高三英语下学期下册试题

Scientists have found living organisms trapped in crystals(晶体) that could be 50,000 years old.

The organisms were found in a hot, but beautiful cave system in Naica, Mexico. These ancient life forms can be seen only with a microscope. Penelope Boston, who leads the Astrobiology Institute at NASA, the space agency of the United States, says the ancient microbes(微生物) were able to live by eating minerals such as iron.

She spoke about the discovery recently at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. If the findings are confirmed, they will show how microbes can survive in extreme conditions. Forty different kinds of microbes and some viruses were found in the underground area. The genetic structures of these organisms are 10 percent different from those of their nearest relatives.

The caves in Naica are 800 kilometers deep. They were once used for mining lead. Before the miners began working in the caves, the area was separated from the surface and the outside world. Some of the caves are as big as the large religious centers built during Europe's Middle Ages. There are crystals covering the walls. The caves are so hot that scientists must wear special clothing to keep cool. The clothing keeps the crystals safe from human germs(病菌)or other damage. Boston said the researchers could only work for about 20 minutes at a time before they had to go to a room that was 38 degrees Celsius to cool down.

NASA officials would not let Boston share her findings with scientific experts before last week's announcement. So scientists could not say much about the findings. But Norine Noonan, a biologist with the University of South Florida, said she believed them. "Why are we surprised?" Noonan asked. "As a biologist, I would say life on Earth is extremely tough and extremely colorful."

Boston is also studying microbes commonly found inside caves in other countries, such as Ukraine and the United States. These microbes appear to be impossible to kill. Boston said they show how difficult life on Earth can be.

12. The existence of the ancient microbes relies on _______.

C. eating minerals    D. absorbing air

13. What can we infer about the caves in Naica from the passage?

A. The walls are covered by crystals.

B. The temperature in the caves is quite low.

C. The caves have been explored since they were formed.

D. The environment in the caves is difficult to adapt to.

14. What is the biologist Norine Noonan’s attitude towards the findings?

A. Critical    B. Positive.

C. Doubtful.    D. Indifferent.

15. What’s the main idea of the passage?...

A. Living organisms bring hope to scientific research.

B. Scientists Discover 50,000-year-old “super life” in Mexico.

C. Microbes show great power to survive in terrible conditions.

The splendid aurora light displays that appear in Earth’s atmosphere around the north and south magnetic(磁的) poles were once  mysterious phenomena. Now, scientists have data from satellites and ground-based observations from which we know that the aurora brilliance is a massive electrical discharge similar to that occurring in a neon sign.

To understand the cause of auroras, first picture the Earth enclosed by its magnetosphere(磁层), a huge region created by the Earth’s magnetic field. Outside the magnetosphere, rushing toward the earth is the solar wind, a speedily moving body of ionized(离子化的) gases with its own magnetic field. Charged particles(粒子) in this solar wind speed earthward along the solar wind’s magnetic lines of force. The Earth’s magnetosphere is a barrier to the solar winds, and forces the charged particles of the solar wind to flow around the magnetosphere itself. But in the polar regions, the magnetic lines of force of the Earth and of the solar wind gather together. Here many of the solar wind’s charged particles break through the magnetosphere and enter Earth’s magnetic field. They then rush back and forth between the Earth’s magnetic poles very rapidly and ionize and excite the atoms of the upper atmosphere of the Earth, causing them to produce aurora radiations of visible light.

The colors of an aurora depend on the atoms producing them. The leading greenish-white light comes from low energy excitation of oxygen atoms. During huge magnetic storms oxygen atoms also undergo high energy excitation and produce pink light. Excited nitrogen() atoms contribute bands of color varying from blue to violet. Viewed from outer space, auroras can be seen as dimly shining belts wrapped around each of the Earth’s magnetic poles. Each aurora hangs like a curtain of light stretching over the polar regions and into the higher latitudes. When the solar flares(闪光) that result in magnetic storms and aurora activity are very strong, aurora displays may extend as far as the southern regions of the United States.

58. What is it that directly gives off aurora light?

 A. the Earth’s magnetic field     B. the solar wind’s magnetic field

 C. the Earth’s ionized particles    D. the solar wind’s charged particles

59. What does the third paragraph mainly discuss?

A. The appearance of auroras around the Earth’s poles.

B. The periodic change in the display of auroras.

C. The factors that cause the variety of colors in auroras.

D. The covering area of auroras based on their colors.

60. What can we infer from the passage?

 A. The magnetosphere increases the speed of particles from the solar wind.

 B. The color of greenish-white appears least frequently in an aurora display.

 C. Earth’s magnetic field contributes to the variety and difference of aurora’s colors.

D. The strength of the solar flares has a positive effect on the extending distance of aurora.

Dior was born in Normandy in 1905, and his family' s original plans for him included a career in the diplomatic service, but by the time he was twenty-three, with his parents' money, he opened a small art gallery in Paris. By 1931, the money had been used up. Dior' s friends in the art gallery, asked him to draw and he took his first step at designing and drawing. His first job was with Lucien Lelong from whom Dior learned his craft (手艺).

In February,  1947,  Dior started the New Look in his first major Paris collection. He was backed by a famous textile producer, Boussac, who looked after the dollars, while Dior looked after the fashions. Dior knew nothing about cutting and sewing, but he was good at fashion design.

The New Look started an entirely different look to costume, with a tiny waist, a rounded shoulder and a shapely bust (胸围) , usually with a low-cut neckline and a long, full skirt. To women who had lived through the war years, the femaleness of the New look was a great success, for people were tired of tile extremely plain, wartime restrictive fashions.

It is said that dresses by Dior were "constructed like buildings," but young people were attracted to his design, and all over the western world, manufacturers plunged (投入) into the production of his new style.  Dior's revolutionary designs lighted up a whole cycle of fashion, rounded, gentle, feminine, a delight in elegance. A New Look House of Dior opened in 1948, followed by one in London. Considered as King of Couture (women' s clothing) for years, the Dior empire grew until it covered every country in the western world, and included furs, hosiery, jewelry, perfumes, men's wear and on and on.  More than 1,000 people worked at the Paris headquarters then.

His sudden death in 1957 when he was 54 years old did not stop the growth of the House of Dior. Even now, so many years after his death, his name is closely connected with fashion throughout the world, and indeed is one of the most recognized names in the world. His first, great New Look, with its long skirts was an expression of freedom in the late 1940s.

Among the international students in Canada who are struggling to find a job there after graduation, some of them eventually make it with relative ease. They’re the ones who’ve already built up much internship(实习)experience while still attending university,as their majors offer a co-operative program.

Co-op programs,a feature(特色)of Canadian university programs, allow academic studies to be combined with work experience.During school years, students get to network with employers, gain internship experience in relevant fields, and earn academic credits that count toward their degree or diploma.

Co-op programs are available in most comprehensive universities, like the University of Waterloo,Wilfrid Laurier University and York University. These programs are not only open to students majoring in business but also to many science and art majors.Statistics show that nearly 30 percent of recent foreign applicants have chosen majors that also subscribe to the co-op program.“It’s easy to understand,”said a senior education counselor. He noted that working opportunities are provided by employers that build bridges with the university and most of them are well-known companies or local government organizations. Moreover, the average salary for interns is as high as C$30,000 to C$40,000 a year.

Students can choose to work during vacations or term times freely. The required duration of the internship for undergraduates ranges from eight to twelve months,or four to six months for graduate students.“The programs also benefit those students who want to apply for immigration,”added the counselor.“That’s because the policies of many provinces in Canada require a certain length of work experience of the applicants.”

9. What's the main characteristic of co-op programs?

A. They offer a variety of jobs in different fields.    B. They make academic credits easier to gain.

C. Employers work with students on their studies.    D. Students get work experience while at university.

10. What does the example of foreign applicants indicate?

A. Co-op programs are becoming more popular.    B. The average salary for interns will increase.

C. Co-op programs are open to all majors.         D. Companies welcome foreign students.

Jonathan James looks like just another kid about to graduate from high school. But this 19- year-old Swede is anything but ordinary, from the computer in his parents’ home, he helps the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) find out the world’s most wanted web criminals.

Johathan first made headlines when he and another Swede, Fredrik Bjoerck, found out the maker of the “Melissa” virus in March 1999. He came to the aid of the FBI again on May 7, finding out the suspected sender of the dangerous “I LOVE YOU” virus. The suspect was caught in Manila on May 8.

Johathan’ s special skills are in hot demand as officials around the world express alarm at the “virtual” crime wave. In between studying for final exams, hanging out with friends and refereeing his younger brother’s football matches, the quiet, gentle teenager also gives lessons on e – security to large companies. He reads a lot and exchanges information with other computer experts to know much about the latest tricks of the hacker trade.

Many companies have already tried to employ him, but he is not interested at the moment. Instead, he plans to begin law school in the autumn at Sweden’s Uppsala University and start up his own e – security company.

Although he works with the FBI now, his family insists he’s just “a regular kid”. “Jonathan is a great kid, he has his friends and he does a lot more than just play with the computer,” his little sister Tessa said, adding that he helps the FBI because “he likes to help,” not because he’s looking for fame and recognition.

When the world was hit by the “Love Bug” virus, Jonathan was too busy preparing a speech on e – security to look into the problem. “Finally on May 7, I had some free time, so I began looking.” Within a few hours, he had found the suspect and e – mailed his method and results to the FBI. He said his work on the “Melissa” virus, which took three weeks to slove, was a big help in finding the suspect so quickly.

“This time I knew exactly where to start, I knew what to disregard and what to look at.”

1The passage mainly wants to tell us that__________.

Dear Wang Qiang,

                                                                                 Yours,

RED lanterns adorn(点缀) the aisles of a small supermarket. There are stacks of red envelopes on sale, for stuffing cash in and handing out as gifts. A sign offers seasonal discounts. Such festive trappings are quite common in China in the build-up to the lunar New Year, which this year starts on January 28th. But this is Yangon, the capital of Myanmar, where Han Chinese are a mere 2.5% of the country’s population. They are a sign that Chinese New Year is becoming a global holiday.

Several countries in Asia celebrate the lunar New Year in their own way. But dragon and lion dances in Chinatowns the world over have helped to make China’s the most famous. These days growing numbers of people who are not of Chinese descent are joining in. In Tokyo window cleaners dress up as the animals of the Chinese zodiac(十二生肖). Barcelona’s Chinese parade includes dracs (a Catalan species of dragon). America, Canada and New Zealand have issued commemorative stamps for the year of the chicken. Last year New York City made the lunar New Year a school holiday for the first time.

The spread of the spring festival, as China calls it, is partly due to recent emigration from China: 9.5 million Chinese people have moved abroad since 1978, many of them far richer than earlier waves of migrants. It also reflects the wealth and globe-trotting ambitions of China’s new middle class: festivities in other countries are partly aimed at the 6 million Chinese who are expected to spend their weeklong holiday abroad this year. International brands are trying to lure these big spenders with chicken-themed items.

Conscious of China’s growing economic and political clout, foreign leaders have taken to noting the occasion. Britain’s Prime Minister, Theresa May, has given a video address, a tradition started in 2014 by her predecessor, David Cameron. Last year the country’s royal family tweeted a picture of Queen Elizabeth dotting the eye of a Chinese lion-dancer’s costume. Also in 2016, Venezuela’s culture minister admitted that his country was celebrating Chinese new year for the first time—with six weeks of festivities—in a bid to improve economic ties with China. It is rumored that this year’s World Economic Forum in Davos was held a week earlier than usual to avoid clashing with Chinese New Year.

China also sponsors related events, such as a display this year of martial arts in Cyprus and a traditional Chinese temple-fair in Harare, Zimbabwe. It may give Chinese officials satisfaction to see foreigners enjoy such festivities. They lament the growing enthusiasm among Chinese for Western celebrations such as Christmas—in December cities across China are bedecked with Santas and snowflake decorations. Chinese New Year is a welcome chance to reverse the cultural flow.

From good reading we can derive pleasure, companionship, experience, and instruction. A good book may absorb our attention so completely that for the time being we forget our surroundings and even our identity. 36    It increases our contentment when we are cheerful, and lessens our troubles when we are sad. Whatever may be our main purpose in reading, our contact with good books should never fail to give us enjoyment and satisfaction.

37    Whether the characters portrayed(描绘) are taken from real life or are purely imaginary, they may become our companions and friends. In the pages of books we can walk with the wise and the good of all lands and all times. The people we meet in books may delight us either because they resemble human friends whom we hold or because they present unfamiliar types whom we are glad to welcome as new acquaintances. 38    However, the friends we make in books need never weary us with their company. 39    When human friends desert us, good books are always ready to give us friendship, sympathy, and encouragement. One of the most valuable gifts presented by books is experience. Few of us can travel far from home or have a wide range of experiences, but all of us can lead varied lives through the pages of books. Whether we wish to escape from the seemingly dull realities of everyday life or whether we long to visit some far-off place, a book will help us when nothing else can. To travel by book we need no bank account to pay our way; no airship or ocean liner or stream-lined train to transport us; no passport to enter the land of our heart's desire.

40    The beauties of nature, the enjoyment of music, the treasures of art, the triumphs of architecture, the marvels of engineering, are all open to the wonder and enjoyment of those who read.

A. With a good book in our hands we need never be lonely.

B. The possibilities of our literary experiences are almost unlimited.

C. Our literary experiences can be limited.

D. By turning the page we can dismiss them without any fear of hurting their feelings.

E. Our human friends sometimes may bore us.
