The Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Ohio did the study. It was published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine. The study found a sixty-three percent increase in the number of people treated for rock climbing injuries in American hospitals.
The study said forty thousand people were treated in emergency rooms. The ankle was the most common body part to be injured.
The average age was twenty-six. Fifty-six percent of the injuries were to people twenty to thirty-nine years old. Women made up twenty-nine percent of the injured population. That is more than that in past rock climbing studies.
But many people think it is worth it. John Bachar said rock climbing felt like being on another planet. Dean Fidelman says it is a continual challenge and a beautiful form of movement. And, for Sarah Bowman, she has just started her way up the rocks.
Dean Fidelman said that he believes a climber's ego(自我价值感) can be his worst enemy on a rock.
A. Like many other sports, rock climbing can be dangerous.
B. Climbers in the study were from ages two to seventy-four.
C. The most common injuries were broken bones and sprains in legs and feet.
D. They try to move as silently up the wall as they can.
E. A recent study shows a sharp increase in rock climbing injuries between 1990 and 2007.
F. There's no other sport where you're really going up and down.
G. He said rock climbing is a high risk sport in which many people overestimate their abilities and underestimate the rock.

·Focus on positives

Nothing can hurt confidence more than being told that you aren't doing well. , so good public speaking training should develop those instead of telling you what you shouldn't do.
· If you find a public speaking course that looks as though it's going to give you lots of dos and don'ts, walk away! Your brain is so full of what you're going to be talking about.
As far as we're concerned, there are basically no hard and fast rules about public speaking. Your audience can be your friends.

Most importantly, good public speaking training should treat you as a special one, with your own personal habits. Your training course should help you bring out your personality, not try to turn you into someone you're not.
A. You aren't like anybody else
B. You already do lots of things well
C. Turn your back on too many rules

How Can I Fight Laziness?
Lazy people will never amount to anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind.
. Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.
Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. Others take a more proactive(主动的) approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone.
Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations(诱惑) that surround them. A television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much TV often contributes to laziness. Complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film.
Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. Couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately. Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others in the home may eventually follow your example and perform their own task. It is difficult to practice laziness when you are surrounded by motivated people.
Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling you to have more energy and help lift your spirits.
A.To fight family laziness, set an example.
B.One way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep.
C.Knowing how to fight laziness is important.
D.Finally, taking exercise regularly can help you fight laziness.
E. With strong determination, you will be able to achieve your goal.
F. Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for a child.
G. Laziness sets in when you no longer feel in charge of your own life.
Four Habits to Help you Succeed
We all want to succeed, whether it's in losing weight or learning the guitar. For those who have tried and failed, success seems difficult to understand. Why does one person succeed while another person fails?
⒈ Identify your core values.
Finding your core values is in line with (符合) creating inner motivation.Pick a handful of things and actually write them down. Remind yourself of your values every day, and reflect on whether you are honoring those values through your work.
⒉ Pick a goal and focus on it.
Choose one goal to start something large enough that will give you a sense of accomplishment, while adjusting well to your core values. Focus is key here.If you perform many tasks at a time, you might never complete your projects because they will take far too long.
⒊ Set a deadline for success.
Set a date for success. Identify when you hope to achieve your goal. By setting a time limit, you are making the process more real.
⒋
Failure can't be avoided when you take risks. By its very definition, the desire to succeed means you are risking failure. Many people tend to give up far too early. Don't fail into this trap! G. You can try to ask questions based on what they have said to you in previous responses.
Being a superhero to others
Ewan Drum has always liked superheroes. He likes how they help people. At age seven, he told his parents, “I want to dress up like a superhero and help the homeless.” Wearing his red superhero cape (斗篷), Ewan helped pass out 70 bag lunches to hungry people in a park in Detroit, Michigan. That's how Super Ewan was born.
People donated(捐赠) money and supplies (供给物), and Ewan took them to those in need.
When someone donated jugs(大罐) of water, Ewan and his family drove their car to get even more. They took the water to Flint, Michigan, a city that had unsafe drinking water. Another time, a businessman donated six turkeys(火鸡) for Thanksgiving. “In the end”, he says,“ we gave 64 turkey dinners to families all around Detroit.”
Ewan has a motto: Everyone can be a superhero to someone. At an event called the Hero Round Table, Ewan told the audience, “It's not hard to help people. You can keep some socks and food in your car to help people in need. You can help a neighbor with doing the garden. ”
It's been several years since Super Ewan started his task. Every month, he still visits the same park to hand out clothes, food, and supplies to people who are hungry or homeless —his Super Friends.
“No matter what, ”Ewan says, “I will always keep helping people.”

How You Open Your Car Door Matters to Cyclists
The "Dutch reach” isn't a new dance move or a random YouTube challenge. It's a simple move that can help prevent harm to cyclists. And you might keep your car door safe in the process, too.
Typically, a person sitting in the driver's seat of a car opens the door with the hand closest to it. It makes sense since doors are designed to be opened that way. But if you happen to do that at the wrong time, you may unknowingly create an obstacle for a passing cyclist. The cyclist might be knocked down off the bike. The car door is likely to be damaged by the fast-moving bicycle.
However, the car door design and long-time habits have made the process automatically. Luckily, there's a simple way to solve the problem. Open your car door with your other hand, using the Dutch reach. So instead of using your left hand, reach for the door handle with your right hand. At the very least, you'll look into your side view mirror to check for any traffic.
The Dutch are used to opening their car doors this way. All Dutch are taught it. It's part of regular driver education. The technique dates back about 50 or 60 years in the Netherlands. In 2016 an American named Michael Charney started the Dutch Reach Project. He wanted to popularize the practice in the United States. Charney's efforts may be paying off.
A. This will force you to turn your body.
B. Pull the handle and the door is open.
C. It is easy to do once you are used to it.
D. All you have to do is change how you open your door.
E. People are trying to change the way to open the car.
F. Clearly, the solution is for the person exiting the vehicle to check for traffic.
G. Several states now include the Dutch reach in their drivers' handbooks.
Body language is a form of communication without using words. This means that the person using body language is not fully aware that they are using it. Some psychologists say that body language actually communicates more information than using words.
Human beings seem to know about other people by nature through their body language even when they speak a different verbal language. It is likely that in human prehistory, body language was an important survival skill that helped us to display and tell the difference between threats and safety.
Body language can communicate negative emotions. When a listener crosses their arms against their chest, it can mean disagreement with the speaker. This can also be indicated when a listener leans(倾斜) away from the speaker. It can also mean disbelief.
Positive feelings are often shown through facial expressions, eye contact, and gestures. When a person looks in another person's eyes and then down at their lips, it usually means they have romantic(浪漫) feelings for the speaker. Standing or sitting straight with good gesture shows that a listener is taking the person's speech seriously.
When a person is lying, they tend to touch their face during the conversation. They may also blink(眨眼) too much or not blink at all. Body language can reveal a lot about people but it's important to remember that everyone's body language is a little different, so learning to properly "read" information through body language can be helpful in interpersonal communication.
A. Lots of body language is actually unconscious.
B. Body language includes the use of gestures and eye movements.
C. Body language can even reveal when a person's being dishonest.
D. A lack of eye contact can show a person is anxious or uncomfortable.
E. Smiling is obviously a universal sign of friendliness and appreciation.
F. People can practice body language to improve their ability to communicate.
G. Being able to "read" body language means being able to understand what a person thinks.

The jobs of the future have not yet been invented. By helping them develop classic skills that will serve them well no matter what the future holds.
1 Curiosity
Your children need to be deeply curious. Ask kids, "What ingredients (配料) can we add to make these pancakes even better next time?" and then try them out. Did those ingredients make the pancakes better? What could we try next time?
2 Creativity
True creativity is the ability to take something existing and create something new from it. There are a dozen different things you can do with them. Experimenting with materials to create something new can go a long way in helping them develop their creativity.
3 Interpersonal Skills
Understanding how others feel can be a challenge for kids. We know what's going on inside our own head, but what about others? Being able to read people helps kids from misreading a situation and jumping to false conclusions. "Why do you think she's crying?" "Can you tell how that man is feeling by looking at his face? If someone were to do that to you, how would you feel?"
4 Self-expression
There are many ways to express thoughts and ideas — music, acting, drawing, building, photography. You may find that your child is attracted by one more than another.
A. Encourage kids to cook with you.
B. And we can't forget science education.
C. We can give kids chances to think about materials in new ways.
D. So how can we help our kids prepare for jobs that don't yet exist?
E. Gardening is another great activity for helping kids develop this skill.
F. We can do this in real life or ask questions about characters in stories.
G. Being able to communicate ideas in a meaningful way is a valuable skill.
We usually interpret someone looking us straight in the eye during an interaction as a sign of trustworthiness. This is at least the case in the Western world.
But research is increasingly challenging this
standard view. In a competitive
environment where a negotiation is taking place
looking at another person directly in the eye can be a sign of competition and unkindness, rather than kindness.
While folk wisdom tells us eye contact is a sign of honesty and trustworthiness, these findings were not a surprise. Animals have direct eye contact not before engaging in kind behaviors but rather immediately before an attack. We humans seem to be carrying on this tradition by looking our opponent directly in the eye before we "attack".
What does this mean for the work place? In a competitive business environment, when taking part in negotiations or a business deal, for example, be aware that people who look you directly in the eye may not be as friendly as you think. In many Asian cultures, for example, looking a person of higher status in the eye is a sign of disrespect, while looking away signals respect.
And this must be fully understood. This means they most likely don't apply to social environments, such as spending time with friends, family or loved ones. In these cases, direct eye contact, often referred to as a "gaze", can still be a sign of intimacy (亲密) and kindness.
A. This may help you understand eye contact much better.
B. Eye contact is a sign of challenge and threat from another.
C. The study led by Jennifer Jordan shows quite the opposite.
D. All the experiments took place in a competitive environment.
E. We use eye contact as a marker of intimacy and straightforwardness.
F. Actually it can be rather upsetting when someone avoids eye contact.
G. If you want to express honesty and reliability, direct eye contact may indicate the opposite.
Clean eating does not have an official definition (定义), but it basically means that you avoid processed (加工过的)and packaged foods in favor of foods that are in their natural state. Then how to start clean eating?
Focus on fruits and vegetables. The basis of a clean eating plan should be whole, unprocessed fruits and vegetables.Include 1 or 2 servings of vegetables or fruit with every meal. If you don't like to wash and cut produce yourself, you can buy pre-washed and cut fresh produce.
Add 2 to 3 servings of whole grains (谷粒)each day. Whole grains should make up the majority of your food since they contain more fiber and nutrients (养分)than white grains. Lessen white bread, pasta, flour and rice. .Protein (蛋白质)helps to keep you feeling full for longer than carbs (碳水化合物)or fats, so make sure to get 2 to 3 servings of protein per day. All or most of the meals you eat should have 1 serving of protein.
Drink water as your main source of liquid. Make sure that you are drinking at least eight 8 glasses of water (240ml) daily. Drink water with your meals and between them to keep yourself hydrated (含水的). Try carrying a water bottle wherever you go and refill it as needed throughout the day!
A. Replace these foods with whole grains choices.
B. Fat helps with satisfaction, but too much fat will increase your overall calorie intake.
C. Water is very important to a clean eating plan.
D. It is a popular way to make sure that you are having healthier foods.
E. It is important to read labels (标签) when you are trying to eat clean.
F. Try to buy fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible.
G. Add a serving of protein to each meal.
Childhood obesity puts kids at risk for cardiovascular disease, bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, and potential social and psychological problems.
Of course, the CDC recommends healthy lifestyle choices—healthy eating, physical exercise. That is to provide a safe and supportive environment where healthy lifestyle choices can be made.
What don't kids need?Too much focus on overweight leads toward more weight gain.
A new data analysis of two studies found that children whose parents considered them to be "overweight" tended to gain more weight over 10 years than children whose parents considered them "normal weight". Children whose parents label them as "overweight" had a negative self-perception about their bodies. They were engaged in more attempts to lose weight.
The clear message from this study is that dieting is more likely to lead to weight gain, not weight loss, in both children and adults. Psychology researchers Eric Robinson and Angelina Sutin argue that the stigma of being labeled overweight as a child might actually gain weight in the future.
For the study, children's height and weight were measured at age 4 or 5, and parents were asked to describe whether they thought the children were best described as underweight, normal weight, overweight or very overweight. When the children were 12 or 13, they used images to best depict what they perceived their bodies to look like and were asked whether or not they engaged in any dieting behavior. Height and weight measurements were taken again when the children were 14 or 15 years old.
A. Labels and pressure around weight and weight gain.
B. Left untreated, these problems can continue into adulthood.
C. They also point out another important way to keep kids healthy.
D. The researchers cannot be certain about what is driving.
E. They analyzed the data from a study of Australian children.
F. But it actually contributed to weight gain over the 10-year period.
G. A number of mothers in this study suffer from depression and anxiety.
It's all about ME!
"Me". It's a small word with big meaning. Through interviews, I was able to discover what "me" means to other people, and how they have learnt to appreciate the beauty in themselves…
一 Psychologist, Dr Hart
|
Jade, 24, accounting manager As a song in Ugly Betty puts it, "It's a pretty person's world". I understand this more than most, as I'm a plain - looking girl who'd love to look good. So, ever since I discovered selfie (自拍) apps that could remove my freckles, enlarge my eyes and even slim my jawline, I've become addicted. I spend hours every day editing my selfies, posting them and eagerly checking my phone a hundred times for comments. Dad thinks I am a narcissist (自恋狂), but what I say is that my pictures aren't hurting anyone, so who cares? Dr Hart says: The image Jade presents to obtain the praise of others is false. |
|
Anthony, 21, college student I never really cared about my appearance. When I first moved into my dormitory at college, this made my roommates quite confused as they saw me in the same clothes day after day. Last month they registered me for a TV programme, A New You. But I was surprised at how good I looked after the makeover! For the first time in my life I saw myself as a handsome young man. At that moment, I realized that external beauty isn't totally worthless. It can be an expression of our personalities. Dr Hart says: It's true that inner beauty is very important, but external beauty shouldn't be completely ignored |
A. Each "like" builds up my confidence.
B. I didn't like being reviewed from head to toe at first.
C. It plays a part in the image we present to the whole world.
D. My anxiety drove me to try every means possible to lose weight.
E. And that meaning is as individual to each of us as the way we look.
F. People who pretend to be someone else tend to misjudge themselves.
G. Being healthy is beautiful and we should wear that beauty with confidence.
Listening to music is considered a good thing for adults. Indeed it is. Scientific studies have proved it. Music has so many good effects on our body, mind and mood that this world would certainly not be a good place without music. some parents think so and let their children learn or listen to music. But some parents don't know the importance of music to children. Here are some reasons why music is important to children.
First, music is good for children's intelligence. Studies have proved that children who learn music are likely to have higher intelligence than those who have no interest in or dislike music.
Music also has comforting effect on children and helps remove their stress. Today's children are under a lot of stress from schoolwork. Being under too much stress harms children's health.
some children are sad by nature. They seem to be lost in their own thoughts and don't take interest in their surroundings. In such cases, a method known as "music therapy" comes to their rescue. It changes their moods and places a new kind of spirit in them.
Music is also a universal language that children ought to learn. Our world has become a global village. Music can help them in understanding foreign cultures.
Now we can say that music is very important not only to adults but also to children. So children should be encouraged to learn music or listen to music.
A. Then, is music good for children?
B. Music can improve children's moods.
C. Luckily, listening to music can help them feel better.
D. Music is shared between every culture and generation.
E. Music can help you recognize and remember information better.
F. This is because the brain gets inspired by the rhythm (节奏) and tone of music.
G. People are getting more and more interested in other cultures and countries.
In a highly-connected world where your phone is always with you, information is being collected and shared every second, "So what?" you say. "I have nothing to hide." According to some experts, people may not understand the scope (范围) of the problem.
The problem is that while companies and data brokers are hovering up all the information they can, there are no laws governing what they can do with that information. Someone knowing that you ordered three extra-large pizzas for dinner last Friday night may seem harm-less enough, but there's a deeper principle at play. As cyber expert Bruce Schneider says, "Privacy is a basic human right, and a requirement for maintaining the human condition with dignity and respect."
We click "I Agree" without reading the user agreements. We say we will do one of those privacy checkups one day but we never quite get around to it. And that means your personal information could be used against you in the future in ways you can't imagine today.
So what can you do to protect yourself? If you're worried about your personal information getting lifted, don't hand over your name, address, or phone number easily. Besides, choose a paper receipt or no receipt rather than getting one via text or e-mail. To stop your phone acting as a tracker, also turn off Location Services for all apps except maps and others that expressly need to know where you are. You can do this in settings, under Privacy and Location.
A. Don't be so sure.
B. Yet we do little to block the spies.
C. Care about who owns and controls the data.
D. We don't want to prevent all Internet spying.
E. Privacy is not just about freedom from embarrassment.
F. You can minimize some unwanted spying by taking these measures.
G. That includes things you thought were private, such as your health data, beliefs and daily habits.
Reading is essential but how can one choose the right books to read and where can one find them? A few famous people may give you some helpful tips.
●Read books from past eras.
Otherwise, you'd be "completely dependent on the prejudices and fashions of your times, "just as Alert Einstein put it. "Somebody who reads only newspapers and books of contemporary authors looks to me like an extremely near-sighted person who dislikes eyeglasses, "he said.
Reading too wide a variety in too short a time would keep the teachings from leaving a lasting impression on you. Seneca the Younger, a first-century Roman philosopher, suggested that "you must linger(流连)among a limited number of master thinkers, and digest their works, if you would obtain ideas which shall win firm hold in your mind. "
●Shop at secondhand bookstores.
Virginia Woolf believed the works in secondhand bookstores have an attraction which the usual volumes of the library lack. Browsing through these hooks gives you the chance to run into something that wouldn’t have risen to the attention of librarians and booksellers.
Check out authors' reading lists.
In his 1940 guide How to Read a Book, American philosopher Mortimer J. Adler talked about low to choose books. He attached importance to those that other authors consider worth reading.
Mortimer wrote that "one way to understand them is to read the books they read. "
●Make the final decision by yourself.
It's you yourself who should choose what, how and when to read. Theodore Roosevelt recommended choosing books on subjects that interest you and letting your mood guide you to your next great read.
A. Interest is the best teacher.
B. Great authors are great readers.
C. Leave some room for older works.
D. Learn more about those great authors.
E. Don't jump too quickly from book to book.
F. There's no "best books" list that everyone should follow.
G. Usually they are much more selective in organizing their collections than secondhand book owners.
