高三英语试题

Death is natural, but do you have any idea of the process of dying? Modern scientists divide the process of dying into two phases --- clinical or temporary death and biological death. Clinical death occurs when the vital organs, such as the heart or lungs, have ceased to function, but have not suffered permanent damage. The organism can still be revived(复活). Biological death occurs when changes in the organism lead to the “breaking up” of vital cells and tissues. Death is then unchangeable and final.

Scientists have been seeking a way to prolong the period of clinical death so that the organism can remain alive before biological death occurs. The best method developed so far involves cooling of the organism, combined with narcotic sleep. By slowing down the body’s metabolism(新陈代谢), cooling delays the processes leading to biological death.

To illustrate how this works, scientists performed an experiment on a six-year-old female monkey called Keta. The scientist put Keta to sleep with a narcotic. Then they surrounded her body with ice-bags and began checking her body temperature. When it had dropped to 28 degrees the scientists began draining blood from an artery. The monkey’s blood pressure decreased and an hour later both the heart and breathing stopped: clinical death set in. For twenty minutes Keta remained in this state. Her temperature dropped to 22 degrees. At this point the scientists pumped blood into an artery in the direction of the heart and started artificial breathing. After two minutes Keta’s heart became active once more. After fifteen minutes, spontaneous(自发的)breathing began, and after four hours Keta opened her eyes and lifted her head. After six hours, when the scientists tried to give her a penicillin injection, Keta seized the syringe and ran with it around the room. Her behavior differed little from that of a healthy animal.

24For a person who suffers from the clinical death, _________.

A. his most important organs are damaged.

B. he still has the possibility of getting back to life.

C. he cannot avoid final death.

D. he is still very much alive

25Scientists try to make the time of clinical death longer in order to __________.

A. slow down the body’s metabolism.

B. bring vital cells and tissues back to active life.

C. cool the organism.

D. delay the coming of biological death.

26 How did the scientists put Keta into clinical death?

A. By putting her to sleep, lowering her temperature and draining her blood.

B. By surrounding her body with ice-bags and draining her blood.

C. By lowing her blood pressure and stopping her heart from beating.

D. By draining her blood, lowering her blood pressure and stopping her breathing.

27 All of the following indicate that the monkey has almost restored to her original physical state except the fact that__________.

A. her heart beat again.

B. she regained her normal breath.

C. she rejected a penicillin injection.

D. she acted as lively as a healthy monkey.

Throw the bottles and boxes of drugs out of your house. A new theory suggests that medicine could be bad for your health, which should at least come as good news to people who cannot afford to buy expensive medicine. This new theory argues that healing is at our fingertips: we can be healthy by doing Yoga on a regular basis.

Supporters of medical treatment argue that medicine should be trusted since it is effective and scientifically proven. They say that there is no need for spiritual methods such as Yoga. These waste our time, something which is quite precious in our material world. There is medicine that can kill our pain, xrays that show us our bones or MRI that scans our brain for tumors (肿瘤)

We must admit that these methods are very effective in the examples that they provide. However, there are some “everyday complaints” such as back pains, headaches, insomnia, which are treated currently with medicine. When you have a headache, you take an Aspirin; when you cannot sleep, you take Xanax without thinking of the side effects of these. When you use these pills for a long period, you become addicted to them; you cannot sleep without them. We pay huge amounts of money and become addicted instead of getting better. How about a safer and more economical way of healing? When doing Yoga, you do not need anything except your energy so it is very economical. Its popularity has spread particularly throughout America and Western Europe. In quantum (量子) physics, energy is recognized as the fundamental substance (物质) which the universe consists of. Yoga depends on the energy within our bodies. It is a simple and effective way of restoring the energy flow. There are no side effects and it is scientifically explained.

Opponents of alternative healing methods also claim that serious illnesses such as HIV/AIDS and cancer cannot be treated without drugs. They think so because these patients spend the rest of their lives in the hospital taking medicine. How can Yoga make these people healthy again? It is very unfortunate that these patients have to live in the hospital losing their hair because of chemotherapy (化疗), losing weight because of the side effects of the medicine they take. Actually, it is common knowledge that except for when the cancer is recognized at an early stage, drugs also cannot treat AIDS or cancer. Most of the medicines these patients use are to ease their pain and their sufferings. Instead of drugs which are expensive and have many side effects, you can use your energy to overcome the hardships of life, find an emotional balance, leave the stress of everyday life and let go of the everyday worries. We should definitely start learning Yoga and avoid illnesses before it is too late.

Twelve years ago, I arrived in Central Florida from Puerto Rico. I had heard of a job opportunity and decided to pursue it. But it never became a reality. I quickly learned that being alone without resources in an unfamiliar city was not a comfortable situation to be in.

Once my limited funds ran out I became homeless and spent a year and a half living on the streets of Orlando. Apart from feeling not being noticed and missing my family, I had to face another challenge—hunger.

For the first time in my life, I, as a foreign man, who had lived my life in the relative comfort of the middle class, understood the desperation someone feels when they don’t get enough to eat. I clearly remembered having run a distance of more than 7 miles on many occasions just to make it to a local feeding program before they closed at 7 pm.

Once the need for food was met, the next challenge would arise—where to find a place to sleep for the night. Fortunately, local programs like the Coalition for the Homeless, Second Harvest Food Bank and the Wayne Densch Center were an important part of my ability to survive my painful experience.

With the assistance of these programs, I was accepted by a college scholarship program through the Coalition and obtained two degrees from Valencia.

My experience has helped me understand that devoting my life to helping others offers lasting rewards. Today, I am employed as Childhood Hunger Programs Manager at Second Harvest Food Bank and oversee the summer feeding, Hi-Five Kids Pack, and Kids Café programs. I am so proud to be able to distribute food resources to those wonderful programs and help hundreds more like me.

In simple words, hibernation is a state of deep sleep. Hibernation differs from normal sleep in various ways. Hibernating animals take a long time to wake up from their sleep. Turning or kicking their bodies does not seem to wake them up. Even after waking up from hibernation, these animals take some time to restart their normal activities. During hibernation, the heart rate slows down and some of the non-vital organs become entirely inactive. This is a state in which the body uses very little energy.

Winter is the time when food is less and weather rough. Animals have to spend a lot of energy finding food. Even if they succeed in finding anything, it is often not enough to make up for the loss of energy. Besides, the cold weather may often become a cause of death. As a result of all these, animals have to reduce their food demand by reducing energy requirements. This is achieved by hibernating throughout the winter.

Before the onset of winter, when there is plenty of food, animals eat overmuch and store much of the food in the form of fat. As winter arrives, they return to their home where they spend the rest of winter hibernating. As animals hibernate, their body temperature starts dropping due to lack of activity and metabolism(新陈代谢). At one point, it is only a few degrees higher than the surrounding temperature. Whatever energy the body needs to perform certain tasks is got from the fat storage. Due to lack of activity, the fat burning process is slow and steady. The energy from fat is enough to keep the animal alive for the rest of the winter.

Hibernation differs for every species. For example, some animals like black bears may sleep for the whole winter without waking up while animals like, squirrels may wake up every 4 days to eat some food, pass waste matter from the body, and then go back to sleep. Hibernation in domestic animals may differ from that in the wild ones. As there is no food shortage for domestic animals, domestic animals hibernate as a result of their natural instinct but with more active periods in between.

How to Study for a Test or Final

The end of the term is drawing near, and that means final exams are on the way.  36

The most important thing you can do is give yourself plenty of time to prepare. Then follow this plan:

Start Early.

Gather all the material you’ve received during the term. Read through your class notes twice. Some things will sound familiar and some things will sound unfamiliar. That's normal.

Establish a Study Group or Partner.

Schedule at least one meeting time with a study partner or study group. If you can't completely get together, then exchange email addresses. 37

Use Old Tests.

Collect your old exams from the year ( or semester) and make a photocopy of each one. Write out the test answers and copy each one again.

38

To get the best results, you should make several copies of each old exam and keep taking the tests until you score perfectly on each one.

Build up Your Class Notes.

Organize your notes by date and make note of any missing dates/pages. Get together with a study partner or group to compare notes and fill in any missing material. 39 Everybody zones out once in a while. After you organize your new set of notes, underline any key words, formulas, themes, and concepts.

Make yourself a new practice test with fill-in sentences and term definitions. Print out several tests and practice several times. 40 Then exchange.

Make Use of Old Assignments.

Gather some old assignments and redo the exercises. Review those exercises until you can every question easily.

A. Instant messages will work welltoo.

B. Have a set of practice tests.

C. How can you give yourself a chance to improve your scores?

D. You might find one that makes something clear for the first time.

E. Ask the members of your study group to make practice tests as well.

F. Don 't be too surprised if you missed key information from the lectures.

G. Have your friend or study partner raise questions and compare them.
