Last year my summer holiday was spoiled by my bringing along a modern convenience that was too convenient for my own good: the iPad. Instead of looking at nature, I checked my e-mail. Instead of paddling a small boat, I followed my Twitter feed(推特简讯). Instead of reading great novels, I stuck to reading four newspapers each morning. I was behaving as if I were still in the office. My body was on vacation, but my head wasn’t.

So this year I made up my mind to try something different: withdrawal from the Internet. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, since I’m bad at self-control.  But I was determined.  I started by giving the iPad to my wife.

The cellphone signal at our house was worse than in the past, making my attempts at cheating an experience in frustration (沮丧). I was trapped, forced to go through with my plan. Largely breaking away from e-mail, Twitter and my favorite newspaper websites, I had few ways to connect to the world except for the radio—and how much radio can one listen to, really? I had to do what I had planned to do all along: read books.

This experience has had a happy ending. With determination and the strong support of my wife, I won in my vacation struggle against the Internet, realizing finally that it was I, not the iPad, that was the problem. I knew I had won when we passed a Starbucks and my wife asked if I wanted to stop to use the Wi-Fi. “I don’t need it,” I said.

However, as we return to post-vacation life, a harder test begins: Can I continue when I’m back at work?

There are times when the need to know what’s being said right now is great.  I have no intention of giving up my convenience completely. But I hope to resist the temptation to check my e-mail every five minutes, which leads to checking my Twitter feed and a website or two.

I think a vacation is supposed to help you rest your brain to become more productive. Here I hope this one worked.

28. What do we know about the author’s last summer vacation?

    A. He was determined to enjoy the beautiful view.

    B. His iPad ruined his plan of finishing a great novel.

    C. He hated himself for acting as if he were working on vacation.

    D. He felt satisfied that he had stuck to his usual timetable.

29 What did the author do to keep away from the Internet this year?

A. He cut off his cellphone signal.

B. He handed his iPad to his wife.

C. He refused to cheat in his house.

D. He listened to the radio most of the time.

30. When back at work, the author will probably choose to ________.

A. keep control of when and how to use the Internet

B. continue to road more and more books

    C. stay away from the Internet for ever

    D. stop checking what is being said right now completely

31. What is the author’s opinion of a great vacation in the passage?

    A. A vacation is having nothing to do but read all day.

    B. A vacation proves that a life of pleasure is overvalued.

    C. A vacation means a change of pace to make one more creative.

D. A vacation is a period of time to do whatever one wishes to.

Urbanization

Until relatively recently, the vast majority of human beings lived and died without ever seeing a city. The first city was probably founded no more than 5500 years ago.   36   In fact, nearly everyone live on farms or in tiny rural(乡村的) villages. It was not until the 20th century that Great Britain became the first urban society in history a society in which the majority of people live in cities and do not farm for a living.

Britain was only the beginning.   37   The process of urbanization the migration(迁徙) of people from the countryside to the city was the result of modernization, which has rapidly transformed how people live and where they live.

In 1900, fewer than 40 of Americans lived in urban areas. Today, over 82 of Americans live in cities. Only about 2 live on farms.   38

Large cities were impossible until agriculture became industrialized. Even in advanced agricultural societies, it took about ninety-five people on farms to feed five people in cities.   39

Until modern times, those living in cities were mainly the ruling elite and the servants, laborers and professionals who served them. Cities survived by taxing farmer and were limited in size by the amount of surplus food that the rural population produced and by the ability to move this surplus from farm to city.

Over the past two centuries, the Industrial Revolution has broken this balance between the city and the country.   40   Today, instead of needing ninety-five farmers to feed five city people, one American farmer is able to feed more than a hundred non-farmers.

A. That kept cities very small.

B. The rest live in small towns.

C. The effects of urban living on people should be considered.

D. Soon many other industrial nations became urban societies.

E. But even 200 years ago, only a few people could live in cities.

F. Modernization drew people to the cities and made farmers more productive.

G. Modern cities have destroyed social relations and the health of human beings.

Is there link between humans and climate change or not? This question was first studied in the early 1900s. Since then, many scientists have thought that our actions do make a difference. In 1997, the Kyoto Protocol explained our role in the Earth’s changing atmosphere and set international limits for gas emissions(排放) from 2008 to 2012. Some countries have decided to continue these reductions until 2020. More recently, the Paris Agreement, stuck by nearly 200 countries, also aims to limit global warming. Recently I and other Red Cross volunteers met a group of victims from Hurricane Katrina. We were there,as mental health professionals,to offer“psychological first aid”and I was struck by the simple healing power of presence. As we walked in the gate to the shelter,we were greeted with a burst of gratitude (感激) from the first person we met.I felt appreciated, but also guilty, because I hadn’t really done anything yet.

I first realized the power of presence many years ago when a friend’s mother passed away unexpectedly.I had received a call saying she had just passed away.I wanted to rush down there immediately, but didn’t want to intrude(打扰)on this very personal period of sadness.I was torn about what to do.Another friend with me then said,“Just go.Just be there.”I did,and I will never regret it.

Since then,I have not hesitated to be in the presence of others.Once I sat at the bedside of a young man suffering from the pain of his AIDS-related dying. He was not awake, and obviously unaware of others’ presence. However, the atmosphere was by no means solemn. His family, playing guitars and singing, allowed him to be present with them as though he were still fully alive.

All aboard: try these out

Here are new card games popular in the Western geek circle that offer much brain work. Give them a try if you fancy testing your limits.

Mysterium

In this game, the players are to solve a murder mystery in order to put rest the soul of a wrongly-accused man who dies in prison.

Mysterium allows one player to be the ghost itself, who offers hints to other players in the way of “dream cards”. The dream cards will then lead players to the cards with details about the murder weapon, location and suspects. Figuring out the connections between these elements will help them find the murderer.

Playing the ghost can be fun, as Tony Mastrangeli, a game reviewer, puts it, “For me, some of the most fun comes from playing the ghost role. I like steering the ship and handing out cards.”

Pandemic: Legacy

In this game, you and your friends play a team of doctors and scientists, who can help to prevent four deadly diseases from wiping out humanity. This is a cooperative game, which means you and your teammates either live together or die together.

By drawing an instruction card, teammates will be able to move, treat diseases or build a research station. If they draw one of the five “epidemic” (流行病) cards, the city will suffer a disease outbreak. If handled wrong, outbreaks might lead to a chain reaction and cause things to crash down.

Pandemic: Legacy requires you to look at the bigger picture before making any decisions. Finding the balance between treating diseases and seeking more permanent cures is a constant challenge.

60. Playing the ghost in Mysterium offers you a lot of fun because __________.

B. you can solve the murder mystery by yourself

C. you can dominate the whole game

D. you can select your partners

62. Which of the following is NOT true about Pandemic: Legacy?

A. It’s a role-play game.

B. Its players need to beat one another.

C. It provides fun and mental challenge.

D. It calls for carefulness and comprehensive thinking to win the challenge.

It never occurred to anybody, not even the creators that the world would care about the complex lives, loves and sufferings of a group of attractive and witty New Yorkers. But there’s no doubt that Friends(老友记)has become more than just a successful situation comedy—it has established itself as one of the last great television phenomena of the last century. Along the way, it has made its half-dozen leading actors famous.

Looking back on the strong friendship between the group of three men and three women who frequently gather at each other’s apartments and at Greenwich Village’s Central Perk coffee house, Friends was created by television producers, David Crane and Marta Kauffman. In 1993, the pair met producer Kevin S. Bright. Then the three became partners and got a deal to produce a new comedy for Warner Brothers. What they came up with was based on Crane and Kauffman’s after-college years, when they hung out at the local coffee house and involved themselves in every aspect of each other’s lives.

It didn’t take long for viewers to make friends with Friends. The situation comedy quickly became a top ten hit. Critics loved it as well. Entertainment Weekly said the show operated like a Broadway show, with twisty plots and unique jokes. The television theme song has also been a success with the public. The song’s success helped save the television theme song. An ABC(美国广播公司)executive was ready to order very short music intros(前奏) on his network’s shows, thinking that viewers would hit the remote control as soon as the opening started. But the success of the Friends theme song led the ABC executive to change his mind-- remote controls or not, the TV theme song would stay.

Years have gone by, but Friends remains and will remain an example of a modern US situation comedy that is both hugely entertaining television and nothing short of a genuine latter-day social phenomenon.

B. Producer, Kevin S. Bright, graduated from the same college as David Crane.

C. ABC once replaced the theme song of its TV show with a short music intro.

D. Marta Kauffman expected Friends to achieve great success.

31. What might the author think of Friends?

 A. Its merits outweigh its shortcomings.

   B. He/she shows great affection towards it.

C. Its success lies in the lack of good situation comedies.

   D. He/she has a reserved attitude towards its success.

I like to look your eyes when I’m speaking to you .” The new boy looked at the teacher for a few seconds and all the other students wondered    70     the boy would do. Then he took them off, gave a big smile and said, “That is cool.”
