高一英语上学期上册试题

One morning, I wasted nearly an hour watching a tiny ant carry a huge feather(羽毛). Several times, it  41 several obstacles(障碍)in its path. And after a momentary pause it would make the necessary detour (绕道).  42   one point, the ant had to cross a crack(裂缝) about 10mm wide. After some   43  thoughts, the ant laid the feather over the crack, walked   44   it and picked the feather up on the other side, then continued on its way. I was   45   by the cleverness of this ant. It was only a small insect, lacking in   46   yet equipped with a brain to reason, explore, discover and overcome.  47   this ant, like the other two-legged creatures  48  on the earth, also shares human failings.

After some time the ant   49   reached its destination—a flower bed and a small hole that was the entrance to its   50   home. It was there that the ant met its   51  .How could that large feather possibly   52   such a small hole? Of course, it couldn’t. So the ant, after all this   53   and using great brightness, overcoming problems all along the way, just gave up the   54   and went home. The ant had not thought the problem through   55   it began its journey and in the end the feather was   56   more than a burden. Isn’t our   57   like that?

We worry about our families; we worry about the   58   of money; and we worry about all kinds of things. These are all burdens—the things we pick up along life’s path, and drag them around the obstacles and over the cracks that life will bring, only to   59   that at the destination they are  60   and we can’t take them with us.

As a young boy, I sometimes traveled the country roads with my dad. He was a rural mail carrier, and on Saturdays he would ask me to go with him. Driving through the countryside was always an adventure: There were animals to see, people to visit, and chocolate cookies if you knew where to stop, and Dad did.

In the spring, Dad delivered boxes full of baby chickens, and when I was a boy it was such fun to stick your fingers through one of the holes of the boxes and let the baby birds peck on your fingers.

On Dad's final day of work, it took him well into the evening to complete his rounds because at least one member from each family was waiting at their mailbox to thank him for his friendship and his years of service. "Two hundred and nineteen mailboxes on my route," he used to say, “and a story at every one." One lady had no mailbox, so Dad took the mail in to her every day because she was nearly blind. Once inside, he read her mail and helped her pay her bills.

Mailboxes were sometimes used for things other than mail. One note left in a mailbox read, "Nat, take these eggs to Marian; she's baking a cake and doesn't have any eggs." Mailboxes might be buried in the snow, or broken, or lying on the ground, but the mail was always delivered. On cold days Dad might find one of his customers(顾客) waiting for him with a cup of hot chocolate. A young girl wrote letters but had no stamps, so she left a few buttons(纽扣)on the envelope in the mailbox; Dad paid for the stamps. One businessman used to leave large amounts of cash(现金)in his mailbox for Dad to take to the bank. Once, the amount came to $ 32,000.

Ten years ago, when I traveled back to my hometown on the sad occasion of Dad's death, the mailboxes along the way reminded(回想) me of some of his stories. I thought I knew them all, but that wasn't the ease.

As I drove home, I noticed two lamp poles(), one on each side of the street. When my dad was around, those poles supported wooden boxes about four feet off the ground. One box was painted green, and the other was red, and each had a long narrow hole at the top with white lettering: SANTA CLAUS, NORTH POLE. For years children had dropped letters to Santa through those holes.

I made a turn at the comer and drove past the post office and across the railroad tracks to our house. Mom and I were sitting at the kitchen table when I heard footsteps. There, at the door, stood Frank Townsend, Dad's postmaster and great friend for many years. So we all sat down at the table and began to tell stories.

At one point Frank looked at me with tears in his eyes. "What are we going to do about the letters this Christmas?" he asked.

"The letters?"

"I guess you never knew."

"Knew what?"

"Remember, when you were a kid and you used to put your letters to Santa in those green and red boxes on Main Street? It was your dad who answered all those letters every year. "

I just sat there with tears in my eyes. It wasn't hard for me to imagine Dad sitting at the old oak table in our basement reading those letters and answering each one. I have since spoken with several of the people who received Christmas letters during their childhood, and they told me how amazed they were that Santa had known so much about their homes and families.

For me, just knowing that story about my father was the gift of a lifetime.

Yesterday I stepped into a restaurant for lunch. As I was waiting my order to come, I noticed the old man in a wheelchair roll himself over to a table. No one besides me seemed to notice him. I got up and go over to his table and asked if that I could get him something to drink. He smiled and said, “Thank you.You are generously. I’d like any orange juice, please.”When I was getting ready to leave, I walked by the old man’s table to saying goodbye. He thanked me again and told me I had made his days, coming over and helping him out. I gave him a hug and told him he had made my day, either.

Art museums are places where people can learn about various cultures. The increasingly popular “design museums” that are opening today, however, are quite different. Unlike most art museums, the design museum shows objects that are easily found by the general public. These museums sometimes even place things like fridges and washing machines in the center of the hall.

People have argued that design museums are often made use of as advertisements for new industrial technology. But their role is not simply a matter of sales — it is the honoring of excellently invented products. The difference between the window of a department store and the showcase in a design museum is that the first tries to sell you something, while the second tells you the success of a sale.

One advantage of design museums is that they are places where people feel familiar with the exhibits. Unlike the average art museum visitors, design museum visitors seldom feel frightened or puzzled. This is partly because design museums clearly show how and why mass-produced products work and look as they do, and how design has improved the quality of our lives. Art museum exhibits, on the other hand, would most probably fill visitors with a feeling that there is something beyond their understanding.

In recent years, several new design museums have opened their doors. Each of these museums has tried to satisfy the public’s growing interest in the field with new ideas. London’s Design Museum, for example, shows a collection of mass-produced objects from Zippo lighters to electric typewriters to a group of Italian fish-tins. The choices open to design museums seem far less strict than those to art museums, and visitors may also sense the humorous part of our society while walking around such exhibits as interesting and unusually attractive toys collected in our everyday life.

(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN ELEVEN WORDS.)

78. According to the passage, design museums are places where ___________________ _________________________________________.

79. What kinds of role do design museums play?

81. Some new design museums have been opened lately with the purpose of _________ ___________________________________________.

Tourism wasn’t as important as it is today. In the past, only people with a good deal of money could travel on holidays to other countries. More people travel today than in the past because there is a growing middle class in many parts of the world; that is to say, people now have more money for travel. Special plane fares for tourists make travel less expensive and more attractive than ever before. One person doesn’t travel for the same reason as another. But most people enjoy seeing countries that are different from their own. They also like to meet new people and to taste new food.

Tourism brings many changes in a country and in people’s lives. People build new hotels and restaurants and train native men and women as guides to show visitors interesting places. There’re new nightclubs and other amusements. International tourism is clearly a big business.

1. In the old days _________ could travel to other countries.

A. boys and girls, men or women, young or old

B. either kings or queens

C. both the poor and the rich

D. nobody but those who had money

A. Travel by air to other countries is much cheaper today.

B. More guides are being trained to show beautiful spots.

C. Modern telegraph lines make travel less expensive.

D. New hotels and restaurants have been built.

3. Which of the following statements is true according to the article?

A. Tourism won’t bring any changes in people’s minds.

B. People have some trouble in making journey.

A couple had a son eleven years after they married. They were a loving couple and the boy was the apple of their eye. When the boy was around four years old, one day the father was very tired after work so he asked his wife to pick up their son. The mother, who was very busy in the kitchen, totally forgot about it.
Later the boy lost his way on the street. When the son was found missing, the mother hurried to look for him, but she didn't find him. The mother felt very sad and didn't know how to face her husband.
When the father went to the police station after hearing that the son was missing, he looked at his wife and said just four words. What do you think the four words were? The husband just said “I love you, darling.”
The son was missing. If she had picked him up earlier, this would not have happened. There is no point in blaming (
责备) anyone. His wife had also lost her only child. What his wife needed at that moment was comfort and understanding from her husband. That is what the husband gave his wife. Several weeks later, with the help of the police, the couple finally found their lost son. The family's relationship became stronger over that time.
Sometimes we spend lots of time asking who is to blame. We miss many chances to give each other support and let each other feel the warmth of human relationships. Get rid of all your unwillingness to forgive, selfishness, and fears and you will find the world is much more wonderful.

Mr. Peter Johnson, aged twenty-three, battled for half an hour to escape from his trapped car yesterday when it landed upside down in three feet of water. Mr. Johnson took the only escape route——through the boot(行李箱).

Mr. Johnson’s car had finished up in a ditch(沟渠) at Romney Marsin, Kent, after skidding on ice and hitting a bank. “Fortunately, the water began to come in only slowly,” Mr. Johnson said, “I couldn’t force the doors because they were jammed against the walls of the ditch and dared not open the windows because I knew water would come flooding in.”

Mr. Johnson, a sweet salesman of Sitting Home, Kent, first tried to attract the attention of other motorists by sounding the horn and hammering on the roof and boot. Then he began his struggle to escape.

Later he said, “It was really a half penny that saved my life. It was the only coin I had in my pocket and I used it to unscrew the back seat to get into the boot. I hammered desperately with a hammer trying to make someone hear, but no help came.”
