When can you get a phone? The answer is when your parents think you need one. Of course, many kids seem to get a phone at around age 12 or 13 or at an even younger age because their parents think it is helpful. A phone can let the children soon contact (联系)their parents if something goes wrong or they need help. Likewise, it can also make parents quickly contact their kids so that they can check(检查) on them and make sure they're OK. If you get a phone, work out some rules with your parents. Learn to be in control of your phone. It will cost (花费) you much if you send too many messages or talk too long. Also work out some other things. When can you use your phone? When must you turn off the phone? If you get a phone, you'll also have to make sure you can take care of this new "friend". Put it in the same place so that it doesn't get lost. And don't use it in the bath-room(洗手间), because it is easy for you to drop your phone into the toilet(厕所).

In 1997,12-year-old American girl Caitlin and 14-year-old Zimbabwean (津巴布韦人)Martin became pen friends through their schools. They didn't realize at that time how their handwritten(手写的) letters would change their lives. It all began as a school task (任务). Everyone in Caitlin's class had to choose a pen friend from another country. All the other kids picked countries like France or Germany, but Caitlin chose Zimbabwe because the name sounded exotic and cool. Martin lived with his family in one of Zimbabwe's worst slums (贫民窟) where they shared one room with another family. And a bed was their only piece of furniture(家具). When Caitlin's first letters reached Martin, they were simple. The two kids wrote just about their favorite music and what they liked to do. But as Martin gradually (逐渐地) revealed more about his own life and his letters started arriving written on pieces of rubbish, Caitlin realized what the living conditions (生活条件) were like for Mart in. Without telling her parents, she began sending money with her letters-$20 at a time. Although the money was not much to Caitlin, it meant more food for Martin's family and helped him to pay his school fees (费用). It lasted (持续) six years from their first exchange letters to Martin's arriving in the United States. With the help of the money from Caitlin's parents later on, Martin finished his university and got his MBA from Duke University. Today, Caitlin and Martin aren't only best friends, but they also share their story in a book called I Will Always Write Back. They want to encourage (鼓励) readers to look beyond (超越) their own lives and do something kind for others, which might play an important role in their lives.

No one wants to be in a life-or-death situation. However, if you are getting into such a dangerous situation, what will you do, fight or flight? When 13-year-old Joe Rowlands and his dad were in a kayak (皮艇) accident, the brave (勇敢的) teenager chose to fight. He not only fought for his own life, but also saved his father's. On that day, Joe and his father Paul were out on their kayak off the coast(海岸)of Anglesey in the UK. Suddenly they noticed that the kayak was starting to fill with water. Then they found out there was a hole in the floor of the boat. Without another choice, Paul turned the boat over. He asked Joe to climb on top so that he could push the boat to a nearby island (岛屿). However, the rough(汹涌的) waves made it too hard for Paul to push the boat to land. They had to swim without the boat. Luckily, Joe made his way to the island safely. But when he looked back, he found his dad was no longer swimming. Risking his life, Joe jumped back into the cold water and tried to drag (拽) his dad up onto some rocks. Then Joe did CPR(心肺复苏) on his dad until he came around. "I'm very proud (自豪的) of him. He acted with courage. "Paul said of his son.
