The year is 2094. It has been announced that a comet (彗星) is heading towards the earth. Most of it will miss our planet, but two pieces will probably hit the southern half of the earth.

On 17 July, a piece four kilometres wide enters the earth's atmosphere with a massive explosion. About half of the piece is destroyed, but the remaining part hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and a huge hole is made in the sea bed. Huge waves are created and spread outwards from the hole. The wall of water, a kilometre high, rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometres an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned.

Before the waves reach South America, the second piece of the comet lands in Argentina. Earthquakes and volcanoes are set off in the Andean Mountains. The shock waves move north into California and all around the Pacific Ocean. The cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Tokyo are completely destroyed by earthquakes. Millions of people in the southern half of the earth are already dead, but the north won't escape for long. Because of the explosions, the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, and temperatures around the world fall to almost zero. Crops are ruined. The sun won't be seen again for many years. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later, no more than 10 million people remain alive.

Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the earth. The dinosaurs were on the earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the earth was hit by a piece of object in space. The dinosaurs couldn't live through the cold climate that followed and they died out. Will we meet the same end?

  1. (1) What is mainly described in the passage?
    A . A historic discovery. B . An event of imagination. C . The research on space. D . A scientific adventure.
  2. (2) Why can't the northern half of the earth escape for long?
A . Because the land is covered with water. B . Because wars break out among countries. C . Because people there cannot live at the temperature of zero. D . Because the light and heat from the sun cannot reach the earth.
  3. (3) By giving the example of dinosaurs, the author tries to prove            .
A . the human beings will die out in 2094 B . animals could not live in the cold climate C . the earth could be hit by other objects in space D . what happened 65 million years ago was an invented story

Paperless office was first coined in 1975.Four decades later, we're still chasing(追逐) the paperless office dream. Take the financial(金融的) industry for example—it is one of the slower industries to hug digital transformation. Many financial institutions today still send out trade confirmations by mail. I can tell you from first-hand experience that going paperless is by no means impossible. The Centric Digital office is a paperless work environment where all the office operations go digital, which has amazed our business partners.

Actually, companies need to stress the benefits of a digital culture for communication. Going paperless can save time and money. You could say goodbye to costly repairs, office supply orders, wasted employee time and so on. Besides, forbidding paper in the office forces information to be 100% digital, where you can make endless quantities of backups(备份), and easily increase transparency(透明). Not to mention, top talents want to work for digital companies.

You might think the secret to a paperless company is purely technology. Well, not really. Thanks to products like iPads, smartphones and cloud services, the ability to go paperless is highly accessible. Yet, even with all this technology, companies continue to rely on paper. It's not because they don't have access to the technology, but because they're lacking the policies, organizational structure and a strong desire to change. In order to go paperless, companies need to change the way they think and operate. The decision needs to be made and carried out and everyone needs to work together to make it.

Yes, the paperless office has been a very long time in the making—but it no longer has to be. With numerous quantities of software, services, apps, and technology available today, the only thing we need to do is make the decision to go paperless and see it through.

  1. (1) The practice of going paperless in the financial industry is            .
    A . encouraging B . disappointing C . satisfying D . disgusting
  2. (2) A paperless company can             .
A . raise the staff salary B . attract talented staff C . promote product sales D . increase time consumption
  3. (3) What actually prevents people from going paperless?
    A . The equipment available. B . Operational research. C . The company policies. D . Technological limitations.
  4. (4) The writer believes going paperless
A . still needs a long time preparation B . offers people a lot more chances C . should be made to happen right now D . brings convenience and trouble as well

What will man be like in the future—in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make guesses, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time.

Let us take an obvious example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is relatively a short period of time, so we may assume that man will continue to grow taller .Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain's capacity. As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more ,and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change to the head; in particular, the forehead will grow larger.

Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses .But over a very long period of time it is likely that man's eyes will grow stronger.

On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life.

But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in the course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald.

Perhaps all these give the impression that in the future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may well be true .All the same, in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and emotions similar to our own.

  1. (1) The passage mainly tells us that         .
A . man's life will be different in the future B . future man will look quite different from us C . man is growing taller and uglier as time passes D . man's organs' functions will be on the wane
  2. (2) The change in man's size of forehead is probably because         .
A . he/she makes use only 20% of the brain's capacity B . his/her brain has grown larger over the past centuries C . the other 80% of his/her brain will grow in due time D . he/she will use his/her brain more and more as time goes on
  3. (3) Which of the following is TRUE about a human being in the future?
A . He is hairless because hair is no longer useful. B . He has smaller eyes and wears better glasses. C . His fingers grow weaker because he doesn't have to make use of them. D . He thinks and feels in different ways.
  4. (4) It is implied that         .
A . human beings will become less attractive in the future B . less use of a bodily organ may lead to its degeneration C . human beings hope for a change in the future life D . future life is always predictable
