    You Are Not Alone

书面表达

When I arrived at 6 a.m. in the large hospital kitchen, Rose was already checking name tags on the trays (托盘).

Hi, I'm Janet." I tried to sound cheerful, although I already knew Rose's reputation for being impossible to work with. "I'm scheduled to work with you this week."

Rose stopped what she was doing and peered over her reading glasses. I could tell from her expression she wasn't pleased to sec a student worker.

“What do you want me to do? Start the coffee?” I asked.

Rose coldly nodded and went back to checking name tags.

I filled the 40-cup pot with water and began making the coffee when Rose yelled, “That's not the way to make coffee.” She stepped in and took over.

Nothing I did pleased her. All morning, her eagle eyes missed nothing and her sharp words hurt.

Totally exhausted, I trudged the six blocks home late that June afternoon. As a third year university student working my way through school, I had never before met anyone like Rose.

Fighting back tears, I wrestled with my dilemma alone in my room. "What shall I do?" The answer caught me completely by surprise. I needed to love Rose.

Working with Rose the next morning, I ignored the hurtful remarks thrown in my direction and did things Rose's way as much as possible. As I worked, I silently began to surround Rose with a warm blanket of love. Over the next few days, an amazing thing began to happen. My focus shifted from what she was doing to me and I started seeing Rose as the hurting person she was. Then her icy tension began to melt away.

Throughout the rest of the summer, we had numerous opportunities to work together. Each time, she seemed truly happy to see me. Her bitterness gave way as she started opening up. As I worked with this lonely woman, I listened to her, something no one else had done. I learned that she was burdened by elderly parents who needed her care and her own health problems.

The days slipped by quickly as I finished the last several weeks of my summer job. I soon would be returning as a full-time university student and say goodbye to Rose.

"Why did you do this without asking for my permission first? Don't you know it's a total waste of time and it will have bad influence on your study?" That's what my mother yelled at the tenyearold me when she found that I had signed up for an English storytelling competition.

I bowed my head; yes, she was right. By then I was entering Grade Six, faced with the biggest challenge yet to come—the examination to enter my dream junior high school. For that, I had given up my beloved piano lesson, my favorite cartoon program and even the joyful weekend family reunion with my cousins. I wouldn't be surprised at all if my verystrictuniversityteacher mother got angry at me when I chose to do anything that had little to do with study at that important moment. In her opinion, if I hadn't spent all my time on my study I would have difficulty in entering my dream junior high school.

But that's not all to it. Now please take a good look at the twentyyearold me, and imagine what I was like when I was ten. Here are the key words:nervous, shy, tonguetied when facing strangers, and essentially a bookworm. These signs looked fatal (致命的) to my mother, and possibly to you, too; she thought that I could be anything but a good public speaker.

Well, I myself actually said no to my English teacher at first, because I had never done anything like that before and I was afraid. But he told me that—since I liked reading so much, why not try to tell a story I love to everyone? He also promised me that the judges were not frightening at all; just think of them as carrots and cabbages in a vegetable garden.

    Paragraph 1

The tenyearold me was persuaded by my teacher's words. ……

    Paragraph 2

Apparently surprised by my response, my mother looked as if she was close to another outburstbut she only sighed. ……

My son Ben had barely heard of his cousins Marcia and Juli before we moved to their hometown. Since wed become neighbors, I thought he should get to know them. So, I invited the cousins over for a meet-and-greet one afternoon.

When the bell rang, Ben rushed to open the door. In came Marcia, a chatty, retired schoolteacher in her 70s. Dragging behind her, relying heavily on his walking stick, was her over-eighty-year-old husband Juli, who used to be a sports lover. Not having seen him since I'd become a mom, I wondered whether he was kid-friendly. With one glance, I quickly decided that he probably wasn't.

After the introductions, we sat down to have a chat. Ben, who was 4 at the time, stared curiously at the cousins. Suddenly, he eyed Julis walking stick, which stood right beside his chair. "Why do you have a stick? " he asked abruptly.

Juli paused for a while as he hadn't expected my son to speak to him. Then he seemed pleased that Ben had noticed something about him. He briefly explained, and invited Ben to try out the walking stick. Excited, Ben stepped up, took it in hand and walked with it around the room. The serious look on Julis face softened as he watched. That afternoon, Ben popped in and out of the room several times to have fun with his new friend. Toward the end of the visit, Ben sneaked over to Juli, wordlessly climbed onto his lap and gave him a hug. After a little surprise, Julis lips curved into a subtle smile.

During the following two years, Juli often came to babysit Ben. The two would call each other buddy and laughed loudly together, even though one was much older.

One summer evening, unexpectedly, I received a painful call saying that Juli had just passed away, which came as a shock to me. I gently told Ben about the terrible loss, explaining that Juli was 85. "That was so young!" Ben shouted between tears.

Once there was a slave named Androcles, who was so badly treated by his master that he resolved to run away from him. He therefore secretly left his master's house and hid himself in a forest, some miles distant from the city.

After wandering about for some time, he came to a large cave, and overcome by hunger and tiredness, he lay down in it, and soon fell fast asleep.

He was suddenly awakened by the roar of a wild beast; a great lion stood right at the mouth of the cave. There was no way he could escape!

Androcles expected nothing else than to be at once torn to pieces, but to his great surprise, the lion came gently towards him, without showing any signs of anger. It gave forth a low and mournful (悲哀的) sound, as if it were begging for his assistance. As the lion approached him, he noticed that one of its feet was swollen.

He then went up to the lion, took hold of the wounded paw (爪子), and examined it as a surgeon would examine a patient. He was not long in finding out the cause of the swelling; for he saw in the ball of the foot a very large thorn (刺). The slave pulled out the thorn, and pressed out of the wound a quantity of matter, which gave the lion immediate relief.

Then, the lion began to show his gratitude by every means in his power. He jumped about like a playful spaniel (西班牙猎犬), wagged his great tail, and licked the hands and feet of his physician. From that moment Androcles became his guest; the lion always shared his prey.

The slave continued to live like this for several months. At length, wandering carelessly through the woods, he was seized by a company of soldiers who were sent by the master to search for him.

The Voice of Rigo

Rigo had a loud voice. People were always telling Rigo to be quiet. His mother would tell him to use his quiet voice inside the house because the baby was asleep. His father would ask him to speak quietly in the car so that he could concentrate on his driving. His teacher would tell him to talk quietly so that he would not bother others who were studying.

Not only did he have a loud voice, but Rigo liked to talk a lot. Whenever he had time, he would talk with his classmates, sharing everything he considered fun. He liked to yell and shout. Sometimes he just yelled," Hey!" for no reason. He liked the sound of his very loud voice for he thought it had more penetrating (穿透的) power than that of an actor. But not everyone felt the same way.

When Rigo shouted goodbye as he left for school, his mother shook her head," Rigo! Be quiet!" When his father drove him to school, Rigo said," Hey! There's Chris!" He pointed at his friend, who was walking to school. His father shook his head."Rigo, use a quiet voice in the car." At school, his teacher talked to him three times about using his quiet voice. His classmates shook their heads, throwing an upset look at him when he talked aloud.

Later, Rigo had to sit by himself for a while. His teacher wanted him to practice being quiet. Rigo had to sit quietly for five minutes. It felt like five hours or five days. When the five minutes was up, Rigo went to his desk and sat quietly. It was not easy.

After school, Rigo was waiting for his father when he saw Chris again." Hey!" he yelled." Chris!Hey!"The headmaster was walking by. Rigo was sure he was going to get in trouble for his loud voice. He looked quickly at the ground. Maybe the headmaster would keep walking.

Paragraph 1

The headmaster stopped and looked at Rigo.

Paragraph 2

He said goodbye to the headmaster and ran to get in his father's car cheerfully.

Jim and Andy walked along the beach, looking for an adventure. They joked that some day they would find a talking fish or a mermaid(美人鱼) or a bottle with a treasure map inside. So far they had only found shells and rocks and seaweed. Today though was different. The boys felt excited.

Sea crabs(螃蟹) scampered(奔跑) on the rocks, up one side and down the other. They were quick and lively. The tide didn't seem to ever wash them away. Then Jim saw a fish. It was stranded (搁浅) on the beach, just flopping(笨拙移动) around.

    "Can it talk?" Andy asked.

"It looks like any other fish, " Jim said. He picked it up gently and carried it to the water.

"Do you think it will grant us any wishes?" Andy laughed.

The boys watched as the silver fish sped off through the water. "No. Maybe next time. "Jim grinned.

As the two friends walked farther down the beach they came upon a bottle. It was green with a cork (软木塞) in the mouth.

"Our luck will change. Does it have a map inside or a genie(神怪)?" joked Andy. Andy reached down and picked up the bottle. He rubbed it. Nothing happened. He pulled on the cork. Nothing happened. He shook it. Nothing happened.

"Try the cork again. I bet the genie is waiting for us to release him. Or we'll find a treasure map and have a real adventure," Jim exclaimed.

Andy tugged(用力拉) again on the cork. He wiggled(扭动) it back and forth. He twisted (旋转;扭) it around and around. Finally, it popped out(弹出) without breaking. Andy shook the bottle. Nothing came out. Looking inside he couldn't see anything. Jim looked too and shook his head. Empty.

"It's just an old wine bottle, " Jim complained. He grabbed the bottle and tossed(扔) it back onto the sand.

Lungs nearly bursting, I struggled to lift my head out of the water. Inch by inch, my tired body reached for the end of the pool.

The extent of my swimming career was purely recreational, while the competitive swimmers nearby thought nothing of the seemingly simple task of a 500-meter swim test. Pushing myself to finish what I had started, I could only think: why not take the easy way out?

Earlier that week, I had turned in my first job application at a local pool. Overqualified, I was hired on the spot. However, the tasks were boring: helping confused visitors and measuring the height of children before they went down the slide, those sorts of things. I was capable of more.

So a swim test was required, establishing the mere fact that I was not completely helpless in a pool. Midway through, the manager administering the test remarked, "This looks really easy for you. Why aren't you applying to become a guard?"

"The thought hadn't crossed my mind."

"Well, lifeguarding demands more responsibility, strength and respect. Thus the position pays $2 more per hour. Your swimming skills are strong enough. All you need to do is complete a certification class."

Inside I was unsure of myself, but his words inspired me-You never know what you are capable of until you force yourself to do it.

Soon I passed the swim test. All left was to practice and learn first aid, CPR(心肺复苏), and procedures for different land and water-based emergencies.

Work started soon. A well- intentioned yet anxious feeling in me soon passed. Days, weeks, and months went by without incident; emergencies were rare. The skills and training I had so carefully studied and acquired seemed unnecessary.

Today appeared to be another uneventful day. However, shortly after the other guards signaled to the children to exit the pool, I noticed one boy was still in the middle while the others had climbed up.

The other day I was travelling to San Antonio by train to visit my sister. The train was a little crowded and there was a young man sitting next to the window. Since it was a hot day, I wanted that window seat more than anything else at that time. As a young lady, I thought the young man would give me the seat if I asked him. So I smiled at him and asked whether he could give up his seat and take another one. To my surprise, he said that he needed that seat and refused my request. I had no choice but to take the seat next to him.

The train was crossing station after station. The weather was so hot that the scenery (风景) outside the window could not attract my interest. I had nothing to do, so I started to focus my attention on the young man and stare at him up and down. He wore a blue shirt and there was a shawl (披巾) on his legs. He did not even rise from his seat once, which made me feel a little bit strange. Moreover, only a madman would use a shawl in such hot weather, I thought.

After the five-hour long journey, the train arrived at the final stop. I picked up my bag and stood up, waiting for the door to open. I gave a neglectful (不经意的) look at the young man and asked, "The train has arrived at the final station. Are you not getting off?" Hearing my words, he began to smile at me and said in a calm voice, "Someone has to come for me and take me off the train because I can't do it by myself." I gave my foil attention to his legs, only to find there was nothing under that shawl!

After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, "What is this?"The son said, "Father, I have just now told you, it's a crow!"

After a little while, the old father again asked his son for the third time, "What is this?"

At this time some expression of irritation was felt in the son's tone when he said to his father with a rebuff. "It's a crow, a crow. "A little while later, the father again asked his son the fourth time, "What is this?"

This time, the son shouted at his father, "Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times' IT IS A CROW'. Are you not able to understand this?"

A little later the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered diary, which he had maintained since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page. When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:

Recently I graduated from high school, and as a gift I received a huge hunch of flowers, 40 to be exact! I had so many that I didn't know what to do with them. The next weekend my niece and nephew, Sue and Mike, aged 6 and 7, came and suddenly I had an idea. I might let them give out these flowers to people they met on the street, and in this way they could learn how to be friendly to others. So I told them about my plan and explained that these flowers would make people feel happy and smile. They loved the idea and were eager to have a try. So at once we took every single flower and tied a smile card to it. We then went to the street with the flowers.

The first flower went to a policeman. As soon as she saw the policeman, my niece ran up to him and handed him a flower. His smile was so big, but hers was even bigger!

In no time, we neared the end of our flowers. It was lunch time and we went to Subway for lunch. There the kids gave a flower to the waitress, who was really excited to receive the flower. As we were eating our lunch, the waitress came up to the kids with two big chocolate cookies! She said the chocolate cookies were for them and that she really liked the flower! As they ate the cookies, my niece and nephew looked at me with the biggest smiles I had ever seen.

On a cold windy day, a poor boy tried to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door. Wandering on the street, he was not a successful seller. What's worse, he found that he only had one dime(一角硬币) left. His empty stomach reminded him constantly that for days he hadn't eaten anything. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house. Hesitantly he knocked at a door, thinking about what to say when it opened. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. "What can I do for you? " asked the young woman. The boy paused for a while "Would you please give me some. . . a drink of water? " the boy dare not to look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony boy and thought he might need something to give him energy so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup, he drank it up slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you? " "You don't owe me anything, " she replied with a warm smile on her face. "My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness. "

Deeply moved, he said sincerely, "Then I shall thank you from the bottom of my heart. " As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in God and the whole human race. As a matter of fact, he was about to give up and quit before that point. Years later the young woman became critically ill. However, the local doctors were unable to give the effective medical treatment. Finally they sent her to a hospital in the big city, where specialists can be called in to cure her rare disease. Terry and Anna are a lovely couple living in Australia. They have been together for almost a year and are ready to take the next step together.

For their one-year anniversary, Terry wanted to surprise his girlfriend with a special present. He decided that he was going to make a necklace for her. He made the main piece of the necklace out of Tasmanian wood, which is a high-quality ornamental timber (木材) used for making furniture and cabinets, as well as other small objects. It was the perfect material for a necklace. That wasn't all. Terry had hidden something within the necklace. This took a lot of time to make sure it was concealed properly. He then purchased a chain and put the two together to make a necklace.

Terry took Anna out to a lovely dinner for the anniversary. After the dinner, he took his handmade necklace out and presented it to her. Anna loved the necklace so much that she put it on as soon as she got it and never took it off again.

Anna and Terry loved traveling together, but Anna was always afraid of flying, and living in Australia provided her with the opportunity to find great vacation destinations that didn't require her to fly. However, Terry wasn't content with traveling in Australia. Though incredibly afraid of flying, Anna decided to face her fear and take a flight.

The couple decided to take a trip to Scotland. They were eager to see the country and explore everything it would offer. Anna was especially excited, as she would have an opportunity to see a friend that she hadn't seen for years.

It was almost two years since Terry had given Anna the necklace. Terry had the idea to open Anna's necklace while they took a trip to the caves in northern Scotland. That was where Terry decided to make his big reveal.

My 11-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, started to talk about quitting swimming, which broke my heart because she loves swimming. So when the swim season began, I cut a deal with her. She would practice three times a week and try really hard. I wouldn't make her compete in the swim meets. Elizabeth does not like swim meets. She gets horribly nervous but not because she wants to win. She doesn't care if she wins.

Recently, Elizabeth's team announced a special swim night: Members 11 and older would swim a timed 50 meters relay. It wasn't exactly a meet, because it would involve only team members. That was my view. Elizabeth argued that it absolutely was a meet because there would be races. I told Elizabeth I really wanted her to go. She fought back angrily but finally agreed.

When the day of the special swim night arrived Elizabeth was nervous. She was the youngest person and shorter by at least a foot than most of the other kids. She panicked when it was time for the T-shirt relay. The relay works like this: One person from each relay team puts on a T-shirt, a pair of socks» and a swim cap; swims 50 meters; and gets out of the pool. She takes off the clothes and puts them on the next person, who then swims 50 meters. This continues until everyone on the team has completed a lap.

Then it was Elizabeth's turn to swim. She seemed to swim faster in the T-shirt and socks than she did when she wasn't wearing them. Approaching the halfway mark, Elizabeth was in the lead. Suddenly, somebody noticed that one of Elizabeth's socks had fallen off and was floating (漂) in the pool. A desperate call came into Jimmy Gilleece's bar. A newly married woman who had spent the afternoon at his dive(潜水) beach bar couldn't find her wallet. She didn't care about her ID, credit cards, or $150 in cash—but her wedding ring was inside.

Gilleece didn't like the idea that stealing could have occurred at his place, so he set out to find the wallet. He spent hours looking through footage(片段) from 16 different surveillance cameras(监控摄像头), watching the woman's every step in the bar. At 4pm, the woman went to sit on a bench outside the bar and left when her taxi arrived. Within minutes, a young man in a hoodie(连帽衫) approached the bench, put something in his pocket, and walked off. Gilleece posted a picture on the bar's Facebook page.

Within hours, Gilleece got a text from 17-year-old Rivers Prather, who'd heard about the post from his sister. Prather admitted having taken the wallet and told Gilleece he'd done it because he hadn't eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but thought it was fake(假的), so he took the money and threw the wallet off the public docks(码头) into the ocean. Then he bought a sandwich. Gilleece, unsure whether he believed Prather, told the teen to meet him at the docks. There, they got to talking, and Prather told him that he wasn't getting along with his family and had been living in the woods for a week. Gilleece, a father of two, looked up and down Prather—his small figure, his red cheeks—and saw him for what he was: more of a kid than a criminal.

But the police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring, Prather could be facing crime charges. "He would be going to prison,” Gilleece thought to himself. "I had to help him somehow." So, Gilleece hired two divers to search the waters where Prather had thrown the wallet.

When Gilleece and Prather arrived at the docks at noon the next day, a policeman was already waiting there.

Just then a diver appeared out of the water.

At a medical clinic in Waterloo, Ontario, an elderly woman sat on the edge of a waiting room chair singing the Celine Dion tune "My Heart Will Go On." Other than a slight rhythmic rocking of her body to the Titanic theme song, she kept still, with her arms crossed elegantly over her chest. With little effort, she was able to send her sweet,high-pitched (尖声的) voice exploding into every comer of the clinic.

I had fun watching how people reacted. There was a lot of changing in seats, but mainly they awkwardly looked away and tried to pretend there was nothing out of the ordinary going on.

I was there with my father, who was getting a routine blood test, when the woman arrived. She settled into the seat directly across from my dad. Because she was so tiny, she was forced to sit on the edge of the chair so her feet could touch the floor. The position made it seem as though she were sitting forward to engage in conversation with him. She smiled at him, and he smiled back.

I was concerned about how my dad would react to the possible invasion of his space. He was 77 at the time and had been living with Alzheimer's (老年痴呆症) for several years. He was a brilliant and shy military man. When he was healthy,he tolerated people's eccentricities (古怪) dutifully but with silent disapproval. He considered it wholly bad mannered to bring too much unnecessary attention to oneself. Since Alzheimer's has a tendency to cause damage to a person's patience and self-control. Dad had got into a few challenging and unpleasant situations in the past. I couldn't help but think that this little woman was playing with fire.

Her singing began gently, like a quiet hum. I glanced over at Dad. His smile was gone, and he was staring right at her. She was staring back. I couldn't read his expression, but it seemed to be something like confusion. This wasn't an unusual state for him.

I wouldn't have achieved any success in writing without my grandma and my husband's encouragement.

The summer I turned 11 I spent two weeks with my grandparents. There were no other kids in the neighbourhood. I was afraid I would die of boredom. I missed my friends back in my hometown, and missed riding my bike everywhere. I even missed my brother and sister.

One afternoon Grandma was in the kitchen. "When's Grandpa coming home?" I asked. Maybe he'd take us for a ride out.

"He's out of town for a meeting and won't be home till tomorrow. " She opened the door and the heat came out.

"I'm bored," I said. "There's nothing to do here. "

"Oh, there's plenty to do," she said. "You just have to use your imagination. "

Oh, I had an imagination all right. At night I'd call to Grandma from the guest room, terrified that I heard a noise in the closet or saw a face at the window. "There's no one here but us," Grandma would say, rubbing my back until I fell asleep.

It's too bad that imagination deserted me in the daytime. "I can't think of anything," I said.

"How about a little trip?" she asked.

We walked along the brick sidewalks. We crossed the street. I saw the movie theatre. My heart began to race. I loved movies! But, no, Grandma walked right past the theatre. "Here we are," she said, stopping in front of a store. "I thought you might like to go to Switzerland. "

"But this is a bookstore," I said. Had the heat gone to Grandma's head?

She pushed open the glass door, nodded to the sales clerk and walked to the children's section. Her fingers danced along the covers of the books until they came to a thick volume bound in brown cloth. She pulled it off the shelf and handed it to me.

"Here you go. It's one ticket to the snow-covered Alps, Switzerland. "

I looked at the title. "Heidi?" I'd never heard of it. "Is it any good?"

"There's only one way to find out. It's about a girl who goes to stay with her grandfather (like you)!"
