To support his sick wife and earn a paycheck, a 61-year-old Iowa man named Steve Simoff sometimes walks 35 miles to his job as an overnight gatekeeper. Simof said that he leaves his basement apartment in a small town at about 3:30 p.m. to get to the Lakesside hotel and Casino in Osceola where he begins to work at 11:00 p.m. for $9.07 per hour. His wife suffered a stoke nine years ago and some days there just isn’t enough money to put gas in the couple’s 2002 car. Moving closer to his job would likely mean paying more than he now does in monthly rent---$400.
Family and a job are “the two most important things I can think of,” Simoff said, explaining why he walks to his job. He and his wife, Renee, adopted their now 22-year-grandson, Steven, who has been unemployed since January.
Although some people along the route do stop to offer him a lift, they often drop him off about 8 miles from home. But Simon doesn’t seem to mind. He describes the walking route as “picturesque(风景如画的)” and sounds like he enjoy passing the cows and fields along the way. He’s done the walk in all kinds of weather, including snow. It’s a little dangerous because trucks frequent Interstate highway 35, whizzing (飞驰)past him at 70 miles per hour.
Simoff story has a familiar ring. Last month there were storied written about a Detroit man named James Robertson who for years has been walking 21 miles roundtrip through city streets to and from his factory job. The media attention got Robertson $350,000 from a GoFundMe campaign and a new car. We wonder what the Internet holds for Simoff.

A. to attract others’ attention B. to keep healthy and strong
C. to accompany his sick wife. D. to save money for his family

Steps to Begin Your Path to Greatness
Do you know there is something greater for you? Do you have ideas on what that may be, but can’t make them happen? Here are four steps to help you get started:
36
Many times we live based on others’ expectations. Own your path. It can be hard to do, but allow yourself to focus on your heart. Look within yourself deeply, and decide what you want and what’s true for you.
Take action.
There’s no better time to create the life you want than right this very moment! 37 To get started, you just need to put one foot in front of the other. Baby steps are key! If you want to start going to the gym, going from 0 day a week to 5 days a week right away is extreme. Instead, start slow and go once or twice a week. 38
Be determined.
Even if you’re working hard towards your goal, there may be blocks on the road—don’t give up. 39 So if you’re trying to eat better, and you have a day when you aren’t sticking to the plan, don’t give up. Accept that moment, and then keep moving forward.
Have the right support.
40 List the right support to cheer you on in the process. It could be a friend or a family member. Or, a 3rd party like a coach can give you an outsider perspective. Whoever it may be, having someone you can trust will be just what you need to keep you on track.
A. Don’t do it alone.
B. Follow your own heart.
C. Timing is never perfect.
D. Depend entirely on yourself .
E. Action always speaks louder than words.
F. Over time, you will achieve your goal by taking realistic and smaller steps.
G. These blocks help you grow and make you stronger every time you get past them.
Most Americans believe that someone isn’t grown-up until the age of 26 and they should complete their education, have a full-time job, have a family to support and be financially independent. They also believe that becoming a real grown-up is a process which begins at about the age of 20 and takes about five years, according to the report from the University of Chicago’s National Opinion Research Center.
The findings are based on a representative sample of 1,398 people over the age of 18 who were surveyed in person. The survey found that people expect the transitions to grown-up status to be completed at the following ages: age 20.9 self-supporting; age 21.1 no longer living with parents; age 21.2 having a full-time job; age 22.3 education completed; age 24.5 being able to support a family financially; age 25.7 getting married; and age 26.2 having a child.
“There is a large degree of agreement across social groups on the relative importance of the seven transitions,” said Tom Smith, director of the survey. The only obvious pattern of differences is on views about supporting a family, having children and getting married. Older adults consider these more important than younger adults do. This probably shows in large part a change in values across generations away from traditional family values. The most valued step toward reaching adulthood, the survey found, is completing education, followed by full-time employment, supporting a family, financial independence, living independently, and marriage.

As children enter their teens, they usually begin to pay more attention to their peers (同龄人) or friends. Peer pressure can be direct or indirect, but it is almost always present. Learning to deal with peer pressure makes a teen mature (成熟的), and able to get along well with others.
Bad peer pressure is when teens feel pressured to do something that they know is wrong, such as smoking, drinking, or drugs, and it can remain with them into adulthood. This is the main reason teens have to learn how to deal with it.
Some of the things you can do to deal with peer pressure include:
● Choose friends who share your values. Good friends use positive peer pressure to help you be your best self.
● Keep away from situations where people are doing things you don’t want to do.
● Think about your reasons for doing things. Are they good reasons? Are you being true to yourself and your values?
● Practice ways of saying no, giving excuses if necessary.
● Talk to your parents, or other trusted adults, about the kinds of peer pressure you face, and listen to their advice.
● Let the adults know when you need help to get out of a bad situation, and don’t know what to do about it.
Remember that if just one teen stands up to (对抗) peer pressure, usually others will join him or her. Learning to deal with peer pressure will make you confident and mature.

A recent survey, while indicating a generally active attitude to science, also suggests a widespread worry that it may be “running out of control”. This idea is dangerous.
Science can be a force for evil as well as for good. Its applications can be channeled either way, depending on our decisions. The decisions we make, personally or collectively, will determine the outcomes of science. But here is a real danger. Science is advancing so fast is so strongly influenced by businesses that we are likely to believe whatever decisions we come to will make little difference. And, rather than fighting for the best possible policies, we may step back and do nothing.
Some people go even further. They say that despite the moral and legal objections (反对), whatever is scientifically possible will be done ——somewhere, sometime. They believe that science will get out of control in the end. This belief is dangerous too, because it a fuels sense of hopelessness and discourages them from making efforts to build a safer world.
In our interconnected world, the lack of agreement in and of the world of science can lead to the failure to control the use of science. Without a common understanding, the challenges of “controlling” science in this century will be really tough. Take human cloning for example. Despite the general agreement among scientists on its possible huge impact (影响) on traditional moral values, some countries still go ahead with the research and development of its related techniques. The outcomes are hard to predict.
Therefore, discussions on how science is applied should be extended far beyond scientific societies. Only through the united efforts of people with hope, can we be fully safe against the misuse of science and can science best serve mankind in the future.
32.What can we conclude from the recent survey?
A.People hold mixed opinions about science
B.People think highly of science
C.Science is getting dangerously out of control
D.Science is used for both good and bad purposes
33.According to the passage, what will happen if we hold that science is getting beyond control?
A.The development of science will hopelessly slow down
B.Businesses will have even greater influence on science
C.People will work more actively to put science under control
D.The public will lose faith(信心) in bringing about a bright future
34.The discussion should reach beyond scientific societies because .
A.scientists have failed to predict the outcomes
B.people need to work together to prevent the bad use of science
C.united efforts are necessary for the development of science
D.the ties between different areas need strengthening
35.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Science and its applications bring us many dangers
B.Mankind can largely take control of science with their efforts
C.The development of science mostly lies in people’s attitudes
D.The future of science will be influenced by the dangerous ideas

When The New Republic magazine predicted who would win the 2016 Nobel Prize in literature on Oct 6, it said: “Not Bob Dylan. That’s for sure.”
But the award came as a surprise to many. On Oct 13, the famous US musician was named the Nobel laureate by the Swedish Academy. He has “created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition", according to the organization.
Although Dylan, 75, is not really thought to be a literary(文学的) writer, he has given the world a lot of creative work over 50 years, especially when it comes to his folk songs.
In his 1985 album Biograph, Dylan wrote about the appeal(魅力) of folk music to him. Rock songs “weren’t serious enough or didn’t reflect(反映) life in a realistic way", according to Dylan. But folk, was “a more serious type of thing. The songs are filled with more sadness; more joy …much deeper feelings".
Dylan’s music and lyrics spoke to many people during the 1960s. His lyrics were often about great political issues, such as the civil rights movement. The 1960s were a time of change when the young were making sure that their voices were heard. The idea is mast famously expressed in Dylan's The Times They Are a -Changin (1964), which warns the world, “You better start swimming or you'll sink(下沉) like a stone. For the times they are a-changin!”
There were complaints that a literary prize had been given to a singer. But ancient “Greek poets Homer and Sappho wrote poetic works that were meant to be listened to, that were meant to be performed, often with instruments - and it s the same way with Dylan ",the Swedish Academy’s permanent secretary Sara Danius told CNN.
It could even be said that giving the important prize to Dylan has brought back an old literary tradition. The millions whose lives Dylan’s words and music have changed will surely welcome the award.

Outside her shabby cottage, old Mrs. Tailor was hanging out laundry on a wire line, unaware that some children lay hidden in the leaves of a nearby tree watching her every move. They were determined to find out if she really was a witch.
They watched as she took a broomstick to clean the dirt from her stone steps. But, much to their disappointment, she did not mount the broomstick and take a flight. Suddenly, the old lady’s work was interrupted by the cackling of her hen—a signal that an egg had been laid in the warm nest on top of the haystack.
The old broomstick was put aside as she hobbled off towards the haystack followed by Sooty, a black cat she had rescued from a fox trap some time back. With only three legs, it was hard for Sooty to keep up with the old lady. The cat provided proof—the children were sure that only a witch could own a black cat with three legs.
There, standing on a wooden box, was Mrs. Tailor, stretch

“What if it is a trick?” replied Ben.
“Don’t be silly, Ben. If she were a witch, she would have turned us into frogs already,” reasoned Meg. “Come on, Amy, let’s go.” The girls climbed down the tree and ran all the way to the haystack.
Approaching carefully, they could see a wound on the old lady’s face. She had knocked her head on a stone and her ankle was definitely broken. “Go and get Dad,” Amy yelled to her brother. “Tell him about the accident.”
