In 2006,Paul Letourneau of Worcester,Mass, lost his parents, his home and his pet dog.And that August, his lifelong mild depression took a turn for the worse as he became suicidal(有自杀倾向的).

“I said I didn't want to be alive anymore,”Letourneau,67,recalled telling his best friend.

Fixed or growth mindset — which do you have?

We live in an uncertain world with all the technological advances we are experiencing, which meanse is a requirement for a change in midset (思维模式). In order to be on top of our game both personally and organizationally, we need to develop a growth mindset.

A fixed mindset supposes that you have native abilities and are naturally clever or skilled in certain areas of life. When you receive infonnation about how you have performed in a test or set of tasks t you may worry about how you are judged. Our parents probably said to us when we were young,"Since you scored really well in the test, you must  be clever." However, by being repeatedly told “You are clever” or “You are really good at your job”,a person's self—respect is actually dainagcd.

The  growth—mindset  person a view life as a series of exciting challenges and  want  to constantly  learn. Brain activity occurs in this mindset when they receive information about what they could do belter or improve. They do not view their abilities as fixed or us failure. Learning is king and the more they practice , the more they know they will succeed.

What is important is giving praise around process and not around ability. For example , instead of saying"Since you got a great score, you must be clever" f say " You got a great score, and you must have tried really hard". This creates challenge in individuals and the meaning of mindsets is massive for business. Fixed-mindset managers are not fans of giving feedback (反馈). They do not want to stretch themselves or others because they fear failure. Therefore their business may stand still because there is no risk or innovation (创新) occurring.

Listen from your own fixed mindset — for example ," I can't  do that” — and answer with a growth-mindset response — “I can't do that yet!" Remember  there is no such thing as failure and there is s only learning. If you don't fail occasionally ,you will never learn to change and grow.

  1. (1) What is the author's opinion of people' s mindsets?

A . A growth mindstet means no failure. B . People need develop a fixed mindset. C . A fixed mindset focuses more on process. D . People should develop a growth mindest.
  2. (2) Which judgment seems more encouraging?

A . You are clever. B . You are skillful. C . You have worked hard. D . You arc great at your job.
  3. (3) What do the growth-mindset  persons most advocate?

A . Keeping on learning. B . Viewing ability as failure. C . Giving praise around ability. D . Learning from the fixed mindset.
  4. (4) What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

A . Always stay in ihe same mindset B . Think and act in different mindsets. C . We can 't miss the chance of failure. D . Learning is the key to success from failure.

I really love my job because I enjoy working with small children and like the challenges and awards from the job. I also think my work is important. There was a time when I thought I would never have that sort of career.

I wasn't an excellent student because I didn't do much schoolwork. In my final term I started thinking what I might do and found I didn't have much to offer. I just accepted that I wasn't the type to have a career.

I then found myself a job — looking after two little girls. It wasn't too bad at first. But the problems began when I agreed to live in so that I would be there if my boss had to go out for business in the evening. We agreed that if I had to work extra hours one week, she'd give me time off the next. But unfortunately, it didn't often work out. I was getting extremely tired and fed up, because I had too many late nights and early mornings with the children.

One Sunday, I was in the park with the children, and met Megan who used to go to school with me. I told her about my situation. She suggested that I should do a course and get a qualification(资格证书)if I wanted to work with children. I didn't think I would be accepted because I didn't take many exams in school. She persuaded me to phone the local college and they were really helpful. My experience counted for a lot and I got on a part-time course. I had to leave my job with the family, and got work helping out at a kindergarten.

Now I've got a full-time job there. I shall always be thankful to Megan. I wish I had known earlier that you could have a career, even if you aren't top of the class at school.

  1. (1) What is the author's present job?

A . Working part-time in a college. B . Taking care of children for a family. C . Helping children with their schoolwork. D . Looking after children at a kindergarten.
  2. (2) When staying with the two girls' family, the author ________.

A . was paid for extra work B . often worked long hours C . got much help from her boss D . took a day off every other week
  3. (3) Why did the author leave her first job?

A . She found a full-time job. B . She was fed up with children. C . She decided to attend a part-time course. D . She needed a rest after working extra hours.
  4. (4) What has the author learned from her own experiences?

A . Less successful students can still have a career. B . Qualifications are necessary for a career. C . Hard work makes an excellent student. D . One must choose the job one likes.

One of the main challenges facing many countries is how to maintain their identity in the face of globalization and the growing multi-language trend. "One of the main reasons for economic failure in many African countries is the fact that, with a few important exceptions, mother-tongue education is not practiced in any of the independent African states." said Neville Alexander, Director of the Project for the Study of Alternative Education in South Africa at the University of Cape Town.

In response to the spread of English and the increased multi-language trends arising from immigration, many countries have introduced language laws in the last decade. In some, the use of languages other than the national language is banned in public spaces such as advertising posters. One of the first such legal provisions(规定) was the 1994 "Toubon law" in France, and the idea has been copied in many countries since then. Such efforts to govern language use are often considered as futile by language experts, who are well aware of the difficulty in controlling fashions in speech and know from research that language switching among bilinguals is a natural process.

It is especially difficult for native speakers of English to understand the desire to maintain the "purity" of a language by law. Since the time of Shakespeare, English has continually absorbed foreign words into its own language. English is one of the most mixed and rapidly changing languages in the world, but that has not been a barrier to acquiring superiority and power. Another reason for the failure of many native English speakers to understand the role of the state regulation is that it has never been the Anglo-Saxon way of doing things. English has never had a state-controlled authority for the language, similar, for example, to the Academic Francaise in France.

The need to protect national languages is, for most western Europeans, a recent phenomenon—especially the need to ensure that English does not unnecessarily take over too many fields. Public communication, education and new ways of communication promoted by technology, may be key fields to defend.

  1. (1) Neville Alexander believes that __________.

A . mother-tongue education is not practiced in all African countries B . globalization has resulted in the economic failure of Africa C . globalization has led to the rise of multi-language trend D . lack of mother-tongue education can lead to economic failure
  2. (2) The underlined word "futile" (in paragraph 2) most probably means " ___________".

    A . workable B . practical C . useless D . unnecessary

A . English has taken over fields like public communication and education. B . Many aspects of national culture are threatened by the spread of English. C . Most language experts believe it is important to promote a national language. D . Europeans have long realized the need to protect a national language.

How do you enter a room full of strangers? Do you walk right in full of confidence? Or do you try to slip in without being noticed?

In life, we admire those who do their tasks confidently. We prefer people who appear to know what they're doing. But where does that confidence begin?

Developing self-confidence starts very early. It's the parents' role to get kids on the right track towards becoming confident people.  When children make mistakes, their parents should still let them know that they are loved. Children whose parents do these things will likely develop into confident adults. But self-confidence still doesn't come easily. So what's the solution?

With most things in life, practice makes perfect, and that is true of confidence skills.

Always hold your head high and look people in the eye.

Answer questions clearly and confidently. The way you walk shows others how confident you are.

Focus on the things that you do well, and look for opportunities to use those abilities.

You'll approach the task more confidently knowing that you're ready.

All humans fail at times, and you will too.  Learning from mistakes helps you face the same situation later without fear.

A. Prepare thoroughly for every project.

B. But don't allow mistakes to trouble you.

C. Even with practice, you will never be perfect.

D. Parents are often good teachers for their own children.

E. The more you practise them, the easier they will become.

F. The way you go into new situations shows your level of self-confidence.

G. To help that process, parents should always offer more praise than criticism.

As the world's largest terrestrial carnivore(陆地肉食动物), the polar bear is the king of the great white north. Adult males can measure more than 9 feet in length and weigh between 770 and 1430 pounds. The polar bear has a strong body while their heads are narrow with small, rounded ears.

Polar bears can be found in northern Canada, Greenland, Norway and Russia, and there have been reports that polar bear tracks have been found as far north as the North Pole. The 5, 000, 000-square-mile range of the polar bear circles the Arctic and contains pieces of open water where seals are easily caught.

Polar bears live on the annual Arctic sea ice that provides a platform from which they can hunt. They hunt seals on the sea ice by breaking into seal dens in the sea ice. The dens aren't visible from above, but seeing is less important than smelling to a polar bear—with their sharp sense of smell, polar bears can sense the breathing holes of seals in their dens beneath the snow and ice. As the southern edge of the Arctic ice cap melts in summer, polar bears are forced to stay on land and spend their summers fasting(禁食), living off body fat stored from hunting in spring and winter.

With about 22, 000 polar bears living in the wild, the species is not endangered at the moment, but its future is far from certain. Climate change is causing the disappearance of sea ice from which polar bears hunt seals. Sea ice in the Arctic is melting earlier and forming later each year. People have reached an agreement that controls the hunting of polar bears and directs each nation to protect their habitats, but it does not protect the bears against the biggest man-made threat to their survival: global warming. If current warming trends continue, scientists believe that polar bears may disappear within 100 years.

  1. (1) Polar bears search for seals mainly through their       .

It was Christmas Day 1999. On CNN, talk show host Larry King was interviewing Stephen Hawking.

"What, professor, puzzled you the most?" King asked. "What do you think about the most?"

    Hawking immediately replied, "Women."

It's a comfort that Hawking, one of the smartest men in the world, is puzzled by the opposite sex. But, that's not surprising, according to Satoshi Kanazawa. Bright people are no better than anyone else at making smart decisions about common things, he says. These include finding a mate, maintaining family relationships, raising children, finding the way home, and dealing with a variety of basic life needs.

That's because there are several kinds of formal "intelligence", Kanazawa argues. Being smart one way does not necessarily mean smart in another way. This view is sure to cause arguments among scientists who think about thinking. That is because it disagrees with the common view that general intelligence is a single thing. In that view, it is not, as Kanazawa and others say, a set of independent mental areas.

Kanazawa says that some kinds of intelligence developed slowly over time. Many people have heard about what is called "emotional intelligence". Now, psychologists(心理学家) have discovered several other types of intelligence. These include the ability to learn a language, find a mate, recognise faces, and locate oneself in a new environment.

But, is there proof to support the theory that intelligence comes in many forms?" Actually, there is quite a lot of proof, " Kanazawa says. "If there were only one type of intelligence, "he adds, "people with high IQs should be ‘smart' in every way. "

In one test, a psychologist took a group of subjects on a hike, walking into the forest. He then told them to find their way back. The high IQ people were no more likely to be able to find out where they were. In another experiment, a researcher asked people to find their way to a specific location in a computer maze(迷宫). Once again, high IQ did not give them any edge.

  1. (1) Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

  2. (2) What are smart people like according to Satoshi Kanazawa?
A . They are better than the other people at making smart decisions about common things. B . They are as bad as the other people at making smart decisions about common things. C . They are more likely to be able to find the way back than the other people. D . They are more likely to be able to find a friend of the opposite sex.
  3. (3) The underlined word "edge" in the last paragraph probably means "      ".
    A . corner B . intelligence C . advantage D . proof

This Sunday in London, an American running phenomenon will hit the UK for the first time — and looks set to leave a mark. The Color Run™ series, founded in 2011 by Utah resident Travis Snyder, who currently lives in Los Angeles, is a 5k with a twist: runners start in white clothing, and at each kilometer get caked in brightly colored powders (made from 100% eco-friendly and natural food-grade corn starch) thrown by volunteers.

Snyder, 35, previously organized rock climbing events but says it was having a child that inspired him to think of an event combining fitness and pleasure. So far,  600,000 people have already taken part in Snyder's fitness festivals across the world, from Sydney to Rio de Janeiro, becoming America's biggest 5k along the way.

What does Snyder think is its appeal? "I think sometimes people get tired of being so competitive," he says. "In a running event, the person next to you is the tool that you are going to compare yourself to; whether or not you run faster than them or they run faster than you. The Color Run still has running in its basis: people still get to be out and be active. But instead of it being an exclusive experience, it's an inclusive experience, where the people next to you are part of that."

The events attract a large population, including families and children, along with a higher proportion of women than most runs. For many, it is their first race and furthest distance. Synder's eight-year-old son has taken part in 20 of the races. "It's not a big deal because he doesn't think of it as 5k – he is just running and having fun."

In line with this theme of participation rather than competition, there are no praises for coming first. If runners want to get a result, they will have to track it themselves, as it is not officially timed. And, needless to say, the finish line is one big party – before the clean up begins.

  1. (1) Those can join in the Color Run.

A . whose ages are more than 8 B . who wear colorful clothes C . who are good at running D . who dress in white
  2. (2) What contributed to Travis Snyder's founding the fitness festival?

    A . Competitive society. B . Being a father. C . Love among families and children. D . Having a lifestyle mentally and physically.
  3. (3) The Color Run series main aim is to       .

A . reduce people's stress B . find the fastest runners C . combine health and fun D . have a big party for every family
  4. (4) Why does the author mention Snyder's eight-year-old son in Paragraph 4?

A . To show Snyder's love for his son. B . To prove the son was good at running. C . To tell us how the son covers his furthest distance. D . To argue the activity gains popularity whatever age.

Bars are very important in providing a place where people can meet and make friends. People who enjoy a drink in a local bar are happier and have more friends. They are more likely to be engaged in conversations in small community pubs, and social skills improve after a drink.

Professor Robin Dunbar of Oxford University said, “Friendship and communities are probably the two most important factors influencing our health and well-being. Making and maintaining friendships is something that has to be done in the real world. The digital world is simply no substitute(n.替代物). Given the increasing tendency for our social life to be on the Internet rather than in real life, having relaxed, accessible places where people can meet old friends and make new ones becomes even more necessary.”

Tim Page, chief executive of CAMRA, said, “Bars offer a social environment to enjoy a drink with friends in a responsible community setting. The role of community bars in ensuring well-being cannot be overstated. For that reason, we all  need to do what we can to ensure that everyone has a ‘local' near to where they live or work.”

Bars have long been part of British society and have played a key role in British social life since the 16th century. Bars came to represent the heart and soul of a community, providing both a place of entertainment and an engine for community bonding. In a world before the arrival of the motor car, the bar provided a venue in which people could get friendships and a sense of community.

But the closing decades of the 20th century witnessed major changes in both the style of bars (for example, themed bars) and their numbers. As of 2015, the number of bars declines sharply, with bars continuing to close at an average rate of 29 a week.

  1. (1) What does a regular(n.常客) at a local bar having more friends prove?

A . The benefits brought by pub cultures B . The popularity of local bars in Britain. C . The relation between friendships and bars D . The importance of face-to-face communication.
  2. (2) What does Robin think is the tendency for social life?

A . More people will go to bars. B . People will maintain friendships C . People will trust the digital world D . People will communicate more online.
  3. (3) Why does Tim Page value the role of local bars?

A . They contribute to people's social happiness. B . They are a place common people can afford. C . They are a good place to spread cultural values. D . They are accessible to people in the community.
  4. (4) What can we infer about bars nowadays?

A . Themed bars have held the market B . Some bars have a hard time surviving. C . They become the heart of a community D . Measures should be taken to save them.
