Travelling around the world with children is difficult enough, while attempting it without using motorized transport is even more of challenge. Even so, Dario Schworer, a 42yearold climatologist and mountain guide, and his 33yearold wife Sabine are on a journey to do just that.

The Swiss couple want to travel across the world's oceans and climb the highest mountain on every continent to promote Earthfriendly ways of life.

They have also collected trash in the mountains of Nepal with school children.

So far they have communicated with 45, 000 children from South America, Australia and Asia, giving presentations about the importance of recycling and using alternative energy like solar and wind power.

When they began their adventure in 2003 they had no children of their own. But since then two has become five:daughter Sabine is now five years old, Andri was born in Chile and baby Neo was born in Australia.

Rick Anderson says he isn't scared of sharks and he is appealing to others to learn to love them.

"I try to convince people that looking at a shark eye to eye is totally different to sitting on a surfboard or a boat looking at every shadow that goes underneath thinking it's a shark coming to get them, " he said. "Eye to eye they look at you, you look at them and you go your own way. "

"I find that once people see their first sharks, their whole attitude changes. They realize that they are not as scary as what they thought they were, " Mr Anderson said. He compares sharks to dogs, in the way they show their behavior and attitude towards humans. "You're not going to go up to a dog that is arching(拱起) its back and making a low sound in the throat at you, " he said. "If a shark is arching and its fins(鳍) are down, it's telling you to move on. " He admits he thought the shark was trying to attack him the first few times.

Mr Anderson is against the controversial policy introduced in Western Australia to kill a shark if it presents a threat to humans. He says many of the same things that occur in Western Australia are also happening in New South Wales.

Mr Anderson says that sharks come closer to shore because they are attracted to the smell of whale carcasses(尸体) which have broken down after being buried in the sand on many beaches.

Mr Anderson often sees grey nurse sharks, fur seals, leopard seals, penguins and fishes of a range of colours in the Pacific Ocean along Bellingen Shire. "Depending on the time of the year, you can get a good mixture of sea creatures moving through there, " he said. Tiger sharks are his favourite kind of sharks. He describes them as pigheaded but also graceful creatures.

  1. (1) What does Mr Anderson probably do?
    A . A boatman. B . A diver. C . A surfer. D . A fisherman.
  2. (2) What does Mr Anderson indicate by comparing sharks to dogs?
A . Sharks have the same behavior as dogs. B . Sharks are naturally friendly to human beings. C . Sharks can be lovely creatures if properly trained. D . Sharks can send messages through their behavior.
  3. (3) What mistake did Mr Anderson once make?
A . He never looked at sharks eye to eye. B . He once saw sharks as a scary animal. C . He misunderstood a shark's arching its back. D . He didn't allow sharks to get close to shores.
  4. (4) What do we know about the Pacific Ocean along Bellingen Shire?
    A . It's Mr Anderson's favourite place. B . It's a popular place for tourists. C . It's open in certain times of the year. D . It's where Mr Anderson trains sharks.

For years, the giant squid(大王乌贼) had remained a modern mystery. Living in the dark depths of the ocean, the creature is difficult for scientists to observe directly. It had also managed to avoid all attempts to film it. That changed last July: for the first time ever, scientists were able to catch the giant squid on video in its natural habitat. They were amazed by what they saw. The scientists filmed the squid in the North Pacific Ocean, south of Tokyo, Japan. They followed it down to a depth of 2, 952 feet. They shot more than 23 minutes of video before the squid swam off into even darker depths. The video footage will be released to the public later this month on The Discovery Channel.

Tsunemi Kubodera, a zoologist at Japan's National Museum of Nature and Science, led the team that filmed the squid. The team went into the ocean in a small submarine with lights invisible to both humans and squid. Since giant squid eat smaller squid, the scientists released a small squid as bait(诱饵). Then the scientists waited in the pitch black for the giant squid to approach.

The color video shows the creature floating vertically, eating the bait squid. The giant squid is 9 to 10 feet long and is missing its two longest tentacles(触须). With those tentacles, it could have measured up to 26 feet long. It has huge black eyes, the size of dinner plates, "It was shining and so beautiful, " Kubodera said.

Because the deep ocean is so unfriendly to humans, little is known about the giant squid. Scientists say catching the mysterious creature on video is an important step toward understanding it. For centuries, sailors had reported seeing a huge, oceandwelling beast, thought to be the giant squid. The creature is also believed to be the subject of the Nordic myth of the kraken, a sea creature that supposedly attacked ships in Scandinavian waters over the past thousands of years.

  1. (1) Why is it difficult to film the giant squid?
A . Because it is illegal to film the giant squid. B . Because it is too expensive to make such a film. C . Because the giant squid lives in the dark deep ocean. D . Because the giant squid is dangerous to humans.
  2. (2) We can learn from the first paragraph that scientists         .
A . first saw the giant squid in the ocean B . discovered a new sea creature in the ocean C . have the ocean bottom secretly recorded on video D . have first caught the legendary giant squid on video
  3. (3) According to the passage, the giant squid's longest tentacles can be         .
    A . 16 to 17 feet long B . 9 to 10 feet long C . more than 26 feet long D . about 36 feet long
  4. (4) The scientists released a small squid in the ocean to         .
A . increase the number of the giant squid B . trick the giant squid into coming out C . make an educational film about it D . show concern for the giant squid

One weekend in July, Jane and her husband, Tom, had driven three hours to camp overnight by a lake in the forest. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant subject came up and they started to quarrel. By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, "I'm going to find a better spot for us to camp" and walked away.

With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snowcapped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.

"Tom!" she cried. "Help!"

No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom!Jane kept moving, but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him.

Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling(滴落) somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank, and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better. Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream and hope it would lead her to the lake.

As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard a helicopter. Is that for me? Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them if they came back again.

注意:续写词数应为150左右。

But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark again.

……

It was daybreak when Jane woke up.
