When my son was 11 years old, he got a small job helping out with a traveling carnival(嘉年华会)in our town. He didn't come home at lunch time, phoning instead to tell me he was fine and had found a few days' work helping out at an exhibit. He turned up for supper as usual however after he finished work.

I asked him how he had managed at lunch and he told me he had made some new friends at the carnival. They were some young men who were twin brothers, and their mom and dad. They had paid him a few dollars and invited him for lunch in return for helping them set up their exhibit on the first day and wanted him to return the next day to help with other chores(杂务).

I was glad he had found new friends but a little worried about the type of people who might be traveling in a carnival. "Oh, Mom, these are just normal everyday people like anyone else. They just work at a carnival instead of in a store or something. Come down tomorrow and meet them yourself," he said.

So the next day I went to the carnival and to the exhibit he had directed me to. The twin brothers turned out to be Siamese(连体的)twins, joined at the chest. He hadn't thought this fact was important enough to mention. When I brought it to him, he said, "Yes, I noticed that too. Do you know that their mom has to make all their clothes because it's so difficult to find anything to fit them? They're also really good cooks. Today, Joe, the one on the right, made me spaghetti意大利面条>for lunch."

What others see first in a person is not what a child considers important. Where I saw Siamese twins, he saw people having difficulty buying clothes that fit, and young men who were good cooks. It was a lesson I have thought about many times over the years.

  1. (1) How did the author's son help the family at the carnival on the first day?
A . By buying necessary things. B . By helping set up their exhibit. C . By selling things at the carnival. D . By putting on some performances.
  2. (2) How were the Siamese twins in the boy's eyes?
A . They were just normal people. B . They were good cooks with a strange appearance. C . They were people who had no suitable clothes to wear. D . They were more friendly and kinder than normal people.
  3. (3) What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A . The author's son earned a lot of money at the exhibit. B . The author's son was good at communicating with others. C . The author's son usually made his appearance at supper at home. D . The author's son disliked meeting his parents at home.
  4. (4) Which proverb may the author agree with according to the last paragraph?
A . It is a matter of opinion. B . Love me, love my dog. C . It's never too late to learn. D . More haste, less speed.

Health experts have long known that vitamin D is important for healthy bones and teeth. It may also help to protect the body against diseases such as diabetes and cancer. And now, researchers say vitamin D might help fight brain diseases called dementia(痴呆).

Dementia is a brain disease that damages thinking and memory processes, which scientists call " cognitive(认知)abilities." Dementia is difficult to treat. Taking care of someone who has dementia is extremely demanding. And the disease is very frightening to sufferers. Chris Roberts suffers from dementia. He says the worst part of living with this disease was getting lost while driving. "The worst thing that I found was getting lost in the car, not just forgetting where I was going—I wouldn't know where I was." More than 47 million people around the world suffer from dementia. The World Health Organization reports that 60 percent of them live in low—and middle—income countries.

We get vitamin D from some foods like nuts, lentils(扁豆) and fatty fish. We also get vitamin D from the sun. But that is not dependable. In some parts of the world, there is not enough sunlight to provide enough vitamin D. Also, sunblock prevents the vitamin from entering the body. To add to the problem, the skin's ability to process vitamin D weakens as a person ages.

Researchers at Rutgers University in New Jersey are exploring the relationship between vitamin D and dementia. The team recently measured vitamin D levels and cognitive ability in older people. Nutritional sciences professor Joshua Miller led the team. He said cognitive abilities differed among the study subjects. He said tests showed that about 60 percent of the group was low in vitamin D.

  1. (1) What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A . Where people get vitamin D. B . How dementia affects people's health. C . Whether sunlight can produce vitamin. D . Why people's age influences the production of vitamin D.
  2. (2) What does the underlined word "demanding" mean in Paragraph 2?
A . Boring but rewarding. B . Disgusting and stressful. C . Tough and tiresome. D . Disturbing and frightening.
  3. (3) Which of the following is true according to the text?
A . Vitamin D is mainly obtained from food and the sun. B . Vitamin D makes no difference to fighting against cancer. C . Dementia primarily damages the brain's thinking process. D . Most of the people suffering from dementia live in developed countries.
  4. (4) Where can the text be most probably found?
    A . In a travel magazine. B . In a literature magazine. C . In a business magazine. D . In a science magazine.

I'm a travel addict(旅游迷).  Here's what I have come up with about why travel is so fascinating(迷人的).

To start with, whether we know it or not, every day is filled with anxiety about things that we don't need to worry about in the first place  For example, after a whole day at work, I am often physically and mentally tired and start to worry about things. However, the moment I get on the train or bus to my next destination, I forget all my tiredness and worries.

Just the ability to move is exhilarating (令人高兴的). Movement also means that we are going to new places and seeing new things.  Because experiencing new situations, people and ideas could help us to learn about new things and grow, especially when we don't have the burden of everyday worries. I have never gone on a trip and comeback as the same person. I have always changed and grown through travel.

You will not only experience more of the world, but will become a happier person with a richer set of experiences.

A. But why is that important?

B. But why is a place worth visiting?

C. You can watch videos while taking a train.

D. So take every type of trip you can at every chance you get.

E. Next is one of the most basic concepts in travel: movement.

F. Going to new places is an opportunity to escape from our everyday worries.
