Kala has deep ties to her Hawaiian roots. Her ancestors navigated (航行) the oceans for centuries using their knowledge of the stars, the sun, the currents and the wind. It's not that she does it in a canoe without technology, but rather uses the natural technology around her. It's called Way finding, and was taught to her by her father.

"My father was my foundation, my rock. "she says of her first voyage with him from Oahu to Lahaina in a traditional canoe. He taught her how to read the stars, the ocean swells and how to use them to hold the course. "Over 200 stars have specific names and purposes when you are Way finding. You have to look at each and determine if they are rising or setting. You know this star and the direction it represents. If you can do that, you can use it as a tool to orient (确定方向). "Kala added.

Kala Tanaka sailed the canoe in the ocean for up to three weeks. During the day, Kala used the sun until it hit a certain height. When she got closer to land, she looked for certain species of land birds and clouds that indicated there was land below. When Kala sailed she felt" I feel very connected to the crew and the canoe. We're a family. "The longer voyage required Kala to spend hours studying the day and the night skies. It was demanding physical work. But it also had its moments of awe. For Kala, the beauty was in tying together the past and the present to enjoy the moment. So when she was not sailing, she was teaching Way finding skills to school-aged children in hopes of preserving the skills her ancestors relied on.

It's easy to be lost in the immediacy of the technology of our day, to be consumed by screens and miss the nature that unfolds around us. But if we will take the time to look up, to see the stars and the sun, the way the clouds move, the miracle of life beneath and above us, we will discover something deep inside us, something that will always lead to happiness.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Melati and Isabel deeply love their home on the island, surrounded by tropical rain forests, green fields, and a vast ocean. Enjoying a swim at their local beach was once a daily pleasure for them. But when Melati was fifteen, and Isabel just ten, the sisters started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters near their borne. More often than not, plastic bags would be around them as they swam and some were scattered on the beach. They got really upset about that.

Melati didn't think much about it until one day her teacher gave a lesson on some world heroes. Each of those people had sparked movements of positive changes in the world. They believed in the impact they could have and they did inspire more people to do something meaningful. After school, Melati walked home slowly in silence, concerned about the vast amount of plastic rubbish on the beach. The heroes crossed her mind. If they could do it, we could do it too, she thought. The idea lit her up. She couldn't wait to share what she thought with Isabel and quickened her pace.

"So many plastic bags around! The beach is dirty and messy! It's so terrible! We have lost the clean and beautiful beach. Can't we do something to get it back?" Melati said heartily. Isabel felt a bit puzzled at what to do, but she also had a strong desire to do something. Picturing a beach as fascinating as before in mind, the pair jumped with joy.

They talked a lot, anxious to know how Dad and Mom would respond to their ideas. That night when the family sat by the dinner table, the sisters eagerly got their ideas across. While Mom and Dad listened to the girls carefully, their eyes shone. "How amazing that would be! We are so proud of you!" Dad exclaimed. Mom came up, gave them a thumb up and hugged the sisters.

A country that is carbon neutral is basically no longer giving off, or "emitting", the dangerous greenhouse gases, simply called "carbon emissions".

Carbon emissions are closely tied to the burning of "fossil fuels", like coal, oil, and gas. To become carbon neutral, it's necessary to stop creating power and heat in ways that pollute, and instead use more "renewable" methods, such as getting energy from the sun, wind, and water. New Zealand already gets about 80% of its energy from renewable sources. From the government's point of view, to become carbon neutral, that is not enough. So it plans to increase this. Additionally, it aims to begin using more electric cars and trucks. It will also be spending $14. 5 billion to make it easier for people to get around by walking, biking, or using public transportation. Meanwhile, it has a goal of planting 1 billion trees.

Methane (甲烷) is one of the worst greenhouse gases. Surprisingly, methane from cows and sheep makes up about 34% of New Zealand's polluting gases. However, New Zealand's plan to go carbon neutral doesn't cover methane from cows and sheep. It aims to reduce this kind of pollution, too, but not so much. The plan calls for cutting back on the gas by 24% to 47% by 2050. The leader of New Zealand's Green Party, James Shaw, was responsible for much of the plan. He was clearly successful: it passed 119 votes to 1.

New Zealand has progressed from debating whether climate change is real to discussing what to do about it and is one of the few countries where going carbon neutral has become the law. Scientists say more of this sort of action is still needed right away. A report has been released by 11, 000 scientists, and they believe more countries will face the climate emergency positively. This is the first time that such a large group of scientists have used the word "emergency" to describe climate change.

  1. (1) What does the underlined word "this" in paragraph 2 refer to?
A . Planting more trees. B . Using greener energy. C . Stopping fossil fuels. D . Making more vehicles.
  2. (2) What can be learnt about New Zealand's carbon neutral plan?
    A . It's controversial. B . It's impractical. C . It's imperfect. D . It's eventful.
  3. (3) What does the author convey about climate change in the last paragraph?
A . Some still do not take it seriously. B . Many countries don't doubt about it. C . The ways have been found to rid it. D . It might stop being carbon neutral.
  4. (4) What's the text mainly about?
    A . Some ways of carbon emissions. B . Global climate change emergency. C . New Zealand's low-carbon lifestyle. D . New Zealand's being carbon neutral.

Aeronautics (航空学) specialists from the University of South Australia spent months studying the dragonfly's flight, creating 3D models from digital images, to build a winged drone (无人机). Study leader Javaan Chahl believes that winged drones based on the dragonfly's shape and movement will simply be more flexible and energy efficient.

Chahl's team used a special photography technique to classify the wing shapes of 75 different dragonfly species from museum collections. Their wings are long, light and hard. Plus, their long bodies give them excellent stability and balance, making it possible for winged drones to deliver awkward loads and undertake long observation missions.

Investigating the way that dragonflies remain stable during flight actually reveals the techniques they use to get themselves out of tricky situations. Dragonflies are found to be able to perform upside-down backflips to regain balance and normal flight, when they find themselves upside down mid-air. This special skill can even be performed while dragonflies are unconscious, meaning it is a passive stability mechanism similar in concept to planes that are designed to glide to safety with their engines turned off. Engineers are looking to copy dragonfly wings to create safer drones that can right themselves.

Of course, not all attempts to build dragonfly-like drones are successful. TechJet's air vehicle was supposed to operate as an aerial camera, observation and security drone, but it failed before production got underway. Similarly, Insectothopter, an American dragonfly spy drone built in the 1970 s was deserted.

Yet the principles behind winged drones are solid. In fact, NASA has settled on a nuclear-powered autonomous craft called Dragonfly to explore the surface of Saturn's moon Titan in 2034. NASA's project is actually an air vehicle, rather than a winged drone, but engineers are still convinced they can crack the code of nature's most gifted flying insect and revolutionize unmanned flight along the way.

  1. (1) Why did aeronautics specialists spend months studying the dragonfly's flight?
A . To build 3D models from digital images. B . To make winged drones modelled after it. C . To clarify the flexibility and efficiency of drones. D . To display the shape and movement of the dragonfly.
  2. (2) The special skill of dragonflies is their ability to____.
A . glide to safety B . avoid tricky situations C . perform observation tasks D . adjust themselves to stay stable
  3. (3) What is the author's attitude towards winged drones?
    A . Skeptical. B . Uncertain. C . Supportive. D . Conservative.
  4. (4) Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A . Winged Drones: Still a Long Way to Go B . Javaan Chahl: An Innovative Leader of Aeronautics C . A Dragonfly's Flying Technique: Perfect for Drones D . The Code of Nature: A Solution to NASA's Space Exploration

Spending some time in nature can feel like a relief after staring at a screen or being stuck inside all day. There are plenty of ways to enjoy nature: you can exercise outside, document what you see and even just experience what's happening.

Exercising outside.

Going for a walk or run is one of the simplest ways to get outside and enjoy nature. You can go for a walk or run in your neighborhood or on a nearby nature trail. You can bike through your neighborhood, or even take your bike to a nearby nature trail. Either way, you'll get some exercise while you're enjoying being outside.

You can use any camera you have — your phone, a small point-and-shoot, or a DSLR. Taking photos outside requires you to really focus on the nature around you. Look for unusual colors, patterns, or animals to photograph.

Experiencing nature.

Instead, enjoy the weather, look at the stars, and take some time to take in where you are. If you have a tent, put it up in the backyard. Otherwise, you can just lay out sleeping bags and sleep under the stars.

Bringing nature inside your home.

There's nothing worse than wanting to be outside but getting stuck indoors because of the weather. Recreate an outdoor cozy spot inside your house by hanging a hammock in the corner of a room.

A. Documenting nature.

B. Creating art inspired by nature.

C. Try to avoid taking any electronics outside with you.

D. If you can't get outside, bring nature indoors to you!

E. If walking or running isn't quite your style, go for a bike ride instead.

F. Surround your spot with a blanket, some plants, and your favorite book.

G. Describe what you smelled or heard or saw, and how you felt being outside.

The Sad Zither is a famous seven-verse poem  (write)by Tang Dynasty poet Li Shangyin (813—858). Due to its rich imagery, the poem is regarded as one of  (hard)poems to explain and translate.

In  beginning of the poem, the poet looks at his zither and recalls the death of his beloved wife. The big number of strings, which might not be the real number, is mentioned  (show) his feeling. With so many strings, his zither creates complicated tones,  (suggest) the sorrow and depression the poet feels. The reality is so cruel that he wishes everything  happened was untrue. In this part, he uses four Chinese ancient myths and legends: Zhuangzi, a philosopher, dreams of being a butterfly and couldn't distinguish dream  reality; the ancient emperor Wang becomes a cuckoo and always cries; mermaid's tears become pearl and vapor of jade from Lantian County can  (see)in the sunlight. The first three stories all create a sad atmosphere. Though the last legend describes a beautiful scene, it's hard to reach, implicating the hopelessness.

Actually, the four  (story)he chose indicate Li's dissatisfaction with his life.

In the end, the poet  (direct)expresses his point. He wrote about his regret toward the passing years and the helplessness of being unable to change anything, even if he was given the chance to live those years again.
