“We leave at dawn and head out overland by jeep towards Base One. We will get as far as we can before proceeding on foot,” Mark explained. The others sat and listened. Sarah, particularly, as a “casualty of events”, wouldn't have known what to say or suggest even if she’d been asked. But Harry had a lot to say.

“We'll never make it," he protested(抗议). “We'll still be crossing the desert when they catch up with us. They’ll know where we’re heading for and they seem to know every move we make or are going to make.”

Mark said nothing, but spread his hands out as if to say “Well, what do we do then?” “We wouldn’t be in this mess now,” Harry went on, almost ignoring Mark’s gesture, “if we hadn't stopped to rescue Sarah.”( He glanced at her briefly.) “But since we did, we must get on—but not across the desert. There is the sand, and deep ravines (沟壑) which are almost invisible until you’re right on them and then the heat. You have to be used to going out there, and none of us is. This is no ‘morning at leisure’ on some pleasant holiday, you know! If we went north instead and made for the river,…"

He broke off and looked around at the others, feeling somehow that his argument was pointless. No one said anything.

When I was nine years old, I loved to go fishing with my dad. But the only thing that wasn’t very fun about it was that he could catch many fish while I couldn’t catch anything. I usually got pretty upset and kept asking him why. He always answered, “Son, if you want to catch a fish, you have to think like a fish”, I remember being even more upset then because, “I’m not a fish!” I didn’t know how to think like a fish. Besides, I reasoned, how could what I think influence what a fish does
As I got a little older I began to understand what my dad really meant. So, I read some books on fish. And I even joined the local fishing club and started attending the monthly meetings. I learned that a fish is a cold-blooded animal and therefore is very sensitive to water temperature. That is why fish prefer shallow water to deep water because the former is warmer. Besides, water is usually warmer in direct sunlight than in the shade. Yet, fish don’t have any eyelids(
眼皮) and the sun huts their eyes… The more I understood fish, the more I became effective at finding and catching them..
When I grew up and entered the business world, I remember hearing my first boss say, “We all need to think like sales people.” But it didn’t completely make sense. My dad never once said, “If you want to catch a fish you need to think like a fisherman.” What he said was, “You need to think like a fish.” Years later, with great efforts to promote long-term services to people much older and richer than me, I gradually learned what we all need is to think more like customers. It is not an easy job. I will show you how in the following chapters.

I was going through my son Matthew’s backpack when I saw an envelope in the bottom of it. Immediately, I knew it was a “thank you” card from one of his    36   . Totally not necessary since my Christmas gifts to them are my way of saying, “Thank you”. I   37   I read it quickly. And then I stopped.

I    38    the card and read it again. One word caught my attention. “I love working with our Matthew.” One word. Our. That one word    39    the meaning of the sentence for me. If she had written “I love working with Matthew”, I would know that she loves working with my son.

Each person had a unique little    50    to tell about Matthew. Stories that show that they really know who Matthew is and that they    51    him.

In fact just today I had written a note in his communication book that it was    52    Matthew to see new snow and not be able to play in it. Later in the day I got an email and a picture of Matthew    53    with snow in a big container inside the school.

As I was reflecting on this, I realized that as a family we are really lucky    54    school isn’t the only place where they think of him as “our Matthew”. It    55    to other parts of our lives as well — our friends, our family, our neighborhood, and our church.

My late(已故的) father was a great believer in reading newspapers the first thing in the morninga habit he passed down to me.

Every dayI need newsfeatures and comicsalong with the smell of printing inkwith breakfasteven if I have searched the Internet earlier in the morning. When I sit down to eat my breadthe newspaper has to be there. When it is latemy wife says I look lost.

Some need coffee in the morning. I need the newspaperexcept when I’m on vacation. ThenI trade the routine for coffeeunless the hotel hangs a newspaper on my door.

Howeverthe sword of Damocles(达摩克利斯之剑) hangs over my routine—a day may come when there won’t even be a newspaper. My younger friends insist this is the way newspapers will go. Maybe not in five or ten yearsmaybe it will take 20 years but the future of newspapers is unsure.

My younger friends rarely read the print media these days. They want their news either onscreen or in a coolsmall package they can take anywhere and read at any time. They insist we’re now in the twilight(衰退期) of the newspaper business and the iPad may help to end it. Such a future is not something I like. Surethere’s the Internet but it’s just not the same.

So here’s a little exercise for those who don’t want to read the newspapers any more. Buy onefind a quiet corner at home and spare an hour without distractions. Harvard dares us to dream big to aspire(渴求) to change the world. Here on this Commencement Day, we are probably thinking of grand destination and big adventures that await ourselves. My experience here reminded me how important it is for researchers to communicate our knowledge to those who need it. But that’s an impact every one of us can make!More than never before, our society emphasizes science and innovation. But an equalimportant emphasis should be on distributing knowledge we have to where it’s needed. Change the world doesn’t mean that everyone has to find the next big thing. It can be as simple as becoming better communicators, and finding more creative ways to pass on to the knowledge we have to people in their local community. Our society also needs to recognize that the equal distribution of knowledge is a pivotal(关键) step of human development, and work to bring this into real.
