高一英语下学期下册试题

The summer holiday is coming. My classmates and I are talking about how to do during the holiday. We can chose between staying at home and take a trip. If we stay at home, it is comfortable but there is no need to spend money. But in that case, we will learn little about world. If we go on a trip abroad, we can broaden your view and gain knowledges we cannot get from books. Some classmates suggest we can go to places of interest nearby. I thought that it is a good idea. It does not cost many, yet we can still learn a lot.

For five days, Edmonton’s Downtown Park is transformed into one huge stage where artists are able to share their talents, and where people are able to celebrate and enjoy themselves .Since its beginning in 1980, the Edmonton Folk Music Festival has been commemorating (纪念) the true feeling of what folk music is all about and that's the traditional togetherness (友爱) that is felt when people gather to share stories and feelings through song.

This year will be the sixth year when volunteer Riedel will be offering up her time to the festival. "People coming off a busy spring and summer have a moment of relaxation," Riedel said. "It's really easy to relax, and it's great seeing family and friends have fun together." These families and friends come from all different kinds of musical tastes. People who take pleasure in Blues are there, so are people who love Bluegrass. This festival does its best to develop everyone's musical interests.

With so many years of experience, the festival has become a well-oiled machine, and does whatever it can to make attendees feel as comfortable as possible. There are free water stations throughout the venue (举办地) for people to fill up their travel cups. When people buy food, reusable dishes are given a $2 plate fee, but that is returned when the plate is brought back.

The festival has completely sold out of tickets, and in record time. But with big names such as Van Morrison and Jakob Dylan, it’s easy to see how that was going to happen. There is no parking area during the festival, so using the Park & Ride system or Edmonton Transit is highly recommended. A bike lock-up area is provided and will be available Thursday until Sunday one hour before the gates open until 45 minutes after the gates close.

The Edmonton Folk Music Festival begins on Wednesday, Aug.4 with Van Morrison playing the special donation fund (基金) concert, and will finish up on Sunday, Aug.8.

I used to feel I was the sun in my familyBut when my cousin was borneveryone pays more attention to herSo I disliked her and couldn’t get along well with her. With time went onI realized how ridiculous I have been at that timeI tried to find a proper time to apologizeWhen my cousin’s family came to my home a few day agoI took my cousin to play outsideIn the way to the playground, I bought much snacks for herThen we began chatWhen we talked about their childhoodsuddenlyI said a sorrygentlyShe was silentso I thought that she hadn’t heard me clearlyBut after while she said:“Dont say thatIn my memoryyou are always friendly.”

Rebecca, who is a 25-year-old woman, has a rare condition. She can remember all the events she has experienced in her life. The events are so vivid(生动的), as if they happened just moments ago. But her vivid memories often become a reality. Rebecca said, “When I relive(再想起) memories, the emotions come back. So if it’s something that happened when I was younger, my emotions are about what I felt then. I also re-experience pain. For example, I remember falling over and hurting my left knee when I was three. When talking about it now, I’m getting pain in my left knee.”

However, there are times when Rebecca’s memories prove to be too overwhelming(压倒性的), and she has learnt relaxation and mindfulness(聚精会神) techniques to solve. “At school, it is a hindrance. I’m not very quick at processing(处理) things, so there is always so much going through my mind. At night, I have to sleep with the radio on and a soft light. If it’s too dark or quiet, my mind just recalls(再回忆起) all these memories and I can’t sleep,” Rebecca said.

In addition, Rebecca has no control over whether the memories she recalls will be positive or negative – recalling painful experiences with such vividness that she has suffered from post-traumatic (创伤后的) stress disorder. Rebecca said, “Recently, I went back to my old school for my sister’s high school graduation. Being in that building again brought all those memories flooding back. I burst into tears and had to leave.”

Rebecca and her mother Mrs. Barnes got in touch with the University of California in 2011. It was there that Rebecca knew she had Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory (HSAM). It’s reported that Rebecca is one of just 80 people worldwide, who have HASM. “Finding out about HASM has been such a positive experience. Now, Rebecca has been more positive and able to do things independently, which has been excellent,” Mrs. Barnes said.

28. What’s wrong with Rebecca?

A. She hardly sleeps well at night.

B. She usually gets hurt easily by others.

C. She can’t distinguish between reality and dreams.

D. Her vivid memories lead her to experience sufferings.

29. What does the underlined word “hindrance” mean in Paragraph 2?

A. priority(优先权)       B.  advantage.    C. difficulty.      D. opportunity.

30. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

A. Rebecca had a strong dislike of going to school.

B. Rebecca was moved to tears at her sister’s graduation.

C. Rebecca and her sister once studied in the same school.

D. Rebecca enjoyed a happy life during her high school years.

31. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that Rebecca_____.

A. has got her life improved gradually

B. was influenced by her mother to be positive

C. was admitted into the University of California

D. became well-known due to her rare condition

Do you drink water that's been left sitting out overnight or even for another day? Have you noticed it tastes different?

Tap water that has been left to sit out slowly begins to acquire(获得) off taste. Many people think that this is because of microorganisms. But that's not what makes old water taste not fresh. For that we can thank carbon dioxide. After about 12 hours, tap water starts to go flat as carbon dioxide in the air starts to mix with the water in the glass, lowering its pH and giving it an off taste. But it's most likely safe to drink.

However, back to those microorganisms. If you use a dirty glass day after day, there is more of a chance of bacteria making themselves known; a risk that increases if you share the glass with another mouth as well. But assuming(假设) you use a fresh glass every few days, you probably won't have a problem unless the glass has been touched by dirty fingers, and especially if those dirty fingers went unwashed after using the bathroom.

As for plastic water bottles that have been left out in the sun or in the car, step away from the bottle, warns Dr. Kellogg Schwab, director of the Johns Hopkins University Water Institute. "A chemical called bisphenol-A, or BPA, along with other things used to make plastic can leach(过滤) into your water if the bottle heats up or sits in the sun," he explains. BPA, as you probably know, has been linked to everything from heart disease to cancer. Schwab also adds that plastic used for commercial bottled water isn't meant to be washed or refilled, so use only one time and recycle. Or don't buy them at all; use refillable water bottles instead.

24. Tap water begin to acquire an off taste because of______ .

A. carbon dioxide       B. BPA

C. the glass            D. the microorganism

25. According to Paragragh 2 , tap water that's been left sitting out for 12 hours____.

A. contains few microorganisms        B. tastes better

C. is still safe to drink                D. is most likely undrinkable

26. What should we do with plastic water bottles that have been left out in the sun or in the car?

 A. Refill them with fresh water        B. Clean them and use them again.

C. Use them after they cool down.  .     D. Throw them away.

27. Which of the following is true about BPA?

A. It is safe for people to use.        B. It is a kind of new material.

C. It can cause great harm to people.  D. It is the main material to make plastic.

Dolphins have been known to play sometimes with and carry sponges(海绵)over their noses, but researchers have been at a loss to explain precisely why.

Now, a recent study by Australian researchers may have uncovered the reason.

Sightings of dolphins carrying sponges on their noses while hunting fish from the rocky ocean floor have been recorded since the 1980s.

Researchers at the University of New South Wales used computer modeling of behavior to explore how long the interesting behavior, believed to provide protection against nose injuries, has gone on.

“In animal species that use tools, usually the entire population uses the tools. But in this case, only about five percent of the dolphins living in the bay use the sponges as a tool,” said Anna Kopps at the University of New South Wales Evolution Ecologist Research Centre.

The research also shows that nearly all the spongers are female. Scientists believe one single female started sponging in Shark Bay and all her descendants(后代)in the area---now the home of around three thousand dolphins—learned the behavior from their mothers. The sponging has been going to for some hundred eighty years.

“It’s interesting that the behavior doesn’t spread to the entire population and it doesn’t go extinct either,” said Kopps.

Dolphin descendants are dependent to their mothers for about four years, giving them enough time to observe and learn survival techniques.

While male dolphins also learn sponging from their mothers, the study found they learn the technique slowly.

“Some males use it but it will be a dead end because dolphins don’t learn form the dads,” Kopps said.

Despite the seeming usefulness of the technique, the researchers found it may not be a more successful technique than other hunting methods. “Regardless, sponging appears to be just as good as any other hunting technique,” said Kopps. “It turns out the cleverest of the sea world can also be tool-using lovers, spending more time hunting with tools than any non-human animal.”

The research is fascinating, but the question of whether tool use is particularly advantageous remains unanswered.

28. Why do some dolphins carry sponges while hunting fish according to the study?

   A. To protect themselves

   B. To cure nose injuries

   C. To catch more fish

   D. To have some fun

29. Scientists believe that the sponging behavior __________.

   A. is passed down by mother dolphins

   B. is now in danger of disappearing

   C. has existed for about thirty years

   D. is unique to female dolphins

30. It seems that male dolphins __________.

   A. help bring up the young

   B. are born sponging experts

   C. teach the young survival skills

   D. are slower learners of sponging

31. Kopps may agree with the idea that __________.

   A. tool use shows high intelligence

   B. sponging is useful for hunting fish

   C. sponging will gain popularity in the future

   D. dolphins are the first sea animals to use tools

“Clean your plate!” Just about every kid in the US has heard this from a parent. Often, it is accompanied by an appeal: “Just think about those starving orphans in Africa!” Sure, we should be grateful for every bite of food. Unfortunately, many people in the US take too many bites. Instead of staying “clean the plate”, perhaps we should save some food for tomorrow.
According to news reports, US restaurants are partly to blame for the growing bellies. A waiter puts a plate of food in front of each customer, with two to four times the amount recommended by the government, according to a USA Today story. Americans traditionally associate quantity with value and most restaurants try to give them that. They prefer to have customers complain about too much food rather than too little.
Barbara Rolls, a nutrition professor at Pennsylvania State University, told USA Today that restaurant portion sizes began to grow in the 1970s, the same time that the American waistline began to expand.
Health experts have tried to get many restaurants to serve smaller portions. Now, apparently, some customers are calling for this too. The restaurant industry trade believed restaurants serve portions that are too large; 23 percent had no opinion; 20 percent disagreed. But a closer look at the survey indicates that many Americans who can’t afford fine dining still prefer large portions. 70 percent of those earning at least
150,000 per year prefer smaller portions; but only 45 percent of those earning less than25,000 want smaller.
It’s not that working class Americans don’t want to eat healthy, It’s just that, after long hours at low-paying jobs, getting less on their plate hardly seems like a good deal. They live from paycheck to paycheck, happy to save a little money for next year’s Christmas presents.
57. “Clean your plate!” in the first paragraph means
______.
  A. to wash the plate                                                    B. not to eat too much
  C. not to waste the food                                              D. to help the starving orphans
58.American restaurants serve large portions because
______.
  A. Americans are good at eating                                    B. Americans value the amount
  C. the restaurants want people to keep healthy               D. the government recommends the amount
59.What happened in the 1970s?
  A. The government recommended serving small portion.
  B. Americans began to realize the importance of health.
  C. Health experts persuaded restaurants to serve large portion.
  D. People in the United States began to gain weight.
60. What does the survey indicate?
  A. Many poor Americans want large portions.
  B. 20 percent Americans want smaller portions.
  C. 70 percent Americans earn at least
150,000 per year.
  D. 45 percent Americans earn less than
25,000 per year.

I’m here today to share a good lesson with you. It is a true story about a student    ___41   studied in Germany.

After years of hard work, this student graduated with    42   (amaze) achievements(成就). Everyone was sure that he was going to get a good job easily and have a bright future. But to his surprise, he was not even given the chance for    43   interview! The third time he    44   (refuse), he couldn’t help    45   (telephone) the company to ask why they didn’t want him. The answer was simple. “We don’t offer jobs to dishonest people in Germany.”

You might wonder what was wrong. The truth is, shortly after he    46   (arrive) in Germany, this clever student found that    47    was easy to avoid buying subway tickets in this country. So in order to save money, he often went in the subway without a ticket. As a result, he had been caught without a ticket many    48   (time).

From this story, we learn that we may get short-term benefits in dishonest ways,   49   the truth will come out sooner or later and the cost is high. So remember:   50 (honest) is the best behavior.
