中考英语试题

Keeping a ________( 日记 ) is a good way to improve our writing skills.

Governments around the world are pushing for an end to plastic straws ( 吸管 ) and bags. More and more businesses are turning to paper products as a choice. Paper is considered by many to be better than plastic. However, it, too, is harmful to the environment.

Firstly, paper bags and straws are made from trees. Trees, as you know, can reduce ( 减少 ) carbon dioxide ( 二氧化碳 ) levels in the atmosphere. They can slow down climate ( 气候 ) change. An increase in the use of paper bags can cause more acts of cutting down trees.

Secondly, products made from paper require more energy and water. About 10 percent more energy and four times as much water is used to produce a paper bag than a plastic one. You might say that we can use recycled paper to save that energy and water. This seems to be a good idea. However, it takes even more energy and water to go through the recycling process than to make a brand new paper bag. Products made from recycled paper are also often short-lived.

Thirdly, paper products are heavier than plastic ones. That means they require more oil to transport. Seven trucks are needed to transport two million paper bags, while only one truck is needed to transport the same number of plastic bags. The increased weight also leads to a large amount of waste once the bags are thrown away.

Paper products are actually a lose-lose for both the environment and businesses. They are more expensive than plastic products. A paper straw costs about 5 to 12 cents, while a plastic one usually costs only about 2 cents.

The most environment-friendly solution is to avoid single-use products altogether. Products like glass water bottles and steel straws can be used over and over again. They are much better than either paper products or plastic products. Through increasing the use of these products, you can greatly reduce your throwaway waste and truly make our Earth a greener place!

1 What does the underlined word “ They ” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A Plastic products. B Trees. C Paper products. D Businesses.

2 Compared with transporting two million plastic bags, transporting two million paper bags requires ________.

A fewer trucks B six more trucks C twice as many trucks D the same number of trucks

3 The writer compared the price of a paper straw and that of a plastic straw to show that ________.

A paper products are not a good choice for businesses

B it is difficult for all businesses to turn to paper products

C most people believe paper products are better than plastic ones

D paper products are as harmful to the environment as plastic ones

4 By writing this article, the writer mainly wanted to ________.

① compare plastic products with paper ones

② correct people’s wrong ideas about paper products

③ suggest people use reusable products like steel straws

④ list the advantages and disadvantages of using paper products

A ①② B ③④ C ①④ D ②③

If you walk through a park in the morning or in the evening, you might see a lot of people doing these slow and beautiful movements— Carry the tiger over the mountain and White crane spreads its wings . In fact, they are doing Taichi .

Taichi is an ancient martial art ( 武术 ). It is a common kind of exercise in China. More than 100 million people in over 150 countries practice Taichi at present. Recently UNESCO ( 联合国教科文组织 ) has added Taichi to its Intangible Cultural Heritage List ( 非物质文化遗产名录 ). Many taichi fans were happy to hear of it. “This will make taichi more popular around the world. Hopefully, more people will become healthier by practicing it.” said Chen Bin. He is a Taichi master from the village of Chenjiagou, Henan Province. This village is the birthplace of Chen-style Taichi.

It’s true that doing Taichi is good for our health. It can make us walk and move more freely, and it can also make us stronger. During slow movements, we can focus on ( 专注 ) our hands and feet. We can control them better. Slow movements also help us to take deep and long breaths.

Taichi also focuses on the harmony ( 和谐 ) between yin ( ) and yang ( ). It shows how the ancient Chinese people saw the world. The world is full of yin and yang: dark and light, soft and hard, female and male. But they don’t oppose ( 对立 ) each other absolutely ( 绝对地 ). As we see in the picture, a white spot is in the black area and a black spot is in the white area. After a dark night, the sun will rise. Leaves fall in autumn but grow in spring. Everything keeps changing — that is how we should see the world.

Taichi carries traditional Chinese philosophy ( 哲学 ), such as being in harmony with nature and using softness to beat hardness. It has become a symbol of Chinese culture.

1 How many people practice Taichi in the world now?

A About 10 million. B Less than 150 thousand.

C At most 100 thousand. D More than 100 million.

2 Which of the following words can best describe the movements of Taichi?

A Slow and beautiful. B Slow and exciting. C Fast and free. D Strong and tiring.

3 Why has Taichi been added to Intangible Cultural Heritage List recently?

A Because it is a symbol of Chinese culture. B Because it is from the village of Chenjiagou.

C Because it can make us walk more freely. D Because it can use softness to beat hardness.

4 What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?

A To ask people to do Taichi in their fiee time.

B To introduce an ancient martial art—taichi.

C To teach people how to do Taichi correctly.

D To explain why Taichi is good for our health.

There are many ways to help improve your health like eating healthy food. Taking exercise and getting medical help. But the easiest and cheapest way to improve your health is just to sleep eight hours or more every night. The general sleeping rule is that the younger you are, the longer sleep you need. But regardless of(不管)age, some people need to sleep more while for some a few hours is enough.

The problem with sleep is that more and more people in the world are not sleeping enough. According to the World Health Organization over half the people in the world may be sleep-deprived. Having less sleep not only makes people feel tired but also causes accidents. In the United States alone, sleepy drivers cause at least 100,000 traffic accidents a year. Also sleep problems can cause medical problems such as high blood pressure(血压).

Why are so many people sleep-deprived? Part of the reasons may be cultural. In the American culture, people put a higher value on work than on sleep. In fact, peopele who sleep a lot are usuallv seen as lazy. Also, you can sometimes hear some people say proudly that they don’t have much time to sleep. they only sleep four or five hours a night. It seems that the less you sleep, the more work you’ll do.

How do we teach these people to learn the value of sleep? Perhaps they may listen to the advice of Dr. James Maas an expert (专家) in sleep. He says , Sleep is like a credit (信用卡) card. When you sleep less. you are only borrowing time. You always have to pay it back. The morehours you don’t sleep, the more hours you should t sleep to ‘pay back’ the hours on your ‘sleepcredit card.’

For those who value work more than sleep, they should listen to what a famous person once said. Don’t think you will be doing less work because you sleep during the night. That is a foolish(愚蠢的) idea which is held by people who have no imagination. You will be able to do more.
