See a cellphone cover that you like on Taobao? Forget about placing an order, paying the bill online and waiting for days for it to be delivered to you. In the near future, you'll be able to get it in minutes just by hitting “print” on your computer. You might find it hard to believe that you could actually “print” an object like you would a picture. But it is not that hard to understand how it would work. Just as a traditional printer sprays ink onto paper line by line, modern 3D printers spread material onto a surface layer by layer, from the bottom to the top, gradually building up a shape.

Instead of ink, the materials the 3D printer uses are mainly plastic, resin(树脂) and certain metals. The thinner each layer is—from a millimetre to less than the width of a hair—the smoother and finer the object will be. This may sound like a completely new technology, but the truth is that 3D printing has been around since the late 1980s. Back then, it was barely affordable for most people, so few knew about it.

Last year, though, saw a big change in the 3D printing industry—printers became much cheaper. For example, 10 years ago a desktop 3D printer might have cost 20000, while now they cost only about 1000, according to the BBC. Taken out of the factory and introduced to more diverse and common uses, 3D printing can create just about anything you can think of—flutes , bikinis, jewelry, aircraft parts and even human organs. In fact, scientists from Cornell University in New York have just made an artificial ear using a 3D printer, according to Science Daily. The fake ear looks and acts exactly like a natural one.

However, as 3D printing becomes more common, it may bring about certain problems—such as piracy. “Once you can download a coffee maker, or print out a new set of kitchen utensils (餐具) on your personal 3D printer, who will visit a retail store again” an expert in 3D printing told Forbes News. Even more frightening, what if anyone in the world could use a 3D printer to print out a fully functioning gun?

32. According to the article, in the future, the 3D printing technology will _______.

   A. enable people to make better purchases online

Around the world young people are spending unbelievable sums of money listening to rock music. Forbes reports that at least fifty rock stars have incomes between two million and six million dollars per year.

"It doesn't make sense, " says Johnny Mathis, one of the older music millionaires, who made a million dollars a year when he was most popular, in the 1950s. "Performers aren't worth this kind of money. In fact, nobody is. "

But the rock stars 'admirers seem to disagree. Those who love rock music spend about two billion dollars a year for records. They pay 150 million to see rock stars in person.

Luck is a key word for explaining the success of many. In 1972, one of the luckiest was Kon McLean, who wrote and sang "American Pie". McLean writes his own music, so he earns an additional two cents on every single record of the song.

Nell Young, who performs in torn blue jeans, sometimes sings to an audience of 10 000, each of whom has paid at least five dollars for a ticket. After paying expenses, Young leaves with about $ 18 000 in his blue jeans at the end of an evening.

How do the rock stars use their money? What do they do when the money starts pouring in like water? Most of the young stars simply throw the money around. England's Elton John gave someone a $ 38 000 Rolls Royce car and bought himself 5,000 pair of eyeglasses, then lighted up and spelt: E—L—T—O--N. He also bought himself two cars, "one for each foot".

Many rock stars live like Grace Slick and the Jefferson Airplane. Those performers return from a tour, pay their bills, and buy new toys. Then when they need money again, they do another tour. They save no money and live from hand to mouth.

In the end the rock star's life is unrewarding. After two or three years, riches and fame are gone. Left with his memories and his tax problems, the lonely person spends his remaining years trying to attract strangers. New stars have arrived to take his place.

28. This passage is mainly about ________________.

   A. the success of a rock star               B. the way rock stars live

   C. rich rock stars                        D. the admirers of rock stars

29. How much expense does Neil Young pay for a performance?

   A. $ 10,000                B. $ 33,000        C. $ 32,000            D. $ 38,000

30. According to the passage, the underlined phrase “from hand to mouth” means____________.

   A. they have to earn money by hand

   B. they know how to spend money in a reasonable way

   C. they earn money only for their immediate enjoyment

   D. they steal to feed their mouth when they need money

31. What do we know about Johnny Mathis?

   A. He thinks rock stars shouldn’t make much money.

   B. His admires disagree with him totally

   C. He was once popular in the twentieth century

   D. He never spends any money on a rock star’s performance.

Who’s in control of your life? Who is pulling your string? For the majority of us, it’s other people—society, colleagues, friends, family or our religious community. We learned this way of operating when we were very young, of course. We were brainwashed. We discovered that feeling important and feeling accepted was a nice experience and so we learned to do everything we could to make other people like us. As Oscar Wilde puts it, “Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry(模仿), their passions a quotation.”

So when people tell us how wonderful we are, it makes us feel good. We long for this good feeling like a drug. Therefore, we are so eager for the approval of others that we live unhappy and limited lives, failing to do the things we really want to. Just as drug addicts and alcoholics live worsened lives to keep getting their fix (一剂毒品). We worsen our own existence to get our own constant fix of approval.

But, just as with any drug, there is a price to pay. The price of the approval drug is freedom—the freedom to be ourselves. The truth is that we cannot control what other people think. People have their own agenda, and they come with their own baggage and, in the end, they're more interested in themselves than in you. Furthermore, if we try to live by the opinions of others, we will build our life on sinking sand. Everyone has a different way of thinking, and people change their opinions all the time. The person who tries to please everyone will only end up getting exhausted and probably pleasing no one in the process.

So how can we take back control? I think there’s only one way—make a conscious decision to stop caring what other people think. We should guide ourselves by means of a set of values---not values imposed(强加)from the outside by others, but innate values which come from within. If we are driven by these values and not by the changing opinions and value systems of others, we will live a more authentic, effective, purposeful and happy life.

21What Oscar Wilde says implies that _____________.

A. most people’s thoughts are controlled by others

B. most people have a variety of thoughts

C. we have thoughts similar to those of others

D. other people’s thoughts are more important

22What does the author try to argue in the third paragraph ?

A. We need to pay for what we want to get.

B. Changing opinions may cost us our freedom.

C. We may lose ourselves to please others.

D. The price of taking drugs is freedom.

23 In order to live a happy, effective and purposeful life, we should _________.

A. care about others’ opinions and change opinions all the time

B. guide ourselves by means of values from the outside

C. stick to our own values

D. persuade others to accept our opinions

24It can be concluded from the passage that __________.

A. it’s important to accept others’ opinions

B. it’s better to do what we like

C. we shouldn't change our own opinions

D. we shouldn’t care what others think too much

Why does most of the world travel on the right side today? Theories differ, but there's no doubt Napoleon was a major influence. The French have used the right since at least the late 18th century. Some say that before the French Revolution, noblemen drove their carriages on the left, forcing the peasants to the right. Regardless of the origin, Napoleon brought right-hand traffic to the nations he conquered, including Russia, Switzerland and Germany. Hitler, in turn, ordered right-hand traffic in Czechoslovakia and Austria in the 1930s. Nations that escaped right-hand control, like Great Britain, followed their left-hand tradition.

The U.S. has not always been a nation of right-hand drivers; earlier in its history, carriage and horse traffic travelled on the left, as it did in England. But by the late 1700s, people driving large wagons pulled by several pairs of horses began promoting a shift (改变) to the right. A driver would sit on the rear (后面的) left horse in order to wave his whip (鞭子) with his right hand; to see opposite traffic clearly, they travelled on the right.

One of the final moves to firmly standardize traffic directions in the U.S. occurred in the 20th century, when Henry Ford decided to mass-produce his cars with controls on the left ( the reason was stated in a 1908 catalog: the convenience for passengers exiting directly onto the edge, especially if there is a lady to be considered).Once these rules were set, many countries eventually adjusted to the right-hand standard, including Canada in the 1920s, Sweden in 1967 and Burma in 1970.The U.K. and former colonies such as Australia and India are among the Western world's few remaining holdouts(坚持不变者).Several Asian nations, including Japan, use the left as wellthough many places use both right-hand-drive and left-hand-drive cars.

24Why did people in Switzerland travel on the right?

A. They had used the right-hand traffic since the 18th century.

B. Rich people enjoyed driving their carriages on the right.

C. Napoleon introduced the right-hand traffic to this country.

D. Hitler ordered them to go against their left-hand tradition.

25Of all the countries below, the one that travels on the right is ______.

A. Austria   B. England   C. Japan   D. Australia

26Henry Ford produced cars with controls on the left ______.

A. in order to change traffic directions in the U.S.

B. so that passengers could get off conveniently

C. because rules at that time weren't perfect

D. though many countries were strongly against that

27According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?

A. Before the French Revolution, all the French people used the right.

B. People in Britain and the U.S. travel on the same side nowadays.

C. The Burmese began to travel on the right in 1970.

D. All the Asian nations use the left at present.

In the United States of America, the legal voting(选举) age is 18 years. Though some Americans have expressed interest in raising the voting age, saying that these important decisions should not be left in the hands of a teenager, I disagree. I believe that those who are 18 years are ready to take on the responsibility(责任)for voting.

We all know that in the United States, 18 is the age when an individual is considered an adult by the government. Being an adult in the eyes of the law is quite different than simply being a juvenile. Punishments for illegal activities become much heavier. Additionally, at 18, an individual can join the army without receiving permission from his parents to do so. So, when a citizen turns 18, the politics of the country start affecting him in a completely different way. It is unfair to let one lead a severer lifestyle and not allow him any choice in the matter.

Furthermore, by allowing a teenager to vote, we are helping to ensure that he will become more politically minded at a younger age. I didn’t care at all about the politics of my country when I couldn’t vote. As I couldn’t do anything about the politics at the time, I couldn’t see why I should care. It wasn’t until I turned 18 years of age that I started actively trying to understand who ran my government and the way in which it was governed. By allowing 18-year-olds to vote, we are getting them engaged in the world of politics much sooner.

In addition, teenagers today are much smarter than we think. Today’s society is much more technologically advanced than it was in the past. Teenagers have access to all kinds of information through the Internet and their smartphones. So, teenagers have enough knowledge to make good decisions.

Therefore, I think 18 is indeed a proper age to make important political decisions and those who are 18 should be allowed to make important decisions that will affect their nation.

A. child                   B. soldier                   C. teenager                      D. criminal

    B. changed his attitude towards politics

    A. are quick-minded

B. are well-informed

C. can use modern technologies on their own

D. can act according to changing circumstances

31. Which of the following shows the structure of the text_______.

My aunt died back in about 2003. She was eight-four and so was my uncle. When she passed he felt miserable. They had been married for over 60 years. After my aunt’s death, he attended his church more frequently and his morning was nearly unbearable to witness. His only daughter lived across the country in the south so he had only himself to make a comfort.

My cousin talked him into selling the house that he and my aunt had built together about twenty five years before. It was very hard to part with the home they built together. One day he called my cousin who was living in Texas and told her that he reconnected with a lady from a church that he and my aunt went to forty years previously. She played piano and his church was looking for new music. Her husband had died about seven years previously. He said he just wanted someone to go out to dinner with and spend time with. We were happy for them but had no idea how it would turn out. They were both almost eighty-seven years old.

They were like lovebirds and spent as much time together as they could. They both had one child each, she a son, he a daughter.

The clash in their relationship came one day when they neither wanted to leave their respective churches. Before too long they realized that they did not want to be apart. They would find a new church together. They planned to marry. When he took her to a jewelry store and bought her a diamond, the employees were so impressed that they had a big write up in our own local paper, "The Truth for Valentines' Day. They prepared for their wedding. They moved the wedding date up because neither wanted to wait any longer to "be together" .

They got married in her house, where her first marriage took place. It was such a beautiful refreshing thing to see, two people who you would have thought had pretty much lived their lives, were beginning a new one together.

The Sahara Festival is a celebration of the very recent past. The three-day event is not fixed (固定的)to the same dates each year, but generally takes place in November or December. It is well attended by tourists, but even better attended by locals (当地人).

During the opening ceremonies, after the official greetings from the government leaders, people who attend the festival begin to march smartly before the viewing stands, and white camels transport their riders across the sands. Horsemen from different nations display their beautiful clothes and their fine horsemanship. One following another, groups of musicians and dancers from all over the Sahara take their turn to show off their wonderful traditional culture. Groups of men in blue and yellow play horns (喇叭)and beat drums ()as they dance in different designs. On their knees in the sand, a group of women in long dark dresses dance with their hairtheir long, dark, shiny hair is thrown back and forth in the wind to the rhythm of their dance.

The local and visiting Italian dogs are anxious to run after hares. The crowd is on its feet for the camel races. Camels and riders run far into the distance, and then return to the finish line in front of the cheering people.

Towards the evening, there comes the grand finale of the opening day, an extremely exciting horse race. All the riders run very fast on the horseback. Some riders hang off the side of their saddles (座垫).Some even ride upside down ― their legs and feet straight up in the air ― all at full speed.    It is commonly believed that all over the world, boys and girls attend a mixed school, where they study together. But boys' schools are the perfect place to teach young men to express their emotions and involve them in activities such as art, dance and music.

Always boys at single-sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness, rather than feeling they had to correspond to(相符) the "boy code" of hiding their emotions to be a "real man".

Surprisingly, the findings of the study go against received wisdom that boys do better when taught alongside girls.

George Carl, headmaster of Eton, warned that boys were being failed by the British education system because it had become too focused on girls. He criticized teachers for failing to recognize that boys are actually more emotional than girls.

The research argued that boys often perform badly in mixed schools because they become discouraged when girls do better earlier in speaking and reading skills.

But in single-sex schools teachers can adjust lessons to boys' learning style, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom, wrote the study's author, Abigail James, of the University of Virginia.

Teachers could encourage boys to enjoy reading and writing with "boy-focused" approaches such as themes and characters that appeal to them. Because boys generally have more acute vision, learn best through touch, and are physically more active, they need to be given "hands-on" lessons where they are allowed to walk around. "Boys in mixed schools view classical music as feminine(女性的) and prefer the modern genre (类型) in which violence and sexism are major themes," James wrote.

Single-sex education also made it less likely that boys would feel that they had to be "masterful and in charge" in relationships. "In mixed schools, boys feel forced to act like men before they understand themselves well enough to know what that means," the study reported.

28. The writer argues that a single-sex school would __________.

A. encourage boys to express their emotions more freely

B. help boys to be more competitive in schools.

    D. naturally strengthen boys’ traditional image of a man

    A. behave more responsibly.                                B. perform relatively better.

    C. grow up more healthily.                             D. receive a better education.

30. In Abigail James’ opinion, one of the advantages of single-sex schools is ______.

    A. boys can choose to learn whatever they are interested in

    B. boys can focus on their lessons without being distracted

    C. teaching can be adjusted to suiting the characteristics of boys

    D. teaching can be designed to promote boys' team spirit

The Spring Festival, as one of the grandest and most important festivals, is supposed to be a time for the whole families to reunite together. However, as people’s enthusiasm for digital hongbao increased, the amount of the time they spend with family members during the holiday decreases. There has been widespread criticism(批评) over digital hongbao that it has given rise to a wide berth to family reunion.

“ I used to discuss programs in the Spring Festival Gala(春晚) with my family members , but this year , I hardly had the time to watch the gala because I was staring at my cellphone all the time,” said Kang , a 30 –year old radio station editor. “ I went to Karaoke with my cousins during the holiday, and I was grasping digital hongbao the whole time, even when I was singing Karaoke.”

“Next year, I will still play the game, but with less money and for a smaller amount of time,” Kang said.

Dong Chenyu, a teacher from Beijing Foreign Studies University, said it unfair to blame hongbao for destroying family reunion.

“When television was invented, people accused it of standing in the way of face-to-face human communication. The same accusation came up on telephone and text message services when they were first invented. The same goes with digital hongbao,” Dong said.

“It does nothing but offers a new way of human communication. The rest is people’s choice. As long as no one expects to earn money from this and takes this as a means of gambling(赌博), it’s a good way to improve human connections,” Dong said.
