The Festival of Cultures is an annual event to celebrate the wide range of cultures found in our great state. People representing 40 cultural groups will share their traditions and customs. Here are just a few of the festival's many activities.

Crafts: See the fine art of basket weaving from Vietnam and Zimbabwe. Watch the art of making paper umbrellas from Thailand and the decorative craft of papel picado, or paper cutting, from Mexico. All craft demonstrations provide a firsthand view of how things are made. You will appreciate the process involved in making these products.

Music and Dance: Experience musical instruments that you have never heard before. Listen to the music of a sho from Japan, a bull-roarer from Australia, a sitar from India, and a chakay from Thailand. You will also be entertained by folk dances from around the world, such as the troika from Russia and the Mayim Mayim from Israel. From 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM on August 14, special folk dancing classes for children will be offered. Children ranging in age from 6 to 8 can learn the kinderpolka from Germany. Children ranging in age from 9 to 12 can learn the raspa from Mexico.

Storytelling: Listen for hours as professional storytellers charm you with attractive tales. Fairy tales, folktales, and ballads from various countries will be told. By popular demand, Gwendolyn Washington, a famous African American storyteller, is back.

As I went down the wooden snowy steps, I held the rough fence with one hand, held my crying daughter Kelly with the other and made my way into the yard. I knew everything would be okay if I located my mother.

Instead of a smile, she greeted me with concern. I knew she had read my face as I'd approached. "What's wrong?" she asked.

I held the baby out. "I can't take care of this baby," I said simply. My mother didn't take her from my arms as I expected. She smiled slightly, and then replied firmly," You have to take care of that baby." This was not the reply I wanted. Couldn't she hear the baby crying? I wanted her to fix this problem. Instead, she took off her gloves and asked me in for some coffee.

Mom held Kelly while I held the coffee cup. At that moment the baby finally stopped crying. I glanced over at Kelly, content in my mother's arms. Her tiny blue eyes were fixed on me, as if to ask, "What's the problem here, Mama?" Her sweet, familiar breath cased the stress in the air. I looked at my mother, feeling foolish but relieved. She stood and placed an arm around my shoulders. "By the time you came along, things were quite the opposite for me. But with your elder brother, you can bet that I often felt helpless. "

The baby showed no signs of our afternoon struggle, while my own hair remained damp and messy from sweat and worry. "Crying is the only way babies have to communicate. Try to listen to her cries and hear then as language. She's not crying to annoy you; she's trying to send a message with the only voice she has. "

Once again, her gentle guidance had supported me through a storm and back into clear skies.

  1. (1) Why did the author visit her mother in the rough weather?
A . She was concerned about her mother's safety. B . She was helpless and needed her mother's help. C . She wanted to learn to care for babies from her mother. D . She intended to borrow some money from her mother.
  2. (2) How did the author's mother probably feel when bringing her up?
A . Inexperienced but patient. B . Considerate but impatient. C . Experienced and confident. D . Thoughtless and unconcerned.
  3. (3) What did the author's mother want to express in paragraph 5?
A . Taking care of babies was difficult. B . Babies enjoyed annoying their parents. C . The author should let her baby cry more. D . Parents should understand and accept babies' crying.
  4. (4) What can we infer about the author's mother?
A . She usually goes shopping with the author. B . She lives a lonely life without her children. C . She often gives advice to the author in trouble. D . She likes to raise small children for young mothers.

I stopped to watch my little girl busy playing in her room. In one hand was a plastic phone; in the other a toy. I listened as she was speaking to her make-believe little friend and I'll never forget the words she said, even though it was imagined.

She said, "Suzie's in the corner because she's not been very good. She didn't listen to a word I said or do the things she should." In the corner I saw her baby doll well dressed. It was obvious that she'd been put there to sit alone and think.

My daughter continued her "conversation", as I sat down on the floor. She said, "I'm all fed up and I just don't know what to do with her any more. She cries whenever I have to work and wants to play games too. She tries to help me with the dishes, but her arms just cannot reach. And she doesn't know how to fold towels. I don't have the time to teach. I have a lot of work to do and a big house to keep clean. I don't have the time to sit and play—don't you know what I mean?"

And that day I thought a lot about making some changes in my life, after listening to her innocent words which cut me like a knife. I hadn't been paying enough attention to what I hold most dear. I'd been caught up in responsibilities that increased throughout the years.

But now my attitude has changed because in my heart I realize that I've seen the world in a different light through my little darling's eyes. So let the cobwebs (蜘蛛网) cut the corners and the dust bunny rabbit rule the floor. I'm not going to worry about keeping up with them anymore.

I'm going to fill the house with memories of a child and her mother, for we have only one childhood and we will never get another.

  1. (1) Who is Suzie?
    A . The girl's phone. B . A baby doll. C . The author. D . The girl's friend.
  2. (2) How did the author feel when hearing her little girl's words?
    A . Interested. B . Moved. C . Uncomfortable. D . Unbelievable.
  3. (3) Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A . The author wants her little girl to have a happy childhood. B . The author cares nothing about her daughter's happiness. C . The author has become lazy because of her daughter. D . The little girl doesn't hate her mother any more.
  4. (4) What might be the best title?
    A . Parent-child relationship B . My lovely daughter C . Only one childhood D . A world of children

Perhaps unsurprisingly, buffoonery (滑稽) was one of few careers acceptable for women to pursue in the Middle Age. And it was not uncommon for women to enjoy this career.

However, in the 17th century, comedians (喜剧演员) were forced to society's edge as their tendency to truth-telling was no longer tolerated among high society and women, bearing the weight of gender prejudice (偏见), were seldom among this career.

This slowly began to change in the mid-19th century when women began to enter the workforce and, in the circus (马戏表演) industry, a growing minority of female performers were employed. They promoted the industry's "New Woman" movement which introduced female performers into the traditionally male stage.

In 1895, among the women breaking the prejudice was Josephine Williams or "Lady Evetta" called the "The Only Lady Clown".

Williams told The New York Times: "I believe that a woman can do anything for a living that a man can do and do it just as well as a man. All my people laughed at me when I told them that I was going on stage as a clown. But they do not laugh now. "

Despite her being optimistic, the article concluded: "The men in the clown business rather enjoy Miss Williams' odd performances but they do not regard her as a serious competitor or believe that any other women are likely to follow her example."

How wrong they were! In the 1970s, French-born Annie Fratellini opened the circus school Académie Fratellini encouraged by her film-making husband Pierre Etaix.

Fratellini's Auguste was recognizable as the clown familiar today. Her unique make-up was made up of a big red nose, tears, a black mouth and shiny decorations fixed to her eyes. When asked whether the character she acted was male or female, she insisted that "clowns have no gender".

  1. (1) What happened to the comedians in the 17th century?
A . Few women worked as comedians. B . Comedians disappeared in the society. C . Male comedians were forced out of society. D . Comedians were popular among high society.
  2. (2) What is people's attitude to Williams as a clown at first?
    A . Supportive. B . Appreciative. C . Impatient. D . Unacceptable.
  3. (3) Who created the clown image familiar to us today?
    A . Pierre Etaix. B . Annie Fratellini. C . Lady Evetta. D . Josephine Williams.
  4. (4) What is the text mainly about?
A . The history of female clowns. B . The development of buffoonery. C . Women suffered from prejudice. D . How women broke the prejudice.

How is eating in space different from eating on Earth?

If you send astronauts into space, you have to send along food as well. But what do astronauts eat, and how do they eat it? Scientists take several factors into consideration as they plan meals for space.

First, and possibly most important, is nutrition (营养). Providing junk food to eat, such as potato chips, sodas, and pizza, would make the astronauts unhealthy.

If the food that has been provided is distasteful, then the astronauts may avoid eating it. If you've ever tried to concentrate on something important while your stomach doesn't feel well, you'll know why the scientists in charge of a space mission want their astronauts to eat regularly.

The lack of gravity in a spacecraft also determines what foods can or cannot be eaten in space. Meals must be packaged carefully so they won't spill into the cabin (one of the areas inside a spacecraft). Water or tiny bits of food could get inside a machine or electronic device and damage it. A loose knife bouncing (弹起) around inside the cabin would be dangerous.

The weight of every object included in a spacecraft must be calculated (计算) in order to ensure that there is enough fuel and power to carry the craft safely into space and back home again. Most foods are stored in plastic bags, and often, the foods are dehydrated (使脱水). When an astronaut is ready to eat, hot water is added to the meal and warm it up.

Despite all these requirements, much of the food eaten in space is actually similar to what you might eat on any given day.

A. Taste is also important.

B. Finally, weight is an important concern.

C. Food packaging is made to be as light as possible.

D. Believe it or not, they also have fresh fruits and vegetables.

E. Nutrition and practicality (实用) are important things to consider.

F. For the same reason, sharp knives and folks are never used on board.

G. Keeping astronauts' physical health is a top task for any space mission.

Sandstorms are common (nature) disasters. They are often so thick that you cannot see the sun, and the wind is sometimes strong enough to move sand dunes.
