The first astronauts

Since the earliest times, people have looked up at the stars, the moon and the planets. Today people use modern machines    16    at the sky. This is very different from the situation    17    years ago when people could only use their eyes. Perhaps they dreamed of    18    the universe.

When did humans first go into space? The story began not so very long ago,    19    the first astronauts were not people-they were animals.

Scientists wanted to make travelling to space as    20    as possible for humans. So they decided to experiment with animals and test    21   in spaceflights. Insects, mice, frogs, dogs and monkeys were some of the animals    22    first went into space. Many of them    23   , but they helped to make space travel safer for humans. For their great service, we    24    forget these animals.

Albert Ⅱ was the first monkey to go into space in 1949. Sadly he died    25    his spaceship landed back on Earth.

26    the result was different for Ham the Monkey. His story ended happily when he returned to earth    27    very good health.

Scientists wanted to know the answer to the important question: could    28    animal like Ham do the same things in space as he could do on Earth? The answer came when Ham    29    into space in 1961. Yes, he did everything well and lived for    30    16 years

As more and more children become obese(肥胖的),schools in the US are trying to encourage students to become more active and make healthier food choices. In Dillwyn, Viginia, the educators built an “active” green school to deal with student obesity.

The school appears to be just like any other beautiful school. However, if you look closer, you will notice that the students are always moving. In the classrooms, students are wriggling(扭动) on the seats. During breaks, you’ll find students rushing out for a 10-minute physical activity break.

But physical activity alone is not enough; food intake(摄取量) is also important. The school has an open kitchen. It allows students to watch the food as it is being prepared and make healthier choices. A teaching kitchen allows kids to experiment(做实验) with different recipes(食谱). And a working laboratory allows them to do food science experiments. There is also a school garden where students and even family members can grow vegetables together.

So is the “active” green school working? The results are not out yet, but parents and teachers think that the kids seems to be a lot happier.

We did a survey about unpaid work among 300,000 married couples in our city. One third of them have no children, another third have one or two and the last third have three or more. The unpaid work includes childcare and housework. The diagram (图表) on the right shows the result of the survey.

正确的涂 A ,错误的涂 B

1 According to the diagram, “more children” means “less unpaid work” for husbands.

2 We can infer unpaid work done by wives with over 3 children will rise to over 50 hours a week.

3 The survey shows childcare usually falls on wives.

4 The diagram may explain why some wives want more children.

5 The survey is based on family life.

Mary was waiting for the airplane to take off. She got a seat by herself. Just then, an air hostess came up to her and asked, “Could you please change your seat? A man would like to sit with his wife.” Mary felt unhappy because the only seat was next to a girl with her arms broken, a black-and-blue face, and a sad expression. “I don’t want to sit there,” Mary thought immediately. But the air hostess said, “The girl needs help.” Finally, Mary moved to that seat.

The girl was named Emily. She was hurt in a car accident and now was on her way for treatment. When the snacks and juice arrived, Mary realized that Emily could not feed herself. Mary considered offering to feed her but hesitated ( 犹豫的 ), as it seemed too impolite to offer a service to a stranger. But then Mary realized that Emily’s need was more important.

Mary offered to help her eat. Although Emily was uncomfortable to accept, she agreed. They became closer and closer in a short time. Mary was very glad that she had sat next to Emily and fed her. After the five-hour trip, Mary’s heart was warm, and she had a pleasant time.

Love always goes around us. We should help people in need, and our world will become more and more wonderful.

Answer the questions according to the passage.

1 How did Mary feel at first when an air hostess asked her to change her seat?

2 What happened to Emily?

3 What did Mary do for Emily when the food arrived?

4 Did Mary realize that Emily’s need was more important?

5 What can we learn from the passage?

Do you often use plastic straws ( 塑料吸管 )? You probably use them to drink lots of things, such as soybean milk, cola or milk tea. Plastic straws are small 1 they are a big problem. They are made in 10 minutes, used in 20 2 and normally remain on the earth for over 100 years since they are hard to be 3 .

But how do plastic straws get into the ocean? Through human mistakes, they are often thrown away everywhere and all gutters ( 排水沟 ) in some areas lead to our ocean. 4 , plastic straws kill ocean life. Once a 5 was found bleeding because a 12-centimeter-long plastic straw was pushed into 6 nose. How terrible!

In fact, around 500 million plastic straws are used every day in the US alone. If we didn't act now, there would be more plastic in the ocean than fish by 2050.

Luckily, more and more people around the world have realized this problem. They begin to think about 7 plastic straws are necessary or not when drinking drinks.

So what can we do right now to reduce plastic pollution? The simplest way is to say “ 8 ” to single-use plastic, like straws. For example, next time if you go to a restaurant, make sure you order your drink without a straw. There are reusable straws instead.

Coffee house chain Starbucks has started to 9 strawless cups and paper straws instead of plastic straws in almost 1, 000 stores in Shanghai and Shenzhen. And McDonald’s has 10 taken action to reduce the use of the plastic straws. It is hoped that more businesses and customers will work together to protect our environment.

You might have seen beautiful rainbows in the sky before. They form when sunlight falls on water drops in the air. But in fact, moonlight can also create rainbows in the same way. They are called “moonbows”. They are similar to rainbows, but they are created by moonlight instead of direct sunlight.

Moonbows are rarer than rainbows. Different weather and astronomical (天文学的) conditions have to be just right for moonbows to be created.

The moon has to be very low in the sky-only 42 degrees from the horizon (地平线) . The moon period has to be a full moon or nearly full. The sky must be very dark for a moonbow to be watched clearly-any bright light can obscure it. Water drops must appear in the air in the opposite direction of the moon.

Moonbows appear on the opposite side of the moon and usually look white to the human eye. This is because their colors are not bright enough to be noticed by the human eye. It is possible, however, to view the colors in a moonbow using long exposure (长时间曝光) photography.

Moonbows more often appear in some locations around the world. Most of these locations usually have waterfalls, which create thin fog in the air. Some of these locations are the Yosemite National Park in California and Cumberland Falls State Resort Park in Kentucky, US; Victoria Falls on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe; and Waimea in Hawaii, US.

Moonbows do really happen. So at a certain time and a certain place, when a moonbow happens to appear, you can’t miss it if you’re right there.

22 According to the first two paragraphs, moonbows are ________.

A created by sunlight B much easier to find

C seen during the day D more difficult to form

23 Which of the following can be the conditions for a moonbow to form?

A A half moon hangs high in the bright sky.

B A full moon is 50 degrees from the horizon.

C A nearly full moon hangs low in the dark sky.

D Water drops are in the opposite direction of the sun.

24 What does the underlined word “ obscure ” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

A cover B drop C connect D produce

25 What is paragraph 5 mainly about?

A Conditions of moonbows. B Background of moonbows.

C Locations of moonbows. D Development of moonbows.

As teenagers, you have many dreams. These dreams can be very big, such as winning the Nobel Prize, or they can be small. You may just want to become one of the ten best students in your class.

Once you find a dream, what to you do with it? Do you ever make your dream true?

Follow How Heart by Australian writer Andrews tells us that making our dreams true is life’s biggest challenge ( 挑战 ).

In fact, everyone can make his dream come true. The first thing you must do is to remember what your dream is.

Don’t let it leave your heart. Keep telling yourself what you want. Do this step by step and your dream will come true faster because a big dream is, in fact, many small dreams.

You must also never give up your dream.

There will be difficulties on the road to your dreams. But the biggest difficulty comes from yourself. You may think you’re not very good at some school subjects, or it is impossible for you to become a writer. These kinds of thoughts stop you from getting your dream, the book says

You need to decide what is the most important. Studying instead of watching TV will lead to better exam results, while saving five yuan instead of buying an ice cream means you can buy anew book. As you get closer to your dream, it may change a little. This is good as you have the chance to learn more skills and find new interests.
