 NASA-s New Horizons probe(宇宙探测器)flew by Pluto(冥王星)this morning,

sending back history's first up-close looks at the vast freezing-cold world.  Closest

approach came at 7:49 a.m.  EDT.  To celebrate, NASA gave out the latest photo of

Pluto. It showed a reddish world with an amazing heart-shaped feature on its surface.

After today's close encounter, all the nine solar system's traditionally recognized

planets have now been visited by a spaceship-a huge project begun in 1962 when NASA's

Mariner 2  probe flew past Venus,  a  planet  in  the solar system.  More than  l,200

scientists, NASA guests and important persons, including 200 reporters, watched the

flyby live at New Horizons'  mission control center.

That close encounter has been a long time coming. The$723 million New Horizons

mission launched in January 2006 but began taking shape in 1989.  "New Horizons is'a

capstone mission'," Glen Fountain, mission project manager told Space, com. "It is the

first completion of the observations of our solar system. It-s giving us a new idea about

how we human beings fit into the universe."

New Horizons "faced a crazy number of challenges," Stern, a driving force behind

New Horizons said, "So many people stuck with this for so long. They got knocked

down; they stood up.  They got knocked down again; they stood up again.”

In a coincidence, today's close approach falls on the 50th anniversary of the first flyby

of Mars, another planet, which was completed by NASA-s Mariner 4 spaceship.

There are no longer nine officially recognized planets, of course. The International

Astronomical Union regarded Pluto as “a dwarf planet" in 2006 in a decision that remains

controversial(有争议的)today.

Parents with young ones need to be careful of the Internet activities of their children.    36    But they might not have considered how they’re going to ensure (确保) kids’ safety online. Here are a number of tips to help protect kids’ safety online.

37    A good understanding of technologies such as QQ, e-mail, text messaging, forums (论坛), chat rooms, and social networking sites will all be important for ensuring kids’ safety online.

38    For example, in the beginning you may insist that the Internet only be used while the child is accompanied (陪伴) a parent. This would be useful for guiding your children through their “first-time” experiences on the web and making sure that they develop good online habits.

Keep the computer in a central place to ensure that your kids’ online behavior is being watched. You don’t need to stand over them, but just knowing that you are there will make them less likely to search the web for negative information.    39

It will be difficult to keep a close watch on what your children are doing online at all times.    40    This will help ensure kids’ safety online. Your Internet security software should include secret passwords, website history, and some methods of taking screen pictures at regular times. It would also be useful to let software be able to watch your child’s behavior on social networking sites.

A. Create a list of acceptable computer behavior.

B. So it’s suitable to set up an Internet control software program.

C. Use your computer safely when you connect it to the Internet.

D. Improve your computer skills if you are not familiar with the Internet.

E. Many parents have children just old enough to start surfing the Internet.

F. This will help protect your kids from negative online information.

G. The Internet also makes it easier to search and apply for jobs and business chances.

It is sad but true that people die in earthquakes   61   falling furniture and bricks. Earthquake   62     (safe) is very important and there is more to it    63    just keeping buildings from falling down. So if your home is in an earthquake area, you should prepare carefully before the earthquake    64     (come).

First, make sure you buy a house which is earthquake safe. All pipes should be fixed to the walls and all walls should be   65   (especial) thick and strong. Make sure the building has no 66   (break) windows and is well repaired.

Second, look at the objects in your house. Objects    67    computers, televisions and lamps can be tied to tables or    68    (stick) to them so they won’t easily move around. The cupboards,   69    many small things are stored, should have strong doors. Always remember,   70     (good) safe than sorry.

Punctuality (守时) is a good habit and is of great importance to a person. A punctual person is in the habit of doing everything at the proper time and is never late in keeping an appointment. The unpunctual man, on the other hand, never does what he has to do at the proper time.   36   .

There is a proverb that says “Time flies never to be recalled”. This is very true.   37   Time is more valuable than material things. In fact time is life itself, and the unpunctual man is forever wasting and mismanaging his own valuable asset as well as others’. The unpunctual man is always complaining that he finds no time to answer letters, or to return calls, or to keep appointments promptly.    38    He knows that he can get through his huge amount of work only if he faithfully keeps every appointment promptly and deals with every piece of work when it has to be attended to.

39    If a person is invited to a dinner and arrives later than expected, he keeps all the other guests and the host waiting for him alone. This is great disrespect.

Unpunctuality is very harmful when it comes to doing one’s duty. Imagine how it would be if those who are entrusted with important tasks failed to be at their proper place at the appointed time.   40   .

A. A lost thing may be found again, but lost time can never be regained.

B. People who are punctual are always welcome.

C. Failure to be punctual is a sign of disrespect towards others.
D. He is always in a hurry and in the end loses both time and his good name.

E. They will never be trusted by their friends or fellow men again.

In Glasgow, Scotland, a young lady, like a lot of teens today, got tired of home. The daughter objected to her family’s   1   lifestyle and said, “I don’t want your God. I am leaving!”

She left home. Before long, she was disappointed and unable to find a job, so she took to the streets to do everything she could to   2  . Many years passed by, her father died, her mother grew   3  , and the daughter became more and more entrenched (固执)in her way of life.

No contact was made between mother and daughter during these years. The mother, having   4   her daughter’s whereabouts, went to the poor part of the city in   5   of her daughter. She stopped at each of the rescue missions (收容所)with a simple   6  . “Would you allow me to   7   this picture?” It was a picture of the smiling, gray-haired mother with a handwritten   8   at the bottom: “I love you still … come home!”

One day the daughter wandered into a rescue mission for a hot meal. She sat   9   listening to the service, all the while letting her   10   wander over to the bulletin board. There she saw the picture and thought, could that be my mother?

She couldn’t   11   until the service was over. She stood and went to look. It was her mother, and there were those words, “I love you still … come home!”  12   she stood in front of the picture, she wept. It was too   13   to be true.

It was night, but she was so   14   by the message that she started walking home.  15   the time she arrived it was early in the morning. She was afraid and   16   her way timidly (胆怯地). As she knocked, the door   17   open on its own. She thought someone must have broken into the house. Concerned for her mother’s   18  , the young woman ran to the bedroom and shook her mother awake and said, “It’s me! It’s me! I’m home!”

The mother couldn’t believe her eyes. They fell into each other’s arms. The daughter said, “I was so worried and   19   someone had broken in.” The mother replied gently, “No, dear. From the day you left, that door has never been   20  .”

I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard my name calling. I was chosen to play the leading role in the play, that was my dream. As a shy and thin girl, I used to be quite afraid of speaking in the public. But my parents and teachers always encourage me to do so. Now I have changed great. In class, I am often the first one to stand up and answer questions even if I may take some mistakes. No pains, no gains. Now I am always brave enough overcome the difficulty in my heart and have changed in a lively girl. So my experience shows that we should not be afraid of losing face but only in this way can we make progresses.

Only the wealthy and the upper-class people can afford to live in ___49___ centers now. But these people don’t go to bars and clubs to socialize. Instead, they consider fun-seekers who wander in their neighborhoods annoying. They also worry that bars and clubs will make their neighborhoods less ___50___ and devalue their housing property.

For thousands of years, people thought of glass as something beautiful to look at. Only recently have they come to think of it as something to look through. Stores display their goods in large glass windows. Glass bottles and jars that hold food and drink allow us to see the contents. Glass is used to make eyeglasses, microscopes, telescopes, and many other extremely useful and necessary objects.

Until the Second World War, most of the glass used for optical(光学的) instruments was imported from Europe. However, during the war Americans could not get European glass, and they were forced to make their own. Therefore, new kinds of glasses were developed that had been previously unknown. These new effects were achieved by mixing other chemical elements with the sand. Some of these new glasses are very strong and can resist many kinds of shocks. Legend has it that a very hard glass was invented by a Roman who showed his discovery to the Emperor. When the Emperor saw the glass he feared that it would become more valuable than gold and sliver, making his treasure worthless. Therefore, he had the glassmaker killed, and the secret was not discovered again for hundreds of years.

In the present century, safety glass was invented for use in modern cars and planes. Safety glass is made by placing a layer of plastic between two layers of plate glass. When the outside layer of glass is broken, the pieces do not scatter(散开) and injure people. Some glass of the type is strong enough to resist bullets(子弹).

Although nowadays plastics have replaced glass under conditions where glass might be easily broken, there are new uses being developed, for the greatest advantage of glass is that its component(组成的) parts are inexpensive and can be found all over the world.

28.As time goes by, glass _________.

A. is regarded as transparent(透明的)

B. is used to make things look pleasant

C. is seen as more than decoration

   D. is widely used to replace steel in making containers

29.Why did Americans make their own glass during the Second World War?

   A. The war blocked the way of glass import.

B. The glass made in Europe was out of date.

C. They refused to use the European glass.

D. They were able to make a new kind of glass.

30.Why does the author tell us the legend?

   A. To prove the Roman was the first inventor of hard glass.

B. To support the Americans were as clever as the Romans.

C. To give some information about hard glass.

D. To provide a historical event concerned with hard glass.

31.Why are new uses of glass being developed?

   A. Because glass is not as safe as plastics.

   B. Because glass is cheap and easily obtainable.

C. Because glass is not as strong and durable as plastics.

   D. Because glass is more and more widely used.
