阅读理解I was only five, but my memories of the serious rainstorm that hit my hometown of Jinan, Shangdong province, on the night of August 26 1987, are still vivid. My family lived in an apartment in a row of buildings near the Xiao-qing River. Starting from Jinan, the river flows into Bohai Bay. Before the industrialization of the city started in the 1970s, the river served as a lifeline between the city and the coast, along which boats transported coal to the coast, returning with full loads (装) of sea salt. But the river started serving as a channel for industrial wastewater from the factories in the 1980s, as well as house-hold wastewater produced by the city as thousands of people came to work in the factories. With the water becoming dark and smelly, fish and shrimps soon disappeared. My father said the river had "died", and people might be punished for it. I had no idea what he meant. But that night I found out what the punishment was. Flashes of lightning followed by loud thunders (雷声) broke the peace. In a minute, the rain poured down. All the houses were flooded. My mother rushed to wake me. I remember seeing the bed floating off the floor in the floodwater. My mom carried me on her back away from our home to the top of the dam walking waist-deep (齐腰深) in the water. We were all homeless and were arranged to live in a nearby hotel. After the flood, people were worried and anxious to go home to check what the damage was. In the following twenty years, the houses were hit by similar floods several times until finally the river has been widened and cleared. Whenever I go back to my hometown, I remembered the days when I learned to live with floods.

阅读理解Want great success in your career and your love life, as well as a healthy brain long into old age? The answer could be to learn another language. That's the case according to a majority of Americans and Britons polled in a survey by language app Babbel. 71% of Americans and 61% of Britons believe speaking more than one language makes a person seem more attractive. Of 3000 English speakers polled in the US and the UK, nine out of ten admitted they'd learnt a new language in pursuit of romance. Besides, about one in four Americans and Britons think that being monolingual (单语的) has held them back professionally. "Languages not only enable you to expand yourself in terms of perspective and skill set, but they also open doors and help you better understand other cultures and peoples," Miriam Plieninger, director of didactics at Babbel. "Knowing another language helps to break barriers and to connect on a special level of shared understanding; be it while on the street, traveling, or in business." Globally, more than half of the world can speak at least two languages. "Different factors influence how easy or difficult it is to learn a new language," says Plieninger. "If the language you're learning is part of the same family as your mother tongue, it's generally much easier to access." Theoretically, English speakers should therefore be more comfortable with Germanic languages like German or Dutch, as both are historically very close to English. However, familiarity picked up in everyday life or in the classroom makes a big difference, which is why Americans feel at ease with Spanish and Britons with French. Being multilingual can also be good for your health. Canadian scientist Ellen Bialystok found that speaking more than one language regularly from an early age improves cognitive abilities and can also delay symptoms of Alzheimer's diseases.

阅读理解At the International Grand Bazaar (大巴扎集市) in Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (新疆维吾尔自治区), Wang Ge, a paper-cutting artist, runs a small store where dazzling examples of her work are on display in the popular tourist destination. With just a pair of scissors and paper, the 65-year-old native craftswoman creates traditional animal paper-cuts, fruit, land-mark buildings and even complicated dance scenes. Wang is an inheritor (继承者) of Xinjiang's precious cultural heritage of paper cutting. Growing up in the region and influenced by diverse ethnic cultures, she is committed to telling Xinjiang stories through her paper cutting while protecting and promoting the traditional folk art. She has cultivated her craft since childhood and grew up in a family fond of the skill. At the age of 4, she began to copy her grandmother and mother, using scissors to cut out patterns of flowers, birds, fish and insects. Wang recalls her grandmother was skilled at cutting traditional window decorations for weddings and Spring Festival. "Paper cutting is a combination of folk art and daily life," said Wang, who graduated from the art department of Xinjiang Normal University. During her decades of paper cutting, she has been inspired by real-life experiences, especially those relating to ethnic culture in the region. She often travels to Kashgar, Hotan and Aksu prefectures in southern Xinjiang to explore how local ethnic people live. "The bazaar is a window on Xinjiang," she said. "I hope that I can spread Chinese cultural heritage to people of different ages and from different countries." After the COVID-19 outbreak, Wang gave online lectures on paper cutting, attracting 100,000 viewers and teaching students unable to attend school how to cut the images of medical workers from paper. Wang said she was pleased to see pupils who lacked colored paper painting the white paper red and green as a substitute art form.

任务型阅读If you haven't made it to your local gym, and you're still longing for a way to get out of the house and work up a sweat, it might be time to take up one of the oldest and simplest human exercises: running. As you begin your training, you might not be happy with your starting pace. "I think we get ready in our heads about it and that's part of why we won't slow down to try to run further," says Amanda Brooks, a running coach. "We don't want to tell people we're running because we think we're not fast enough." Chances are you're not going to be breaking any world records on your beginning runs. Instead, focus on putting in the effort to reach your running goals on a gradual basis. New runners might start by running two or three days a week and using off days to stretch and strength-train to prevent injuries. Even a combination of walking, jogging and running for 20 or 30 minutes can help build up endurance (忍耐力) as time passes. So stick to your schedule in all cases. While you may be running more often, that doesn't mean each run needs to be faster than the last. "We just have the tendency to go out and we think running should be a certain speed. So we go really hard, only to find we can just make it a couple of miles," Brooks says. Using a combination of speeds to increase your distance can help break down mental barriers. A. But everyone has to start somewhere. B. Keep in mind that there is actually no overnight success. C. So don't compare yourself to long-time runners. D. Keep running and you will see the great improvement. E. That can make you feel more confident when dealing with longer runs. F. Over time, your body will become more able to handle larger amounts of runs. G. And your body will respond better and improve more quickly if you change the speed. |
