Some people think zoos are good places. The zoos give the animals the comfortable and safe living places. If the animals get hurt or ill, people will take care of them. The zoo is a good place to know the rules in the wild world. We can be much closer to the nature. We can know more about the animals in the zoos by watching, listening even smelling instead of just looking at the pictures in books.

Some people don't think animals feel happy in the zoos. Animals like pandas, wolves, bears usually live in the wild. They play and find food by themselves. They are strong and happy in the wild. If they are in the zoos, food is enough and rooms are comfortable. They do not need to worry about to find food to eat or places to stay in. They just walk around, sleep day and night, but they are not free at all.

I think we should build national parks as wild life nature reserves and encourage farmers to leave the reserves. If we do nothing to protect, animals will get fewer and fewer.

The United States is one of the greatest fruit—growing countries in the world. Fine red apples come from Washington and New York. Golden oranges come from Southern California and Florida. Fruit grows in all parts of America. The kind of fruit that is grown depends on the weather in each place.

Orange trees cannot be grown where temperatures drop below freezing. Southern California and Florida are far from each other, but their weather is much the same. They do not often have freezing temperatures.

In Washington, apple trees are planted near the Atlantic Ocean. In New York, they grow near the Great Lakes. Apple trees are often planted near water. Water temperature changes more slowly than land temperature. Near water, temperature does not drop so fast. There is less chance of frost（霜冻）in late spring or early autumn. Frost can kill apples.

America has many kinds of weather. It has many kinds of soil. Because of this, they grow and eat more fruit than any other country in the world.

The UN Environment Programme says that rising temperatures could mean the end for some migrating (迁徙) animals.

Migrating animals move through several environments as they travel away from the cold areas in winter to warmer ones. Birds may fly from one part of the world to another, perhaps stopping at feeding grounds on the way. Whales and turtles travel through huge areas of ocean. A report says that changes in any one of the places where these animals stay can cause serious problems. "Obviously these animals have developed their travelling ways over thousands of years. But weather change is much greater over the next 25 to 50 years and it is impossible for these animals to change their habits fast enough," said the report writer Dr. Robert Hepworth.

Turtles are hit hardest by rising temperatures. Scientists have found that at higher temperatures, turtles have far more female(雌性) eggs than male ones. In parts of Malaysia, turtles are only giving birth to female babies. And some turtles are more probable(可能的) to develop cancer as the waters get warmer.

With birds, the main problem is the harm to important areas at the end of their travels or at resting places along the way. About one-fifth of migrating birds are now in danger because of these changes including rising sea levels, land loss and more strong storms.

Some other animals are now in great danger. For example, the North Atlantic Right Whale (北大西洋露脊鲸)is losing their food because of the changing ocean flows(流动); the White-Nose Dolphin is out-competed (淘汰) by other kinds in warmer waters.

The report is not all bad news. Even with the temperature changing, protecting the environment can still help migrating animals return. "We need governments to start taking action all over the world. Bears'fur is very thick（厚的）and it can keep them warm. The biggest bear is the polar bear. They live in the snow and ice. You can hardly see polar bears in the snow because the colour of their body is similar（相似的）to that of the snow. The sun bear is the smallest bear, standing nearly 70 centimeters at the shoulder and weighing 25-65 kilograms. American black bears only live in North America. Their fur is usually black, but it is not always this colour.

Most bears usually sleep for the whole winter. Before they start to sleep, they eat a lot and become very fat. The mother bear has babies then. The babies are "blind" when they're born. Because they can't see anything, they have to do many things with the help of their mother.

Bears are much cleverer than most animals in the world. They know how to run away from a person and go food by themselves. You may see how clever they are when they ask for food from people at the zoo. They sit up and hold out their "hands" as people do.
