"Good morning, Min!" Miss Lydia said, looking happily to see me. "Hello, Miss Lydia. Won't you come in?" I said, remembering my best manners. Miss Lydia came in, joined us in the breakfast table, but said to my dad that he would like both of us be her models in one of her books. What a great news! I would finally get to be in a book! I jumped off my chair and run to give Miss Lydia a big hug.

Many years ago, a baby boy came into this world. But 21 , he didn’t come with a cry, which was a big 22 from the medical point of view. The doctor turned the baby 23 and slapped his bottom sharply. The baby cried and 24 . The father smiled and silently cried 25 . He held the baby in his arms and didn’t allow the doctor to touch the baby anymore... That baby was me, and that man was my dad.
Dad never tried to hug or kiss me when I was a child. And 26 , he never said “I love you” to me, either. Maybe it’s a Chinese cultural thing, or maybe that’s the way my dad was. But 27 I felt defeated, sad or lonely, dad was always there. He was a man of 28 words, but I could always feel a very special 29 to him.

One night, I couldn’t 34 it any more and shouted, “Dad, could you stop selling your 35 noodles? I don’t need a father who sells noodles on the street!” At that moment, dad was 36 . It was the first time that I saw dad 39 . My mom later told me that dad was selling noodles to save money for my college education. I was such an idiot, and even today I still feel 40 for that night.

Our quarrel with efficiency is not that it gets things done, but that it is a thief of time when it leaves us no leisure to enjoy ourselves, and that it strains our nerves when we try to get things done perfectly. In building bridges, American engineers calculate so finely and exactly as to make the two ends come together within one-tenth of an inch. But when two Chinese begin to dig a tunnel from both sides of a mountain both come out on the other side. --The Chinese’s firm belief is that it doesn’t matter so long as a tunnel is dug through, and if we have two instead of one, why, we have a double track to boot.
The pace of modern industrial life forbids this kind of glorious and magnificent idling. But, worse than that, it imposes upon us a different conception of time as measured by the clock and eventually turns the human being into a clock himself. (This sort of thing is bound to come to China, as is evident, for instance, in the case of a factory of twenty thousand worker. The luxurious prospect of twenty thousand workers coming in at their own sweet pleasure at all hours is, of course, somewhat terrifyi
ng.)Nevertheless, such efficiency is what makes life so hard and full of excitement. A man who has to be punctually at a certain place at five o’clock has the whole afternoon from one to five ruined for him already. Every American adult is arranging his time on the pattern of the schoolboy - three o’clock for this, five o’clock for that, six-thirty for change of dress, six-fifty for entering the taxi, and seven o’clock for arriving at the destination. It just makes life not worth living.

A. entitles us to too much leisure time B. deprives us of leisure time
C. urges us to get things done punctually D. imposes on us a perfect concept of time

B. Americans ought not to work so hard for efficiency
C. Chinese engineers are on better terms with the management

35. What is implied but NOT stated by the author is that ____.
A. every American is arranging his time in the pattern of a schoolboy
B. every American is reluctant to be efficient
C. every one should have some time to spend as he pleases
D. being punctual is an undesirable habit which should not be formed

Mr. Harris used to work in Dover, but then he changed his work, and he and his wife moved to another town. They did not have many friends there, but they soon met a lot of interesting people, and after a few weeks, they often went to dinner or to parties at other people’s houses.
Then Mrs. Harris said to her husband, “We’ve been to a lot of other people’s houses, and now we must invite them to our house, mustn’t we?”
“Yes, certainly,” answered her husband, “A big party will be the easiest thing, won’t it? Then we can start to invite people to dinner in small numbers next month.”
So Mrs. Harris said, “Yes, I’ll invite all our friends here to a big party on 5th December.”
“How many will that be?” Mr. Harris asked. “Don’t invite too many.”
Mrs. Harris was beginning to write the invitations when her husband saw that she was writing, “Party: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.”
“That isn’t very nice, is it?” he said. “You’re telling our guests that they must go at 8:30.” So Mrs. Harris just wrote “Party: 6:30 p.m.”
A lot of guests came, and they all had a good time, so they did not go home at 8:30. In fact they were still there at mid-night when the door bell rang and a policeman arrived. He said, “You must stop making a noise, because someone has complained(抱怨).”
Mr. Harris said he did not want to quarrel with the policeman, so everyone went home. They were sorry to have to go.

When I first started university, I remembered hearing about bone marrow(骨髓)donation during Freshman’s Week. Some students volunteers from a group called Marrow tried to convince me to attend an event so I could learn more about it. The word “bone” immediately made me think that donating would be a painful procedure, so I refused. Back then, there was no way I could have known three years later, I would be one of the many people that desperately needs a bone marrow donor to save their lives.
I am currently waiting to be matched with a donor and if I am lucky enough to find a good match, it will be this lovely stranger that saves my life. I received my cancer diagnosis in June. It is only at that time that I realized how ignorant I had been about the bone marrow donation process.
The process of donating stem cells is actually very simple. In 90% of cases, donors are asked to donate their blood stem cells, the other 10% will give their bone marrow. Lots of donors say that both these things are virtually pain free, and nothing to be scared about. Being a bone marrow donor should be something to be proud of, as every donor has an opportunity to save someone’s life!
At the moment I know that the doctors are busy searching for a match, I simply live every day in the hope that there will be a donor right for me. If I have an opportunity for life, I won’t waste it.
When I was a first year at university, I made the mistake of walking away from becoming a stem cell donor. Please don’t make the same mistake that I did. There are so many people out there, including myself, that need your help; and by undergoing a simple, pain-free procedure, you could have the chance to proudly say that you saved someone’s life.
24. Why did the author refuse to learn more about bone marrow donation before?

B. Because she thought that donating would be painful.

26. The author needs the bone marrow because she got
A. cancer B. headache C. flu D. high blood pressure
27. The author told us her story to .
A. show us the experience of her college life.
B. explain the cause of her cancer.

"
For those of us who want to make a(n) 59 in the world,it's important we remember what Bucky Fuller said,”Think globally ,but act 60.”For me,I’m going to make it point to meet more of my neighbors-staring now.
