much they cost? Also,I would like to know whether you teach students in groups or one-on-one.
I would be glad to supply any further information you might need.
Regards,
Li Hua
A new term has begun. Teachers are worried about the fact that new students are not easy to deal with. They like to bring cell phones and MP3 players to school. What is 1, some students even use cell phones 2out-of-class matters in class, or sometimes just for fun. Some 3 students listen to MP3 players when they are having a lesson that they are not interest in.
Are these new students really that 4? “Yes.” says Delaney Kirk, a professor at Drake University. 5 she adds it's not their fault. 6, the teachers should be blamed(责备). Mrs Kirk first began thinking about students' manners six years ago. “I had my first class in which students were sleeping or talking to each other. It seemed that learning well or had nothing to do with them.” she says. “At first, I got worried about this.” But then I said to myself, “You're giving lessons, and you need to manage this kind of situation. These students need to know more about manners. It's time to help them develop some good 7. They shouldn't waste time doing nothing when they are young. Sooner or later, they may regret the time they8.”
Mrs Kirk also 9a list of suggestions to help teachers better manage their classes. The following are among her suggestions:
●On the first day of class, tell students how they will benefit(受益) by taking the class and the importance of listening carefully in class.
●Do not allow them to bring cell phones or MP3 players to the class at all.
● Tell them how to use cell phones or MP3 players 10.
Homesick is a compound word made up of HOME and SICK. You know what each word means on its own, of course. But think about what the words mean when they are used together. Homesick means SICK FOR HOME.
Now think for a minute about SEASICK. If you change the word home in the definition(释义)to the word sea, would the definition fit SEASICK? Seasick means SICK BY THE MOVEMENT ON THE SEA. When you are homesick, the only place you want to be is at home. When you are seasick, the last place you want to be is at sea.
Have you ever heard of a person being heartsick? Heartsick doesn't mean that something is wrong with a person's heart. People are heartsick when they are hurt deep inside and when they feel as if their hearts are broken.
But, on the other hand, we have such compound words as handshake, handstand, and handbag. Perhaps you may write definitions for them.
I often hear some students say English is difficult, and it gives them a headache. But English is very easy for me. I'm good 1 it. I'm very glad to tell you something about 2 I study English.
First, I think 3 the interest in English is the most important thing in learning English. When I began 4 English, it was fresh for me. I was interested in 5, so I worked very hard. Soon we had an English exam and I 6 a very good mark. How Happy I was! After that, I learn English 7 and harder. Our English teacher often teaches us English songs, and the songs sound 8. I often think English is very interesting!
9, English is a foreign language, so I learn it well in the following ways: listen to the teacher carefully, speak bravely, read aloud and expand the vocabulary. Then practice again and again. And I 10 have a good habit: asking for help whenever I have question 11 I can't understand. I must make it clear by asking my English teacher or classmates. 12 happy I am when I understand!
Besides, I often read English articles, jokes and easy novels. They help me 13 the meanings of some words well.14 doing more reading is an important way to learn English well. And I also 15 diaries in English. English has become a close friend of mine.
Why do we need to learn math? Many students around the world ask this question. They don't like to learn math. So a company in America started an exhibition called "MathAlive!" It tells students why math is important. The exhibition provides 40 interactive(交互式的)experiences. They teach students how to use math in everyday life. |
In England, a primary school opened and "anger class" for young students. Some students in the class are only five years old. About 40 students in this school have bad behavior in just one year. So the school opened this class. In this class, the students can learn how to control their anger. |
In America, there is special middle school in New York. You can't see teachers at the school and you don't have to do your homework. All the students study according to his or her own needs. They can learn in groups or by themselves. Although there are no teachers, the students can still get good grades at the end of the term. Jim, a student from this middle school, said," I can study without any stress and I can do some useful things by myself. I feel very happy here!" |
Students learn their lessons in class. In class 1 teach them. Students sit in the classroom listening to the teacher. This is a way of 2. Is this the 3 way for students to learn something? Of course not. There is 4 way to learn. Students can teach 5. For example, if you can't remember something 6 you are doing your homework, you can look at your book to find the 7. This is a way to teach yourself. And it is not a 8 thing. We can do this at any place and at any time.
How do you teach yourself? The first thing you must do is 9. Read something you are 10 in, or you have to read. The second is that you must ask yourself questions. The question is something you don't 11 or you want to know more about. You can write down these questions. A 12 student is usually good at asking questions. The 13 you must do is that you must answer the question yourself 14 thinking hard, by reading the text of other books, but 15 by asking other people. This is the way of teaching yourself. And you must do this by yourself. If you keep doing like this for a long time, you are sure to be successful in your study.
How do you study every day? You may answer it in one second: have classes at school, take notes and do homework. Feeling a little bored? There are other ways that can make learning interesting and varied(多样化). It's called digital learning.
Digital learning is a way to help students learn by using the Internet. There are three important kinds of digital learning. Apps are computer software applications(应用). People can download them on their mobiles. The other two kinds are social networking services, including Weibo and WeChat and websites. Each one of them is like your teacher. They help you master what you learn at school.
Compared with traditional learning ways, digital learning has its advantages. Digital learning is also varied. It covers almost every school subject. More importantly, it always offers students the newest resources(资源)to learn from.
Digital learning is also personalized. You can choose what you like to learn. If you don't master what you have learned at school, you can learn again through digital ways.
However, digital learning also has disadvantages. When you use digital ways to learn, you've got little chance of talking with teachers and classmates. As digital learning uses computers or smartphones, watching the screen too long may be bad for your eyes. It is better to take a rest every 20 minutes.

Helping your children to read and write at home will improve their skills and confidence- it will also make them get ready for learning in the classroom environment.
________________ are needed by every child in every subject in every year of their life in or outside school.
Students who improve their reading and writing skills will increase their vocabulary and their ability (能力) to use the English language correctly. As parents, you can play an important role in improving your children's literacy (读写能力). You can make a difference by listening, asking questions, giving information, and reading with your children outside school hours.
Here are 8 tips on how to help your children to read and write:
having everyday conversations with your children
trying to ask more "wh-"questions instead of easy "yes" or "no" questions
encouraging your children to talk about events you don't know
reading to your children each night
listening to your children read
teaching your children how to use dictionaries
talking about your children's writings
practicing filling in forms, writing letters, sending cards or emails
You can also encourage your children to join the Reading Challenge Club and discuss the books they are reading together. In the club, children must read 15 books from the Challenge book list and 5 more books chosen by themselves. There are over 1,000 books on the list. The reading must be done in one year. What's more, it is a wonderful way to help your children to write. For example, you can encourage them to write diaries or book reviews. Remember to make positive comments as much as possible.
A firehouse is place where firefighters come to work. They keep neighborhoods safe by fighting fires. They help save people from the smoke and flames of a fire. At Engine Company 16 in Chicago, firefighters help in other ways. They welcome neighborhood children inside the firehouse. The firefighters show children what to do in case of fire. The firefighters and the children become good friends.
In this firehouse, children can see and touch all the equipment used to put out fires. The firefighters are willing to answer their questions and show them how to use the equipment. Children can also play with" Smokey" in the firehouse. Smokey is a made-up character. He is a strong bear. Firefighters use Smokey to tell about the danger of forest fires. They want people to be safe in the woods. Smokey says, "Only you can prevent forest fires." Smokey tells people to be careful in the woods. He says to tell a ranger(护林员) if you smell smoke or see fire. Get away from the fire quickly. Heavy smoke can make it hard to breathe.
Forest fires give off 80 much heat that plants can die. It is too hot for them to grow anymore.
We should.
One of the biggest mistakes people make when they're trying to impress someone is that they think people only pay attention to the important or "big” things they do. But the1is that the little things are also very important. It's the little things we do or don't do every day that2us into who we are. People will remember the little things you do and that can make the3. Here are some little things you should pay much attention to.
Be on time. 4you're late for something, you re giving someone the opportunity to judge you without you even being there. If you say you're going5 at a certain time, then be there at that time. waiting for someone when they should already be there is6.
Don't break your promises. There are too many people making promises that they know they can't7. They do so because it makes the other people feel better at that moment. The problem is that down the road, when you don't follow through, that person will feel disappointed and8angry. If you can't keep a promise, don't make it. If you do make a promise, do9you can to keep it.
Respect others10includes your elders, friends, co-workers. family members, etc. This can be hard when you have to be around someone who has different opinions11you, or who acts in a12you don't agree with. But you can still be polite. If you respect others, you will win respect for13.
Say "Please" and "Thank you" often. These are small things but they go a long way. Expressing your thanks to people, even for the smallest acts of14, shows that you see the good in people. It15that you pay attention to the things people around you are doing and saying.
Kids will often ignore your requests for them to shut off the TV, start their chores, or do their homework as a way to avoid following your directions. Before you know it, you've started to sound like a broken record as you repeatedly ask them to do their assignments, clean their room, or take out the trash. Rather than saying, “Do your chores now.” you'll be more effective if you set a target time for when the chores have to be completed. So instead of arguing about starting chores, just say, “If chores aren't done by 4 p.m., here are the consequences.” Then it's up to your child to complete the chores. Put the ball back in their court. Don't argue or fight with them, just say, “That's the way it's going to be.” It shouldn't be punitive (惩罚性的) as much as it should be persuasive. “If your chores aren't done by 4 p.m., then no video game time until chores are done. And if finishing those chores runs into homework time, that's going to be your loss.” On the other hand, when dealing with homework, keep it very simple. Have a time when homework starts, and at that time, all electronics go off and do not go back on until you see that their homework is done. If your kids say they have no homework, then they should use that time to study or read. Either way, there should be a time set aside when the electronics are off.
When a kid wears his iPod or headphones when you're trying to talk to him, make no bones about it; he is not ignoring you, he is disrespecting you. At that point, everything else should stop until he takes the earplugs out of his ears. Don't try to communicate with him when he's wearing headphones-even if he tells you he can hear you. Wearing them while you're talking to him is a sign of disrespect. Parents should be very tough about this kind of thing. Remember, mutual respect becomes more important as children mature.
School backpacks are always a hot topic in China. Some Chinese parents buy hardcover school backpacks from Japan, although they can be as expensive as 5,000 yuan, according to Chinese newspaper Urban Express. These backpacks are popular because the hard cover helps hold books in place. This can help kids keep their balance and preserve their spines (脊柱). But it turns out that the bags can be hardly fit in the students' desks.
A good backpack is important for children's health. "It can make pressure less on the shoulders," says Dr. Rob Danoff from the US. He also says students need a backpack that's made for the child's size. Cushioned (加垫的) backs and shoulder straps (带子) will help them avoid pain.
However, the biggest problem for school backpacks is that they are too heavy, noted Hou Weiguang, a doctor in Chengdu. "In China, students have many textbooks and exercise books. The weight makes many kids suffer from side-bending (侧弯的) spines," Hou said. He suggests that a backpack should be no more than 15 percent of a child's body weight to avoid pain or injury. That means if a student weighs 50 kg, the backpack should be less than 7.5 kg.
Parents need to make sure their kids only carry what they need. Schools and governments need to help too, added Zheng Yongshun, an education official from Hong Kong. He said schools should offer locker (储物柜) space and shared books so kids can carry fewer books.

"What are the best ways to study at home?" Here are some of the best ideas for healthy study habits.
⒈Create an area for studying:
Where you study is important. You want enough room to spread out your books and notes. A table or desk works well. Be comfortable…but not too comfortable. Do not study on your bed, for example. You might fall asleep!
⒉:
Some people study better in silence. Others like to have a little noise, like soft music playing. Go with whatever helps you pay attention.
⒊Cut out the distractions(干扰)—and the social media(社交媒体):
Give yourself a break from social media. Put your phone away. All these things pull you away from what you are trying to learn. Tell the people you live with that you are studying and need time alone to work.
⒋Take breaks:
Treat yourself after reading something, working through a math problem, or completing some other tasks you set out to do. Get up, step away from your work and move your body.
⒌Eat so-called "brain foods" that are good for you:
Foods like nuts, yogurt and fish help your mind stay strong. Sugar may be delicious—especially chocolate, but too much sugar will give you an energy "crash(崩溃)". And, don't forget to drink plenty of water.
One more thing: Avoid bad thoughts like, "I'll never be ready for this test." Instead, tell yourself what you can do: "I can understand and remember this material!"
A. Go outside for a few minutes and get some fresh air. B. Cut out the noise. C. When you study, think good thoughts! D. It should be quiet, with good light to read by. E. And turn off the television. |
To improve your reading, you can try the form of readers' theatre, a formatted script for readers to read aloud. It's so interesting!
Cast of Characters: Narrator, Kayla, Ms. Lee, Zack
Narrator: On a sunny day in southern Texas, Ms. Lee's students gathered in the school playground.
Ms. Lee: Tomorrow is the day of the sidewalk (人行道) chalk-art festival. The principal has allowed us to practise our wet-chalk drawing on the playground sidewalk, which will be our studio, Remember, whenever you want to draw on a sidewalk, always ask an adult in charge for permission before you draw. Now let's review the steps of wet-chalk drawing. What do we do first?
Narrator: As the students told her the steps in order, Ms. Lee wrote them on a large pad of paper. When she finished writing, she pulled the paper off the pad and displayed the directions so everyone could read them. Then the students chose and soaked (浸湿) their pieces of chalk. Meanwhile, Kayla and Zack planned their drawing.
Kayla: Let's draw a jungle feast. Parrots can be eating all kinds of fruit.
Zack: I'll draw a model train carrying food to the birds.
Narrator: The students removed their pieces of chalk from the water and drew. As Zack drew a sweeping curve of train track, his hand knocked over the jar of water. He and Kayla watched water streak across their drawing.
Zack: Our drawing is ruined (毁坏)!
Kayla: Don't be so worried! Quick, mix the water and the chalk together! Now lets use more chalk and smear (涂抹) it around.
Narrator: Kayla and Zack worked quickly. The smeared colours looked glorious, like rich, thick frosting on a cake.
Ms. Lee: That looks great! That's a special method you're using, kids. Are you two interested in taking part in the chalk-art festival tomorrow? The timetable for the festival says that drawing starts at 9:00 a. m.
Kayla and Zack: Sure!
Kayla: Tomorrow we'11 pour water over our drawing on purpose.
Zack: Then we'll know just what to do!
I often hear some students (say) English is difficult, and it gives them a headache. So they can't learn it well. But English is very easy for me. I'm good at it. I'm very glad (tell) you something about how I study English.
First, I think an interest in English(be)very important. When I was in Grade One, we had a new subject-English. It was fresh for me. I was interested in it, so I worked hard at it. Soon we had an English exam and I (get)a very good mark. How happy I was! After that, I learned English harder and harder. And I also have a good habit: asking when ever I have a question I must make it clear by (ask)our English teacher.
Second, I think English is a foreign language. I should learn it well in the following ways: Listen to the teacher carefully, (speak)bravely, read aloud and have a good vocabulary. Then practice again and again never be tired. I think English (learn) well. Besides this, I often read English stories, jokes and easy novels. From these I know English is not only interesting, but also useful. They help me(understand) a lot of things. So to do more reading is an important way to learn English well.
And I also do some exercises from our class magazines, and I often write English diaries. English has become a close friend of mine.
Now I (learn) English for more than two years. I always keep the first position in our school. From these words, I hope every student ( learn) English well.
Ways to Cheer Someone up
Everybody gets sad from time to time. If you want to know how to cheer someone up, here are some easy steps to help you.
Those people aren't really looking for an answer. Most of the time they just want to be heard. Do you know why they're sad? Pull up a chair, offer a smile, and give them a shoulder to cry on.
After figuring out just what the problem is, take a little bit of time to think over how to deal with it. Let them know you have an idea of what they could do. If you don't, be honest to yourself and them. Take them to a person who has a better fix for the problem than you do.
Jokes and funny stories are always ice-breakers after you've talked about a problem for a long time. Don't be afraid to make fun of yourself. Talk about a time when you embarrassed yourself or did something stupid. Your friend will appreciate the humor. Can you remember the time when someone gave you a gift? How warm did you feel inside when it happened? In fact, the gesture of giving the gift is more important than the gift itself. It can brighten their whole day. The environment has a great influence on our feelings. If you need to get someone out of his or her sadness, get them out! Having a different set of environment will encourage new and better ways of thinking.
A. Make them laugh.
B. Give them a gift.
C. Listen to them.
D. Change their environment.
E.Show interests in what your friend did.
F. Give them advice if they ask for it.
