Many people who work in London prefer to live outside, and to go into their of home or schools every day by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening.
One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small at in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one's own. Then, in the country one can rest from the noise and hurry of the town. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend one's free time digging, planting, watering and other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has the reward of one who has shared the secret of nature.
Some people, however, take no interest in country thing: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight's(two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.
21. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. One can't get a good sleep if he lives outside London.

Charles Dickens (1812-1870), the great nineteenth century English novelist, was born near Portsmouth. His father ran heavily into debt and when he was twelve, he had to go and work in a factory for making boot polish. The only formal education he received was a two-year schooling at a school for poor children. In fact, he had to teach himself all he knew. He worked for a time as junior clerk in a lawyer’s office. After that, he worked as a reporter in the law courts, and later in parliament, for London newspapers. His career as a writer of fiction began in 1833 with short stories and essays in periodicals, and in 1837 his comic novel The Pickwick Papers made him the most popular author at his time in England.
He was a great observer of people and their places because he was attracted by life and conditions in mid-nineteenth century London. He wrote 19 novels all his life and in many of them, Dickens gave a realistic picture of all classes of England society, showing deep sympathy for the poor and unfortunate, exposing the injustice and inhumanity of the bourgeoisie (资产阶级).
Many of his novels like Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Nicholas Nickleby, Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities and so on drew attention to the unsatisfactory social conditions that existed in England over a hundred years ago.

When studying foreign speech, don’t forget about body language. To help you master these significant parts of communication, here are four non-verbal characteristics that vary from culture to culture.
Gestures
When trying to communicate through a language barrier, it’s natural to use gestures as a way of explaining your point. 36 Hand motions are, however, culturally relative, and the wrong gesture can lead to confusion.
The thumbs-up sign is equal to the middle finger in Greece and Sardinia. Tapping your finger to your temple is a gesture to show memory in North America, but suggests insanity(精神错乱) in Russia 37 The yes-no gestures are reversed in countries like Bulgaria and Albania.
Silence
Though it can feel like a void in communication, silence can be very meaningful in different cultural contexts. Western cultures, especially North America and the UK, tend to view silence as problematic. In our interactions at work, school, or with friends, silence is often regarded as a sign of disinterest. 38 In China, silence can be used to show agreement.
Touch
Britain is classed as a “non-contact” culture, in which there’s very little physical contact in people’s daily interactions._ 39 By comparison, in the high-contact cultures of the Middle East, physical touch is a big part of socializing.
Eye Contact
40 We tend to assume that a conversation partner who looks away is either disengaged or lying. Of course, this is not the standard around the world.
A. Even nodding yes can be misunderstood abroad.
B. We think it’s helpful, since our words are being visually strengthened.
C. Individual gestures can cause miscommunication.
D. In other cultures, however, silence is not viewed as a negative circumstance.
E. In most western countries, frequent eye contact is a sign of confidence.
F. Naturally, these different standards of contact can lead to misunderstanding.
G. Even accidentally brushing someone’s arm is a reason for an apology.
Cheating can happen in a lot of different ways. When people cheat, it’s not fair to other people, like the kids who studied for the test or who the true winners of a game were.
Many people like the action of cheating. It makes difficult things seem easy, like getting all the right answers on the test. But it doesn’t solve the problem of not knowing the material and it won’t help on the next test---unless the person cheats again.
People lose respect for cheaters and think less of them. The cheaters themselves may feel bad because they know they are not really earning that good grade. And, if they get caught cheating, they will be in trouble at school, and may be at home, too.
Some kids cheat because they’re busy or lazy and they want to get good grades without spending time studying. Other kids might feel like they can’t pass the test without cheating, even when there seems to be a good reason for cheating, cheating isn’t a good idea.
If you were sick or upset about something the night before the day and couldn’t study, it would be better to talk with the teacher about this. And if you don’t have enough time to study for a test because of swim practice, you need to talk with you parents about how to balance swimming and school.
A kid who thinks cheating is the only way to pass a test needs to talk with the teacher and his or her parents so they can find some solutions(解决办法) together. Talking about these problems and working them out will feel better than cheating.
24.The author thinks that when kids cheat in class, ______.
A. it is unfair to other people.
B. it does harm to their health.
C .teachers should punish them.
D. teachers shouldn’t stop them at once.
25.Some students like cheating mainly because______.
A. the material in the test is very difficult.
B. they want to do better than the others.
C. cheating can make hard things seem very easy.
D. they have little time to study their lessons.
26.The fourth paragraph mainly tells us______.
A. some kids can’t pass the test without cheating
B. why kids cheat in the test.
C. cheating isn’t a good idea.
D. some kids don’t spend the time studying.
27.We can learn from the passage _______.
A. cheaters are often thought highly of
B. people show no respect for those who cheat.
C. parents whose kids cheat are often in trouble.
D. kids cheat in the test because of swim practice.
It has been around for centuries, but up until very recently, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) wasn’t fully accepted abroad. Proof of this can be found in The Treatment (《刮痧》), a 2001 film that tells the story of a Chinese man in the US who’s accused of abuse after he uses guasha, a form of TCM treatment, to cure his grandson’s disease.
During the last 10 years or so, however, TCM has been getting increasingly popular all over the world. A report released by the State Council Information Office on Dec. 6 says this style of health care, which includes different forms like herbal medicine and exercise, has spread to 183 countries and regions.
“We have set up 10 TCM centers outside China, and all of them are popular among locals,” Wang Guoqiang, head of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said at a news conference on Dec 6. “Governments of 86 countries and regions have signed agreements with the Chinese government on TCM corporation.”
One of the reasons behind the growing popularity of TCM is the increase of scientific research into it. And after Tu Youyou-the Chinese scientist who discovered the anti-malaria (抗疟疾) drug qinghaosu (青蒿素)-won the Nobel Prize last year, TCM became even more famous internationally.
However, all these achievements in TCM don’t mean that it’s problem-free. Over the years, TCM has faced challenges in being able to prove that it has certain effects.
Some researchers have suggested TCM should be more exact and work together with Western medicine.
“Bringing together with Western medicine and TCM, rather than being in competition, is where the potential for great effects is,” said Bernhard Schwartlander, the China representative of the World Health Organization.
24. The film The Treatment is mentioned in the first paragraph is to .
A. introduce the film to readers
B. show TCM is increasingly popular
C. arouse readers’ interest in Western medicine
D. prove that TCM is not fully accepted in western countries
25. We can learn from the passage that .
A. TCM is not exact in curing diseases
B. 10 TCM centers abroad are all set up by locals
C. 86 countries have cooperated with China on TCM
D. Tu Youyou’s success contributes to the popularity of TCM
26. According to Bernhard Schwartlander, TCM should .
A. combine western medicine
B. face no challenge at all
C. give an exact description of its effects
D. complete with western medicine
27. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. A report on TCM B. Opinions about TCM
C. TCM & Western Medicine D. Traditional healing spreads
The term “Industry 4.0” refers to the fourth industrial revolution. The first industrial revolution was the production of goods with machines like steam engines, which was followed by the second industrial revolution that introduced mass production with the help of electric power, followed by the digital revolution —the use of electronics and IT in production.
Industry 4.0 is a high-tech project, which promotes the computerization of manufacturing (制造业). The basic principle of Industry 4.0 is that by connecting machines, work pieces and systems, we are creating intelligent networks along the entire value chain that can control each other automatically. The goal is the Smart Factory, which adapts well and uses resources efficiently as well as linking customers and business partners with great intelligence. Technological bases are the Internet systems and advanced factories. Experts believe that Industry 4.0 could be a reality in about 10 to 20 years.
So, what effects does this change have on the classic manufacturing? According to an expert, “it is highly likely that the world of production will become more and more networked until everything is connected with everything else.” Networks and processes have so far been limited to one factory. But in the time of Industry 4.0, the boundaries (界限) of individual factories will most likely no longer exist. Instead, they will be lifted in order to inter-connect multiple factories or even geographical regions.
How is an Industry 4.0 factory different from a today’s factory? In current industry environment, providing high-end quality service or product with the least cost is the key to success. Factories are trying to increase their profit as much as possible. In the time of Industry 4.0, various data sources are available to provide worthwhile information about different aspects of the factory. Using data for understanding the current condition and checking faults and failures is a natural thing. The sharing of information around the clock and around the globe will enable these connected systems to manage themselves independently, work more efficiently and identify any errors quickly.
The good news is that Europe is much better prepared for the Industry 4.0 revolution than one might think. Europe will position itself as a pioneer in the fourth revolution. Industry 4.0 is a project in the high-tech strategy of the German government. Meanwhile, in the U.S., some companies are also working hard on it. But the success of industry depends on whether business and politics can work together. It’s not only politics that needs to help open the door for Industry 4.0. Every company is advised to seize the new digital opportunities.
42. What marks the coming of Industry 4.0?
A. Steam engines. B. Mass production.
C. Intelligent networks. D. Use of electronics.
43. Industry 4.0 will probably result in ________ in the world of manufacturing.

Millions of American high school seniors drink alcohol(酒精)at least once a week. Alcohol is the most common "drug" and has special risks for this age group. Studies show that about 50% of children with alcoholic parents will become alcoholics themselves.
Teenagers drink for many reasons. Some grow up seeing their parents or other adults drinking. They also see movies, television or magazine ads where a sports star enjoys some type of alcohol. There is often pressure from friends or classmates to drink. A teenager may drink to fit in with friends, or to appear more popular or confident. A teenager having worries, depression, or confusion, may use alcohol to deal with these feelings. Other situations that might cause a teenager to develop a drinking problem are:
●the divorce (离婚)of his or her parents;
●other family members with drinking problems;
●the death of his or her family members or other close people.
There are some WARNING SIGNS for adults to pay attention to. The following signs may be visible if a teenager has a serious drinking problem:
●keeping away from family or friends;
●not going to school, or falling grades;
●losing interest in activities or hobbies;
●getting into fights or often arguing with parents.
It may be hard to accept the fact that your child is out of control with alcohol. Sometimes it helps if you share your concerns with your colleagues, the school counselor(顾问), or your healthcare provider. Other helpers can be found at hospitals, mental health centers, or alcoholism treatment centers.
Alcoholics Anonymous works with teens who want to stop drinking. To learn more about teenage drinking, call your local Alcoholics Anonymous Chapter or the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence at (800) NCA-CALL.

Some Helpful Tips for a Happier You
I've been one of sad people before. It wasn't easy. But fortunately, I was able to get out of it in one piece. I want you to experience that too. Here are some simple tips that I found very effective and useful in finding my own kind of happiness. 16.
Exercise whenever you get the chance
17. It's more likely that you won't feel happy if you're having breathing problems when you're climbing the stairs, right? Bum those fats away and live a healthier and much happier life! Your happiness is not going to be served on a silver platter(毫不费力地). You've got to work for it and, give it your all.
Embrace the “real" you
I love the LEGO Movie because it emphasizes the importance of being happy with who you truly are. This is a very important thing to remember when you're in pursuit of happiness.18 . You don't need to be the same with another person just to feel good. You can be happy just by being you.
Avoid expecting anything from anyone
As pessimistic as this claim might sound, learned that there are some people out there who just won't give you a hand when you really need them to. 19
If a friend or a loved one is constantly disappointing you then stop hoping for them to get their act together. Instead, do the work and feel satisfied with what you've accomplished.
20.
Stay too long and the four corners of your room will only turn you into a gloomy version of yourself. Go outside and feel the sun. Indeed, the Internet is a wonderland filled with useful information, crazy people and your everyday drama but there's more to life than sitting in front of your computer screen.
A. One of the funny things about us people is that we complicate our own lives.
B. Hopefully, you'll be able to put them to good use.
C. Your physique (体格) has a lot of effects on your mind.
D. Put effort into the things you can control
E. Spend less time on the Internet
F. Remind yourself that you are your own man/woman.
G. Thus, I developed this “do more and expect nothing" mentality.
