John is a famous writer now. But he said that he was not a1 student when he was young. He was often late for 2 and didn't like doing his homework. Sometimes, he slept in class while the teacher was teaching. He didn't understand(理解)much, 3 he always thought he understood everything. One day the teacher 4 the students a question, “When Jack was ten years old, 5 brother Bob was twenty. Jack is fifteen now and 6 is his brother Bob?” John said, “That's easy. Bob is twice as old as Jack, so he is now thirty.
Another time, the7 in a science class asked, "when it thunders 8 do we always see the light before we 9the sound?”
“But, Miss,” said John quickly,” don't you 10 our eyes are in front of our ears?”
Sam hated doing chores. And he had many chores. For example, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays he took out the rubbish. And on weekends he always washed his father's car. He also cleaned his own room once a week. What a chore that was! Sometimes he even had to ⑴look after his little sister and brother.
Sam had a foreign friend at school. His name was Kumar. Doing chores in Kumar's family was very different. In the house only the girls did chores. His sisters made the bed and cleaned all the rooms too, even his bedroom. His mother always cooked the meals, and his sisters helped her to go shopping, and prepare (准备) the food. They worked hard at home, doing all the chores with their mother. So when Kumar talked to his friend Sam about chores, he felt very lucky. One day, Sam had an idea.
He wanted Kumar's sisters to help him clean his room, but ⑵they said "no". Instead (相反) , they asked Sam to teach their brother how to do chores, so he could make his own bed.
Sam and Kumar are very good at science. They are going to be scientists after university. They want to make a robot to do the chores. Then everyone—mothers and fathers, sons and daughters-will be happy!
What's your idea about success? Some people say that beginners have all the luck, while others believe that success 1 only with practice. In fact, I feel both of these statements (陈述) are not true all the time. Each is true in some ways 2 not in others.
For example, I went to a drawing competition many years ago and 3 surprisingly. As a prize, I got a film ticket to see Titanic. I was really 4 because it was the first time I had taken part in any competition. Thinking that I might be lucky again, I 5 joining in other art competitions. But the result was that I 6 won again. I accepted the fact that the other people had a 7artistic ability than I did. Art was not something I was especially interested in and I had never practiced the different art skills. So, the8 I produced were not of avery high standard.
These experiences taught me a lot. Though I might have been lucky 9, I also need to put in hard work. As we know, 10 makes perfect, so I believe success builds on less luck and chance.
North American black bears are shy animals. They are fearful by nature, and will usually run away if they see or hear people. Because of this, it can be difficult for scientists to learn about these animals.
In order to study black bears, researchers from New Jersey, the US, catch bears and use drugs to help them go to sleep. Researchers then work out the size and the weight of the bears, take blood, to test for diseases, remove a tooth and take it to the lab to find out its age. From these studies, researchers want to find out how many bears live in New Jersey, how long they live, and how many babies they produce.
But in Minnesota, the US, researchers study bears that are completely awake. The bears know the researchers' voices and they are not afraid of the research team. With the help of a few grapes to keep the bears busy, researchers can touch them to check their hearts, look at their teeth, and do other jobs. Researchers can also walk or sit with bears for hours and make videos to learn about their everyday lives."
In both places, the main purpose is the same—to make sure there is a healthy population of black bears. But the research methods and the kinds of information that researchers are able to collect are quite different.

What's going to happen in the future? Will robots control our planet? Will computers become smarter than us? Not likely. But here are some things that scientists say are most likely to happen in 10 to 30 years from now, according to the BBC.
Digital money
We used to pay with cash for everything we bought. Now when we use a credit card(信用卡) to shop online, money is spent without us seeing it. That means we are already using digital money. Using a card is much easier than searching our pockets for change. It is also safer than carrying a lot of cash.
When ATM cards were first introduced, they were not accepted everywhere. But now it's hard to live without them. It's reported that Sweden will first completely stopped using cash, and the US might be next.
Bionic(仿生的) eyes
It's no longer something only in a science fiction movie. People who are blind may have a chance to get their sight back—by wearing bionic eyes.
A blind eye can no longer sense light, but a bionic eye can use a camera to "see" the environment and send data (数据) to the mind. Now the bionic eyes only allow patients to see lights and unclear shapes.
Self-driving cars
Unlike a human driver, a self-driving car won't get distracted(分神) by phone call, the radio or something outside the window. Sensors(传感器) and cameras on the car would allow it to reduce me number of road accidents. You could even take a nap while the car drives itself. In the future, driverless cars would be widely accepted.

Many people think that the dinosaurs(恐龙) were the biggest animals that ever lived. They are wrong. The world's biggest animal is still living, and it lives in the sea. It is called the Blue Whale, Blue Whales can be as long as 30 meters weigh as much as 1,000 kilos. The largest dinosaurs (weigh) only 500 kilos.
The whale is not only the world's biggest animal, it is also one of the (clever). We know that whales can communicate with one (other), although we do not know what they are saying. One day perhaps we will learn to talk to whales, and then they will be able to tell us about (they).
There are lots of stories whales, and maybe the most famous one is called Moby Dick, which was (write) by the American writer, Herman Melville. In this story, a sailor ——Captain Ahab spends a lot of time trying to find and kill very big white whale named Moby Dick. (Sad), there are not many kinds of whales left. People have killed them for (thousand) of years for food and other things. However, there are now laws(法律) to stop people killing most kinds of whales, so perhaps there will be more of them in the years to come.
