As he lay awake that night, Tony could hear his parents discussing his sister Alice's birthday. It was just two days away. Birthdays were always a lot of fun, even though there was no money for store-bought gifts. Nearly all of toys he and his sister had were homemade. There was nothing wrong with that, he knew. Like many families in this part, they were poor.
This birthday would be different, though. Alice was older now, and he'd seen how her eyes lit up when she saw the new doll at Honey House, a neighborhood store just down the road from their house.
How he longed for her to have it! An idea finally came to him just before he went to bed. After a quick breakfast the following morning, he placed a tin can and a piece of string in a large bag. Then he tied the bag to the handlebars of his bike and headed toward a village hill.
After a long journey, he reached his destination, the mango forest. There were already two other boys there. Tony grabbed his bag and set to work immediately. The smaller trees had already been picked over pretty well, but he was able to find a half-dozen mangoes before noon.
When the sun was high overhead, the hard work began. Nearly all of the taller trees held ripe mangoes but they were well beyond reach. The other boys took their fruit and went away. Tony used his pocket knife to cut a long piece of bamboo. Then he took the tin can from the bag, tied it to one end of the bamboo stick, and walked over to the base of mango tree.
He stayed there, holding the tin can high up into the tree. His efforts were occasionally rewarded when a mango dropped into the can. After a while his neck ached from looking upward, and his arms grew sore. He kept at it, though, and by late afternoon his bag was nearly full.

On the way back to town, Tony began to worry that the other boys might already have sold or traded their mangoes with Honey House.

The following morning, Alice walked into the kitchen and took a seat at the breakfast table.
I was a taxi driver, a father of a 16-year-old boy at that time. My son was good at school, and he would graduate from senior high school and go to university, but he was hesitating to choose his future job and he always changed his mind. I did give him advice but he didn't follow it. And one Monday morning, I stopped at New York Hospital when I found a well-dressed man coming over. He was waving to me. I waited patiently until he jumped into the taxi. "La Guardia Airport, please." He said.
As always, I wondered about my passenger. So I asked, "What do you do?" "I am working at the hospital." For some unknown reason, I decided to ask for his help.
"Could I ask a favor?" He didn't answer at first. But I continued, "I have a son, 16. He's doing well in school. He will graduate from senior high school. He wants a job this summer. Is there any possibility that you might get him a summer job?" After a minute, he said, "The medical students have a research project. Maybe he could fit in. Have him send me his school records." He searched his pocket and handed me a card.
That evening, when I got home, I pulled the card from my pocket. "Robbie," I said proudly, "This could be a summer job for you. Send him your school records." Robbie took the card and read it out loud, "Fred Plum, New York Hospital." "Is this a joke?" he said in doubt. After I shouted and threatened to cut off his pocket-money, Robbie promised to send off his grades the next morning.

We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.
Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom. Kind and caring, she always seemed to make people comfortable in her presence. For years she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local nursing home to help with her until I hit my preteen years. Suddenly, I was too caught up in my adolescent world to worry about helping others.
One particular summer day when I was twelve, Mom came into my room and told me to get up and meet her at the car. I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything? Eventually, I made my way outside. I imagined the lake water cooling my skin. Annoyed, I climbed into the car and slammed the door shut. I sat in silence, too upset to make a conversation.
"Tasha, would you like to know where we are going?" Mom asked calmly.
"I guess…" I murmured under my breath.
"Sweetheart, we are going to a children's shelter, I have been there before and I think it would benefit you,"she explained.
I felt a knot slowly form in my stomach. How was I supposed to help there?
When we reached the shelter, I was rather surprised. It was a large white Victorian home. As we approached the large front porch, wind bells played a calming tune while trees and blossoms welcomed us. Maybe this wasn't going to be so bad.
Mom rang the doorbell. The door flew open and we were led to the front room, where all of the children were playing. Toys were spread out across the floor. I noticed a baby whose body was scarred with wounds. The majority of the children had noticeable physical scars(伤疤)such as cuts, scratches and bums. What a terrible life they had had before they moved here! My heart sank.
Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, "A fight! Let's go and see!"
"No," said Henry. "Let us go quietly home and not meddle with(插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me. "
"You are a coward (懦夫), and afraid to go," said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.
But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn't want to play with him together.
Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys' laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.
A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 a.m. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.
I walked to the door and knocked. "Just a minute," answered a weak, elderly voice.
After a long time, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.
I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly towards the car.
She kept thanking me for my kindness. "It's nothing," I told her.
"I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated."
"Oh, you're such a good man." She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, "Could you drive through downtown?"
"It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly.
"Oh, I'm in no hurry," she said. "I'm on my way to a hospice (临终医院). I don't have any family left. The doctor says I don't have very long."
I quietly reached over and shut off the meter (计价器) . For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.
Sometimes she'd ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
At dawn, she suddenly said, "I'm tired. Let's go now." We drove in silence to the address she had given me.
"How much do I owe you?" she asked.
"Nothing." I said.
"You have to make a living," she answered. "Oh, there are other passengers," I answered. She said thanks to me, but she looked so sad.

The boy took the note but he moved away slowly.
"You, Tom! Run!" called the father. "If you are not back in half an hour, I will punish you."
But the words had little effect. The boy's feelings were hurt by the unkindness of the parent.
"I never saw such a boy," said the father, speaking to a friend. "My words make no difference to him."
"Kind words often prove most powerful," said the friend. "Kind words are like the gentle rain. They develop and strengthen good feelings. Try a few kind words."
An hour passed, but his boy wasn't back. The father felt very angry with the child.

The One I'm Grateful to
Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus (马戏). Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn't have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were wellbehaved, all of them standing in line, twobytwo behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband's hand, looking up at him as if to say, "You are my knight in shining armor."
He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say, "You got that right." The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, "Please let me buy eight children's tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus."
The ticket lady gave the price. The man's wife let go of his hand. Her head dropped, and his lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, "How much did you say?"
The ticket lady again quoted the price. The man didn't have enough money.
How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn't have enough money to take them to the circus?Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.

Adult humpback whales living in the deep ocean, which are extremely huge, can be 16 metres long and weigh up to 35,000 kilos! Even babies are very big. To look for food and warm waters. They swim long distances, together in a group.
Last week, there was an oil spill (溢出) and a large area of the ocean was polluted severely. It was difficult for the sea creatures to see and swim there. Some even lost their lives. A baby whale, or calf, nearly died. The water dirty, though he tried his best to follow his companions, he swam away from the other whales and got lost.
The calf attempted to find his mother but he couldn't see anything. He was very tired so he let the water carry him. The next morning, the calf stranded (搁浅) on a beach in Didgery Bay. He couldn't breathe and he was too hot without water. Hearing the news of a humpback whale on the beach, crowds of people came to see the stranded whale, excited. Taking photos with their cameras, they all looked at and talked about the creature, without doing anything. The calf was becoming weaker and weaker.
Rawiri, a kind-hearted boy, loved whales, reading books and watching films about these amazing creatures. He wanted to work with animals when he grew up. On seeing what happened on the beach, Rawiri walked over to the whale and touched him gently. The calf's skin was covered in a layer of oil. All the other people just looked and took photos. Suddenly, Rawiri turned to the crowd and shouted, "Come on! We must help the whale. It's dying!"
Some people from the crowd answered, "It's too big! What can we do?" Some adults smiled loudly. They thought Rawiri was just a idealistic kid.
But Rawiri had a plan.
The summers in my hometown of Desert Springs were exceptionally hot, and all that people wanted to do was nothing but swimming in the public pool. This also meant that the most coveted (令人垂涎的) summer job for a high school student was to be a swimming instructor. You got to spend the whole summer in the pool and it was really glamorous (有魅力的), too!
However, I did not get a job as a swimming instructor. I tried really hard—I'm a good swimmer and I practiced my interview answers for weeks beforehand, but the pool offered me a job as a lifeguard instead.
Being a lifeguard wasn't nearly as fun or glamorous as being a swimming instructor. Mostly, being a lifeguard meant sitting next to the pool, sweating in the hot sun, and making sure everyone obeyed the rules.
"Being a lifeguard is an important job," my dad kept reminding me, "and you have to be one of the best swimmers in the whole town. If someone gets hurt or in distress in the pool, it's your job to rescue them." I knew that, and I wanted to do well at such an important job, but I was still disappointed. No one at school next year would be impressed with a story of how I sat in a chair all summer and got sunburnt.
But finally I took the job anyway. Once I began work, I quickly learned that being a lifeguard was much more involved than I thought. With half of the town at the pool at any given time, there were a lot of people to keep an eye on.
I was also still jealous of the swimming instructors, who I could see every day from my seat in the lifeguard chair, which was almost eight feet tall to give me a good view and right by the side of the pool.
The swimming instructors always looked like they were having so much fun, giving their lessons and playing around during their breaks in the cool, inviting water.
One afternoon, midway through the summer, I was arguing with a group of elementary schoolers about the no running rule when the sound of a woman shouting caught my attention. "Carey! Carey!" I glanced around and saw a woman searching frantically (疯狂地) for something. Immediately, my eyes went to the pool.

My Dad's Best Flower
I remember my first home was a small apartment on the second floor with a lovely and spacious balcony (阳台). When my mom was busy in the kitchen, she let me stay on the balcony watching the kids playing in the street. On that balcony I played sometimes with my elder sister, Maria. She was seven years old and when my mon was absent she was like a mother to me. The balcony was a great hobby place for my father. After his work he used to grow carnations (康乃馨) in the flower boxes. His carnations were red, pink and white, and everyone appreciated them for their beauty.
He took care of them with so much love and devotion. He dealt carefully with his flowers like a mother taking care of her baby. Many times I sat on the floor of the balcony for hours observing him and his lovely flowers with patience. He was always doing something on that balcony. He was watering them every day, cleaning the balcony floor, changing the potting soil and when the stems (茎) were thick, strong and high enough, he started his improvement operation like a doctor.
My dad took a tiny knife and with his left hand he held the stem of the carnation and measured the height. Then he made a small mark on the stem with his finger. Afterwards he made a sharp cut with the knife, just enough to fit in a grain of barley (插穗的芽). Then he bandaged the stem with a small bandage. His job was then to water the plants and to take care of them. "No one should touch them", he said to mom. Every day, when he came home from work he went straight to the balcony.
Mom used to tell us: "Do not touch daddy's flowers." For us it was a fascinating experience to watch how the small stems were growing and making flowers. When the carnations had grown big enough, my dad enjoyed watching them every day. We the kids did too.

Jenny stared at the store window longingly. There was nothing in this world that she wanted more than a Happy Hannah doll and all that currently separated her from the hottest doll of the holiday season was a thin piece of glass and S29. 95 plus tax. Unfortunately, Jenny didn't even have the 95 cents, so she let out a deep sigh and continued walking home.
Suddenly, a pink rectangle(矩形)in the snow caught her eye. Jenny walked over and realized it was a leather wallet. She removed it from the snow, and opened the wallet to find a thick pile of folded green bills and two plastic cards. One was a credit card and the other an ID.
Jenny stared at the old woman in her ID photo. The woman had a beautiful smile that reminded Jenny of her grandma. Jenny sighed and then she put the wallet into her purse. She turned around and walked in the direction from which she came.
Jenny's heart beat quickly as she entered the store. She had long dreamed about this moment, but something didn't feel right about it As she approached a neat pile of Happy Hannah dolls, she pushed away her feelings. She grasped one Happy Hannah dolly.
As Jenny approached the register, the Happy Hannah Show theme song began playing. It was her mobile pone. It was her grandma In one hand she held the Happy Hannah doll and in the other she held the phone on which her grandma was calling. Jenny's heart was filed with love and appreciation as she thought of her sweet old grandma She put the doll down and picked up the phone call.
"Hi Grandma? I'm going to be a little bit late tonight. I've got to drop something off… Yeah, it was good… OK… Alright… I love you too.". Jenny left the store and walked through the melting snow all the way to the other side of the town. She though of her grandma as she rang the bell at 301 West Street.

As I was coming into Middle School, Grade Six, I was really excited because my friend Jennifer was going to be in the same Middle School as me! At first things were great, she introduced me to her fiend, Amy and we had lots of fun together. Then things started to change. Jennifer was very controlling: I couldn't make new friends, because if I hung out with different people, she would decide that I was "mad at her and Amy". So I didn't make new friends, and pretty soon being Jennifer's friend became a battle between Amy and me.
Jennifer wanted to be the "leader" of our little group. Amy and I were never partners in class projects or gym; it was always "Who gets the privilege (荣耀) of being Jennifer's partner." It was either Jennifer liked me and she left Amy out or Jennifer liked Amy and she left me out. Amy and I both wanted to be Jennifer's number one. Being Jennifer's friend became the most important thing in the world.
I always waited for Jennifer and Amy after classes, so we could walk together to our next class. Amy and Jennifer chatted by Jennifer's desk as Jennifer packed her books up and I waited by the door. Sometimes when they left, they'd walk right past me. No "Thanks for waiting". No "Sorry we took so long". It was as if they couldn't even see me. Yet I still waited after every single class.
Most of the time we gossiped (传播流言蜚语) about people, and I soon realized that nobody was good enough for Jennifer. Jennifer had a list of bad things about everybody, even Amy. And I'm sure she had a list of bad things about me, too. After months of living through school this way, I had really changed. I was moody, depressed, lonely, and I didn't smile much. I spent lots of days trying not to cry. I felt so left out.

I frowned as I watched the movers (搬运工) packing things into our space vehicle. It was bad enough we had to move, but to Mars. I was hoping to get a puppy (小狗)this summer, not a one-way ticket to a planet of red rocks.
"I know you're disappointed, Cassie." Mom said. "But I've been offered my dream job. And the rocket is first-class. We can travel Co Mars in eight days instead of eight months. We'll come back—finally."
As Mom went to answer a worker's question, I sat and pulled grass from the ground. There was no grass on Mars, I thought. Or flowers. Or animals. There's almost nothing alive on that red wasteland! If only Mom wasn't an aeronautical (航空)engineer and Dad wasn't a climatologist (气象学家). If they were roologisls, we could stay on Earth and hang out wilh animals!
Mom called, saying the vehicle was ready for launch. I walked slowly behind my parents. If only I had a puppy, then maybe moving to Mars wouldn't feel so awful.
The flight was fast! Soon we reached the red planet. Several of my parents' scientist friends welcomed us to space. We took a quick tour of the laboratories and everyone talked about things I didn't understand. Then, we paused at a door. Everyone stopped speaking and looked at me. Mom touched a button on the wall.

"We thought you might like to help out in here," Mom said to me.
Whether we notice it or not, our child is a little reflection of ourselves. They grow up looking more and more like us. They even have similar personalities and hobbies. And in some cases, the standard of choosing a good friend.
One day, my 10-year-old Jane said, "Mom, I made a new friend at school today. Can she come over tomorrow?" Her words made me extremely happy because Jane was a shy girl and I wanted her to make some friends to bring her out of her shell.
"Sure, honey, that sounds great." I said, thinking back to my own childhood best friend, Susan. We lived across the street from each other in Washington Heights, New York. We met at the age of 10, too. Like my daughter. I was shy and had trouble making friends. But Susan drew me out. She was one of the friendliest people in school, with shiny black hair and a mile-wide smile. Thanks to Susan. I was happy every day.
In senior high school, Susan went on a trip to Florida. This was the first time we had to be away from each other for a few days. "I'll be back soon and I will write to you as soon as I arrive." she told me. But I didn't get her phone call nor receive any mail from her. Soon, my family moved to New Jersey, making my hope of seeing Susan impossible.
Whenever I thought of him, tears came into my eyes.
The next day Jane brought her new friend home. "Hi, Mrs. Smith." the little girl said. Her hair was so shiny and black and she gave me a big smile. "My name is Jo. My mom will pick me up 2 hours later."

Losing a parent is one of the most painful parts of life. No matter how old we are when they leave us, it can be a heartbroken experience. Our memories are all that is left of them and happy reminders of their love turn into our most valuable treasures. That's how Mara Soriane feels about the teddy bear that she tragically lost in her recent move to a new apartment.
Diagnosed with cancer, Mara Soriano's mother Marilyn, gave her daughter the bear as a gift in 2017. After her mother's death last June, the gift became even more special. "That bear was basically the last reminder of my mom. It was her voice that accompanied me," she said in an interview.
The fluffy toy didn't cost a lot, but it contained a recording of her mother's voice telling her that she loved her and was proud of her. The bear, called Mama Bear, was in the backpack that contained electronics like an iPad and a Nintendo Switch. When the bag was stolen last week during the move, the 28-year-old was heartbroken, not for the gadgets, but for Mama Bear.
Mara posted a photo of her and her Mama Bear on Instagram, explaining the importance of the bear. Millions of users were touched by the story. More and more people were talking about the bear, but there was no good news for Mara. So again and again she posted online about the item and the story behind it, hoping it could catch move viewer's attention in a big way.
Actor Ryan Reynolds was moved by Mara's story and then posted a plea(请求)for Mama Bear's safe return. "I think we all need this bear to come home," he wrote. Along with the message, he also offered a $5,000 reward for the people who found the bear.

Luckily, the Internet did its thing. The email was from the women who sent the bear back. |
The darkness was gathering as she wobbled (摇晃) in high heels along the side of the highway. The car had come to an unexpected stop, and like a normal teenager she did the only thing she could think of... get out and walk.
It was cold and late, and home was far away. This could be a long night. If only someone would stop and offer her a ride. She prayed for help and dragged herself forward.
The lights of a truck shone from behind as it approached. "Maybe he will stop," she hoped. The brake lights flashed on as it stopped. Next moment, the car door opened. A wordless invitation was extended and she understood. Without hesitation, the girl climbed up into the seat and closed the door. Slowly the truck pulled back onto the road and disappeared into the night, never to be seen again.
I woke up in a cold sweat, frightened. Was it a dream or was it a vision? It was unbelievably real, and the girl was my daughter! I jumped from my bed and ran to her room. Her bed was empty.
I stood in horror trying to think why she hadn't come home. As the mental fog began to lift, I remembered she was visiting her friend that evening. Perhaps she stayed there for the night. It was 1:30 am, but I raced to the phone and dialed a number.
"Hello?" The voice was heavy with sleep.
"Hey. Sorry to wake you. Becki didn't come home tonight and I was wondering if she stayed at your place."
"No, she left here a few hours ago. She should have been home at least by midnight!" The voice on the other end began to reflect my own panic.
Over the next forty-five minutes I alternated between lying in pray and pacing the floor in anxiety.
At 2:15 am lights appeared as a car turned up our long driveway. I could tell immediately that it was not my daughter's car.
