Dear Miss Manners,

Friends of mine lost their home in a house fire. It was terrible. Another friend set up a “go fund me” type page for friends and to donate and help the couple. Many friends, including me, helped with money, meals, lamprey and their dog while they were getting back on their feet.

Last week, they sent thank-you notes. My roommate received one addressed to her and I did not. The notes were not in modularized; It was a printed one-size-fits-all message. My roommate realized I didn't receive a thank you note, so she sent a private message to the couple just letting them know I had been left out. I didn't know she had done this until later.

The next day, I got a text message apologizing and saying that I had been left out because their friend who addressed the notes must have missed me! Miss Manners, they didn't even address the notes themselves! It was accompanied by a picture of the thank-you note, which was texted to me with the message, “Here is a thank you just for you.”

I was a little annoyed. I helped them in their need and didn't get a second thought. I have not responded to her text message. Is it fair of me to consider this friendship over? Should I tell her that I am upset, or should I accept that this rude thank you was better than nothing?

21. For what purpose did Mary write the letter?

  A. To start a public donation for the unlucky couple

  B. To teach us how to see the true colors of friendship

  C. To tell us to learn a lesson from her story.

    D. To ask for advice on how to deal with her annoyance

22. From the letter we can infer that__________.

  A. the couple lost their car in the fire so they had to go everywhere on foot

  B. so far Mary hasn't received a thank-you-note addressed to her

  C. Mary's roommate sent the couple a message to blame their carelessness

   D. the couple left Mary out by accident when they wrote the thank you notes

23. What does Mary think of the couple she helped?

   A. careless     B. considerate      C . unbelievable    D. unreliable

24. The letter is most likely taken from  ________ .

   A. a diary     B. a brochure    C. a newspaper     D. a report

In 1998 I had an experience that had a deep and lasting effect on me. Eric and I were eating lunch at a local soup and salad place,  41  I noticed a woman cleaning the tables nearby. She looked very sad and  42 , as if she’d just been severely  43  by her boss or had gotten some bad news.

Eric and I didn’t have a lot of money at the time 44  eating this cheap meal was a stretch(滥用)of our budget(预算)―but as we were  45  up to leave, I walked up to this woman,  46  her a $5 bill and said, “I know the work you do is probably not  47 , but I want you to know that we think you’re doing a great job.”

The woman’s facial  48  changed quickly, from sadness to real  49 . She looked me straight in the eye and said, “Thank you very much.” She did her best to  50  back tears but with only partial success. I don’t  51  what else she said to me, but I’ll always remember the look on her face. At that moment we were really connected―human being to human being. I  52 whether it was the $5 that mattered to her―in fact it was the  53  that someone treated her as a real person. Eric and I were both deeply moved by the  54 .

Doing that small service  55  this woman made me forget my own worries. At least temporarily I entered a higher  56  of consciousness, shooting right up to the state of joy. I didn’t  57  that state for long, but I had a  58  experience that made me a different person.

That  59  taught me that even when I’m not in a great place myself, I still have the capacity to have a  60  effect on someone else. I don’t have to do anything unusual30 seconds to offer a kind word to a stranger is all it takes.

As a lover of languages and cultures, I am shocked to hear that some people refuse to watch foreign movies just because they are subtitled(配字幕).The actor' s voice is of vital importance and the emotions that he or she conveys cannot be conveyed by a person reading a voice-over(画外音).

Actors invest a lot of time and energy in preparing for and performing their roles. They try to use various techniques to fully express their emotions. Obviously, an actor' s voice is one of the most effective methods to impress the audience. Their unique voices help them to shape the characters they play and bring them to life. When it all comes together, the audience can become lost in the action and the characters become real to them.

I have never liked dubbed(配音的)movies. I remember watching a few dubbed movies when I was a child. The voices didn't match the movements of the actors' mouthsthe dubbed voices were exaggerated, and I knew that those people in the movies weren't really speaking English. By the time I was twelve, I was watching subtitled movies and never thought twice about it.

Watching subtitled movies from all over the world is highly beneficial. I immediately recognize people speaking Korean, Chinese, Spanish, and Italian when I walk down the street. When I was studying Japanese, watching subtitled movies helped me learn the language and made me a better speaker. I had never heard spoken Swedish until I saw a Swedish movie and I was amazed at some of the similarities between Swedish and English.

I laugh when I read movie reviews on Amazon. com where people give movies bad reviews because the DVD only had a subtitled option and no dubbed option. They complain about having to read the movie, as if reading was some difficult task. Not only am I into a movie, reading the subtitle also becomes a pleasure.

24. What does the author aim to explain in Paragraph 2?

    A. How actors impress the audience.      B. How actors prepare for their roles.

    C. The importance of actors' voices.       D. The difficulties of playing characters.

25. When watching dubbed movies as a child, the author felt _____.

    A. excited          B. surprised        C. relaxed             D. dissatisfied

26. According to Paragraph 4, watching subtitled movies allows the author to_____.

    A. recognize many famous people         B. make friends with some foreigners

    C. know more about foreign languages     D. become good at speaking Swedish

27. The reviewers mentioned in the last paragraph_____.

    A. like to watch dubbed movies           B. seldom watch movies at home

    C. have no interest in reading books       D. need both subtitled and dubbed movies

Kong Zi , also called Confucius (551-479 B.C) , and Socrates (469-399 B. C) lived only a hundred years apart , and during their lifetimes there was no contact between China and Greece, but it is interesting to look at how the world that each of these great philosophers came from shaped their ideas , and how these ideas in turn ,shaped their societies.

Neither philosopher lived in times of peace, though there were more wars in Greece than in China. The Chinese states were very large and feudal, while the Greek city-states were small and urban. The urban environment in which Socrates lived allowed him to be more radical than Confucius. Unlike Confucius, Socrates was not asked by rules how to govern effectively. Thus, Socrates was able to be more idealistic, focusing on issues like freedom, and knowledge for its own sake. Confucius, on the other hand, advised those in government service, and many of his students went out to government service.

Confucius suggested the Golden Rule as a principle for the conduct of life:” Do not do to others what you would not want others to do to you.” He assumed that all men were equal at birth, though some had more potential than others, and that it was knowledge that set men apart. Socrates focused on the individual, and thought that the greatest purpose of man was to seek wisdom. He believed that the superior class should rule the inferior(下层的)classes.

For Socrates, the family was of no importance, and the community of little concern. For Confucius, however, the family was the centre of the society, with family relations considered much more important than political relations.

Both men are respected much more today than they were in their lifetimes.

It was a day in late June, gray and depressing, with clouds hanging low. My husband and I were driving to Nova Scotia, Canada, for a much-needed vacation. We traveled tiredly, hoping to  36   rest and dinner before the rain came. Suddenly, on a lonely stretch of highway, the storm  37   . Cascades of water shut us in, making driving impossible. We   38    onto the shoulder of the road and stopped.

Then, as though someone had turned off a celestial tap, it   39   . A thin radiance, like a spray of gold,  40   from the clouds. Every blade of grass was crystalline as the sun flashed on   41    drops. The very road shone, and a rainbow arched across the sky. It was as though this beam of color had been built for us   42   . We could hardly speak for awe and joy.

A friend of mine has described a   43    experience. She had walked out on a lonely beach at twilight. It was a time of grief for her, and   44    was what she wanted. Offshore, across the darkening sea, she made out the   45    of an anchored fishing boat, and in it the figure of a man. My friend told me that after a while, she felt an intense and glowing sense of oneness with that    46    figure. It was as though sea and sky and night and those two solitary human beings were united in a kind of profound identity. “I was    47   by joy,” she said.

48   almost anything may serve as the motivation of such a feeling—stars shine on new snow; a sudden field of daffodils; a moment in marriage when hand reaches out to hand in the    49    that this other person speaks as you speak, feels as you feel.        What if these moments of joy are given to us to  52   that this is the way we are meant to live? What if the clarity of joy is the way we should be seeing all the time? To many people, it seems almost wicked to feel this radiance in a world  53   as ours is. But most generations have known uncertainty and   54   . The more damaged the world, the more we need to remember the luminous beauty at the center of life. Our moments of joy are  55   that at the heart of darkness an unquenchable(不可遏制的) light shines.

Joy is the feeling that we have touched the edge of something far beyond ourselves.

Societies all over the world name places in similar ways. Quite often there is no official naming ceremony but places tend to be called names as points of reference by people. Then an organized body steps in and gives the place a name. Frequently it happens that a place has two names: One is named by the people and the other by the government. As in many areas, old habits died hard, and the place continues to be called by its unofficial name long after the meaning is lost.

Many roads and places in Singapore(新加坡) are named in order that the pioneers will be remembered by future generations. Thus we have names such as Stamford Road and Raffles Place. This is in keeping with traditions in many countries ---- in both the West and the East.

Another way of naming places is naming them after other places. Perhaps they were named to promote friendships between the two places or it could be that the people who used to live there were originally from the places that the roads were named after. The mystery is clearer when we see some of the roads named in former British bases. If you step into Selector Airbase you will see Piccadilly Circus ---- obviously named by some homesick Royal Air Force personnel.

Some places were named after the activities that used to go on at those places. Bras Basah Road is an interesting example, “Base Basah” means “wet rice” in Malay(马来语). Now why would anyone want to name a road “Wet Rice Road”? The reason is simple. During the pioneering days, wet rice was laid out to dry along this road.

A few roads in Singapore are named by their shapes. There is “Circular Road” for one. Other roads may have part of their names to describe their shapes, like “Paya Lebar Crescent”. This road is called a crescent(月牙) because it begins on the main road, makes a crescent and comes back to join the main road again.

36. We learn from Paragraph 1 that _____.

   A. the government is usually the first to name a place

   B. many places tend to have more than one name

   C. a ceremony will be held when a place is named

   D. people prefer the place names given by the government

37. What does the underlined phrase “die hard” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

   A. Change suddenly.          B. Change significantly.

   C. Disappear mysteriously.     D. Disappear very slowly.

38. Which of the following places is named after a person?

   A. Raffles Place.        B. Selector Airbase.

   C. Piccadilly Circus.     D. Paya Lebar Crescent.

39. Bras Basah Road is named _______.

   A. after a person      B. after a place     C. after an activity    D. by its shape

40. What can be inferred from the passage?

   A. Some place names in Singapore are the same as in Britain.

   B. Some places in Singapore are named for military purposes.

   C. The way Singaporeans name their places is unique.

   D. Young Singaporeans have forgotten the pioneers.

山东省实验中学2017届高三下学期第二次模拟考试

I vividly remember walking back to my house after collecting the afternoon mails. I saw a credit card statement, another credit card statement and our bank statements. I was in that moment that I felt a deep tension.

I realized that even though I had married a man who I absolutely loved and adored, I really didn’t have a clear sense of how he handled money and how the two of us were going to combine our different approaches to handling money in our marriage. I was more organized and detailed, but he was more of a laid-back type. I knew that getting on the same financial page was a key factor in creating a successful marriage and financial future.

I asked my husband if he would be willing to set up a time each week to talk about our finances and develop a plan for getting rid of our credit card debt. My husband said he would be willing to do this. Admittedly, he was skeptical but willing.

We came to refer to our weekly meetings as our Financial Dates. We didn’t really have a clue as to what we were doing. All we knew was that we needed to give our finances serious attention. Some Dates were filled with tense conversations. Other Dates were filled with laughter, joy and creativity. However, we kept showing up for our Dates and we never gave up. What started out as a means for survival became a powerful connecting thread in our relationship. Something shifted within us.

Instead of our finances becoming a source of divisive tension that pulled us apart, they became

the glue that held us together as we became a unified team.

I still recall the day that we excitedly crossed off our last credit card payment on the chart we had created. We had finally arrived. We were free. We had been given wings to fly.

Now, whenever I feel huge stress I ask myself, “How am I contributing to what is happening right now?” This gives me the ultimate power to take action. Even though my husband and I don’t have any guarantee against future challenges, I am left with something deep within that is unshakable

and that can never be taken away the memory of our past successes and the power to integrate (整合) these lessons in my day-to-day life.

51. Why did the author feel nervous when collecting the afternoon mails?

   A. She was not sure about her marriage.

   B. She didn’t know how to handle money.

   C. She could feel the pressure of the huge debt.

   D. She was reminded of the quarrels in the family.

52. Which word can replace the underlined word “laid-back” in the second paragraph?

A. relaxed.            B. skeptical.          C. lazy.          D. confident.

53. What can we learn from the Financial Dates?

A. They showed the couple clear direction at first.

B. They left the couple nothing but deep sadness.

C. They were once interrupted but quickly continued.

D. They strengthened the couple’s relationship at last.

54. We can infer that when faced with stress the author will _______.

A. try to change the situation                               B. focus on what contributes to it

C. get power from the memory                                  D. feel free to do what she likes

America, the“land of immigrants”, has always had people of many different nationalities and languages. A survey indicates that ethnic settlements, found particularly in the central cities, have kept the language and culture of American immigrants. Some local residents can do quite well in their native language, without having to bother learning English. __ 1    . Yet only three percent reported that they spoke English “not well” or “not at all”. That means that slightly more than one out of ten Americans could be considered bilingual. Besides that, many high school and college students--and even some elementary school students--are required to take a foreign language as a part of their course. More and more people pick up another language besides English.

__ 2   Since the 1980s, the “English Only” movement has sought to make a law which would establish English as the “official language” and limit the use of non-English languages. Howeversome groupsincluding TESOL, the organization for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Language, object to such“language limitation”. Their viewknown as “English Plus”, suggests that Americans should have respect for people’s native and help them fit into the mainstream of society. But so far, nineteen states have passed English Only law, and the topic is the focus of an ongoing debate.

Whether or not English is the official language, it remains the language of wider communication. Nearly everyone recognizes the need to develop a good ability in English in order to do well in America. To help those who want to improve their English skills, English as a Second LanguageESLclasses are around. Cities with large numbers of recent immigrants often set up bilingual education programmers to teach students content subjects in their native language while they improve their English.    3

Americans recognize that English is the international language, and people with good English skills can get by in many international settings.   4   They can build cross—cultural bridges and give people an edge in a variety of career fields. Indeed, lack of foreign language ability can limit one’s chances for advancement and keep one in a cultural dead—end street. As many people in America are discovering, it is absolutely not a laughing matter.
