Dear Mary,
How are you? Today I've got a wonderful news to tell you.I have offered a scholarship at a university in Australia for my further education. One hundreds and twenty students took exams but only a few was chosen and I was one of them. However,my parents are not happy about it.They are strong against me going there. They say it is too far away that they will not see me for a whole year and they are afraid I will feel lonely. They couldn't imagine a girl so young living alone. They advise me to study in the capital instead. Then I'll be able to continue living with us.Why can I persuade them to accept the fact that I have grew up?
Best Wishes.
Jane
It happened last year. One day, after the kids left for a three-day camp, my wife and I went to 26 a mountain. We were walking up a mountain road, 27 a rare moment of being alone together. As we rounded a bend, we saw a friend not too far 28 . When we caught up with her, she 29 we should walk together.
I have known her for 35 years since we were schoolchildren. We’re 30 friends, and both my wife and I 31 spending time with her talking or eating. 32 , at that moment, we didn’t want to walk with her. We wanted times belonging to 33 .
We didn’t want to slow her pace, which was the 34 we used, explaining that I want to keep my heart rate in an aerobic(有氧的) zone. Somehow, I felt it was less 35 than saying we wanted to be alone.
But when we were on the way down, we met her again. She 36 to go down together with us. The reason we used before didn’t hold up because pace wasn’t at all a 37 going downhill. So I said we were too tired and needed to have a 38 ,and advised her to go first.
From her reaction, I could tell she knew we were not telling the 39 . She must have felt that we were 40 her and we left feeling 41 . She has refused to talk to us since that time.
Why didn’t we just tell her we wanted to spend some time alone? She 42 would have understood as she was such an understanding person. The 43 is that we didn’t want to sound mean or rude. But the fact is that we’ve 44 our friend by lying to her twice, for which we felt 45 .

Many people are quick to say that television has little, or no, educational value. It is true there are lots of programs that are completely worthless — take Big Brother for example. However, some television programs can improve our knowledge of certain things. Here are some of my favorite shows:
Blue Peter: It is the longest-running children's TV show in the world, although it has fallen out of date recently. Children would often learn about different countries around the world. For example, one presenter (主持人) went to the Amazon rainforest in South America!
The Great British Bake Off: This show is all about making cakes, biscuits and pies. The purpose is to find Britain' s best amateur (业余的) baker. You can watch the show to get some new baking ideas.
Frozen Planet: David Attenborough has produced many films about wildlife. This one is about life in the most northern and southern parts of the world: polar bears, seals, penguins, moose and many more animals. I love this show mainly because it teaches us about the influence we have on the planet and what we need to do to save these places.
Pointless: This is a general knowledge quiz (问答比赛) show. Each round will provide a different category (e.g. sport, music, films) and a question will be given, for example "Which teams have won the World Cup?" Before the show, 100 people will have been asked the Same question. Contestants (竞赛者) then have to think of an answer which none of the 100people thought of.

With a large part of the world's population living close to the oceans, rising sea levels bring the potential for destructive (破坏性的)results. But scientists are still unable to make predictions exact enough for people to plan to handle the loss of land and the threat to coastal communities expected over this century.
“We know sea level is going to rise, but how much, and how fast, and where, we really still don’t know," said Josh Willis, a climate scientist.
The ocean isn't like water in a bathtub. It doesn’t rise all the same as more water pours in. As global warming raises sea levels, some places are expected to see higher-than-average increases, and a few places, may even see decreases.
It’s reported that over the course of this century, sea levels will rise between 8 inches and 6.6 feet around the planet. Scientists know this increase will be driven by the expansion of water as it warms—warmer water takes up more space—and the melting of ice. But the effects of warming water and melting ice on sea-level rise are expected to vary from area to area. And the melting of ice of the Antarctic and Greenland presents the largest uncertainty for the future, but air, land and water also play roles in changes to sea level. For example, sea level near the ice getting melt actually decreases, because the ground under the melting ice rises as the heavy ice disappears.
Climate change is expected to change ocean currents and the winds that help drive ocean currents. These changes will affect the distribution of heat within the oceans, and, as a result, affect changes in sea level.
Nowadays, scientists use two types of models to make predictions about the future of sea levels, but the two don’t agree. If scientists can't accurately predict sea-level increase for the coming years, the least we can do is measure what happening today with the help of the satellite, Jason-2, but it’s reaching the end of its operational life.
25. The first paragraph implies that_______ .
A. the rising sea levels mainly happens near the coast
B. people living in coastal communities have to move
C. scientists have ways to handle the rising sea levels
D. coastal cities are easily affected by the rising sea levels
26. What does the writer mean by saying "The ocean isn’t like water in a bathtub" in the third paragraph?
A. The rising sea level is hard to tell.
B. The ocean can be easily controlled.
C The ocean isn’t equal to a bathtub in size.
D. There is too much water for us to control.
27. According to the text, which of the following shows the right cause and effect?
①climate change; ②ocean currents; ③the winds; ④changes in sea level; ⑤the distribution of heat
A. ①→⑤→③→④→② B. ①→③→②→⑤→④
C. ③→④→⑤→②→① D. ①→⑤→③→②→④
28. What problems will scientists meet with in predicting future climate changes?
A. It's too difficult to measure what's happening.
B. Types of models for prediction are difficult to set up.
C. There will probably be no satellites to help the scientists.
D. There aren’t enough scientists studying the changes of sea levels.

Six months before she died, my mother moved into an old people's home. I visited her when I was41. She was sitting in the living room with about fifteen other residents(居民), half of them42. The room was clean and quiet, with flowers and pictures, and the care assistants were kind. The television was on, and the only other43was snoring(鼾声). People kept still and only44when they needed to go to the bathroom. It was45. Mother missed her46(my niece, aged 7), but I knew from my sister that she hated going to visit her there and, to be47, I couldn’t wait to get away myself.
So I was48 when finding a newspaper article about a new concept in old people’s homes in France. The idea is simple, but revolutionary:49a residential home(养老院) for the elderly with a primary school in the same building. The children and the residents eat lunch together and50activities such as music, painting, gardening and caring for the51which the residents are encouraged to keep. In the afternoons, the residents enjoy52or telling stories to the children and, if a child is feeling sad, there are always53arms to hug them. There are trips out and birthday parties too.
The children are happy because they get a lot more individual54and respond well because someone has55for them. And of course, they see illness and death and learn to56them. The residents are happy because they feel useful and57.They are more active and more interested in life when the58are around and they take more interest in their appearance too. And the staff are happy because this59the physical and psychological health of the residents and teachers have assistants to60with the children.

When I was about 12 years old, I really wanted a new bike! I 16my parents my birthday wish, but I knew there was little hope because my family could 17 have that money.
On my birthday my parents told me they had my 18 outside in the back yard. At once I 19 out to the yard. There was my bike, 20 it wasn’t the bike that I thought it would be. This one was pink, old and worn with age. It was so 21! I thought I 22 my parents’ feelings because I could see the disappointment 23 their faces and I was sure they could see it on mine. I 24 the old bike and rode it, feeling 25 that I had made my parents feel this way. So I put on a smile, rode as fast as I could and didn’t 26...
As time went by, I began to understand my parents gave me 27 much more than just a rusty(生锈的)old bike. They gave me a life lesson about 28. When you give something out of love, it doesn’t matter what it is in fact. What matters is the love that is in it. I like to remember this 29 because giving a gift is not about money. It’s about how much love you can feel from it. Do remember, a gift that 30 two dollars isn’t any less valuable(有价值的)than one that costs one hundred dollars, or even more.
