In Sweden, winters are long, cold, and dark. In fact, daring this season the northern part of the country has very hours of sunlight. Summers, on the other hand, are short but full of light.
On the day of the year-the summer solstice there are 18 hours of sun shine in southern Sweden. And in the north, it never gets completely dark. After the winter, they are ready to celebrate the holiday- Midsummer Day, it comes in the middles of their summer, June 21. It's a day for people to be outside.
Swedes decorate poles with flowers and ribbons, and children dancethe poles and sing. They also play special games. In the evening, it's time for the adults to celebrate. They make a festival meal. For dessert, they have a summer treat-straw berries and cream. Afterward, they dance. Many Swedes stay awake the sun comes up, which is earlier than you might think. In the north, the sun rises at 3:00a.m. in the summer.
