Lei Feng Spirit Carrying on

    On December 18, 1940, Lei Feng was born in a poor peasant family in a little mountain village of Hunan Province. He didn't go to school till 1950. At the age of 18, he worked as a steel worker. He was often praised for his good job. On January 8, 1960, he joined the army. In the same year, he joined the Communist Party. He loved the Party and the people, and constantly did good for others. “It's my duty，” Lei Feng always said when he was thanked by those. He became a model soldier one year later. Lei died in an accident in 1962.

    After his death, Chairman Mao called on the people to “Learn from Comrade Lei Feng”. And 5 March has become the official “Learn from Lei Feng Day” since 1963. People got to know more about him after LeiFeng'sDiary was first presented to the public. Now the term “Living Lei Feng”has become a noun for anyone who is selfless, anyone who has deep love for his country, anyone who works hard, or anyone who is always ready to help others...

    The whole nation are moved by Lei Feng's deeds. And Lei Feng's spirit will live in our heart forever and we surely will practice his spirit in life as he did.

    I am walking through the winter park where the trees stand cold and bare (光秃秃的). The yellow leaves have fallen to the ground. Now, a group of women gather at the sides of a path. In the cold winter, they're moving their arms and legs to a rhythm (节奏). They are, of course, the dancing aunties.

    It seems that if you go to any public space around China, you're likely to see these dancing aunties. When I first came to China, it was one of the first things that annoyed me. That's because in Britain dancing in public is not a cultural habit. You won't see any age group swinging their arms and tapping their feet in a park. Usually, they just take a walk for exercise.

    Now and again the dancing aunties have hit the headlines (头条新闻). Some people find them annoying. But others respect their right to dance in public. Most of them are middle-aged. They finally have some free time to do whatever they like. There is no more work, and their kids have left.

    All in all, I like seeing these women enjoying themselves. They remind us of the importance of exercise as we get older. Besides, most of them have raised the whole families. Now it is their time to have fun and enjoy some peace.

Many of us reach news every day is probably because we'd like to know what's happening in the world. Today we can get news from TV or the Internet, but how did ancient people get news?

At the very beginning, information spread by word of mouth. People living in tribes (部落), got news from neighbors or travelers. Ancient Romans changed the way people knew about their communities. They posted a list of daily happenings at public squares in the cities. Ancient Chinese people did it in another way. The government had news sheets sent to officials in the whole country so people could know what was going on in the capital.

The fifteenth century saw big progress in printing technology in the west. The progress brought a sudden rise of news business. Printers sold whatever people loved to read. In the sixteenth century, the first real newspaper appeared. People started to form the habit of reading newspapers. They liked to share their opinions on newspapers. The invention of telegraph（电报）machines led to another big step in history. News stories were sent to the papers in minutes instead of weeks.

 Now we get news in seconds from all over the world. We can become some kind of reporters by posting online what happens around us.
