Last summer, Oliver had a two-week holiday in Australia. He was in a group of children coming from different parts of the world, and they had a great time together.
From Brisbane, in Queensland, they went to a beautiful island off the coast of Australia. It is not far from the famous and crowded Frazer Island. Oliver's group stayed in a hotel on the beach on the island, so they could try snorkeling (用通气管潜泳) in the light green water. At night, they went into the water to feed wild dolphins.
After a few days on the island, they went into the inland areas. There Oliver met some famous animals in Australia like kangaroos! During their three days there, they rode horses. Oliver threw a boomerang (回旋镖), too. They cooked their food over a campfire at night, under the stars.
Then they went northwards to the Coral Sea to visit the Great Barrier Reef. This over 2,000-kilometre line of coral (珊瑚) is a magical place. They spent three wonderful days there, swimming in the coolest sea!
Their trip finished in Sydney, a nice city. Oliver really enjoyed his holiday.

In modern China, people's lives are becoming better and better. Many people don't stay at home during their vacation (假期). They want to go out to see something different or do something interesting. So people living in the countryside (乡村) come to cities and people from cities go to the countryside for vacation. During the vacation, trains, buses and planes are all very busy. It is very hard to buy train or plane tickets. So many people take buses or drive cars to travel.
Like many people, my family love nature (大自然). We like spending time in the beautiful countryside. But not all vacations in the countryside are nice. It is Saturday. My father drives us to the countryside for vacation. There are too many cars on the street, so we have to move very slowly. It takes us about an hour to get out of the city. Then after fifty minutes' drive, we come to a hill. Not far from it, there is a lake. The water is very clean. And there are many people fishing. It is a good place to have a picnic. We take the food, fruit and drink out of the car. We sit down under a big tree on the hill and begin to eat. Before we finish eating, it suddenly starts to rain hard. We have to run back to our car. Then we drive back home. What a bad vacation!

A tsunami is a huge ocean wave (浪). An earthquake usually causes a tsunami. The biggest tsunami ever hit land on July 9, 1958. It happened when an earthquake shook the undersea floor. The 8.0 earthquake shook 40 million cubic yards (立方码) of rocks and ice from a mountain. The landslide (滑坡) fell 3,000 feet and hit the water with terrible force. It caused the huge tsunami wave. The wave was more than 1,640 feet (500 meters) high and hit over five square miles of land. It also destroyed millions of trees.
There were no towns in the area, so it is different from the terrible tsunami of 2004. More than 200,000 people lost their lives in 2004. ▲ . These two unlucky people were on a fishing boat in the bay when the wave arrived. Another boat was carrying Peter and his wife. They jumped into a small boat and some people saved them a few hours later. Jack and his seven-year-old son were on the third boat. Luckily, both of them didn't die.
For many years, scientists discussed about the reasons of tsunami in 1958. Some scientists said lots of rocks fell into the bay, but it was not enough to cause such a huge wave. They thought that the earthquake itself caused the wave. However, as our understanding of earthquakes and tsunamis improved, most scientists now regard the landslide as the true reason for the wave. But no one argues that the wave was the largest in the world and will keep a long time in the future.
