Getting Along Well With Parents

Getting along well with parents is a big problem for most teenagers. Teenagers are gradually getting more mature---or at least they think they are. So they can’t wait to get themselves free from their so—called bondage. Their parents are in their 40s and they are annoyed by their aging.    36   . But people prefer harmony. How can we achieve it? Here are some tips:

First and foremost,     37   . We can’t be sure if we are created by God, yet people worship him, but we are absolutely sure that our parents created us. Isn’t a good enough reason why we should respect them?

What’s more,     38    We can’t just take their payment for granted or become apathetic to their kindness. We are always impressed by strangers’ occasional kindness. How can we be insensitive to our parents who worry about us all the time?

In addition, don’t forget to communicate with your parents.    39   . For example, they may read our private diaries or follow us everywhere even to the bathroom. This will definitely cause strife in the family.

Last but not the least,      40    . It may be difficult at first, but once you do it, your parents’ actions will suddenly be clear.

If parents and teenagers work a little more we can all get something back.

A. we need to switch places with our parents.

B. As we get older, we begin to realize that our parents are not as perfect as we thought.

C. That’s why people say families at this time are a confrontation between adolescence

and the climacteric.

D. we must respect our parents from the bottom of our heart.

E. Gradual disappointment with patents is, in some degree, inevitable.

F. If we refuse to communicate with them, parents will fell so frustrated that they will do anything they can to know us.

G. it’s important to be grateful to our parents.

Instagram is containing so many photos of food ---now a pop-up diner in London is taking advantage of this new trend by letting people settle the bill for their meals simply by uploading Photos of their dishes to social networks.

I always thought people's taking pictures of their food was kind of silly, but at this new pop-up restaurant in the UK. I'd probably do it too. The Picture House' is the world's first pay-by-photo restaurant---you order, click a photo of the food, share on Instagram and cat for free!

The restaurant belongs to frozen food giant Birds Eye, who came up with the idea to cash in on people's addiction to photographing food and sharing the pictures online. They conducted a survey and found that more than half of the British population regularly took pictures of their meals. So they realized it was a better way to advertise their new dining range.

The pop-up diner was open in Soho, London for three days in May, and is now moving lo other major UK cities. They serve two-course meals that customers don't have to pay for. if they photo and Instagram it.

The restaurant is a part of Birds Bye's 'Food for Life' campaign, a new marketing project that aims at changing the people look at frozen food. "Taking photos of food enables people to show off and to share their mealtime moments---from the everyday to the special," said marketing director Margaret Jobling.

The reaction to The Picture House has b«n great so far. And the pay-by-picture concept has proven to be an effective way. Alternative payment methods are actually gaining popularity among a lot of businesses. Last year, in a cafe in Germany customers paid by how much time they spend there, not by what they eat.

The Nez Perce Indians are a tribe that lived in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. At the time of the Lewis and Clark expedition (远征队),which was one of the first journeys by Americans from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific coast and back again, the Nez Perce territory (领土)covered about 17 million acres, covering parts of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. But that was a brief sweet history.

In September 1805when Lewis and Clark came off the Rockies on their westward journey, the entire exploring party was hungry and ill too  weak      to defend themselves.

Clark expedition there on the banks of Clearwater River. Instead the Nez Perce welcomed the white Americans and looked after them until they made a full recovery. Thus began a long friendship between the Nez Perce and white Americans. But white men ’ s greed for land and gold finally broke the friendship.

In 1855 Governor Isaac Stevens of Washington Territory invited the Nez Perce to a peace conference. He said there were a great many white people in the country, and many more would come. But the chief of the tribe at that time, Old Joseph, replied, “Take away your paper. I will not touch it with my hand. ”

Things were quiet for a while after thatbut     not for long.  When Old Joseph diedthe

chiefship was passed onto Young Joseph. In the late 1870sgovernment officials came to order the Nez Perce to leave the Wallowa Valley and then began hard battles between the Nez Perce and the white soldiers. After the tribe had fought thirteen battles and moved 1 ,600 miles towards Canada in an attempt to retreat (撤退)north, Young Joseph, gave in to the United States Army. Here was his famous statement, Hear me my chiefs. I am tired my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever. ”

He said that as a teenager he didn’t have much self-esteem, but acting gave him confidence. “It was when they started saying I could do it (26) __________ I really committed to it as a possibility,” he continued. However, his father did not approve, believing his polite and bright son should be using his brains for (27) __________ else. “You’ve been educated, so why do you want to spend your life pretending to be someone else when you could be your own man?” the father told the son.

The Owl Count

Annie slept in the front of the seat with her father drove through the darkness. “We’re almost there!” Dad announced cheerfully. “Soon we’ll be observing and counting owls at the state park.” Yawning, Annie nodded and smiled. The time was 4:30 a.m. Looking out into the darkness, Annie remembered learning in school that most owls are active at night, when they hunt for food. During the day they sleep in hard-to-find spots.

“Dad, why do you need to count owls?” she asked. “It’s important for the scientists to have current information about bird populations,” he explained. “We want to know which birds have decreased in number and whether any new kinds of birds are coming into a certain area. You and I will write down the kinds of birds that we see today and keep a record of how many times we see each kind. Then we’ll send out a report to a scientific organization that is collecting about birds from people all over the country.”

Dad pulled into the parking lot of the state park. Then, with flashing in hand, they began their hike into the woods. Annie zipped up her coat and tried to keep from trembling. She had not expected the morning to be so cold. Luckily her gloves were in her pocket.

Suddenly Annie’s father stopped and gestured for her to be still. Obeying, Annie did not take another step. She thought she heard a low crying up head. “That’s certainly a screech owl,” her father whispered. “Let’s get a look at it.” After looking more closely, Annie could see that it was a small owl. Sensing danger, the owl narrowed its eyes and pulled its feathers tightly against its body. Annie carefully wrote down in her notebook that they had seen a screech owl.

Walking a little farther, they came to a tall oak tree. “This looks like a perfect spot to attract owls,” Dad said, “I’m going to play a recording of common call of the barred owl. Maybe we can get one to answer.’ Annie could hardly believe her ear. The recorded call sounded as if the bird were asking, “Who cooks for you?” Moments later Annie thought she heard a return call in the distance. She held her breath and waited. Suddenly a huge bird landed very quietly on a branch above them.

Annie had long forgotten how cold it was. She stood in wonder, shining her flashlight on the bird and studying it carefully. The barred owl was nearly two feet tall. Grey feathers surrounded its dark eyes. The bird did not stay long, but it did not matter. Annie would never forget the image of the powerful barred owl.

25. Why did Annie and her father go to the state park?

A. To take a hike in the woods.

B. To record the call of barred owl.

C. To collect information about birds.

D. To protect the environment for wildlife.

26. In paragraph 4, why did Annie’s father stop her suddenly?

A. He noticed a screech owl.

B. He heard somebody crying.

C. He sensed they were in danger.

D. He reminded her to take down note.

27. How did Annie feel when she saw the barred owl?

A. Bored                B. Amazed             C. Frightened                D. Relaxed

Here are some tips on how to keep youyour belongings and your money safe during traveling. After allit'd be a shame to spend all that time finding the best price for your triponly to lose your cash and credit cards to a thief.

Don't let others know that you are new here.

You're a tourist. You know thatbut you don't want anybody else to know that. Don't unfold your big map on a busy corner. Don't ask strangers on the street for directions. Learn your route ahead of timeand step into a business for directions whenever possible. Avoid flashing your Lonely Planet guidebook aroundor publicly referring to your language dictionary when traveling abroad.

Keep your friends close and your money closer.

A lone traveler equals easy pickings for a seasoned criminal. If you are traveling alonetry to hide that fact. Stick with groups whenever possible and  keep information sharing with chatty cab drivers and the like to a minimum.

Another thing you don't want to advertisewhere you keep your money. A fanny pack(腰包) may be convenientbut it means “I'm not from around here” If you have a pursekeep it close to your bodypreferably under an item of clothing like a jacket or a sweater so that thieves can't steal it. Be sure that your wallet is in a securely fastened pocket. Or go like 007 with a hidden money belt. How cool is that?

Be carefuleven in your hotel room.

Never blindly answer a knock at your door. If the knocker identifies himself as a hotel employeecall the front desk to confirm. Always make sure your hotel door completely closes when entering or exiting.

Don't leave your valuables lying around when you leave for the day. That hotel safe is there for a reason!

8Why shouldn't tourists wear a fanny pack?

ABecause it shows that you are not a person around here.

BBecause it is not convenient.

CBecause it can't be hidden under your jacket.

DBecause it can't hide money.

9Why does the author mention 007's money belt?

ATo persuade readers to learn from 007.

BTo persuade readers to buy the belt worn by 007.

CTo persuade tourists to hide money in their belt.

DTo persuade tourists not to show others where you keep your money.

10Who is this passage written for?

ALocals.      BTourists.

CHotel owners.     DThieves.

11Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

AWhen traveling abroadyou shouldn't open your language dictionary in public areas.

Teenagers who sit down to family meals are less likely to be depressed or take risks with drugs and alcohol, new research shows.

A new study looking at the role of family meals in the health and wellbeing of young people is the first study on the issue in New Zealand. It uses data collected nationally from more than 9,000 secondary school pupils. It finds that those who eat with their families frequently are less likely to report suicidal(自杀的)thoughts, less likely to be smokers and less likely to indulge in drinking, drugs and so on. It says social changes such as more television channels, more mothers working and cheap fast food have changed the status of the family meal.

However, the good news for New Zealand is that one-third of young people reported sharing meals with their families seven or more times a week and an additional 40 percent shared meals three to six times a week.

Author Jennifer Utter, a senior lecturer at Auckland University, said sitting down for dinner created an opportunity for parents to check in with children and see how their day had been. Young people who ate with their parents reported better connectedness and better communication. Family meals indicate strong, healthy relationships. The high proportion of families eating together was encouraging, she said. “A lot of families do seem to want to spend time together. It’s a really positive finding.”

Previously a household would have only one breadwinner and there would always be someone at home for children to talk to. Nowadays, it often took the income of two people to keep the family afloat(能维持下去)and it would be harder for parents to have dinner with their children. Chief families commissioner Carl Davidson said teens who ate meals with their families reported better health, and were less likely to be depressed. “We probably all know that eating together is worthwhile, but this research shows that those shared meals aren’t just nice to have but are actually a fundamental contributor to family wellbeing.”

13. Why is it more difficult for parents to have dinner with their children?

    A. Because children are busy with their study.

    B. Because eating as family can make them put on weight.

    C. Because the meals cooked at home are not as delicious as fast food.

    D. Because parents have to earn money to support the whole family.

14. What do the underlined words “indulge in” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A. be tired of      B. be fit for         C. be addicted to      D. be content with

15. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

    A. Eating as family aids teens’ health.     B. Eating as family helps teens lose weight.

C. Eating as family saves much energy.    D. Eating as family benefits parents.

How Technology Can Help Language Learning

Intelligence, according to Howard Gardner, is of eight typesverbal-linguistic, logical-mathematical, musical-rhythmic, visual-spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalistic. This is the first in a series of posts that explore and understand how each of the above forms of intelligence is affected by technology-mediated education.

Verbal-linguistic Intelligence involves sensitivity to spoken and written language, the ability to learn languages, and the capacity to use language to accomplish goals. Such intelligence is developed by three specific activities: reading, writing and interpersonal communicationboth written and oral. The traditional tools that have been used to efficiently develop verbal/linguistic intelligencetextbook, pencil, and paperare giving way to technology in many schools. E-books, Internet lesson plans, online assignments and word processing software, or a subset of the above, are now common in schools. Technology allows addition of multisensory (多种感觉的) elements that provide meaningful contexts to help comprehension, thus expanding the learning ground of language and linguistics.

Research into the effect of technology on the development of the language and literacy skills vis-à-vis reading activities of children has offered evidence for favorable effects of digital-form books. A study shows that digital reading materials have become common in developing countries in early childhood classrooms to support engagement in storybooks while enhancing the emergent literacy (早期读写能力) among children. E-books are also being increasingly used to teach reading among beginners and children with reading difficulties.

Technology can be used to improve reading ability in many ways. It can enhance (加强) and sustain the interest levels for children by allowing immediate feedback on performance and providing added practice when necessary. Recent research shows that students are able to improve their sight word vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension through computer-based reading.

Technology can also help in improvement of writing skills. Word processing software promotes not only composition but also editing and revising in ways that streamline the task of writing. Desktop publishing and web-based publishing allow the work to be taken beyond the classroom into a virtual world that allows more constructive interactions.

Technology enhanced oral communication is indeed useful in that it allows students from remote locations, or from all over the world to communicate orally through video and audio conferencing tools. For example, students of languages in Australian universities overcome the problem of insufficient contact with native language speakers by using online audio and video tools that allow the development of aural, vocal and visual-cognition skills that are important in verbal and linguistic education. Oral group discussions in the form of video conferencing can help non-native speakers of a language with natural language negotiation and cultural intonations in ways that have not been possible due to geographic isolation.

Computer definitely aided language learning and computer mediated communication enhance teaching and learning experiences in the areas of linguistics and language intelligence. Although there have not been comprehensive studies on the use of technologies to aid K-12 English-language learners, there have been many individual computer programs and other technologies that accelerate the acquisition of phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and reading-comprehension skills and other language building blocks.

Dickenss Grip, who had an impressive vocabulary, appears as a character in the authors fifth novel, Barnaby Rudge On 28 January 1841, Dickens wrote to his friend George Cattermole: my notion is to have [Barnaby] always in company with a pet raven, who is immeasurably more knowing than himself To this end I have been studying my bird, and think I could make a very distinctive character of him.”

Unfortunately, just a few weeks after Dickens wrote that letter, Grip died, probably as a result of having stolen and eaten paint some months earlier The bird had developed a strange habit tearing sections off painted surfaces (including the family's carriage) and even drinking a quantity of white paint out of a tin Dickens mourned his loss and wrote a humorous letter to his friend, the illustrator Daniel Maclise, about the ravens death

He related how, when Grip began to show signs of sickness, the vet was called and administered a powerful dose of castor(蓖麻) oil”. When something goes wrongit can be very satisfying to say”Well, it’s so-and-so’s fault.” or “I know I’m latebut it’s not my faultthe car broke down.”It is probably not your faultbut once you form the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situationyou are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how to remedy the situation. This is the winner’s key to success.

Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example, if you were late because your car broke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. Or, you might start to carry along with you the useful phone numbers, so you could call for help when in need. For another example, if your colleague causes you problems on the job for lack of responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a different person, or don’t rely on this person. You should accept that the person is not reliable and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of how your colleague fails to do his job well.

This is what being a winner is all about—creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don’t have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and opportunities to develop their own talents. So, stop focusing on “whose fault it is.” Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stone for success.

People always think men are more skilled than women in driving. Nowadays women appear to have a positive image of themselves as safer drivers than men.

In a survey done for insurer MetLife, 51% of women said they drive more safely. The evidence is on their side: Men are 3.4 times more likely than women to get a ticket for careless driving and 3.1 times as likely to be punished for drunk driving. “Women are on average less aggressive and more law abiding (守法的) drivers, which leads to fewer accidents.” the report says. However, not all male drivers share the same opinion. Of the men surveyed by MetLife, 39% claimed male drivers were safer. The findings did back them up on one point: automotive knowledge. The report showed that more men are familiar with current safety equipment such as electronic stability control, which helps prevent rollover accidents.

Auto safety unavoidably matters to money. Insurance companies focus on what classes of drivers have the lowest dollar amounts of claims, and for now, that mainly includes women. In general, women pay about 9% less for auto insurance than men. A study by the website Insweb also showed that auto insurance rates are lower for women in most states. Among individual states, women get the greatest advantage in Wyoming (where they pay 20% less), South Dakota and Washington, D. C., where their insurance costs are 16% lower.

“More than 11,900 male drivers died in U.S. traffic accidents in 2009, compared with just under 4,900 women drivers,” according to the study. “Based on miles traveled, men died at a rate of 2.5 deaths per 100 million miles traveled, v.s. 1.7 deaths for women.”
