Alicia was a young woman who liked to exercise for her health. She didn't smoke and never 1. She didn't eat chocolate, 2.
One day, Alicia saw a man sitting in a rocking chair under a tree. He looked very old and his hair was white. He looked thin and weak, and his hands were shaking, 3 he looked very happy.
He smiled at her and said, "Good morning! Lovely day, isn't it?"
He had a wide smile 4 his face, but Alicia saw that he did not have teeth.
"Good morning!" said Alicia. "Yes, it is a lovely day."
Alicia thought he looked very old .so he must be at 5 90 years old! She decided to ask him about the 6 of a happy old age.
"I hope you don't 7 me asking, " she said, "but what is your secret of being so happy at your age? I hope I can look as happy as you do when I am your age."
The man in the rocking chair said, "My secret of 8? I smoke every week and drink wine every day. I usually eat junk food and never eat vegetables. And I never walk anywhere or play sports. I sit at home every day."
Alicia didn't expect the man to give her such an answer. She wondered how the man could live a long life when he did 9 wrong. She thought he should be 10 and sad. Maybe she was wrong.
"How old are you?" She asked.
"It's my birthday today," said the man. "I'm forty- seven!"

Summer is one of the best times for you and your dog to spend some good time outdoors. It's also the season that can be dangerous to dogs. In order to keep your pets safe, you will need to learn about the possible dangers.
Not all dogs can swim. In a perfect world, you hope that your dog will jump in the water and naturally know what to do. While some dogs(especially dogs like Labradors and Golden Retrievers) may naturally know how to swim, many others do not. There are many dogs who fear the water and refuse to learn to swim. You should never force a dog into the water.
Watch what your dog drinks. Most dogs will gladly drink the water in which they are swimming. This can bring a serious problem depending on the kind of water. Pool chemicalsare very dangerous and not healthy. Lake and river water may seem innocuous, but may have parasites. It is more possible to find parasites in standing water than in running water.
Dogs can get sunburned, too. Dogs with lighter hair, short hair or pink noses are in greater danger. But even long-haired dogs can get sunburned noses. Water reflects light, so it is more possible to get sunburned around water. Make sure that your dog is not always in the sun while swimming.

Nowadays the DCEP is coming into people's life. There are some advantages and disadvantages.
Little birds talk with their sisters and brothers in their nest*. They make a sound for food. Mum tells them to be quiet when danger comes. But now a new study finds that kind of talk begins long before the babies are born. Even in the eggs, they can talk with each other and know when to get out or when to keep waiting.
To check that finding, a team of scientists from Spain watched unborn birds carefully in Salvora Island. Over there, sea birds produce eggs and minks* eat baby birds. So it is quite a dangerous place for baby birds. Knowing when to come out of the egg is a matter of life and death.
Scientists collected sea bird eggs and put them into two groups. When minks come, a parent will give warning calls to the baby birds. Scientists played those calls for one group. While the other group stayed in a safe box. They would never hear such calls.
When scientists put all the eggs together, they found something surprising: after receiving warning calls, the eggs vibrated* more than the others. Those vibrations moved from one egg to another. It was just like there were ears in the eggs. It was clear that unborn birds talked with their sisters and brothers about danger.

Today, we will show the word "waste". It is something people tell us not to do. At home, parents tell us not to watch food in the classroom, teachers tell us not to waste time. One sports team, coaches tell us not to waste energy.
Waste often happens because we use something too much or because we do not use it well, we often use "waste" in arguments. lf we are unhappy with someone, we can say: "Don't waste my time. "And if you are not happy with something you did, you can say, "Well, that was a complete waste of time."
We also find it in some useful expressions". The first one is "Haste makes waste." "Haste" means doing something very quickly. "Haste makes waste" means if you move or do something in a hurry, you could make mistakes. And then it takes more time to correct mistakes. So, if you see your friends doing homework in a hurry, you can suggest, "Be careful with your work, you might make mistakes and then our teacher will make you do it again. Haste makes waste, you know. "
The other common expression is: "Waste Not, Want Nor." This means that if you never waste anything, especially food or money, you will always have it when you need it the most.
Now Let's hope learning about "waste" in this words and, There Stories was not a "complete waste of your time."

Linda was Tara's best friend before, but now things are different. Tara is a member of Purple Girls Club and they have some rules about who they can be friends with. Linda isn't very pretty and doesn't wear cool clothes. So she can't be in their club. Now Tara is making a name list for her party, and she decides not to invite Linda.
“Tara, come here,” her mother calls from the living room. Tara goes to her mother and sees the school report card in her hands.
“Tara, what's the matter with you? You have failed(不及格)math and English and you did badly in all of your other subjects. You were such a good student before!”
Tara sees the disappointment(失望) in her mom's eyes. She feels terrible. The activities of Purple Girls Club leave her very little time for studies. The girls get together almost daily for movies, shopping and surfing the Internet. She calls every friend in the club and asks them to help her. But they all refuse(拒绝) and say, “Who cares about studies now?” This makes Tara even sadder.
Later, Tara's mom takes her to Linda's house across the street. Tara says sorry and Linda is glad to have her friend back. She happily helps Tara with her studies.
Tara now has a new rule for friendship and it is that a friend that lends a helping hand is a true friend.
