“I grew up on Jackson’s music and I still have all his stuff on My iPod. I think that Michael Jackson will go down in history as one of our greatest entertainers. His brilliance as a performance also was paired with a tragic and in many ways, sad personal life.”
Michael Jackson was a singer, songwriter, dancer and celebrity icon with a vast catalog of hit records and countless awards to his credit. Beyond that,he had transfixed the world like few entertainers before or since. As a solo performer,he had enjoyed a level of superstardom previously known ——Barack Obama
only to Elvis Presley, the Beatles and Frank Sinatra.
Michael Jackson was unquestionably the biggest pop star of the 80s’,and certainly one of the most popular recording artists of all time.
Michael Joseph Jackson was born on August 29,1958.The fifth and youngest son of steelworker Joe Jackson,Michael displayed a talent for music and dance from an extremely young age. His father began to organize a family musical group around his three eldest sons in 1962,and Michael joined them the following year, quickly establishing himself as a dynamic stage performer. Dubbed the Jackson 5,the group signed to Motown in 1968 and issued their debut single in October 1969,when Michael was just 11 years old. I Want You Back,ABC,The Love You Save and I’ll Be There all hit number one in 1970,making the Jackson 5 the first group in pop history to have their first four singles top the charts. Later in 1972,Jackson had his first number one solo single,Ben. In 1977,he met producer/composer Quincy Jones for the first time. With Jones producing,Jackson recorded his first solo album as an adult,Off the Wall.
Released(发行) in 1982,the Quincy Jones produced Thriller refined the strengths of Off the Wall:the dance and rock tracks were more driving, the pop tunes and ballads softer and more soulful, and all of it was recognizably Michael. There was no surprise that Thriller was a hit;what was a surprise was its staying power .Jackson’s duet with McCartney,The Girl Is Mine, was a natural single choice, and it peaked at number two;then Billie Jean and the Van Halen track Beat It both hit number one,for seven and three weeks respectively.
Michael Jackson died from heart disease on June 25 at age 50.

Going to college is a new experience full of excitement of the unknown. Socialization is a big thing for college students and it is common to feel a little uncomfortable going into a situation where everyone is a stranger. You may probably miss your friends from high school.36 College is a great opportunity to make new lifelong friends. The question is: how?
▲Get to know your roommate. You may find you have lots of things in common with your roommate, but even if you are completely different from each other, with a little effort and understanding the two of you may become best friends.
▲ 37
If you leave your door open, this shows that you welcome visitors. As a result people will naturally stop in and say hello. Closed doors are not likely to bring many visitors and those who stay locked up in their rooms may give others the impression of being cold. Other students will be less likely to stop in and build a new friendship.
▲Join clubs or organizations.
Getting involved in organized societies is a great way to meet new people. 38 By staying active in college groups such as clubs and organizations you can meet lots of people with whom you share common interests.
▲Talk to classmates.
39 Starting conversations in class is a great opportunity to meet people who are interested in the same kind of studies as you are. Short friendly discussions can build lifelong friendships.
▲Try out for a sport. If you' re athletic, trying out for a sport will do for you the same thing that joining a club will do. 40

Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks for family, health, and life in general. However, Black Friday has turned it into a business.
Traditionally, the true value of Thanksgiving lies at home not the shopping centers. However, Black Friday has nowadays allowed society to ignore this as individuals(个人) long for something that they do not need or even truly want. Shopping on Black Friday becomes a sign of a shift into a culture that values material wealth(财富) over spending time with loved ones. People are willing to force their way through the crowds in their desperate search for marked-down sweaters and necklaces.
In recent years, Thanksgiving has become a pre-Black Friday holiday for many families. They are devoted to mapping out shopping routes and making organized schedules for which stores to hit first. By drawing individuals out to shopping centers with "matchless savings", businesses encourage this behavior of ignoring Thanksgiving. Many families take their home-cooked meals while camping out at the door of shopping centers. With each new year, Thanksgiving is becoming victim to over-commercialized(过度商业化)society—changing from a meaningful time for family to a day devoted to products and shopping.
Black Friday has shown that with current common standards(标准), people cannot even set aside a single day to appreciate what they already have without immediately buying more. Families have lost sight of what is truly important in life, and have found reasons in debating between a low cost HD television and an appreciation for what they already have. Remember, Thanksgiving should be a day in which people are grateful for all that they have.

D. They’ll go camping at the gate of shopping center for a good deal.
14.In the last paragraph, the author mainly intends to tell us that we should ______.
A. appreciate what we've possessed with our families
B. stay with our families as long as we can
C. try to spend less to get low cost products
D. set aside a single day to buy more
15.What's the author’s attitude towards the present ways people celebrate Thanksgiving?
A. puzzled B. unconcerned
C. happy D. worried
As computers become all the more popular in China, Chinese people are increasingly depending on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes (笔画) of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more.
Do you write by hand more or type more? In Beijing, students start using a computer as early as primary school. And computer dependence is more widely spread among university students. Almost all their assignment and essays are typed on a computer.
All the students interviewed say they usually use a computer.
It’s faster and easier to correct if using a computer. And that’s why computers are being applied more and more often to modern education. But when people are taking stock in computers increasingly, problems appear.
“When I’m writing with a pen, I find I often can’t remember how to write a character, though I feel I’m familiar with it.”
“I’m not in the mood to write when faced with a pen and paper.”
Many students don’t feel this is something to worry about. Now that it’s more convenient and efficient to write on a computer, why bother to handwrite?
Many educators think differently. Shi Liwei, headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital said, “ Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic (审美的) value. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only maintain their practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. And handwriting contains the writer’s emotion. Through one’s handwriting, people can get to know one’s thinking and personality. Beautiful writing will give people a better first impression of them.”
To encourage students to handwrite more, many primary schools in Beijing have made writing classes compulsory(必修的)and in universities, some professors are asking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand.
32. The underlined expression “taking stock in” in paragraph 4 probably means___.
A. getting bored with B. getting dependent on
C. becoming crazy about D. getting curious about
33. The students interviewed prefer to write using a computer mainly because____.
A. they can correct the mistakes they make quickly and conveniently
B. they are usually asked to e-mail their homework and essays
C. they find it not easy to remember how to write a character
D. computers have become a trend and fashion in China
34. Which of the following statement is NOT true of the advantage of handwriting?
A. Handwriting contains the writer’s emotions.
B. Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic value.
C. Handwriting can impress people well and build one’s self-confidence.
D. The writer’s thinking and personality are shown in his or her handwriting.
35. Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage?
A. To Type or to Handwrite.
B. The Importance of Handwriting and Typing.
C. Writing by Computer Will Replace Writing by Hand.

I’m a Chinese boy aging 17 and I’m crazy about music. It is one of the most important thing in my life. I listen music whenever I can. I have a minidisk player, with it I can have access to music whether walking in the street or ride on the bus. At home, there has a CD player in my room, and the music is on all the time.
I like rock music best of all. My favorite band is Rolling Stones, which had produced 40 albums since 1966. It happened that there was a living concert of Rolling Stones last Sunday. I decided to go. It was a great fun. I am also fond of classical music. I especially enjoy playing Beethoven once I’m doing my homework.

There are bound to be question marks over our future, so we often think of future. We often wonder that the world will like a hundred years’ time.
Think of space. Perhaps a permanent station on the moon will have been set up. Perhaps people will be able to visit the moon as tourist. Cheap rockets for space travel will have been developed, permitted long journeys through the solar system. When that time come, people will be taking holidays in space and visiting another planets. Great progress will have been made in medicine, too.
Pollution have been controlled in a hundred years’ time.
All the world will have been developed—even Antarctica. We will have used up many of the earth’s land to build our cities, therefore floating the cities will have been built. The Japanese have already plans in this kind. And there will be cities under the sea.
Almost everybody in America will spend a part of his or her life behind a shopping cart. They will, in a lifetime, push the chrome-plated contraptions many miles. But few will know—or even think to ask—who it was that invented them.
Sylvan N. Goldman invented the shopping cart in 1937. At that time he was in the supermarket business.Every day he would see shoppers lugging groceries around in baskets they had to carry.
One day Goldman suddenly had the idea of putting baskets on wheels. The wheeled baskets would make shopping much easier for his customers, and would help to attract more business.
On June 4, 1937, Goldman’s first carts were ready for use in his market. He was terribly excited on the morning of that day as customers began arriving. He couldn’t wait to see them using his invention.
But Goldman was disappointed. Most shoppers gave the carts a long look, but hardly anybody would give them a try.
After a while, Goldman decided to ask customers why they weren’t using his carts. “Don’t you think this arm is strong enough to carry a shopping basket?” one shopper replied.
But Goldman wasn’t beaten yet. He knew his carts would be a great success if only he could persuade people to give them a try. To this end, Goldman hired a group of people to push carts around his market and pretend they were shopping! Seeing this, the real customers gradually began copying the phony customers.
As Goldman had hoped, the carts were soon attracting larger and
larger numbers of customers to his market. But not only did more people come—those who came bought more. With larger, easier-to-handle baskets, customers unconsciously bought a greater number of items than before.
Today’s shopping carts are five times larger than Goldman’s original model. Perhaps that’s one reason Americans today spend more than five times as much money on food each year as they did before 1937—before the coming of the shopping cart.

There have always been a lot of commonly believed but false ideas about being fat and doing exercise. Some people believe that they can’t help putting on weight as they get older, while others hold that if they stop exercising, their muscles will turn into fat. Here are some more myths:
I’ll never lose weight --- I come from a fat family
Wrong! While we can’t change the body type we are born with, we can’t blame our genes for making us fat. There’s plenty of evidence that fatness runs in families, and the main reason is that they share the same habits of eating too much and exercise too little.

If you enjoy a Sunday walk, take a different route. If you do Yoga, try a tai chi class. If you like swimming, set yourself a distance or time challenge.
No pain, no gain
Wrong! Exercise is not meant to hurt. Indeed, pain is your body telling you something’s wrong, and continuing to exercise could lead to serious injury. A survey has shown that what you do on a plane can be determined by which nationality is listed on your passport.
According to the results of an international passenger survey, Australians are the biggest drinkers on board with 36 percent choosing to down the hatch(干杯), compared to 35 percent of Americans and 33 percent of Brits.
The Airline Passenger Experience Association(APEX) spoke to around 1,500 people, aged 18 and older, who have travelled by plane at least once during the last three months and were living in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, China, Singapore, Australia and Brazil.
The results found Chinese travelers are most likely to nod off once the seat-belt sign switches off. They are also the first to take out their credit card for some in-flight shopping and the biggest fans of gaming. Americans on the other hand like to use their time in the air more productively—when not drinking—choosing to work while flying at 35,000 feet.
Meanwhile, Brits and Germans are the best at making chat with random strangers—spending 50 percent more time than any other nationality. Comparatively, Brazilians conduct their conversations online via email, messaging apps or social media.
Despite plane food having a bad reputation, seven out of ten interviewees said they were happy to eat up on the selection of in-flight snacks and meals. In-flight magazines were also popular with four out of five passengers.
The international flyers did however express their desire for better in-flight entertainment. “The industry has greatly improved the comfort, entertainment and onboard service, and passengers are accepting those improvements” said Russell Lemieux, APEX executive director. “At the same time, passengers are demanding more from their air travel experiences which will drive more improvements touching all aspects of the journey. ” he added.

Frank joined in the army after middle school. He did quite well in everything except shooting. One day, the new soldiers were practiced shooting. Frank performed poorly while the rest was doing quite well. After he had shot at the target nine times but had not hit once, the officer shouted, “I had never seen such a fool! Don’t waste away your last bullet! Go behind that wall and shoot yourself with it!” Frank went behind a wall, and a few seconds late the sound of a shot was heard by the officer and the other soldier. “Heavens!” the officer said. “ Has that silly man real done so?” He ran behind the wall anxiously, only find Frank standing there straight, saying, “ I’m sorry, but I missed again.”

One of the easiest things in the world is to become a fault-finder. However, life can be 36 when you are not busy finding fault with it.
Several years ago I 37 a letter from seventeen-year-old Kerry, who described herself as a world-class fault-finder, almost always 38 by things. People were always doing things that annoyed her, and 39 was ever good enough. She was highly self-critical and also found fault with her friends. She became a really 40 person.
Unfortunately, it took a horrible accident to change her 41 . Her best friend was seriously hurt in a car crash. What made it almost 42 to deal with was that the day before the 43 , Kerry had visited her friend and had spent the whole time criticizing her 44 of boyfriends, the way she was living, the way she related to her mother, and various other things she felt she needed to 45 . It wasn't until her friend was badly hurt that Kerry became 46 her habit of finding fault. Very quickly, she learned to appreciate life rather than to 47 everything so harshly (刻薄. She was able to transfer her new wisdom to other parts of her 48 as well.
Perhaps most of us aren’t as extreme at fault-finding. 49 when we’re honest, we can be Sharply 50 of the world. I'm not suggesting you 51 problems, or that you pretend things are 52 than they are, but simply that you learn to allow things to be as they are— 53 most of the time, and especially when it's not a really big 54 .
Train yourself to “bite your tongue” and with a little 55 , you'll get really good at letting things go. And when you do, you'll get back your enthusiasm and love for life.
