"Mommy, will you play this with me?" My two-year-old daughter sat next to a mountain of laundry baskets. She held a toy in her hand. I looked at her, and then I stared down a pile of dirty clothes-enough, already. I thought of some popular phrases among moms I had read countless times on the Internet. "Days are long but the years fly by." "A messy house is a happy house." "Hard work pays off." I become energetic every time the phrases pass through my mind.

Sometimes, the laundry just needed to get done. I stared straight into my daughter's pleading eyes.

"I'm sorry, sweetheart, but I cannot play right now. Mom is really busy." Suddenly, an idea passed through my brain. I must do the housework! And that would not make me a bad mom!

Quite the opposite, I thought.

It's okay to clean, to cook, or to spend a morning paying bills, making phone calls and folding towels. That's what grown-ups do. And how else will our kids learn unless we demonstrate? Recently, I read an article about a local family. It was a diary of their typical week, written by the father of six children. Each day consisted of cooking and family devotions. The grandkids ran in the barn while the older children milked cows, and everyone helped make pies for the family bakery business. They were all faithfully devoted to one another as they worked side by side from dawn to dusk.

Could it be that the real call on a family is not for the parents to serve the children, but for everyone to serve each other for a greater purpose? Sometimes we work, and sometimes we play. Strong families are built with both.

"Sweetie, I have a great idea." I set my daughter's game on the table and held her hands. "You can help me put these clothes in the wash. Doesn't that sound fun?" Her face lit up. "Can I push the buttons, too?" "Absolutely, you are a good button pusher." "Yeah," she said as if I had just asked her to play.

A . Interest should be developed at a young age. B . It is really hard to take good care of children. C . Children should be taught to contribute to families. D . Parents are responsible for keeping family in harmony.
  3. (3) How did the daughter feel when she was asked to do some housework?

In 1970, before he became a blues legend, Stevie Ray Vaughan was working as a dishwasher in Dallas. One of his jobs was cleaning out the trash bin. To do it, Vaughan had to stand on some large wooden barrels, which were for the kitchen crew to dump hot grease(油脂). One day, while he was cleaning, the top of a barrel suddenly gave and he fell in.

Luckily for Vaughan, it had been a while since the last grease dump, so the stuff had cooled and he was able to safely climb out of the barrel. However, the next day, Vaughan's boss fired him for breaking the barrel. The young man could have been severely injured, and he lost his job for his trouble.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. National surveys suggest that burns, cuts, falls and other injuries are extremely common in the fast food industry, where underpaid people are placed under intense pressure to work quickly.

Then there's wage theft—employers trying to avoid paying workers what they're legally entitled to. According to the Economic Policy Institute, federal and state agencies recovered $933 million for victims of wage theft in 2012 alone and that's just for the workers who successfully pursued their cases.

People with power—employers, managers and owners of businesses big and small—quite often do mistreat their workers. And they do it because there are no consequences to fear and workers often can't leave a job without putting their livelihood at risk. So they daren't speak out their voice.

So we also need social institutions—a universal basic income, wage allowance, a job guarantee, truly universal health care and more—that give workers an alternative to depend on in the market for income. And we need a strong labor movement that can credibly punish employers if they don't give workers a fair share and press the government to enforce the law.

  1. (1) Why was Vaughan able to escape serious injury?
A . The barrel did not have a cover. B . His colleagues rescued him in time. C . The temperature of the stuff was low. D . He immediately broke the barrel and ran away.
  2. (2) What does the underlined word "iceberg" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A . Employers treat their employees badly. B . Employees may easily get injured while working. C . Competition is much fiercer in fast food industry. D . Employees fail to defend their rights through laws.
  3. (3) What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?
A . The potential consequences of wage theft. B . The reasons for the phenomenon of wage theft. C . The conflict between employers and employees. D . The complaints from employees about wage theft.
  4. (4) What can be inferred from the passage?
A . Employees should work harder to improve income. B . Vaughan was fired owing to his negative attitude to work. C . It's unnecessary for employees to be in conflict with employers. D . Some measures should be taken to protect employees' interests.

Scientists have designed "transparent wood" that could replace conventional glass in windows. The innovation was developed using wood from the balsa tree, which is native to South and Central America, and claims to be five times more thermally efficient than glass.

The transparent wood was created by teams at the University of Maryland and University of Colorado, which set out to find a greener alternative to conventional glass – a production that creates 25,000 tons in emissions each year. Along with contributing to greenhouse gases, glass contributes to a loss of energy.

"Residential building windows in particular account for 10–25% of the heat loss due to their poor thermal management capability," the team wrote in the study.

"Exploring energy efficient window materials is thus highly desirable to address heating costs, energy shortages, and the global impact of climate change associated with increased carbon emissions."

The team notes that the bonding between PVA and cellulose(纤维素)in the wood, creates a tightly packed structure that allows for more thermal protection and makes it more durable and lighter than glass.

The team treated balsa wood in a bath that bleaches(漂白)it of nearly all visibility and then injected it with a chemical substance called polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) - creating a product that is virtually transparent. Unlike traditional glass, the transparent wood can withstand much stronger impacts and will bend or crack when damaged, instead of shattering(粉碎).

"Switching to transparent wood could prove to be cost efficient as well," researchers shared in a statement. "It is made from a sustainable, renewable resource with low carbon emissions. It can be produced with existing industrial processing equipment, making its manufacturing an easy prospect."

  1. (1) What does the underlined word "thermally" in paragraph 1 mean?
A . Associated with cost. B . Connected with heat. C . Associated with emissions D . Connected with structure.
  2. (2) Why is the residential building windows mentioned in paragraph 3?
A . To show the disadvantage of conventional glass. B . To show the efficiency of thermal management. C . To explain the global impact of climate change. D . To explain the importance of building designing.
  3. (3) What helps the transparent wood in thermal protection?
A . Its tightly packed structure. B . Its sustainable, renewable resource. C . Its easy manufacturing prospect. D . Its industrial processing equipment.
  4. (4) What do we know about the "transparent wood"?
A . It will shatter when damaged. B . It has replaced traditional glass. C . It is more durable than glass. D . It contributes to greenhouse gases.

Earth Day, April 22, was founded in 1970 a day of education about environmental issues.

The holiday is now a global celebration is sometimes extended into Earth Week, a full seven days of events focused on green living.

By the early 1960s, Americans were becoming aware of the effects of pollution on the environments. Rachel Carson's 1962 bestseller Silent Spring pointed out the dangerous effects of pesticides(杀虫剂) on American countryside. Later in the decade, a 1969 fire on Cleveland's Guyahoga River threw light on the problem of chemical waste disposal. Until that time, (protect) the planet's natural resources was not part of the  (nation) political plan. Only a small portion of the American population was familiar with environmental issues.

Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1962, Senator (参议员) Gaylord Nelson was determined  (convince) the federal government that the planet was at risk. In the fall of 1969, Nelson,  (consider) one of the leaders of the modern environmental movements, announced the Earth Day concept at a conference in Seattle and (invite) the entire nation to get involved. He later recalled: "Telegrams, letters, and telephone  (inquire) poured in from across the country." The American people  (final) had an opportunity to express their concern about what was happening to the land, rivers, lakes and air.
