Kids' Health: Four Steps for Fighting Stress
Everybody gets stressed from time to time. Some ways of dealing with stress—like screaming or hitting someone—don't solve (解决) much. But other ways, like talking to someone you trust, can lead you to solving your problem or at least feeling better.
Try taking these four steps the next time you are stressed:
⑴Get support. When you need help, reach out to the people who care about you. Talk to a trusted adult, such as a parent or other relatives. They might have had similar problems, such as dealing with a test, or the death of a beloved pet.
⑵Don't take it out on yourself. Sometimes when kids are stressed and upset they take it out on themselves. Oh, dear, that's not a good idea. Remember that there are always people to help you. Don't take it out on yourself.
⑶Try to solve the problem. After you're calm and you have support from adults and friends, it's time to get down to business. Even if you can't solve it all, you can solve a piece of it.
⑷Be positive. Most stress is temporary(暂时的). Remember stress does go away, especially when you figure out the problem and start working on solving it.
These steps aren't magic, but they do work. And if you can stay positive as you make your way through a tough time, you'll help yourself feel better even faster.
A. Ask for a helping hand to get you through the tough situation.
B. Notice your friends' feelings and find a way to help them.
C. Different people feel stress in different ways.
D. Ah, it feels so good when the stress is gone.
E. You need to figure out what the problem is.
F. And don't forget about your friends.
G. Then, find a way to calm down.
Fifteen years spent in the field of education has left me with many treasured moments. One of the most unforgettable 1 when I was teaching second 2, 10 years ago.
In May I decided to plan something special for the children—a Mother's Day tea. We had put our heads together to 3 ideas of how to 4 our mothers. We practiced singing songs, memorized poems and wrote cards. We decided to hold our tea the Friday before Mother's Day. I was 5 to learn that every mother was planning to attend. I 6 invited my own mother.
Finally, the big day arrived. Each child7 up at our classroom door, expecting the arrival of his or her mom. 8 it got closer to starting time, I looked around and my eyes quickly found Jimmy. His mother hadn't shown up and he was looking 9.
I took my mother by the hand and walked over to Jimmy. "Jimmy," I said, "I have a bit of problem here and I was10 if you could keep my mother 11 while I'm busy."
My mom and Jimmy12 at a table. Jimmy served my mom her treats, gave her the gift I had made, just as we had 13 the day before. Whenever I looked over, my mother and Jimmy were in deep 14.
Now 10 years later, I work with students of all ages, educating them about the environment. Last year, I took a senior class on a field trip, and there was Jimmy. I had the students complete an outline of the day's 15 and an evaluation(评价)of our trip. Then I collected the students' booklets(小册子)and checked them to see if 16 was completed. When I came 17 Jimmy's page, he had written "Remember our Mother's Day tea we had in second grade, Mrs Marra? I do! Thanks for all you did for me, and thank your mother, too. "
I told him I really enjoyed what he had written. He looked rather embarrassed and walked 18. Suddenly he ran back and gave me a big hug. "Thanks again. No one even knew my mother didn't 19 it. "
I ended my workday with a hug from a teenage boy who had20 stopped hugging teachers years ago.
A young man and an old man were waiting for a bus. They (sit) next to each other. "What's that in your bag?" asked the young man, (point) to a big bag beside the old man.
"Gold. There was nothing but gold, "answered the old man. The young man could not believe his own ears and was in great(surprising). Then he began to think about how to get the gold. The old man was very tired and it seemed that he could hardly keep his eyes open. After a while the old man (lie) down on the chair and fell asleep.
The young man took the big bag gently and (quiet). But when he was just about to run away, he found a corner of his fur coat was under the old man's body. Several times he tried to pull it out, in vain. At last he took off his coat, thinking that the gold in the bag must cost far more than his fur coat.
Worried but (delight), the young man ran out of the station as quickly as his legs could carry him, until he reached a place he thought the old man couldn't find him. He stopped and quickly opened the bag but he just found a great many small stones it. Then he ran back to the station (hurry) only to find that the old man was gone.
During my second year at the city college, I was told that the education department was offering a "free" course, called Thinking Chess, for three credits. I 1 the idea of taking the class because, after all, who doesn't want to2a few dollars？More than that, I'd always wanted to learn chess. And, even if I weren't 3 enough about free credits, news about our 4 was appealing enough to me. He was an international grandmaster, which 5 I would be learning from one of the game's 6. I could hardly wait to 7 him.
Maurice Ashley was kind and smart, a former graduate returning to teach, and this 8 was no game for him；he meant business. In his introduction, he made it 9 that our credits would be hardearned. In order to 10 the class, among other criteria, we had to write a paper on how we plan to 11what we would learn in class to our future professions and, 12, to our lives. I managed to get an A in that 13 and learned life lessons that have served me well beyond the 14.
Ten years after my chess class with Ashley, I'm still putting to use what he 15 me："The absolute most important 16that you learn when you play chess is how to make good 17. These words still ring true today in my 20 as a journalist.
