My View on Growing Pains

Dear newcomers,

On behalf of all the experienced hands, I would like to share my view on Growing Pains.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

[1]Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I’m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don’t come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that’s just the reality of how life is.

[2]However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And, in addition to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. To become great at certain things, it’ll require even more time, time that most people won’t put in.

[3]This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don’t enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it.

[4]When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have _____________ a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It’s sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there’s a huge chance that you’re wrong anyway.

[5]Whatever you do, if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. If you’re not willing to put in the time and work, don’t expect to receive any rewards. Consistent, hard work won’t guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.

My younger daughter is my living   44 of why I must keep trying. In fact, the other day, she reminded me once again.

The two of us had taken a bike ride to the 45  . After buying a cool treat for my daughter, she sat down at a table in   46  admiring the ice cream she held in her hand. Suddenly a look of worry   47  on her face. “Do I have to rush, Mama?”

When she got to the last bite, she held out a spoonful of ice crystals and sweet juice for me. “I 56   the last bite for you, Mama,” my daughter said 57  . As I left the icy goodness put out my thirst, I 58   I just got the deal of a lifetime. I gave my child a little time… and 59  , she gave me her last bite and reminded me that things taste sweeter and love is  60  to get when you stop rushing through life.

A Chinese graduate’s record-setting $8,888,888 donation to his school at Yale University has caused wide debate at home.

The donation will primarily help build the new SOM campus, while part of it will provide scholarship support for the International Relations Program at Yale’s new Jackson Institute of Global Affairs, as well as fund (资助) a variety of China-related activities at the university.

Some asked why Zhang Lei, who graduated from Yale less than 10 years ago, chose an overseas institution rather than Renmin University, his alma mater (母校), for the donation. But a larger group of people online voiced supporting for Zhang’s move and said there is still room for improvement regarding management of universities in China.

“We should look at this news from an international standpoint,” said Chi Fulin, professor and president of China Institute for Development and Reform. Chi said, “Although Yale gets the money, the donation will also benefit China.”

“It will promote more Sino-US exchange programs, and more Chinese will be involved in these exchanges.” He said that China has also received a lot of support and funding from overseas donors, and Zhang’s move should be regarded with “respect, understanding and encouragement”.

In terms of cultural and educational exchanges between China and the US, a larger part of financial aid comes from non-government organizations. “China should also try to attract more donations through such channels in the future,” he said.

Zhang said Yale changed his life and taught him the spirit of giving. “Yale has been helping China for more than 100 years.” He said, “Many Chinese leaders were educated at Yale. But the relationship has been one-way for too long and I want to help change that.”

Zhang, who graduated from the Yale School of Management in 2002, worked for the Yale Investments Office. In 2005, Zhang founded Hillhouse Capital Management Ltd, a Beijing-based investment fund that manages $2.5 billion.

52. What’s the writer’s attitude towards Zhang Lei’s donation to Yale?

We are in an age when people take picture everywhere. They enjoy it even when in a museum or invited for a meal. A report shows that teens in many countries, especially in China, is always seen taking pictures update their websites with them. Besides, they are serious about getting 100 likes because of getting anything less is considered embarrassed. Some parents worry that this type of thinking is far too competitively for teens. And some teens don’t think so. “If I got wrap up in my likes or views, I’d go crazy. Never let your values be determined by how someone else thinks.”

Father's Day is a fairly new celebration in the British calendar compared with Mother's Day, which has been a very popular and well celebrated festival in the UK for a very long time

Father’s Day was first celebrated by American  1  it was inspired by the actions of a man named William Smart He was a veteran(退伍军人)of the US Civil War and his wife  2  away giving birth to their sixth childHe  3  six children alone without remarrying, which was undoubtedly  4   back in those days

Father's Day is never quite such the big commercial event   12   Mother's Day is, probably because it hasn't been in   13   for so longBut what do British people do for Father's Day?

Well, most people would buy their fathers a cardThe card would probably have a nice message in it   14  what a great Dad their father isSome people do buy presents as well

15   gifts for Dads are probably ties, chocolates or socks because these are things that Dads can  16   use even if they don't want themIn the run-up(即将到来之际)to Father's Day, or indeed Mother's Day, there will be ads on the TV giving  17  ideas of CDs or gadgets (小玩具,小玩意)we can buyCard shops will be full of mugs or pens and similar goods with “World's Greatest Dad”  18   on them

Some families   19  do things together to celebrate Father's Day like going for a mealAs a special treat, British people might give their Dad a bit of a rest ,  20   him a cup of tea, or even wash his car and mow the lawn(除草) to make him feel really appreciated

---I as well as my family, will go to Shanghai for vacation tomorrow.

--- __________ Do remember sending me a gift when you are back.

A. Have fun!                                         B. That’s very nice of you.

C. It’s a pleasure.                                 D. So what?

I had been following the yellowish-green markers for a “popular and easy” three-mile out-and-back hike. Immediately after the trailhead(山道的起点), the trail became very rocky and steep. But having read information about the hike, I knew within five minutes, I was supposed to reach the hike’s first overlook.

However, the overlook never arrived. Instead, I found myself lost in the woods. Pulling out my cellphone, I saw it read “no service”. I checked the last text message I’d sent to my mom. It read, “Conference ended…going for a small hike before my flight home this afternoon.” I put my phone away and kept moving and yelling, “Help! Is anybody out there?” Every so often, I’d stop to listen, but I never heard a reply.

I got out my phone again. The battery was running out fast as it searched for a signal. I struggled to find a place where I could get service. When I did, I called my mom. It went through! In a shaky voice, I said, “Mom?” And then the call dropped. More than 1,500 miles away, my mom instantly knew something was wrong. She called the Denver Police Department and was directed to the US Forest Service.

This was how I was introduced to John, an operator from the US Forest Service. Following John’s instruction on the phone, I finally escaped from the woods. I breathed a sigh of relief. Then my phone rang, and it was John, making sure I was still going in the right direction. “By the way,” he said, “we’ve had your mother on hold this whole time. We know once you get down the mountain, you will absolutely want to give her a call.”

Yesterday was my stepmothers birthday. I havent been home for a long time, so I wanted to stop by the house to see her on this special day.

I have been struggling on a low income so I was afraid that I couldnt afford the long trip. Gas is so expensive nowadays! Anyway, I filled my tank with gas and set off.

I stopped at a shopping mall and found a present. It was the perfect gift and I knew she would love it. But when I got to the cashier, my card was declined! I didnt have enough money in my account to pay for the gift!

So I pondered the issue for a few minutes. I could put it back and get something cheaper, but I knew there was nothing else in the store she would have liked as much. So, I got to my smart-phone and transferred some money from my saving account and was able to buy the gift. It took a big part of my savings but I wanted her to have something special.

It turned out that she loved the gift and I felt that even though I had spent almost all my money, my stepmother deserved the best. I was glad I gave her the best I could.

Before I left my parents house, my dad took me to one side and, with our secret handshake, he gave me some money. I hadnt said anything to him about my financial condition, but I guessed my dad just knew it. When I got to the car, I saw the amount he gave me was three times what I had spent on the gas and the gift!

As for old peoplesome of the applications are hard to use because they didn't grow up with them. They don't have simple models of how they should workwhat to do when something doesn't work or where to go for help. We make it as easy as possible to be used for people who are not familiar with the technology.

I think there is huge potential(潜力) and we are designing it. The ability to connect to friendswho remember the same movies and news and musicis really importantespecially as people get old. They end up in retirement homes and they aren't always close to their friends. Allowing the network to help them connect with friends and family is a really powerful thing.

My mother is an enthusiastic user of the Internetalthough it took me years to get her to use email. She was born with normal hearingbut lost it when she was 3.She was totally deaf for many yearsuntil age 53when she got ear aids. They work really well. That is a big change for her. But before thenher friends couldn't call her on the phoneso they insisted (坚持) she use e-mail to communicate with them.

Young people don't even think of the Internet as technology. It’s just thereand they use it. There’s been a very interesting change in communications styles between old people and young people. There are some kids who are now in their teens and aren't willing to make phone calls. And they think of e-mail as old-fashioned and slow.

The reason why teens don't make phone calls seems to be that they don’t know what to say. When they call they often stop for a while. They don't know what to sayand there's this silence. On the other handtexting is considered properand it's okay if you don't answer. You might have been distracted (心烦意乱的)It's not considered rude. But it is considered strange if you're in this kind of voice conversation and simply stop talking.

24. What is the trouble that old people meet when surfing the Internet?

       A. They don’t know how to use some applications.

       B. They have to buy electronic productions at a high price.

       C. There is no professional teacher to teach them how to use the Internet.

       D. They have no friends to communicate with online.

25. We can infer from the passage that the author is a ________

       A. company manager               B. program designer

       C. college professor                D. mobile phone designer

26. What do the young people think of the Internet according to the passage?

       A. Interesting.     B. Amazing.          C. Boring.      D. Common.

27. Which of the following statements is true?

A. Teens face challenges when taking phone calls with the old.

     B. The author's mother is still using e-mail to communicate with others after

getting ear aids.

C. Teens like to send texts to communicate with others in order to avoid

embarrassment.

D. Most people consider e-mail as the most old-fashioned tool to communicate

with others.

Are the years you spent at school best years of your life? Personally, I found most lesson rather uninteresting. We had to sit at our desks in silence and paid attention to what the teachers were saying. They were used to write on the blackboard and ask us difficulty questions. We also had to do plenty of homework, and hand it no time. We had to wear school uniforms and obey lots of rules. I left school as soon as I can and started work. I read books at the public library, and late I decided to attend college. Now I really enjoy study because I’m growing old and know what I want it. When I was at school. I was just the wrong age!

Walt Disney created a special phrase for persistence and determination. He referred to it as “sticktoitivity”. The majority of people are so  41  of failure. They don’t know the Japanese have a wonderful way of looking at  42 . Their saying “Fall seven times; stand up eight” is a   43  explanation to sticktoitivity!

A good friend of mine has a business that he has  44  on for over five years. He knows that his  45   has the potential that can increase sales ten times.  46   , to do so, he has to probably break the rules that make him  47 where he is today. He  48   gives up his dream, and he is an example of sticktoitivity!

Basketball star Michael Jordan  49   sticktoitivity in one of his shoe advertisements: “I’ve missed more than nine thousand shots in my whole  50   . I’ve lost almost three hundred games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot but  51   . I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life, and that is why I  52 .”

We know some other examples of  53  people about “sticktoitivity”. For example, Steven spielberg   54  high school in the first year. He was persuaded to come back and  55  in a learning disabled class. He lasted a month and gave up his school  56  because everyone thought he wasn’t able to learn. Who could tell that he would become a most famous director in the US at that time?

Have you ever defined “success” or “failure” on your own terms? I   57  recommend doing so. It certainly helps create a sense of understanding in your life. Sometimes success is learning how to fail. Sometimes success is overcoming the obstacles that  58  failure. Remember, the only failure is not learning  59  from the failure. So it’s  60  for you to stand up on the eighth time!
