If there’s one thing the British are good at, it’s watching telly. You may think the Americans would beat us at that, but we’ve taken and turned it into an art form. Like most people, our favorite TV subject is ourselves, which has led to a number of shows aiming to be as British as possible. So if you want to learn how to be British, sit down to a few episodes of these distinctly British shows.
DOCTOR WHO
Political aside, Doctor Who owes its long television life not only to a brilliant central character, terrifying alien foes and intelligent scriptwriting, but also to a distinctly British way of doing things. If the Earth is the Doctor’s favorite planet, it’s clear that Britain is his favorite country.
SHERLOCK
The global popularity of the modernized Sherlock Holmes series has proven yet again that no amount of big blockbuster all-guns-blazing cop shows can compete with the reserved and sharp detective work of one of Britain’s most well-loved characters. Benedict Cumberbatch has been rightly praised for his description of the fast-thinking private eye, which has proven again we Brits are good at more than drinking tea.
BLACKADDER
Similar to the Pythons, the brilliance of Blackadder is set in its genius application of witty and classically British humor. From the humorous tones of lead man Rowan Atkinson to the clumsy (笨拙的) sidekick (伙伴)Tony Robinson, there’s no better show for telling what makes the British British and having a good laugh at it, including an entire season of pointing fun at the French, one of the most British activities.
FRIENDS
I know what you’re thinking – Friends is an American show, about Americans’ living in America! How can it be distinctly British? But perhaps you’re not aware that, apart from Season 1, Friends is written entirely by British writers, and if you watch the first season in comparison to the others, the difference really shows. British sense of humor that can’t be replicated artificially. It’s a fine art by a natural hand. As an English student, I figure–Friends is, and although they speak in American accents, a British !
59. If you hunger to laugh, ______ is the best choice.
A. Sherlock. B. Blackadder C. Friends D. Doctor Who
60. What is stressed by the text?
A. The British are crazy about tea-drinking.
B. Friends are actually made by the British.
C. The British are always finding faults with the French.
D. The British are good at producing and watching telly.
61. The main purpose of the text is to________.
A. challenge the American show lovers
B. advertise the British most loved shows
C. provide some information about the British
D. introduce the techniques of the British shows
62. What would the author be?
A. A devoted British. B. A confident movie reviewer.
C. A cool British shows actor. D. An English show-making major.
When I was a child, I had to go to church and obey many other rules, though these rules at times caused resentment (怨恨). Perhaps the most extreme parenting decision my parents made for my four brothers and sisters and me was to create a home environment without a television.
We hated this decision at that time, because there was seemingly no way to keep this embarrassing fact a secret at school. Naturally, simple pleasures like cartoons, football games, and movies became huge novelties (新奇事物). I would go over to friends’ or relatives’ houses for that access alone.
When I reached high school, my parents bought a television, though it had no cable. However, I did spend most of my childhood in a home without a television. In fact not having a television did contribute a great deal to my skills, and it also forced me to develop other valuable interests. We grew up in a small town, so my brothers and sisters and I spent time exploring streets, fields and woods. And of course I read and wrote and studied, which pushed me toward a career path.
So would I give a similar situation to my own children if I had them? I doubt it, at least not in the most extreme sense. I’m too much of a football fan, not to mention the TV serials (连续剧) like The Wire. But television or almost anything for that matter is unhealthy for kids. It can prevent them from living a full life. So maybe a reasonable answer is no cable or no video-game systems or simply setting the time limit, but I haven’t exactly worked out how to confine it yet. Although some people are against my idea, we do need limits after all.
21. From the text we can learn that ______.
A. the author didn’t like watching TV as a child
B. the author’s family seldom went to church
C. not having a TV set brought the author many benefits
D. few homes had a TV set when the author was a child
22. From the last paragraph we can learn the author thinks that ______.
A. children shouldn’t watch TV too much
B. children should be forbidden to watch TV
C. children should only watch serials and sports on TV
D. watching TV is unhealthy for both adults and children
23. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “confine” in the last paragraph?
A. Limit. B. Punish. C. Reject. D. Support.

Recently some American scientists have given a useful piece of advice to people in industrialized nations. They say people should eat more of the same kind of food eaten by humans living more than 10,000 years ago. 36
The scientists say that the human life has changed greatly. Our bodies have not been able to deal with these changes in lifestyle and this had led to new kinds of sicknesses. 37 So they are called "diseases of civilization".Many cancers and diseases of the blood system are examples of such diseases.
Scientists noted that people in both the Old Stone Age and the New Stone Age enjoyed very little alcohol or tobacco, probably none. 38 However, a change in food is one of the main differences between life in ancient times and that of today.
Stone Age people hunted wild animals for their meat, which had much less fat than domestic ones. They ate a lot of fresh wild vegetables and fruits. They did not have milk or any other dairy products, and they made very little use of grains. 39 We eat six times more salt than our ancestors. We eat more sugar. We eat twice as much fat but only one third as much protein and much less vitamin C.
40 But scientists say that we would be much healthier if we eat much the same way the ancient people did, cutting the amount of fatty, salty and sweet food.
A.Stone Age people lived a simple life.
B.These new sicknesses were not known in ancient times.
C.In that case, they would live much healthier.
D.Ancient people also got lots of physical exercise.
E.But today, we enjoy eating a lot of these.
F.People today probably don't want to live like our ancestors.
G.Modern people used to suffer from "diseases of civilization".

The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., is one of the world's greatest art museums. Millions of people have entered its doors to see paintings by the world's fine artists. But if these priceless masterpieces are to be preserved, the Gallery must protect them carefully. The Gallery's 135-man guard force has successfully prevented them from being stolen, but protecting the paintings from nature is a greater problem.
In past times, the owners of paintings did not protect them from damaging changes in humidity (湿度) and temperature. As a result, the life of these paintings were shortened. In the National Gallery, however, humidity and temperature are carefully controlled. The building is air-conditioned in summer and heated in winter. The air-conditioning and heating systems are so important to the life of the paintings that the Gallery has two of each system. If one should fail, the extra one can take over.
Light is another enemy of paintings. Ultraviolet rays (紫外线) in light cause paintings to fade (褪色). Long ago, paintings often hung in dark churches and palaces. A coat of varnish (清漆) was a protection from the weak light. But when museums took over the care of many paintings, they were often hung in brighter light than before. Soon they were in danger of fading. The damaging effects of light were increased when the museums removed the varnish coating, yellowed with age.
To protect its paintings, the National Gallery put a special kind of glass in its skylights. This glass allows visible lights to enter the building but it keeps out harmful ultraviolet rays. The Gallery has also developed new and better varnishes which help to keep paintings from fading. Thanks to these new precautions, many of the world's greatest paintings are being well protected for future generations to enjoy.
1.The text mainly tells us about ______.
A. the guard force in the National Gallery B. protecting great paintings from nature
C. priceless paintings of past times
D. the air-conditioning and heating systems in the National Gallery
2. Which of the following is NOT an enemy of paintings?
A. Varnish. B. Temperature. C. Light. D. Humidity.
3. The underlined word "precautions" in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to ______.
A. decorations B. problems C. suggestions D. applications
4. From the text we can infer that_______.
A. great artists painted in dark churches and palaces
B. you can touch these paintings while you are in the National Gallery
C. the care of the world's greatest paintings is both a big responsibility and a challenge
D. the guard force in the Gallery has not done a good job
5. From the text, we can learn that __________ .
A.ultraviolet rays cannot affect paintings B.great artists painted with coats of varnish
C.some priceless paintings were not well preserved
D.the guard force in the National Gallery has not done a good job
Nuclear power's(核能的) danger to health, safety, and even life itself can be described in one word; radiation(辐射).
Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery about it, partly because it cannot be detected (探测) by human senses. It can't be seen or heard, or touched or tasted, even though it may be all around us. There are other things like that. For example, radio waves are all around us but we can't detect them, sense them, without a radio receiver. Similarly, we can't sense radioactivity without a radiation detector. But unlike common radio waves, nuclear radiation is not harmless to human beings and other living things.
At very high levels, radiation can kill an animal or human being outright by killing masses of cells (细胞) in important organs (器官). But even the lowest levels can do serious damage. There is no level of radiation that is completely safe. If the radiation does not hit anything important, the damage may not be significant. This is the case when only a few cells are hit, and if they are killed outright. Your body will replace the dead cells with healthy ones. But if the few cells are only damaged, and if they reproduce themselves, you may be in trouble. They reproduce themselves in an unusual way. They can grow into cancer. Sometimes this does not show up for many years.
This is another reason for some of the mystery about nuclear radiation. Serious damage can be done without the knowledge of the person at the time that damage has occurred. A person can be irradiated(放射治疗) and feel fine, then die of cancer five, ten, or twenty years later as a result. Or a child can be born weak or easy to get serious illness as a result of radiation absorbed by its grandparents.
Radiation can hurt us. We must know the truth.
21. According to the passage, the danger of nuclear power lies in __________.
A. nuclear mystery B. radiation detection
C. radiation level D. nuclear radiation
22.Radiation can lead to serious results even at the lowest level ________.
A. when it kills few cells
B. if it damages few cells
C. though the damaged cells can repair themselves
D. unless the damaged cells can reproduce themselves
23.Radiation can hurt us in the way that it can _____.
A. kill large numbers of cells in main organs so as to cause death immediately
B. damage cells which may grow into cancer years later
C. affect the healthy growth of our younger generation
D. lead to all of the above results
24.Which of the following can be best inferred from the passage?
A. The importance of protection from radiation cannot be overemphasized (过分强调).
B. The mystery about radiation remains unsolved.
C. Cancer is mainly caused by radiation.
D. Radiation can hurt those who do not know about its danger.

Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks for family, health, and life in general. However, Black Friday has turned it into a business.
Traditionally, the true value of Thanksgiving lies at home not the shopping centers. However, Black Friday has nowadays allowed society to ignore this as individuals long for something that they do not need or even truly want. Shopping on Black Friday becomes a sign of a shift into a culture that values material wealth over spending time with loved ones. People are willing to force their way through the crowds in their desperate search for marked-down sweaters and necklaces.
In recent years, Thanksgiving has become a pre-Black Friday holiday for many families. They are devoted to mapping out shopping routes and making organized schedules for which stores to hit first. By drawing individuals out to shopping centers with "matchless savings", businesses encourage this behavior of ignoring Thanksgiving. Many families take their home-cooked meals while camping out at the door of shopping centers. With each new year, Thanksgiving is becoming victim to over-commercialization—switching from a meaningful time of thanks and family to a day dedicated to products and profit.
Black Friday has shown that with current common standards, people cannot even set aside a single day to appreciate what they already have without immediately buying more. Families have lost sight of what is truly important in life, and have found reasons in debating between a low cost HD television and an appreciation for what they already have. Remember, Thanksgiving should be a day in which people are grateful for all that they have.
28. The underlined word "this" in paragraph 2 probably refers to ______.
A. the sign of a shift B. the true value of Thanksgiving
C. the shopping crowd D. the material wealth
29. In recent years, what will many families do when thanksgiving comes?
A.Visit some newly-opened shopping centers in advance.
B. Find it difficult to choose a store for their first visit.
C.Make full preparations for the Black Friday shopping.
D. Go camping at the gate of shopping center for a good deal.
30. In the last paragraph, the author mainly intends to tell us that we should ______.
A. set aside a single day to buy more.
B. try to spend less to get low cost products.
C. stay with our families as long as we can.
D. appreciate what we've possessed with our families.
31. What's the author’s attitude towards the present ways people celebrate
Thanksgiving?
Worried. B.Annoyed . C. Supportive. D. Unconcerned.

In our daily life, we unavoidably come across many challenge now and then. I meet
a big challenge when I was in high school. I was shocked to find which the physics teacher taught was totally beyond his understanding and I lost my confidence completely. Think I lacked a gift at physics, I stopped making efforts and my grades were poor. Fortunate, my teacher didn’t give me up. Instead of, she helped me analyze my problem and I realized I needed face challenges bravely. I regained my confidence, adjusted my approaches but worked hard. I improved my physics before long.
“Have a nice day!” may be a pleasant gesture or a meaningless expression. When my friend Maxie says “Have a nice day” with a smile, I know she sincerely cares about what happens to me. I feel loved and safe since another person cares about me and wishes me well.
“Have a nice day. Next!” This version of the expression is spoken by a salesgirl at the supermarket who is rushing me and my groceries out the door. The words come out in the same tone (腔调) with a fixed procedure. They are spoken at me, not to me. Obviously, the concern for my day and everyone else's is the management's attempt to increase business.
The expression is one of those behaviors that help people get along with each other. Sometimes it indicates the end of a meeting. As soon as you hear it, you know the meeting is at an end. Sometimes the expression saves us when we don't know what to say. “Oh, you just had a tooth out? I'm terribly sorry, but have a nice day. ”
The expression can be pleasant. If a stranger says “Have a nice day” to you, you may find it heartwarming because someone you don't know has tried to be nice to you.
Although the use of the expression is an insincere, meaningless social custom at times, there is nothing wrong with the sentence except that it is a little uninteresting. The salesgirl, the waitress, the teacher, and all the countless others who speak it without thinking may not really care about my day. But in a strange and comfortable way, it's nice to know they care enough to pretend they care when they really don't care all that much. While the expression may not often be sincere, it is always spoken. The point is that people say it all the time when they like.
