Owning a smart phone may not be as smart as you think. They may let you surf the Internet, listen to music and snap photos wherever you are… but they also turn you into a workaholic, it seems.
A study suggests that, by giving you access to emails at all times, the all-singing, all-dancing mobile phone adds as much as two hours to your working day. Researchers found that Britons work an additional 460 hours a year on average as they are able to respond to emails on their mobiles.
The study by technology retailer Pixmania reveals the average UK working day is between 9 and 10 hours, but a further two hours is spent responding to or sending work emails, or making work calls. More than 90 percent of office workers have an email-enabled phone, with a third accessing them more than 20 times a day. Almost one in ten admits spending up to three hours outside their normal working day checking work emails. Some workers confess they are on call almost 24 hours a day, with nine out of ten saying they take work emails and calls outside their normal working hours. The average time for first checking emails is between 6 am and 7 am, with more than a third checking their first email in this period, and a quarter checking them between 11 pm and midnight.
Ghadi Hobeika, marketing director of Pixmania, said, “The ability to access literally millions of apps, keep in contact via social networks and take photos and video as well as text and call has made smart phones invaluable for many people. However, there are drawbacks. Many companies expect their employees to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and smart phones mean that people literally cannot get away from work. The more constantly in contact we become, the more is expected of us in a work capacity.”
21. What can we conclude from the text?
A. All that glitters is not gold. B. Every coin has two sides.
C. It never rains but pours. D. It’s no good crying over spilt milk.
22. The underlined word “accessing” in the third paragraph can be replaced by .
A. calling B. reaching C. getting D. using

B. Nine-tenths spend over three hours checking work emails.
C. One fourth check their first mails between 11 pm and midnight.

24. What’s the main idea of the text?

When a rather dirty , poorly dressed person kneels at your feet and puts out his hands to beg for a few coins , do you hurry on , not knowing what to do , or do you feel sad and hurriedly hand over some money ? What should our attitude to beggars be ? There can be no question that the world is full of terribly sad stories . It must be terrible to have no idea where our next meal is going to come from . It seems cruel not to give some money to beggars .
Certainly , most of the world’s great religions order us to be open-hearted and share what we have with those less fortunate than ourselves .But has the world changed ?Maybe what was morally right in the old days ,when one knew exactly who in the village had suffered misfortune and needed help ,is no longer the best idea. Quite a few people will not give to beggars .Let us look at their arguments.
First ,some believe that many city beggars dress up on purpose to look pitiable and actually make a good living from begging .Giving to beggars only encourages this sort of evil.Secondly ,there is the worry that the money you give will be spent on beer ,wine or drugs .Thirdly ,there is the opinion that there is no real excuse for begging. One might be poor ,but that is no reason for losing one’s sense of pride and self-dependence.
Related to this is the opinion that the problem should be dealt with by the government rather than ordinary people .Some people think beggars should go to the local government department and receive help.
It is hard to come to any final conclusion ;there are various cases and we must deal with them differently .A few coins can save a life in some situations ,and even if the money is wasted ,that does not take sway the moral goodness of the giver.

—I wish I the play at the Little Theatre.

William Stone, a spokesman of one of the biggest import & export companies in Yorkshire, Britain, was making an angry speech at a business conference in Berlin for seeking a complete solution to the problem of so called “Mad Cow Disease”, which had been spreading quickly throughout the country and was regarded as a direct cause of the death of a 12-year-old schoolgirl who was said to have eaten some well-done beef and died two weeks later. The death caused great fear among beef-eaters all over the world.
“We don’t believe it since until now I haven’t received even a smallest piece of paper reporting the real cause of the death,” said Mr Stone excitedly facing the thirty representatives from at least twenty countries that had been the biggest import countries of the British beef but now refused to have it. When he saw no signs of anybody being willing to speak out, Mr Stone got madder, adding, “You will have to eat beef every day, won’t you? In the past, to get our beef, you ordered in advance, as much as you could, saying in your thank-you letter, … without the British beef we can’t imagine what a colorless sight would be on our countrymen’s dinner tables.”
“But now, gentlemen, you say ‘Mad Cow Disease…Death frightening … sorry to stop enjoying your beef for the moment!’” Mr Stone let out a shout and then seized a handful of paper out from a paper bag lying beside the microphone, “Here, here … What you are thinking about is all here. Have a look at your telegram, gentlemen!”
His audience looked at each other, still expressionless. “Well, let our beef rot away,” Mr Stone continued. “And let your men go hungry—they’ll be mad one day. Thank you!” He took his handkerchief out of his pocket, wiping off sweat while walking down back to his seat. All of the listeners stayed silent for seconds, then laughter burst out.
They, including Mr Stone himself, laughed so much that the chairman of the conference announced a rest of ten minutes.

A.beef without disease B.some other beef
C.a kind of beef as he suggested D.as much British beef as before
3.The underlined word “mad” means “___________” on Mr Stone’s side, but “________” on the listeners side.

Gravitational waves are the ripples(波纹) in the pond of space time. The gravity of large objects warps space and time, or “space time” as physicists call it, the way a bowling ball changes the shape of a trampoline(蹦床) as it rolls around on it. Smaller objects will move differently as a result — like marbles spiraling(盘旋) toward a bowling-ball-sized dent(凹迹) in a trampoline instead of sitting on a flat surface.
Scientists announced that they have succeeded in detecting gravitational waves from the violent merging(兼并) of two black holes in deep space. The detection was regarded as a victory for a controversial, delicately crafted, billion-dollar physics experiment and as confirmation of a key prediction of Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity.
There is no obvious, immediate consequence of this physics experiment, but the scientists say this opens a new window on the universe. Until now, astronomy has been almost exclusively a visual enterprise: Scientists have relied on light, visible and otherwise, to observe the cosmos.
But now gravitational waves can be used as well. They could potentially take a census of black-hole mergers, spot the collisions of ultra-dense neutron stars(中子星), probe the inner dynamics of exploding stars and discover theoretical “cosmic strings” left over from the big bang.
These waves will be particularly useful for studying black holes (the existence of which was first implied by Einstein’s theory) and other dark objects, because they’ll give scientists a bright beacon to search for even when objects don’t emit actual light. Mapping the abundance of black holes and frequency of their mergers could get a lot easier.
Since they pass through matter without interacting with it, gravitational waves would come to Earth carrying undistorted information about their origin. They could also improve methods for estimating the distances to other galaxies.
It will also start a new era of astronomy in which gravitational waves are tools for studying the most mysterious and exotic objects in the universe.
33. According to the passage, which of the following is true about the experiment of gravitational waves?
A. It is a success and was approved of by all.
B. It is well designed though time and money consuming.
C. It proves that black holes do give out gravitational waves.
D. It proves one of the key predictions of Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity right.
34. Why is gravitational waves important?
A. Because scientists have relied on light, visible and otherwise, to observe the cosmos.
B. Because they have been used to discover facts about the inner dynamics of exploding stars.
C. Because they could make it possible to probe objects in total darkness even when they don’t give out light.
D. Because mapping the abundance of black holes and frequency of their mergers could be impossible without them.
35. The underlined word “undistorted” in paragraph 6 probably mean _______
A. Unrelated. B. Unfamiliar. C. Unchanged. D. Unreal.

Dear classmates,
It is a pleasure for I to have a chance to make a short speech today.Recently,I had found that some of our classmates study late into the night and do not spare some time to take a rest during the day either. They often cannot help fall asleep in class. And some classmates seldom have breakfast, that is also a bad habit and will surely do harm to our health.
In my opinion,it is extreme important for us to have enough sleep and a proper diet.We must learn to make a wise use of our time, and only in this way can we keep fit or study well.I wonder if you agree me.
Thank you for listening.

When being asked about this question, a large number of people which are interested in the topic hold the view that it’s beneficial to clone humans. In second place, human cloning may lead in some social disorder, and it is quite dangerous.

My Mother’s Hands
50 years ago, for some reason, I was not accepted by the school. However, it was my mum, who held my little hands and tried countless schools and managed to get me registered
50 years later, the day after my mother had slipped into a coma from a stroke, I sat next to her, holding her hand, stroking it, watching her body heaved up and down as she breathed heavily, like she was struggling with something.
A few days later. Mum died. At her bedside, I spent some time just looking at my mother, soaking in the finality of her death. There she was, my mother, motionless and lifeless. I took hold of her still warm but lifeless hand, holding it for the last time, recalling every piece of precious moment we spent together. . .
I finally let go of her hand---1ifeless, yet having given so much life to so many of us---and placed it next to her body. I found myself saying silently to her the only words that came to my mind, “Goodbye Mum, thank you for everything.”
Thank you, Mother, for not giving up, so that I could go to school. Thank you for coaching me, for reading to me, for ironing my school uniforms, for combing my hair, for tying my shoe laces, for making sure I had a little handkerchief inside my pocket…
Rest in peace, Mother, you are still very much alive in us. Happy Mother's Day
